My Keltec CP33 blew up while filming my review... not a good day. I really wish the CP33 had not had so many problems. Unfortunately, this failure was pretty catastrophic. It really was a lot of fun using it as a cheek pistol.... WHEN it worked properly.

No one else finds it odd that the camera overheated at the exact moment of failure? But yet you were able to get footage back so fast after failure that the mag had smoke coming from it? Something doesn’t add up here. How did the camera cool down that fast?

Well to be honest when I bought my cp33 and I was buying ammo for the gun I was told that certain ammo will make the gun overheat or like what just may have happened blow up I was told not all .22 LR bullets will run in that gun and I mean it will but will overheat fast and more complications My opinion you maybe using the wrong ammo because mines have never done this failure to feed but I found out I bought the gun basically broken the piece that popped off was broken and that piece in the back to load a new bullet in the chamber was broken also so that is very odd others are having good times with the gun and like yourself some are having a hard time

My CP33 has been trouble free so far and I have shot almost 1000 rounds but I have used only CCI Mini Mags Copper Clad 40 Grain bullets and nothing more! The only slight problem I have had is with the first round hanging up at the breach and I sometimes had to insert the round in the chamber by hand but after several range visits this is no longer a problem! I shoot all my Guns with the factory sights and the only after market part I installed is a vertical grip on the forearm which I really like and this gives me a much more stable hold! At my age (78) I have had to make some adjustments in my handguns and I now only shoot .22 or .22 magnum and no longer shoot my 9mm! I find this Gun to be very reliable and accurate! I have had much success with this gun and my Two P17's which have been trouble free! In my research, I have discovered that the CP33 has to be cleaned more often than some other .22LR Guns and the Magazines need to be taken apart and cleaned frequently because there is No Feed Ramp and those magazines have a feed ramp designed at the top of each and must be kept clean for function and reliability! Sorry you had so many problems with your gun but mine has proven to be a good investment and much fun to shoot!

Unless you did your paperwork with the ATF I would take the vertical foregrip of that thing brother. That turns it into a SBR and 10yrs in federal prison.

Mine has been extremely reliable. I’ve never had any of the issues I just watched on here. I use high grain rounds as suggested by the manufacturer. I don’t run a suppressor but I do use a muzzle brake. I also clean the magazines after every trip out. It’s a great gun and it’s crazier to see what’s happening with yours.

That's a ruptured case. I had the same thing happen to me while shooting my Kel-Tech P17. Remington ammo was the cause. Remington replaced the ammo and sent me a complimentary box of 9mm. Pretty small bribe considering I could have lost my eye and had to dig brass out of my face. It blew the mag out of the gun, and blew the safety off the left side of the gun. Kel-Tech fixed the gun very quickly and had it back to me. I had only fired 15 rounds from a box of 525 rounds when the rupture occurred. I wasn't about to see if there were any more "bad" rounds in that box. I have not had any more failures with the pistol since the accident. It works flawlessly. I really like it. If you had that thing "cheeked" when the case ruptured you are extremely blessed that you didn't get brass in your eyes. I wasn't wearing eye pro the day mine ruptured. The small piece of brass that hit me was about an inch and half from my eye and embedded in my cheek to the point I had to get a hold of it with a tweezers and really pull hard to get it out and that was with the gun at arms length. I can't imagine what it would have done if I had the thing right nest to my face. From what I gather the ammo crunch has caused QC to drop and that's the reason we are seeing more of this kind of thing.
@ArchetypeofMan
@ArchetypeofMan 2 года назад
Yikes bro! Yeah, eye pro is a MUST!! I've heard ammo QC is definitely suffering. I reload most of my other ammo myself, but the .22LR stuff has been hit or miss

From what I've read they can be very sensitive to any sort of pressure regulation on the barrel like suppressors etc. They also cycle better wet from what I've seen. Glad you're ok, I probably would have stopped shooting it way before that given the multiple issues you had..

I've haven't really had any reliability issues with my CP33, however I have had a few out of battery detonations with mine, probably a total of 6 out of ~1600 rounds or so. I don't remember what brands it happened with, but it has happened with several different brands, the most recent being Winchester Super-X Power-Point. As far as the circumstances of the OBD's, I think what is happening is 2 things: if I shoot really fast it seems like you can get the timing just right and pull the trigger before the bolt is fully in battery. If you close the bolt really slowly on an empty chamber while pulling the trigger you can get the hammer to drop with a small gap between the bolt face and the breech, which would explain the OBD's. The other thing that may be happening is a dirty chamber. I have a .22 Revolver and if I don't clean the chambers they get a ring of carbon that makes inserting the rounds very difficult. If that is happening on the CP-33, that could prevent the bolt from closing fully and allow an OBD.

At 6:03 you mention a stovepipe and how failure to feed has been on going. I don't see nor have I heard you mention that Kel-Tec has a speed loader that is suppose to align the bullets perfectly to avoid such issues as failure to feed. Seems like that would have been your first course of action. I have seen one in operation and they do seem to make the job of loading this monster mag go very smoothly. It seems it would be smart of Kel-Tec to add one to their "in the box" it would make it so that it doesn't get the bad reputation you complain about. It would probably add to the cost but would be well worth it. Your video is the first negative review I have seen and will have a bearing on whether I buy one. Cheers

just had one of those on my first day of owning mine yesterday, nothing seems to have broken on mine, but there was a big cloud of smoke, and what looked like a failure to eject caught in the bolt, with the back blown out, and the casing squeezed, interestingly, a struck dud was also in the chamber when I pulled the bolt back the rest of the way, not sure how that happend. glad mine didnt lose any parts, but it was pretty alarming when it sounded off like that, and peppered my face in fouling. ammo was winchester and the casing was struck like a normal round, it appears

my CP33 shoots great. I love it. I will say i keep the filthy ammo out of it. i primarily use the bulk blue box ammo. also, if you're using the convenient speed loader for it, you can dent the crap out of the cases while using it if you're not careful, which i refuse to shoot a dented round.

Had this happen to mine. When I got it it wouldn't feed, would cycle a few rounds and jam, then pow, stung my fingers. Saw the case and knew right away, it happened again the next mag. Sent it to Kel Tec, got it back in two weeks. Tried with two ammo types today. 50 of cci normal and probably 30 of the thunderbolts I was using. No failures to feed but did have two trigger reset fails cause my gloves are big but fuck shooting this without them, and I had one thunderbolt not have enough powder to eject shell... Much better experience but I'm jaded by it still.

I had that happen to my cp33 also. It was an out of battery detonation. Cracked my $50 magazine at the lips and sent part of the slide stop flying who knows where. I took it apart then and there at the range and inspected it for damage. Seeing no other damage i put it back together and finished off my other 10 mags. No problems so far. My thoughts being that if you shoot long enough any firearm you will eventually encounter a problem like this. The one im most afraid of is the squib load. Cause i dont know if i will be able to discern the difference between shots.

Last week I had the exact same cartridge rupture in my CP33. The slide-release also popped off (it snaps right back on), it was a bit of a surprise, it happened with CCI's Standard Velocity 1070fps 40g Lead Round Nose ammo. The case did also eject just as yours did, that's the first time it's happened to me & I've shot ~1,200rnds through my CP33 (it was cleaned prior to that range visit). I dunno how it happened, it didn't damage me or the pistol, but it was unexpected. ...Other than that fluke, I went out again at the end of the week & shot 150rnds of Federal's 45g Copper Plated Round Nose ammo, & didn't have a single issue (except it doesn't like to feed the 1st round out of my 50rnd magazines). EDIT: Mine is also suppressed.

Wow Bro, glad you walked away relatively unscathed. That could've gone Far South! I've never personally owned an of Keltec's products, so I'm in no position to pass any form of judgment about them. As far as .22 pistols, I've only personally owned a Ruger Mark III, and a Heritage Roughrider. Both have been very reliable, and accurate for what they are. I've probably shot nearly every manufacturer of .22 lr ammunition, and the Ruger ate it all, and of course the Roughrider doesn't care! 😆👍🏻 Well damn, it sucks you gotta ditch it, but there's no need in keeping it if you don't Trust it.

Just as a wild guess, my thought would be either the ammo is too hot or the spring pushing the bolt into battery is too hard. Kinda at odds with each other, but my thought is its snapping the bolt closed too quickly, thus the stovepipes and out of full battery discharges. Too hot a round would throw the bolt harder, too heavy a spring would snap it closed too fast? Is the agulla stuff hotter than cci stingers?
@ArchetypeofMan

Not a bad observation. If and when I get it back from Keltec, I'm either going to trade/ sell, or stick with CCI if the reliability issue is fixed

You definitely had a out of battery ignition most likely caused by the suppressor. Most of the issues you experienced are mag related. I did notice your mags are dirty. This is a major issue with the cp33. The mag is part of feed ramp if dirty it can be a issue. The cp33 has its issues but they can be overcome. The gun doesn’t like dirt . 22lr is just a dirty round . I had the PMR30 do the same thing out if battery ignition. Lets just say I feel your pain only in 22 magnum in my face . The CP33 is a fun gun it just isn’t a victory or ruger mark series . Give it another shot no pun intended. Keep it spotless, load the mags at home if you can , triple check the rim pattern in the mag , oil the hell out of the friction points, you will see them after you break the gun in . One other thing my CP33 likes 1200 FPS ammo . These comments are all my experiences with the CP33. Then again you just may have a lemon gun it happens with kel tec Good luck 👍🏻

@silverback3926
@silverback3926 2 года назад
That was an out of battery ignition. Other 22s i have had that happen. Looks like your issues were ammo and mag related. Kel tec manual says 49 grain round nose . Federal automatch and thunderbolt have run perfectly. The other issue may be the mag release button. Mcarbo makes an upgrade for the pmr30 and cp33. It keeps up and down slop to a minimum. Many variations of good ammo dont work well. Rounds need to be 40 grain round nose.

Why did they say that they Polished "The Feed Ramp", when there is No Feed Ramp on this Gun? User Guide specifically states the there is no Feed Ramp in this Gun Design and the Magazine acts as the feed ramp! This is a design feature of this Gun that makes it different from other guns but you should keep these magazines extra clean because of this feature! Sorry for all your problems but my Gun has proved to be Flawless with now over 1000 rounds and I have been shooting Aguila 40 Grain Copper Clad ammo with only a few problems but no real major issues!

I've always loved Kel-Tec's Ideas and concepts, however their engineering has always been substandard. I had a P32 blow up on me at the range on the first day with factory ammo, and a Sub-200 rifle disintigrate to a usless piece of hardware in under 500 rounds. I don't buy their products anymore. I truly wish a gun manufacturer would copy their concepts and put them out to the public...

One issue is with a direct blowback and using a supressor. Well, they get dirty really fast. Next is the magazine needs special loading. Once you put in a round in the magazine, you need to make sure it is completely seated into the magazine or it won't feed reliably. Next, dont use the manual feed mechanism to help you load it. The cartridges need to be slightly elevated in the front. You must use high velocity rimfire as well. That's why I won't buy one, I dont want a finicky firearm. By the way, I'm not bying into the idea that your camera overheated. Thats just garbage. Just showwhat really happend.

Run a test of that Aguila in a known good bolt gun if you have one. A good bolt .22 is about the strongest action/cartridge pressure ratio you will find, and would be the safest way to test that ammo.
