That is why you get red paint 😂. My model 3 has a nice rust spot on the trunk because the trunk and bumper have been rubbing together and the paint flaked off.
Repainting the whole hood for a rockchip is likely cost prohibitive for most people. Its usually 1500. I'm sure there are better alternatives? Understood chip repairs dont look anywhere as nice
Weird, I don't have any front car protection and never had any rusting from any chips. I live in the PNW and rural so I drive on non paved roads and follow many trucks that kick up rocks. Was that extremely unlucky for you then, is it something you commonly experience? For example my 2011 vehicle has 139k miles and I don't have anything like that on it.
They don’t salt the roads in the PNW like where he lives, for exemple MN cars end up as rust buckets after a few years that why most people have winter beater cars to drive on salted roads, hope this helps
@@ruststar Yes I know that but they haven't started salting the roads yet, it's only October. And it's also on the hood, I don't understand how it already is rusted, unless it's a chip that happened last year and he just didn't notice it until now that it's rusting.
I love your videos so much. Its funny that you literally got the hood repainted for one rock chip. But yeah my favorite videos that you make are the ones where you drive your personal cars and discuss life and what not.
Definitely some good info! I just purchased a new Crosstrek Wilderness and got done ppf'ing the entire front and I applied surface shield on the underside. Can now understand why ppf'ing costs so much in terms of labor, it is not easy but worth it on a new car. Surface shield / fluid film / woolwax or some other oil based undercoating should be a must for any car in new england especially a long term car.
Unacceptable! Time to trade it in!!! /s I just got my 2024 CR-V Hybrid back, all the wheels corroded already at 15k miles. Honda replaced all 4 wheels it no questions asked, so that was nice.
It's such a great feeling to find a good body shop. I recently traded in a car because a body shop botched the paint so bad. Good ones are hard to come by!
NJ to philadelphia's walt whitman bridge has those zipperwalls on it. It's not an hov lane, but it shifts a lane depending on time of day for traffic flow.
You’re in the Northeast you know salt+water= rust. Ppf that thang, at a minimum the front end up to the sunroof. They did a really good job. You commission quality I wasn’t worried!
You mentioned getting your Lexus undercoated, there’s a guy I go to in Ayer MA his business is called New England Rust Prevention he uses NH Oil which is very similar to fluid film, I’ve gotten my old truck and my now current civic coated by him he does a great and thorough job. I would encourage checking him out!
Granted this is a rock chip but I feel bad for all the GX issues you’ve had. Got a great deal on a ‘23 about the same time as you got yours and it’s been terrific. Only regret is not pulling the trigger in time to get the Black Line…
I have a few chips on the hood of my IS 500 and have for months. But they still look the same - no rust... I guess that proves it's an aluminum hood instead of a good ole steel one like the GX has. 😂 I will have to get several places on the car fixed at some point. I have a few chips on the rear doors as well, probably from my tires picking things up and throwing them at the sides of the car. Kinda crazy to see something like this on a relatively new car, I must say. But, it looks amazing after the repair.
"Where the Celtics play...and the Bruins" - lol as a hockey fan I was OUTRAGED! you only mentioned the Celtics, and then one second passed and I was like, "Ok, he mentioned them. Back to the car content."
03:41 repainting your Porsche a different color would be wicked. I understand why people like black cars but a classic 911 deserves a brighter color to show off the design imo
2:05 Lexus SUVs are actually the #1 or #2 stolen vehicle in Canada lol. I'm sure you heard that we're having a massive car theft problem in the past year or two. Car thefts went up by something like 3000% over the course of 2 years? Absolutely insane.
Front license plate is not nice on most cars specially lexus, I have the rx350 and I refuse to put the front plate, even though we have to in Texas. Great video 👍
Great work from the bodyshop on the GX ! But please contact a really good detailer first before considering a respray in the same color just because of swirls on your 911 - you'll be stoked about the outcome by a good detailer! 🙂 Best regards from germany!
How much did it end up costing if you don't mind sharing? Loved the work they did and that you shared this experience! 😁Personally, I'm not a fan of the highways being elevated but I've heard from a lot of Boston area colleagues they don't like the Big Dig either (they didn't like the elevated highways too), sooo idk what is better 🤣
All my BMWs when manufactured have their body (body-in-white) galvanized to prevent rust. I have never heard of a hood repainted because of a small paint chip (even when the chip is down to the bare metal). Unless the body was damaged (major dent, accident, etc.) a full hood repaint feels like overkill and most paint shops can perform the repair (even when dealing with a multi-coat paint with clear coat. Love your content but this needs greater clarification as it appears to be an out-of warranty repair.
Rusting from that little chip? My W212 E63 is 14 years old and it has plenty of rock chips in the hood. (road service often uses tiny rockchips in winter instead of or combined with salt) I have used it through central european (alpine) winters for 10 years myself. And there is still no rust of the hood. (it's made of alu and almost all of the chips haven't pierced through the primer. Good primer on there.) I thought Lexus would do better rust protection.
If I had a virtually brand-new luxury car and the hood began to rust from a rock chip, I'd be furious. It shows that the quality is poor and substandard materials were used to make the vehicle, which is unacceptable given the price of the vehicle. I would've taken it to the dealership and demanded a repair under warranty, but chances are they would've done a crappy job. I guess the words "Toyota" and "quality" don't go together anymore. I'd bet that the repainted hood is of a higher quality than the factory paint.
Fully agree. Plus there were little chips in the clear that weren’t through the paint from other rocks. Now it’s perfect again 😂. But Toyotas tend to rust from what I’ve seen. Gotta stay on em
4:35 brought out a core memory of my family Boston trip when I was about 4 years old. 26 years ago! I vividly remember driving next to that bridge in an old 90s Subaru and seeing those street signs standing in front of that view of the skyline. It was cloudy then as well. Weird but cool connection!
My only question is would that rust have occurred on a European or even an American car? Is that a result of Japanese steel? Back in the day the Japanese cars were known to rust out and the sheet metal was not as good. It's gotten better, but is this evidence that it is still not on the same level as, say, a German car?
Repainted the whole hood that has original paint on the GX just because having a small rock chipped? What if it happens again then should you paint the hood over again. I think original paint from Japanese manufacture always better unless you have no choice.
Repainting the entire hood for a small rock chip on a Lexus suv daily makes absolutely ZERO sense. If you cared so much about it you would have ppf’d it from the beginning.
@@TedwardDrives Well, I dont follow supercars, I'm not familiar, not my thing. I'm from Easter Europe and we live by differen rules here. Your yard and cars look extremely impressive to me. Its just that the word beated means something very different here 🤣
