I bought my 1995 Jeep Wrangler YJ Rio Grande back in 2014 and made a lot of progress on it until I started my RU-vid channel at the end of 2016. This video goes over all of the work and adventures I went on in that time.

@JTMOFFROAD its always great to look back to the beginning when all you had was a beat up canvas. Forward to the present day and to look at how much work, time, money placed on the project, just a satisfying feeling. My YJ story shares a lot of similarities. Great story man👍

Great video thanks! My wife and I just bought our first jeep ... 95 Wrangler YJ 2.5L soft top, we love it ! We added 33×12.5 tires on 15×10 rims added a 4" rough country lift, Red Rock rock crawler guards on driver and passenger side with a Barricade HD front bumper those mods really changed the looks but one thing I really like is the Bed Rug liner we put inside front and rear, beats the heck out of carpet . Love your videos keep up the good work!!

What a cool journey and great learning experience. I'm in central ohio, and took my old JKU to Southington a bunch of times. I sold it last year, and I'm now building a 99 TJ, hoping to have it ready for SOR next spring. It's a big project, so I'm learning a lot along the way too. Keep up the cool videos.

It’s so funny hearing jku’s being referred to as old but I guess they really are now!! I bet that TJ is going to be a lot of fun. Good luck with the build!

Nice job on the video! I've been working on my YJ for 9 years now and love it just as much as when I got it bone stock. Kinda cool as my other vehicle is an 04 Avalanche.

My second Avalanche and second YJ, YJ's are so simple as you mentioned and where I learned what mechanic skills I have. The Avalanche is just so comfortable, reliable and versatile. I purchased a nice 2001 7.3. F250 super duty to tow with when I sold the 1st Avy,towing was great but missed everything else about the Avy so traded for this super clean 04.
@jtmoffroad
@jtmoffroad 3 года назад
YJ Andy that’s hard to believe you traded that for another avalanche! I’m with ya on that though. If I ever have to get another truck, it’s going to be hard to get anything other than another avalanche. The 8’ bed capability in a short bed configuration is just something I can’t get away from for many reasons

Good start, do yourself a favor. When your yj grows, you Will break things. Never replace the broke stuff with the same stuff you just broke. UPGRADE. may take time but worth it in the long run. See if you can find a set of tj Rubicon axles, try repo yards, give you better strength as tires get bigger. I have had my 93 since 2002, great platform, you are doing things the right way. Lots of good times ahead. Try " wes drives over a car," on RU-vid. That's me. Greaseable bolts for shackles will help spring movement.
@jtmoffroad
@jtmoffroad 3 года назад
Thanks for the advice! This video was just up to before I started youtube. Since then I’ve been building it more, I probably should have elaborated on that a little more in the video. Once I broke my Dana 35, I put a locked 8.8 and so on. Definitely don’t want to stay in the same place at all.

@@jtmoffroad I've had mine over 18 years, lots of upgrades. We all learn as we go, some of the best things come from doing just what you are doing. Finding others with similar vehicles and swapping ideas. One fairly simple upgrade I can offer is to MSD your ignition. 6al box, blaster 2 coil and 8.5 mm spark plug wires. Burns clean, helps fuel mileage. You live back east? Be sure to get underneath and wash off top of skid plate. Hidden mud turns into hidden rust, this you probably figured out by now. Just keep up the videos, always good to watch a YJ grow.

@@jtmoffroad and yes ,the 8.8 is a really good choice . 97 and newer has disc brakes, quite often a lot of aftermarket support. Had one in mine until I went up to 37's. Now running Dynatrac prorock 60's with ARB's . They just keep growing.

had the same problem with a 92 Yj I bought, when they put the springs on ,they must have tightened them when the Jeep was still on lift, it beat me to death, the guy that regeared it, said when he loosened the springs the Jeep dropped about 1-1_/2 inch, once he put everything to spec it rode way better, and 3.07 gears to 4.11s was a big difference,iam in a 2001 Tj now, still wanted a smoother ride, your Jeep is very nice
@jtmoffroad
@jtmoffroad 3 года назад
Glad to hear I wasn’t the only one! Mine dropped a good amount once loosened as well. I bet that jump in gear ratio was a great change! That’s cool you eventually got a TJ. I’d like to get a TJ or LJ someday. Thanks for the compliment!
@steveblankenship2413
@steveblankenship2413 3 года назад
@@jtmoffroad yes then I regeared Tj from 3.07 to 3.73, it's a 3 speed auto without OD ,so the 3.73 is just right, can do over 80 on Interstate and take any mountain road I want with ease
@jtmoffroad
@jtmoffroad 3 года назад
That sounds great. I’d love to eventually have a jeep that’s got enough to handle offroad as well as being comfortable on road that can keep up with traffic

I have a 1990 yj 4.2L which I got about 8 years ago. I find myself in a very similar situation you were in, I love the idea of a jeep but I have very little money or knowledge to do the things which really need to be done. I've had loads of issues with it tbh not the least was needing a totally rebuilt engine about 5 years back. It seems every year I need to put about a grand into it to keep it running well. All of this has left me considering selling it and getting something different but the question is what is there that could replace it. To be able to use it the way I want to would mean lifting it for bigger tires and switching out the axles and gear ratios, adding lockers, swaybar disconnects and a new soft top among other things and I'm not certain it's worth putting that much time and money into it when it's never been very reliable anyway. I would be very curious to hear your opinion.
@jtmoffroad
@jtmoffroad 2 года назад
Well I sold my Jeep a few months ago and let me tell you, I regret it pretty bad. Overall I miss having a jeep. If you don’t mind letting it sit while you save the money for what you want, that would work. Otherwise you can sell it and maybe get one more in the shape that you want later on down the road with all the things you want already done to it. Typically modified vehicles are going to be cheaper than starting fresh and buying all the parts at cost, but then you can also inherit other problems. Having a Jeep isn’t easy but life is definitely better with one!

Hi - I’m at the first quarter of your story at the memoent. Got a 91 4.0 an I’m loving it. It has a 2’’ lift and I think about to go on 33 12.50 15 as you did. Dose it needs regearing or i siti still ok and powerful to ride ?

Can't wait to fix up my YJ wangler. You still running the stocked gas tank or did you get it replaced? And say you won the lotto or a good amount of money would you take it to a shop and get more modifications done to it or keep as is. Also what engine you got in the jeep?

I`m going to swap frames on my YJ , I`ve been checking salvage yards south, I`m in Ohio . With new frames costing as much as they do, you would think someone would write a how to manual or helpful hints kind of thing. There are several videos that show show a bunch of guys doing a frame swat in a 3 min. video , I`m 73, I don`t do anything in 3 min. anymore. Any suggestions ? I worked as a pipe welder for many years, I can`t help but wonder if patching a frame is really the right way to go, I`ve welded old metal, sometimes its a job finding good metal to weld to.

From what I’ve researched, it’s a mopar light bar that’s not made anymore. You may have some luck on eBay or Craigslist. If you look up Jurassic park yj lightbar you might find more info. I got it cheap off a buddy’s relative. Good luck!
