My issues with the Demon's Souls Remake
None of which are stemming from the gameplay. They are all artistic/aesthetic. And as noted in the video - I wrote this script back after the game came out, I just didn't see the point in uploading it at the time. But months on and I'm still getting a lot of people asking me about it so, this serves as an answer! On a technical level, the game is very impressive to look at.

He's not talking about game mechanics, he's talking about visuals. lets not be so pretencious as to think that you can't analyze broad visual points of a game when there are trailers and gameplay videos and screenshots. @@SilverMont Because playing a game is how you view the art. Otherwise it's not a complete view. It's like only seeing the mona lisa as a puzzle your only partially assembled. -changing the music to make it more orchestral and generic -updating the environments to the point of eye pollution -changing the “you died” screen prompt -changing the sound design. Yep. These people understood nothing about what made demon souls so charming and gutted any enjoyment I could have. One of the biggest offenders is how they got rid of the “laughter” in the tower knights theme”. One of the most ICONIC parts of the OST gone and then they “bloodbourne” it up. According to Schopenhauer, music is the most exalted form of art. Out of all the forms of art, music depends on matter the least and is as such closest to the soul. I think that music captures the essence of the two games and that the differences between the soundtracks of the original and the remake reveal something about the games themselves. The first and probably the major difference between the two soundtracks pertains to their scope. The original soundtrack is chamber-like whereas the remake's soundtrack is orchestral. The original uses only few instruments at a time, the remake uses a full orchestra. The original induces feelings of loneliness and abandonment unlike the remake which induces feelings of heroism and wonder. The original remains somber, the remake strives for fantastic action. The second difference involves the complexity of the two soundtracks. The original keeps its music modestly simple, the remake on the other hand opts for complex movements. The tracks in the original loop couple of very recognizable tunes, the tracks in the remake all blend together. The third difference relates to the specific sounds. The original uses many odd sounds which give it its own identity like the male vocals in the Tower Knight OST or the organs present throughout the soundtrack. The remake has a very generic set of sounds which are expected in a fantasy setting. Furthermore, it removes the sounds which made the original stand out. Overall, I believe the remake's developers didn't look beneath the obvious surface layer of Demon's Souls. They must have assumed it was a high fantasy action game while in reality it's more of a contemplative experience. Many of the more alien or unique characteristics of the original were trimmed off and what was left simple wouldn't pass the test of time even with the high end graphics. I doubt that Demon's Souls would gain such a cult following and a spiritual sequel in the form of Dark Souls if it had the same direction as the remake. To summarize, the remake fails to keep a coherent identity. Parts of the original which are somber, calm and alien clash with the remake's epicness and spectacle.
@SilverMont

Music is definitely a subject I have very little understanding of. I can critique many other things and explain why I don't like it, or do like it. But with music? I can't explain why one track gives me an emotional response and another doesn't - at least, not eloquently and technically. But it's certainly important. Movies are audio-visual experiences, for example, but it's shocking how many movies seem to largely ignore the audio side of things, which is literally half the experience.

The thing that makes me the most mad is that most people forgot or even didn’t know the original game exists. Besides the veterans who played the original before, the original is mostly forgotten. Most people right now refer to the remake as Demon’s Souls, and not saying remake at the end of the name. For example, if you search up Demon’s Souls on RU-vid, the first things that come up are videos of the remake. I think there are three reasons for that. One being that most Souls players have never played the original, so they dont have any reference for comparison. Secondly, most players are blinded by the gorgeous graphics, completely loosing any sense for the details. And lasty, many players simply dont care about the details. They only notice them on a subconcious level, if ever, and thus dont care about any of the changes. The main reason in my opinion is the fact that noone has played the original. So its easy to just enjoy the gameplay and good graphics. And because nowadays you cant have any form of civiilzed discussion, people who never even played the original will automatically shit on your opinion because you dislike something they enjoy. Its like these people dont even realize that players who the original or both version know much more about the game than the ones who only played the remake and never bothered with the original. Even when someone presents undisputable arguments like the new Fat Official design, new players will just dislike and not listen at all. Its a very frustrating situation because I also think the remake isnt good outside of raw graphical quality. BluePoint completely messed up the unique art of Demons Souls and made the soundtrack into a generic, bombastic, orchestral piece that often times doesnt resemble the originals unique instrumentation and style.

Also regarding music, original has much simpler, subdued, old school music resembling those old school rpg's fitting the subtlety of orginal's asthetics. Fun fact: When Bluepoint first started production on the remake, they originally made an HD *Carbon copy* of Boletaria 1-1, but it was Sony, I believe, in collaboration with the chief of Bluepoint staff, that wanted to remake the visuals for the area to appeal to a more modern audience. "The North English Castle look might of worked 10 years ago, but we decided to go for a more gothic style to fit a modern audience and to push the graphical capabilities of the PS5." No doubt they wanted to appeal to the larger fanbase of Souls Fans, who mainly recognize the visuals of Bloodborne and DS3. Actually according to dev diaries and notes, it can be inferred that there was a great controversy within Bluepoint, one side being massive Demon's Souls fans, wanting to preserve as much of the original art direction as possible- The other side being the modern Western concept artist, with ideas of "Shape design" "tersiary detail" etc who were keen on modernizing it. The Demon's Souls remake was ultimately a compromise. We got the fluted helmet, we got the "Old" Flamelurker, but a lot of new stuff was ultimately slipped in. Remember, the game was initially supposed to be like how they remade Shadow of the Collosus; faithfully. But it was Sony that got Bluepoint concept artists working on the new stuff. Another weird note was any collaboration with FROM Software was almost non-existant. They got the original game codes translated by Sony, but that was IT. You think they'd get dev notes, original unreleased concept art, a bloody conference with Miyazaki or even any of his work buddies, but no. Nothing. They used concept art from the PS3 Special Edition booklet for reference! It would be like if a fan decided to remake Demon's Souls. This should of been a collaboration with Fromsoftware and Bluepoint, ultimately. I don't know who's at fault, if it was Sony's uneasy relationship with Fromsoftware, or Fromsoft's isolationist attitude when it comes to everything. To their fault they are an intensely Japanese company, and what goes in or comes out of their studio is as mysterious as Willy Wonka's Chocolate factory. Altogether I didn't hate the remake as much as I initially did. Bluepoint did preserve a lot of the original silhouettes, and some of the changes they made did feel like keeping in faith with Miyazaki's vision. Some things I really liked about the remake: -The Valley of Defilement. You'd think with the odd gothic grimdark designs they added that they'd turn the Valley into a literal shitfest, but the place does fall under the "Brims with grime, but is oddly pure". It kind of looks beautiful, when you first enter the Swamp of Sorrow's cliff overlooking the valley, you see this ray of sunshine coming from above, and then looking over the expanse of decay, you can make out the bloodstains of other players that glow like little tombstones. Its a nice emotional bit of visual story telling. I also particularly like the first encounter with a depraved in 5-1, where he's kind of alone and silhouetted near a patch of moss and he turns around and you see how twisted and weird he is. This is compacted with how you end up fighting dozens of these guys soon after. - The sound design is undeniable. I am a huge Demon's Souls fan, ok? I got mad when they changed the "clang" noise when blocking in subsequent Souls games. But i fully amerced myself in the ambient sounds, casting magic feels great through sound alone, the tinny reverberations of your voice based on what helmet you're wearing. Its amazing. I'm not sure why they got the "cities overgrown by plant life" wrong, because you can hear distant screams of villagers while progressing through Boletaria, they make it quite clear that the scourge is "Going on" as you progress.

Demon Souls original was a passion project of Mr Miyazaki whereas the remake is more a product to sell as many copies as possible, a cash grab. They stripped out all the subtlety of the original game and replaced it with something that feels like a si-fi arcade game.

Not to be rude, but these points sound like 95% nit-picks based on a very subtle preferences that the majority of people would NEVER notice (looking at you, cotton vs silk comment) mixed in with 5% legitimate issues, like changing the fat official signature design feature. I too haven't played the remake, but from all the playthroughs I've seen, it looks the same, just with higher quality assets and lighting, and a couple design changes here and there. The things brought up in this video are, by and large, incredibly superficial changes, and it's kind of bewildering how you can take so much offence to something like angle of a characters head being approximately 5 degrees different than the original in a 10 second cutscene.

@@SilverMont For one, the dark areas, mainly Latria and the Valley don't feel nearly as oppressive as the original. This is due to an increase in FOV and a toned down darkness, but also contributes another problem that permeates the entire game; and that is that the world just lacks the same grainy, opaque foggy effect that the original had. Considering that Boletaria has been shrouded, quite literally, by fog, I found that effect to be pretty much crucial to sell the game. Then there's also the lack of impact certain music themes have, quite noticeable in the Flamelurker's, the Fool's Idol, but even more so with the Old King Allant; that fantastic organ composition perfectly conveyed the tight iron fist that the King ruled with.

I honestly didn't even think about the UI - but having had a look, I can see what you mean. 100%. I remember thinking the exact same thing when I saw the user interface as the first initial thing when previews of the remake started coming out. I hated it intensely! This reminds me so much of when I used to work in the music industry… I ironically used to work for Sony (Sony Music though). I was a graphic designer/web designer and when our labels (Epic, Capitol Records, etc) would sign cool indie artists that had been around for awhile with an established underground following, I was always _EXTREMELY_ cognizant to keep their artwork looking as indie as it had always looked, to maintain their effortlessly cool, minimalist aesthetic. Bands like Modest Mouse, for example. It would be ridiculous to design the same kind of slick looking, over-the-top bells and whistles website that I designed for the likes of Michael Jackson and Will Smith, for Modest Mouse lol. It just wouldn’t match the soul of the band. It takes being good at what you do and having passion in art to recognize and fight for such things if corporate pushes back, trying to demand something that doesn’t fit the aesthetic of a subject matter. Bluepoint simply isn’t good at what they do. If they were good at what they do, then they would not have changed everything for the worse!

Just wanted to address a couple things lore wise, firstly the timeline. It's a bit unknown exactly when the bulk of DeS is taking place when compared to the colorless fog engulfing the land, but it is fairly obvious that the tutorial and the main game take place in separate locations as well as even separate times. The tutorial likely takes place in an outpost on the outskirts of Boletaria near Stonefang at the beginning of the demon invasion, note it is brighter and more colorful in this area than the rest of the game as well. While the main game takes place mainly at the heart of Boletaria, when demons have already replaced and are posing as high ranking knights as well as the king himself. Along with the city being filled with dregglings and loyal yet mindless soldiers that attack anyone including Ostrava/Ariona, the prince of Boletaria himself. Whom of which had traveled to Boletaria from Latria through the fog (after it had already engulfed everything and after Allant was already replaced by a demon), so the main game likely takes place shortly after the demon invasion (probably around a year after). Secondly is the flamelurker in the remake, in his intro cinematic he actually does break out of the chamber above the door frame. Breaking free from his containment if you will. As for the architecture, I can shed some light on that subject as I'm relatively familiar with it. Given that Boletaria was founded in ancient times, the oldest parts of the nation should resemble the time period it was built in. Judging by King Doran's armor as well as the architecture in some areas itself, Boletaria was founded in it's universes equivalent of ancient greek times. The architecture particularly is quite similar to Mycenaean architecture, as well as Doran's armor (potentially, unsure) being similar to royal or ceremonial mycenaean armor. So as said the oldest parts of the nation should resemble the time period in which it was built, so the further away from the oldest building you get then the newer the architecture becomes. So in the tutorial, the architecture should likely be more medieval like it appears in the remake while the heart of Boletaria should more resemble it's original architecture. Unless of course since it is the heart of a nation, they continue to build on top of the old architecture replacing it with the new. So the heart of Boletaria should either look ancient, or high medieval depending on how progressive or conservative the nation is. Great vid btw

The original tutorial doesn't very look like outpost of Boletaria. It look like ancient forgotten building then a outpost of Boletaria.
@SkullOfTheRaven
@SkullOfTheRaven 3 года назад
@@kang2448 The outpost is literally named outpost as well as having Boletarian soldiers posted all over it, the age of the building doesn't mean anything regarding it's function. The architecture of the outpost in the original does suggest that it's one of the more ancient buildings in Boletaria (which isn't usually how nation development works), but they fixed this in the remake by making it look more new compared to the rest of the game as it should. But yes, the tutorial is in fact a Boletarian outpost near Stonefang (the outskirts of Boletaria) at the beginning of the demon invasion. As for Latria, literally all the Old Monk did was lock away the royal family and help fill Latria with demons. Given that demons were already invading and that he became an ally to them as well as becoming a demon himself, a year is more than enough time for Latria to become as corrupted as it did (especially since magic is a thing). Also keep in mind that he had to have done this after Ostrava left Latria to reach Boletaria, else Ostrava would have been imprisoned as well. And given that it's obvious Ostrava had just gotten to the palace when we find him, it couldn't have been much more than a year since he left Latria unless the dude took massive detours during his trip (or the fog he traveled through has some kind of time altering effect, which it probably could)
@kang2448

Create two Maneater and two prisoner horde ( the giant ball that shoot magic) create a doll mimic look of queen. The Heart operating for so long that it turn bottom level of Latria into a swamp. @SkullOfTheRaven
@SkullOfTheRaven 3 года назад
@@kang2448 Lore wise it's still a Boletarian outpost regardless of what the in-game name of it is, that's kinda been known for awhile before the remake even existed. And I didn't forget at all, once again magic can do wondrous things in a very short amount of time especially if there's an immense amount of it. Demonic magic specifically could definitely turn a group of people into a writhing ball of flesh pretty quickly, and a giant heart beating and gushing 24/7 could 100% turn the bottom level of Latria into a swamp over a single year (depending on how much fluid it produces and how steady the flow is). But again I'm basing the timeline on Ostravas journey from Latria to the palace. He had to have left before the Old Monk did what he did and he had only just arrived at the palace when we encounter him, so either it had only been a year and everything happened in Latria rather quickly (completely possible) or the fog Ostrava travels through has time altering effects making his journey last much longer than it should have (also completely possible). Keep in mind the Old Monk did not do all this on his own, he had demonic help as well

@@SilverMont Here, someone on reddit already made the comparison before me: i.redd.it/zc4v5lj4qu651.png Looks fairly intentional to me. Allant's pauldron on his right arm even has a very similar engraved design and shape. Even Allant's stature and face look like something out of North Star. Miyazaki is not shy from referencing anime and manga he likes, and Fist of the North Star is immensely popular in Japan, so this all makes sense to me. On top of that, Buronson (the creator of Fist of the North Star) worked with Kentaro Miura on a book called "Japan." So there is a connection between North Star and Berserk.

@@kevo300 there’s a very similar situation in the Halo community when it comes to comparing Halo CE with its remaster in terms of graphics and art style. The newer style, while pretty in many areas, absolutely fails to drive in the same atmosphere as the original. The mission where The Flood are introduced is a great example. In the original, it’s dark, foggy, and the textures smooth, so any difference in them, say blood dripping onto the floor from the ceiling, it’s easy noticed and you know it’s out of place. In the remaster, it’s bright, and detailed, and all the subtlety is lost. But no one complains about Halo 2’s remastered graphics. Why? They were faithful to the original artstyle while also enhancing them to modern hardware. Now apply this thought process to Demons Souls, artstyle, music, atmosphere, etc. Just like in Halo CE remaster’s case, there is a lot of good in the new, but it is at the expense of the good of the old game. A remaster should make the good of the old game better instead of covering it up.

I appreciate your bravery being a contrarian and I have my own issues with it, like some in Latria, the fat minister, and your tone points are valid. I also think you shouldn't judge a video game with out having the elements delivered to you how they are intended; with you in control to look around and explore and chose the pace. It's very different than cherry picked footage others upload and promo material. I have never had an idea of a Fromsoft game, match it remotely once it releases and I finally play through it. It deserves to be reviewed in full or it's not a true game review, it's a trailer review. I want to address several points you made I think need some more context or consideration in my own opinion. I am not 'correcting' you as we are both sharing our opinions, I just feel these points are worth considering to develop your opinion more fully. 2:30 the video of Shuhei Yoshida eating those original words and publicly apologize of how wrong he realizes he was now. 4:55 It has been plenty long for plants to grow. This isn't JUST starting, King Alant rewoke the Old One and there has been time for four separate creatures to cultivate enough souls to become arch demons. That does not happen in a few months. Entire kingdoms have fallen. The yellow monk had time to go on a journey, find the yellow robe, usurp his own queen, imprison the surviving population population, decompose, and do you have any clue how long it would take to go to Ikea enough times to get all those chairs!? Probably twice so that's a couple years at least. The reason everyone attacks you is because they haven't been able to sustain their soul requirements for clarity and have gone mad. Also, plants actually start growing back very quickly. Bamboo can grow nearly and inch PER HOUR! 5:30 Many people tried escaping but only Valarfax made it. He was one of the Twin Fangs as you know who were King Alants loyal brave knights. He wouldn't order an Uber the moment some fog rolled in. He would have stayed to defend the kingdom with Biorre. Abandoning his lord and partner would only have happened if he had no choice, perhaps after Biorre was imprisoned, but mostly likely he would try to secure his release in someway first before Silent Hill LARPing out into the death fog. 5:50 The NPCs are human because they are all actively doing something to keep acquiring souls to retain their sanity like vendoring or hunting down and killing demons. 7:17 the Arch Stones were made LONG before Demons Souls Takes place. That is why you don't see Maiden Astria on the 5th Archstone, or the Yellow Monk on Latria, and the digger king is gone and his land is now controlled by Boletaria. They were made during the first scourge and it's been a VERY long time since then. Only 1 monumental is still alive. How old do you imagine something called a monumental lives? Prolly a while if they aren't a bunch of anti-vaxers who caught covid when the Fog covered the land making people unable to see basic reality. Unless this is a translation error and should be the "Fox" coverage, which would make the 'Old One' Roger Ails... hmmm, a massive hollow monster devoid of any soul sleeping below ground with trees growing out of it! Holy crap someone get @VaatiVidya on the phone! I digress; but to address the ornate intricate craftsmanship being out of character for the nexus, dude the way you open the door is an inverted statue of liberty dropping a massive sword through a load bearing Ostrava bench and ripping open a magic dance floor. I feel like they weren't on tight construction budget. Go to Bed Bath and Beyond and see how much 20 candles costs then imagine needing to buy that many for each place you intend for a visitor to stand. 8:00 Fat officials, I agree. Think they focused on the "fat" rather than the fact that they were more ministers of evil imposing the will of a box of milk duds that that rolled into the couch. 13:00 The facial animations in the remake are very wells done, you can't see the nuanced inflections and animations in compressed youtube video. The ps5s graphics need to be see to be believed, nothing online can capture it at all, it's like the first time seeing HD or HDR, it's akin to seeing and entirely new color, the facial dynamics can only really be seen properly in game or details will just be missed. 15:11 The ps5 has 3d audio that only really works with a headset. It does not sound good on my tv speakers, but on my Drop Senheiser PC38X's it does even more to immerse you into the game than the visuals. There are so many things you can't even hear at all without a headset cuz the way they made the audio. It's mixed in a way you can 'see' around you 360 degrees with your ears as if you are watching a second monitor, really hold off on judgement of the sound work until you hear it properly! It's impressive. I do agree on the tone being different but I will mention what I think about that in my wrap up. In closing, they certainly knew their audience and the subject material the lore was based on. The amount of hidden lore accurate details they put in the game beggars belief! They intentionally kept the 4-1 skip FOR the community making a tactical choice not to fix it as it's like Han Solo saying he did the kessle run in under a unit of distance. It's endearing at this point, not a problem. It's loved because it's wrong. If you wanna know how to ruin something watch what Solo: A Star Wars Story does with that. They redesigned the fluted helm and some people didn't like it, so respecting those are veterans they made the original design as a reward for beating the vanguard tutorial boss. You can see the human forms of the demon bosses in photo mode watching their soul dissipate and they rendered content based off the design works which even Fromsoft didn't put in the game. For the whole tonal difference with the music and such like how different latria is. It is a song from the original soundtrack actually and infact is more true to the lore than the original. She sings to comfort and ease the fellow prisoners, they chose music that is intentionally more soothing which makes latria not nearly as creepy but infact more true to the lore. It updates the game while keeping the original still worth playing too! They wanted to remaster the game without making the original obsolete. We gained something without having to lose anything in a way. Do you know hard it is to make something the same, that's also different!? That's why nobody likes remakes. We want our member berries! But you don't eat the member berries cuz they aren't actually as good now. The new differences combined with the fractured world mod that flips the entire game horizontally AND has secret items to find only in pure black and white fractured world tendency to unlock a new secret door and get the penetrator armor peope asked for from the beginning. They give us something far better than a faithful remake, they give us a chance to recapture the feeling of playing demons souls new in a slight way. It's SO appreciated! The 5:4 boss tone is not NEARLY as unsettling without the music that was PERFECT in the original. I like that they didn't got straight for a carbon copy with better graphics. Some things just don't work on better hardware. If they remade silent hill 1 100% faithfully it world be horrendous. The hardware limitations helped set the tone. The fog and bad graphics made your imagination fill in the gaps. The fog would just be obnoxious and the enemy original designs would look boring. What happens when you try to be 100% faithful and only up the graphics and sound quality is you get the Secret of Mana remake. Everyone loses. The purists and the people who want something fresh. Consider you were in charge of remaking Dark Souls 1 on PS5 and know that you can't have it turn out like DSR cuz it wasn't different enough and everyone hated it with passion, but you can't change it too much either or it's be like Dark Souls 2 where everyone hated it cuz it wasn't like DS1 at all. This is probably one of the most terrifying communities to make a game for cuz of our passion. That means it takes guts to do drastic design choices cuz you will get obliterated if you do it wrong. I really hope that the idea of the game you are getting from the uploaded footage doesn't set you mind in stone too much because this game truly is worth looking at with fully open eyes before forming an opinion. There is alot of very detailed appreciation and fandom to be missed if it's not given a full fair chance from the start. I hope you can go in neutral and play the game and then see if you still feel the same way. If you do, I respect you have a different opinion and that is perfectly fine! I just wouldn't want another passionate soulsborne fan to miss out on a single ounce of quality content because of a bias set by not seeing in as the medium it was intended to be viewed as. Deracine for instance, DOES NOT translate through a lets play watch, AT ALL. It exists in how it uses the vr hardware, and this game exists in how the ps5 does visuals and the heavy investment in to audio that can only exist fully with a headset. There's haptic feedback in 3-2 when you are near the beating heart! It's disgusting but SO good! This game is actually a collection of hundreds of subtle details more than a flashy graphic flex, you just need to be able to look clearly to to that tho :)

The same thing applies to the cover too! Have a look at the japanese ps3 cover, and compare to the us cover and then to the remake cover. The japanese cover is the Slayer of Demons(main character) on the ground, like a corpse(in the same position as Oscar in Dark Souls). He is(almost) dead, but you can see he's still holding his sword on his hand, and you see many arrows on his shield, so you also see that although he fell, he put up a good fight before that. And that is the atmosphere of the actual game. You'll be dying all the time but what matters is putting up a good fighting and eventually overcoming challenges. Now, the american cover of the PS3 version, although doesn't covey the same feeling, still doesn't make it seem like the protagonist is the most badass man alive, it's just some random knight with a cool glowing. Now take a look at the PS5 cover... It seem like one of those generic medieval fantasy games. If not for the title and previous knowledge it being a remake of the PS3 version, if you saw its cover at gamestop, would you think it was a original and innovative game who actually created it's own subgenre and is the spiritual predecessor of the Ultimate Game of All Time(Dark Souls won this prize)? I know I wouldn't, I would think it's some generic fantasy game. Just as you said, in the trailer, the original makes the character seem like he's struggling, he's giving his best but it's not enough, while on the remake he just sweeps the ground with enemies. And this is the main problem I have with the remake. The PS3 version was minimalistic, but realist. You weren't the ultimate chosen hero of all time, you were just someone who entered the fog looking for opportunities and power. On the remake they make you seem like a good. The voice acting doesn't have the same emotions. The music doesn't feel as unique and sometimes the atmosphere doesn't even match(see Dirty Colossus' new theme theme and compare to the fight). They even DESTROYED one of the best music of all time in my opinion(Maiden in Black, or Nexus Theme). Sorry for ranting The point is, they took a minimalistic, desolate and lonely tale of a random knight who happened to be lucky and be trapped into the nexus and through perseverance manage to kill its foes into a generic and epic game with epic music and giant castles and orchestras. Some people think that fromsoftware would go with that if they had time and money and hardware, but as you said, the concept art proves it isn't true. Sorry for ranting...

I completely agree. I don’t want to ruin anyone who loved the remake’s parade, but, I agree, it was very disappointed as well. I would say they are trying to be as marketable to a western audience as possible, robbing the nuance of a lot of the stuff and making things more “superficially cooler” than the original which was unapologetic about its weirdness. The new intro was absolute cringe. It felt like its trying to sell you on a gameplay rather than an atmosphere. In the original we have a knight fighting tactfully and cautiously, as he looks around the enemies surrounding him and keeps his guard up. In the remake he just dives balls deep into eight enemies with LITERAL SUPER STRENGTH. Then the phantoms that pop up do power-ranger poses like their your “buddies” whereas the original was more vague and mysterious, is this my friend, is this an enemy? You don’t know. The music has no punch to it at all, and the instrumentation is much more “bland” whereas the original music sounded like music that could actually be produced in the middle ages (with its minimalism) in fact most of the soundtrack sounded like this! The Flamelurker arena is emblematic of how they are trying to make the most marketable game ever sacrificing the original intent. But it extends further than that, as almost everything that is “weird or odd” was changed to be scary or gross or more evil looking. This heightens the cool factor, because if you kill a cool demon or a gross demon, you feel cooler cause you did it. The original vanguard was made into a Warhammer 40K chaos monster, whereas in the original he looked a lot more goofy and silly, which imo added to the mystique and intrigue of the world. And they made sure to give him blood and weird growths on his body! Fat Officials, like you mentioned, were changed to be bloated and gross looking and all semblance of subtlety was removed. Archstones in the original game had a rock-like elephant thing which the sword pokes, but they changed it to a “evil demon skull” because it wasn’t cool enough. The miners of Stonefang looked out of shape and fat and pathetic in the original, and they changed them into “evil looking goblins.” I know they changed the Flamelurker to resemble his original look, but the original remake flamelurker is also a glaring example of how they are changing the “weird aspects” and “fixing” them to be more marketable and generic. Realistic but unimpressive architecture for a fortress? Nuh-uh too weird lets make it look gothic or something! The mind flayers looked a bit too silly in the original nope gotta fix that, lets make them look like mind flayers from your next door DND book. Adjudicator was very “idk what I’m looking at” so lets make him grosser, and give him nipples with nipple rings. and remove the yellow slimy skin and tattoos (too confusing!) too! I am not a fan at all of what they did to the remake. Considering the music… if you want to see a “you missed the point” example with the music, listen to Armor Spider theme of the original and compare it to the remake's, because they barely sound the same at all or have the same energy. The former sounds mad and insane and erratic and erroneous, very panicky and nightmarish, the latter sounds like tension and oooh spookies here and there. Its not innovative at all compared to the original's minimalism and odd use of instruments. The glaring changes proves to me that their intent was not to expand on the original’s style, but rather create a cooler and more marketable version of the game. It was a missed potential. The original was so weird and strange in so many aspects, but that is going to be overshadowed by the new generation as graphics begin to get better. Who in the right mind would get a PS3 to play the original demon souls, no one. But people will remember demons souls for the much more generic remake. That isn’t to say I don’t respect the work they went through.

This is not necessarily a bad game; it's mechanically still Demon's Souls. But it is in many ways, a bad Remake: it deliberately changes the art direction/cinematography/lighting/sound design, etc, and with it, the general atmosphere and overall tone too. All of these components are integral to a souls games, they can't be altered or exchanged with something else. It failed completely to convey the originally intended experience. It may be more technically impressive, but it's lesser in most respects simply because it is not Demon's Souls.
@SilverMont
@SilverMont Год назад
Yeah, it succeeds on a technical level, but fails at evoking the same themes. Not understanding why aspects of the original worked or why they were important just shows how they weren't really right to handle the remake. Whoever was in charge of making those decisions, that is.

The artists at Bluepoint are artists too, and they did an insanely good job with the remake. But as artists, they’ll want to make small adjustments that they think suit the overall picture. Can’t blame them much for that, especially considering the vast majority of the game is done beautifully. I think you’d like it if you played it.

i liked it, but that was all i *liked* it. They ruined the audio. boss fight music, namely 1-4 boss.. they changed the music to medievil elevator cheese. but that isn't even the worst thing.. they removed the haunting sound of rushing wind from stronefang tunnel, all of the ambience is lost, it just felt static and i spent much of my time on demons souls playing with the sound on my soundbar so low all i could really hear was the weapons clanging i didn't really care.

@OdaManjiro Год назад
@@SilverMont Yeah, you have to beat Vanguard to get it; it's not exactly the same but very close. The FromSoft version of the armor was overall better, the style of fluting, neckguard, and other bits were closer to 1500's historically accurate than the new one. Doran's the old king right? Yeah, that was bad. The remake isn't ugly but I questioned the artists' sense of design aesthetics often. They seem to have never asked themselves why something was there or why it looked the way it did.

This is suggested to those that criticize you for talking about a game you have not played, even though there's no need to play it to talk about the points present in your video... As for you Silver, I think that the video talking about the music change (again on that channel) might interest you as to narrow down why the new soundtrack feels wrong...

The remake suffers a lot from being the same game. All of the originals worst points are still there or are worse(the upgrade system and the weight system). Also they took zero of the potential that comes with a remake to actually balance the game or even add more weapons and armor sets. It's frustrating watching the opportunity be wasted.

@soarel325
@soarel325 3 года назад
Yeah you pretty much nailed it. Spot on. Demon’s Soulless’ aesthetics are entirely influenced by the most soulless, design-by-boardroom Hollywood and AAA trends out there. No subtlety, no nuance, no atmosphere to speak of. The creature and character redesigns all look like they belong in a mobile shovelware game, the UI is generic and minimalist, the game is full of those awful gaudy HDR magic and fire effects, the game’s color grading is skewed towards a putrid orange and teal common in the worst 2000s and 2010s Hollywood blockbusters, and the fantastic soundtrack of the original game has been replaced with boring and indistinct orchestral music similar to what you find in, again, the worst Hollywood blockbusters and AAA games. It’s the “this will be graphics in 2013, Nintendo hire this man” design philosophy. There is not a single bit of care put into any of these creative choices, they were made because it’s what the suits say is trendy and popular. Paint by numbers, with the laziest script. Not to mention, they didn’t do a single damn thing to fix any of the original game’s problems! World and character tendency still suck, there are still too few armor sets (+ they’re still gender locked), and half the bosses are still forgettable afterthoughts (even more so seeing as their gorgeous aesthetics and fantastic music have been ruined). Demon’s Soulless has all the faults of the original game with none of its charm. It’s worthless.
