Forget you average "top 10" video, I decided to take on the challenge of choosing my LEAST favorite Zeppelin tunes from their fantastic discography. Join me as i dive deep into a list of songs that i ALWAYS struggle with plus the reasons why these numbers are on the bottom of my list. But one thing's for sure, THEY ARE the greatest band of the 70s, PERIOD. #johnpauljones #ledzeppelin #jimmypage #johnbonham #robertplant

For me, Four Sticks is such an integral piece of IV. It embodies the mystery of the Zep sound. Just otherworldly and spooky on all fronts. Especially Roberts vocals.

Love this guy's videos (still love them, even after this) but NOTHING on IV should appear on a "worst LZ" list. Even if IV isn't your favorite (maybe you're just sick of hearing all the songs on the radio) it is still, obviously, their most perfect album. Which explains why you've heard every song on the radio.

Right? “..when the owls cry in the night.” IMO, That shrill warble he sings that part with suits the lyric, mood and music perfectly. I’d go as far to say it enhances it. Edit: I believe him but I also believe he knew he made a video that was a smart bomb aimed directly at snooty, precious zep fans. Target: Destroyed

I've always loved Night flight! The amazing vocals at the end finish off nicely a perfect song. Also the line about jumping a train that never stops all adds to the interestingness of it all. My least favourite song would I think have to be Hot Dog. It just seems too daft.

I think the song was about a female that Robert got hooked up with named Audrey or Aubrey. She was from Texas. There’s a pic of her sitting on Roberts lap and shes wearing Jimmys stormtrooper hat (1977). She ended up actually dissing Robert for some other much lesser famous “Rock Star” and it actually annoyed Robert enough to write Hot Dog. I read the story one time years ago and I may not be 100% spot on, but that’s the best I can remember it.

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Yes. The Egyptian orchestra and the Gnawa musicians were perfect. Great playing, usage/placement. And Najma Akhtar’s singing on Battle was (ahem. This parenthetical moment is brought to you by Father Time and the 7 minutes used by the…author(😂) for “thoughtfully parsing ideas of vast nuance, ubiquitous importance, and scarce comprehension” 🙄) arguably better than Sandy Denny’s. A bold statement maybe, but, if Najma wasn’t following in Sandy’s footsteps I’d need not a seconds thought on the matter. Tangentially, though, why is it that I had to use my hand computer to properly praise Najma Akhtar (and I wouldn’t bet $100 that I just spelled her name correctly) while you knew Hossam Ramsay (again with the spelling) by his name and not as the middle eastern guy leading the cool “ethnic” band? (Not strictly factual but truthful nonetheless…😉) It does really bug me, though, that while I like to condescend to and distance myself from the Americans whom I judge to be ignorant, self-centered, narrow minded, xenophobic racists, someone like you (having a proper, objective perspective) can probably only marginally discern me from those whom I lkeep my nose up in the air and far away from. I’m being abit facetious. Maybe less so than I want to believe. Seriously, though, a question or two. Answer honestly;ruthlessly: Unsuredness and self-doubt is unattractive, no?. But is it less or more attractive than someone who may be willfully ignorant, doubtlessly confident and righteously wrong but is at least happy and unshakably self-assured? Is it better to have one position/point-of-view/world view that you resolutely, tenaciously and persistently stick with and never stray from or is it better to dabble and second guess, be ever-receptive, dispassionately objective, neutral, calm, patient, happier, not drinking too much, fitter, healthier and more productive like a Pig. On antibiotics. Listening to DARLENE. 😉😂

‘Candy Store Rock’ and ‘Hots On For Nowhere’ are two songs I adore. When you’re married to the hottest chic, you no longer have to go searching for love... 🛋🍬💗 For me, *Presence* is both ancient and futuristic-sounding simultaneously - timeless. Like Fleetwood Mac’s *Rumours* being mixed brightly as a creative decision, *Houses of the Holy* was deliberately produced, mixed - and combined with the treble turned up in the final mix - to highlight and put a spotlight on Jimmy Page’s brilliant and intricate arrangements - in tandem with his stellar guitar playing. 🔦🎶🔊 ‘The Song Remains The Same’ is a perfect example of what I’m saying. And yes, it became a monster tour de force when performed live! And especially, as the show opener from 1977 to 1979. My favourite way to describe *Houses of the Holy* is like those days in mid to late spring when it’s raining, yet the sun is still shining... 🎸☔☀

This made me think through my list , off the top of my head Boogie with Stu, Hot Dog, Darlene, Dy'er Mak'er, Ozone Baby, Sugar Mama, think a couple more, but as you also pointed out, I can always appreciate the drumming even if I'm not a fan of the song (obviously lol) I appreciate your thoughts on Four Sticks live, but it was so rare that I enjoy the bootleg just as much. Actually, I wish there was like a 5 minute version just of the drums he did on the FS outtake while he's muttering about Ginger Baker, someone (probably Robert) adds that cool vocal too. Coda has long been an album I’ve rarely listened to. Mothership is something I think I have on a HDD, but I know I never purchased it. Before you mentioned Sugar Mama I didn’t realize it’s been easily 25yrs since I last heard it. That track name meant nothing to me. Had to search a bit to find out why. 4 missing tracks. Now I guess I have to revisit the remasters to see if I have them and never noticed. But I don’t think I will find them. Aside from a couple semi recently purchased remasters, I haven’t bought a Zeppelin album in decades. My initial thought on least liked songs would’ve probably included something from Coda, since it’s always been a ‘not really real’ album in my mind. What little I just heard of Sugar Mama, quickly reminded me I did hear it before. It sounds like a throwaway. Living Loving Maid was one I first enjoyed as a middleshooler, these days decades later I skip it most times LZ2 on the car play rotation. While Heartbreaker get repeat plays as it always did. MMH. I’ve heard other band covers of this one, which I don’t like. Candy Store Rock. It’s grown on me, I thought it was expected to be a possible radio cut. Hearing recently the rendition of For Your Life, breathed a new life into that for me. Presence very often captures my heart as being my favorite of them all, but as quickly is again replaced by PG or 3, or HOTH, as soon as I change my driving music rotation a few days later. In truth any of the albums becomes my favorite album practically every time I revisit it. Even ITTOD. Blasphemy many will say. But it’s true, if ITTOD was longer, I’d possibly be spinning it more often. All in all, I maintain Coda is the only one I remotely know I can do without. Though I am thinking I’ll now need to put it onto my phone to take for a test drive soon. ❤

I’d have to disagree with Four Sticks and Candy Store Rock. I think both fit in very well on their respective albums and both bring plenty to the table. Four Sticks has a propulsive blending of hypnotic tranced out stoner vibes with some mystic foreign flavor peppered in. Candy Store Rock has a nice blending of pumped up grooving rockabilly through the prism of the Presence album’s attack of layered guitars and funky rhythm section. All the other picks I’m fine with. And agree with most. I’d like to see you do a list of what you think are the most underrated Led Zeppelin songs. A couple that come to mind for me would be Walter’s Walk and For Your Life.

Nice Jose. Great to see a "bad" list of Zepp by one of their biggest fans. I don't disagree with them either and could add to it, but those would come from ITTOD, so I wouldn't dare ;) Overall, not bad considering the number of songs Zepp wrote. Compare that to the 3 x more album fillers by the Stones and they end up with a similar number of beloved songs ..... not a bad hit/miss ratio really.

Hi JCM! I was interested in your opinions here. Night Flight, the vocals are kind of wild but I've always enjoyed it personally. It's got a bit of a chuggy Stones style boogie to it. Agree with a few others on here, there's a fair bit of In Through The Out Door you could have put on it. And I'm sorry to even have to say this, because of the sentiment of the track, but Robert's vocals are really all over the place on All My Love too. Sorry! Kills me to have to pick one though. The Crunge? They're too heavy to attempt funk. D'Yer Maker is saved by the 'sad sad sad' section, which salvages the song. After your vids about Out Door I thought with my 36 year old ears I'd go back to it after hammering everything by the band upto Presence since I was 13 years old. And...my opinion remains the same, Out Door isn't classic Zep. It's not brilliant. Sorry! Aside from that, love your videos mate as always.

You’re gonna break my heart with this episode,Jose! 🤣🤣 I love and appreciate every Zeppelin song (that’s no exaggeration)except for “Hat’s Off” ….I’ve never liked the effect they use on Roberts voice for that one… and like most, I feel they should have replaced it with “Hey Hey WCID”…..an incredible song that would have fit so perfectly on Zeppelin 3. But songs that some fans don’t like, like …Four Sticks/The Crunge/Boogie With Stu/Candy Store Rock/Hot Dog/ Ozone Baby…. are awesome tunes that I’ve always liked since I first heard them in the summer of 1980 …and 82 for Coda (which I ran out and purchased the day it was released). I know you’re not a big fan of “Night Flight” but I’ve always loved it…. “I once saw a picture of a lady with a baby, southern lady, had a very, very special smile” how can’t you love that lyric. ?!?? lol !! Great job on your last episode! Birmingham 77 has always been a fav of mine ever since I first saw that 8mm footage that I received on a bootleg video I purchased from Japan back in the mid 90’s. I like that you explained your opinions, and presented them as your own opinions. Funny about Misty Mountain- I think the live guitar work is raw and perfect, as is the live I Can't Quit You Babe. Generally I feel the live versions of almost any song are better ("Frampton Comes Alive" is far better than the studio song versions, for example, and IMO), yet the studio versions for Led Zeppelin have that finesse, that layering Jimmy strove for. But Misty Mountain Hop from the outtake of Song Remains The Same rocks. That is the guitar part, tone and amp sound I strive for, volume at 11. Night Flight- love that song, but yeah I agree- as instrumentalists you can try it again, but how do you tell the vocalist his instrument should have another take or two, when he thinks it's fine?? Nothing against Robert, but band dynamics....

Jose' --- it's me, Kenny. I agree with your song choices for your least favorite Zeppelin songs. I am not saying they are also my least favorite just to agree with you, because I really haven't ever really considered what are my least favorite songs when every song on the albums 1 - ITTOD are in my opinion good songs with some amazing and some that are just tolerable. Nothing bad, though. Until you pointed out a few things, specific things about certain songs, which all happen to be weak vocally and I realize now that Robert trying too hard to create something that he shouldn't be just to hear himself or to feel he's adding something or contributing rather than taking a short break and letting the music be the focal point. Could it also be the misdirection of the engineer and or producer for having Robert add unnecessary and unflattering vocals or is it their fault for leaving those vocal tracks in the final mix thinking they sound good? I guess we'll never know. I have to say that you have opened a door that I didn't ever do more than look through the keyhole of that door before, that is now going to lead me into a place where I'm going to look harder at the songs that I rate as my least favorite Zeppelin songs and find out exactly what about those songs that make them just good songs or songs that I tolerate in the context of being part of the album it is on. As you said, the song as part of listening to the whole album you use that time to walk away, get a drink, use the toilet, I took some liberties with those, hahaha knowing you didn't say those things. Well, thanks for this video. The subject is going to occupy a section in my brain rent free and be slightly bothersome for a while now. Hey Kenny, It seems most people here don't like Hot Dog, it's amazing to find out. I own 56 copies of ITTOD hehe. Their brilliance is the sum of ALL parts. This video certainly wanted to open that door at revaluating our perspectives. Working deep dives on the albums has shed light on many things and i can see why Robert felt a unique type of pressure. Glad we're still friends man, no hard feelings hahahah. 'Four Sticks' I can do without, 'Dancing Days' I can definitely do without which got a lot of radio airplay and I never quite understood the mass appeal of that song, it just never worked for me. Couldn't stand the song 'Sugar Mama.' I do like the music and melody enough in 'Night Flight' even though Plant was borderline intolerable. He definitely overdid it on some tracks and thrashed his voice early on which probably accounts for the vocal chord surgery to remove nodules around 73/74 and the big vocal change in Presence. Basically every band has a few duds even Zeppelin but they're still my All-time favorite band. Not just because of the music but also the influence and mystique the band has even 50 years later.

Great way of describing the songs. Led Zeppelin's mystique i agree, is, in a league of its own. Trust me it was hard coming up with this list, but i just wanted to try out this experiment :) Glad to know you don't understand the mass appeal for Dancing Days. It bothers me it was a single.....i can picture all the Non Zepp Fans thinking....Oh so this is Led Zeppelin? UGHH Thanks for watching!

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories --Zeppelin has so many huge iconic songs that they overshadow the 3 or 4 duds. Virtually every rock and glam metal band that followed was influenced by them. From Black Sabbath to Boston to Motley Crue none of them wouldn't have existed. Although The Who might argue with that assertion. Even other genres were influenced. Decades later Zeppelin still casts a gigantic shadow. IMO they're like the Beethoven or Bach or Mozart of rock music and 100 years from now Zeppelin will still be played. It's already been 50 years. Good channel you have and I enjoy watching.

The only Led Zeppelin song I listen to in Mono sound is Hats off to (Roy) Harper because I think that must have been the best final mix and the guitar is a great slide blues, goes to the limit, very original and overdriven. In short "There is no bad Led Zeppelin song" as the popular slogan goes.

Night Flight. I don't dislike it, but it makes me wish it was shorter so I could get to the Killer song after it. I kind of agree with your list but like Darlene and Dancing Days. I never got into 4 sticks. I would drop one of these and put on Hats off to Roy Harper. I would swap I can't Quit you Baby with Your time is Gonna come. Thanks for not dumping on Jer Maker and The Crunge. I've been listening to this band since they were active, and I must say that your series is second to nothing else on Led Zeppelin that I have ever experienced. And your knowledge of musical theory far surpasses mine, so "Hats off to JCM".

Night Flight comes down to those bits i shared, the opening chords which are the basis for The Song Remains The Same a year later i LIKE. But damn Robert just went full "outtake mode". Funny how Hats Off to Roy Harper and Hot Dog seem to be the two most hated songs in the comment section. I love Hats Off because of the acoustic feel it has closing the album. I could never diss D'yer Ma'ker cause Bonham sounds glorious on that one, funny he hated that tune, maybe that's why his fills feel so menacing hahaha. Thanks for you kind words man. Darlene is a cool song. It's really grown on me. Coda didn't get play over here for years. The version is maybe not the best, but the song is cool, imo. I agree on Candystore Rock, but not with much else. I'll have to go see what the first 3 songs were. The sound aspects and arrangements that annoy you don't bug me. I've been a performing musician and have recorded original music, but I don't always listen critically. I can go back to just liking the music, fortunately.

I’m a bit off topic here so please bear with me: It’s my belief that I Can’t Quit You Baby from Coda is the actual concert take and NOT the said “sound check” it’s claimed to be. They simply cut out the intro bit coming off the heels of We’re Gonna Groove and entered it from Robert’s main vocal line entrance. We ALL KNOW that this band never ever played anything the same way twice - so, listen to every drum fill, vocal line and guitar lick side to side from both versions. They’re identical. We see Bobby clutching two mics in the video so we know they recorded the gig. For the 1982 release of Coda, it seems to me they just clipped this tune from the RAH concert and popped it on the album. This is no sound check guys…but the actual concert take. PS: my least fave would have to be Hats Off. I mean…really guys?

Funny you mention For Your Life, i used to not like it, until the 2007 reunion happened and i was like "OH MAN i UNDERSTAND it now, cause Jimmy is not playing the whammy bar on the chords but a Les Paul, it ROCKS SO MUCH". I think For Your Life has bass and guitar slightly out of tune if you listen closely, this is why it sounds WEIRD. I feel the studio version DOESN'T capture it's live potential. Played this track with a tribute band and man...Presence just doesn't do justice to the song! The Crunge yeah, it was....a weird one haha. Thanks for watching!

I didn't get into LZ until I saw them touring the 4th album in Honolulu. So my least favorite song was Whole Lotta Love. Mostly because they played it about 5 time a day every day on the radio. They did it again with Stairway in the 90s, but by then I had other Albums and CDs I could listen to and radio was not as important.

OMGJCM (< lol) Coda songs? Those are rejects already. Jk. I acquired Sugar Mama in '92. When I'd be selling on 5th Ave, we'd pass the time by when it got too quiet, one of us would spontaneously yell out "Say you love me sugar mama and I'll never let you gooooo!" and we'd crack up laughing. Upon Coda release in Fall of '82, I do remember the radio stations hyping Darlene as the big single. You're right about Dancing Days production., Prolly why Stone Temple Pilots version is smoother. Right JCMSTP? Oh JCM, the Night Flight Plant vocal gymnastics at the end are fun. Sounds like Black Crowes improv. I'm happy you heard buncha Night Flight false starts on that rehearsal tape that leaked in '93. (when I got that I took all the Rover snippets and arranged them in order!) Graffiti has Seaside which is too schmaltzy in patches. Candy Store Rock is Zeppelin on auto pilot. Its just "there". One other thing - Misty Mountain Hop Seattle '73 is pretty good cuz that boot was bitchin the whole way through. Now for mine - Hot Dog studio and especially live, as you know. In My Time Of Dying! Bleh! And why does Hats Off To Roy Harper end Zep III and not Hey Hey What Can I Do? A boogie, a boogie choo! 3/7ths of Out Door is ehhh at best. Hot Dog, South Bound, and Gonna Crawl all harken tha fall. Your ITTOD vinyl collection is a great idiosyncrasy. It was great to see you close up instead of floating in the either! Your location mystery and "limited" backgrounds are good atmosphere, like Presence cover. haha How u not like Sugar Mama? lol. Ever see The Japanese cover band do it? She nails it. Found it last month on a whimsy "Hmm, I wonder if anyone covers Sugar Mama?" and voila, there they were.
