Being able to work with a heavy load and yet have no fan noise was one of the biggest reasons for me to upgrade to the M1 Max 16" from a 2019 MBP. The 2019 model had a Intel i9 processor that simply couldn't be cooled efficiently, as soon as you started any workloads or a few tabs on resource heavy websites, the fans would spin up and be loud as hell non stop. Just to be able to work while feeling calm and not needing to wear headphones to overcome it is so nice.

Between that and battery life are the biggest reasons I’m interested in the new silicon. Otherwise, you can get very nice (or even just good enough) Windows-based laptops for much cheaper. If I were into 3D animation, those Windows laptops would be the way to go, but I also have a beefy desktop for that + gaming. For mobile working, the new Macbooks are super interesting. If the 13.3 inch Pro ditched the stupid touchbar for physical keys, I was very interested in it for the crazy battery life.

Just a heads up, for those working back and forth between pc and macs, formatting the externals for ExFat makes it so you can work with the drive on both machines.

Just use Mac NTFS done, no need to format any drive. You can read and write Mac Drives, fat32,Exfat, ntfs
@TalesOfWar
@TalesOfWar 2 года назад
@@Anthonym_323 ExFAT is supported natively by both platforms without needing to rely on some third party drive like you do with the NTFS support on Mac. Macs can only READ NTFS drives out of the box, they can't write to them. Microsoft charge a fair whack to license that functionality. The only time you really need to have an NTFS drive in Windows is if it's where the actual OS is, or it's part of the indexed network volumes (which newer versions of Windows are pretty shit at doing, incidentally. Try searching on a Windows Server network share lol).

@@zajlord2930 You're thinking of FAT32, exFAT has a much, much, much larger file size limit, the same as NTFS I believe. NTFS is just the native file system for WIndows so the benefit there is that it'll support all the things Windows expects it to support, exFAT doesn't.

Maybe my experience can shortcut the wait a little bit. I bought a MBP in 2014, and found it to be pretty awesome. Photo editing, music remuxing, light video editing. More importantly, it became a "lifebook" for me - web browsing, emailing, schoolwork - the 8 hour battery was a real winner. Even more importantly, it kept up with my daily workflow for almost a decade - I moved some of my video editing to my Windows machine (gaming tower) when I rebuilt it with Ryzen. Last summer I bought myself an M1 MBA and an M1 Mini. I'll set everything up on my MBA, transfer the project to my Mini on an external SSD, and let the Mini render it while I do something else. The new M1 is amazing - it sips battery and is a perfect compliment to whatever I'm doing at the time. It's just.... not great for gaming, although Apple Arcade is working on that.
@kershekfamily
@kershekfamily 2 года назад
I would highly recommend that you find a reviewer that has a workload similar to yours. Unfortunately, almost every reviewer on RU-vid is a 'creative' and their workflows are mainly related editing pictures or movies - tasks that the M1 chips are great at performing. If you have a more traditional workload where you are more concentrating at MS Office type applications, your experience will vary wildly - but most of that is due to MacOS issues vs. Windows. In particular, if you are doing work in MS Excel, the Mac version is pretty bad and then you also have a MacOS issue grouping items under the same task bar icon making it very slow to switch between workbooks - this is why most reviewers have the very large external displays - so you can place things side by side on the monitor for faster C&P. If you don't want to invest a bunch in a large external display, you are better off with Windows if your main workload is MS Office type tasks - and I am saying this as an owner of an M1. If you are used to Windows and like the speed - you will be annoyed by the animations, etc in MacOS that are more tolerable with an M1 chip but still a big cause for frustration.
@isturma
@isturma 2 года назад
@@kershekfamily That's why I tried to give an "everyman" experience - I'm a diehard Windows geek and I'm always upgrading my Windows tower/gaming laptop. My macbook is a computer I live on - web browsing, streaming video, and yes creative work. But I stilll use "office" type applications - the baked-in Pages, Keynote, and I forget their excel replacement because I don't use it, they're more intuitive and robust. They also come included with MacOS and don't require a separate service or purchase. They also export to their microsoft counterparts, and can edit/create PDF. AND I can open them on my ipad or iphone to make last minute edits if need be. It used to be that Mac was only for the creative types, and Windows was for everyone else. But Mac just does everything now, and Windows has.... pc games. Office. Antivirus. And updates when you're trying to work...
@kershekfamily
@kershekfamily 2 года назад
@@isturma "But I still use "office" type applications - the baked-in Pages, Keynote, and I forget their excel replacement because I don't use it, they're more intuitive and robust." - actually, no, they are not. Keynote is great for a 'green screen' add in, but it is no where near a replacement for Powerpoint. Even within MacOS - Powerpoint is materially slower and worse than the equivalent in Windows. Again, this is a MacOS and MSFT issue in that they decided deliver a sub-optimal product. Nothing against the M1 chip - that truly is amazing. But, non-Intel Macs have huge drawbacks. For example, if you are a business students, chances are you will need to do an MS Access project - well, there is no Access for MacOS at all. I use my Mac for everyday tasks as well - surfing the web, watching movies, etc. However, it is also my main laptop for work. In that, the majority applications I use are MS Office. I have yet to render a movie. However, I have to work on Excel, Powerpoint, Word, Outlook about 6+ hours per day. I think this is fairly typical for office jobs. Second, I typically have Teams open all day, Workplace Chat, and an open communicator program like Zalo or Viber. So, for me, the battery life claims mean little unless it replicates this type of load. Now, I will say that my M1 can usually make it through the day with 10-15% remaining. Hence, I have not been able to ditch carrying a charger - but, I know I can go 5 hours in a meeting without needing the charger which is nice to have. My only real complaint is how bad the MS Office office is. I have looked at Parallels but spending an extra $80 PER YEAR seems outrageous to me. I did buy the expanded storage to 512GB with the anticipation I will need to run Windows on the same machine. I just want a better option than Parallels at that cost. Again, your mileage may vary as everyone has a different workload. Just from my perspective, any review that concentrates on movie rendering or picture editing probably does not align with a vast majority of the people actually viewing the videos.

I've found that MacOS stabilized my workflow as a software developer a bunch. I use to distrohop between Elementary OS, PopOS, Ubuntu etc. on a Dell Precision Workstation laptop - was never really satisfied. Now that laptop runs windows and it's fine for my memory intensive work (it's got 80GB of memory) like running VMS, Docker etc. My gaming PC obviously runs Windows and then my homelab server runs Proxmox with multiple guest OS. A little base model MacBook Air is now my daily driver for 70% of stuff. I don't hate Windows or Linux, I just use them when they are the best tool for the job.

@@spacechannelfiver I’m surprised to hear that WSL2 works that well, and conversely, that Brew has been annoying for you. Kinda like pip for python-related tasks. But I’ve also not used Brew, so I can’t really say. I’m just surprised to hear praise for WSL2, as I used MSYS a while back and while it was functional, it never felt like it was anything more than a gimmick/wrapper function like WINE. At the end of the day, I still had Windows foibles to deal with, rather than being on Linux.

I think it’s almost funny how they alienated most of their audience with removing ports and other features and only had worse and worse solutions as Intel cranked the heat up for performance. And now we’re heading back to the glory years when Apple used different silicon, had a beautiful laptop design with MagSafe and a bunch of ports. I still have my Aluminum Powerbook G4 (granted, I bought it well after it was unsupported, but what a cool computer!), and I’m tempted to buy a 16 inch MBP because of how well Apple Silicon will work for what I’m looking for. Great battery life, extremely responsive for web/media consumption and quick enough for code compilation to not feel like I’m missing too much from my normal gaming desktop. And then for games or anything 3D, I have an overkill desktop.

Just an FYI if you switch back to windows, the command+shift+5 equivelant is win+shift+s by default it is a rectangular drag to select area and its copied to your clipboard, but there is a menu at the top of the screen to change this to 'free form'(any shape) 'window snip'(i believe the active window or a window that you select) and 'full screen'. There is a similar option for screen recorting win+alt+r but for some silly reason it only works with "games" or programs you flag as games, so not the desktop. there's probably a registry key for this but i dont care to find it because i generally just use OBS to do this (not strreamlabs)

For photos, videos and browsing it's fine. For light script-based software development too. Like all the other macbook pros before the M1. In my company we all use Macbook pros. I've had several versions of Macbook Pros since 2018 and now I have a M1. For my work I need to run 2 databases, 1 IDE, 1 VM, 1 tomcat server, git, build tools, all browser versions, your regular office tools, email and chat, and a host of utility apps, most of which run concurrently, and performance wise... it's slow... it's slow as hell... it's excruciatingly sloooow, and macOS freezes frequently. Yet I consider myself lucky since I have a 64Gb version while some of my coworkers only have a 32Gb version. Not to mention the noise! The fan blows at full tilt all the time (our IT dept cleans them regularly though). In 2020 our projects were smaller in scope and my Macbook was able to cope with them. It wasn't fast but it was bearable. Today is a different story though. So, I recently bought a high end gaming laptop (about the _same price_ as my macbook) I was going to use it for games but I changed my mind. I installed all my tools on it except all the corporate stuff. My Macbook now serves as a file server, git client and for all the ordinary corp stuff. I mapped my Mac's git folder on my PC (to respect corp policy no IP files copied to non-corp hardware). Despite going over a LAN to read-write files, everything I need to do is orders of magnitude faster (build times reduced by half). I'm not saying it's blazing fast, I'm not saying I'm blown away, I'm saying it's fast enough that I don't need to wallow in despair like before. I can finally work at my normal pace again. I'm not even thinking about the performance issue anymore while I work, and the noise is gone, so for me it's a win (if you ignore the fact that I bought a separate laptop for this with my own money). Of course it's not an apples to apples comparison (no pun intended) in terms of specs, my PC laptop has slightly better specs than my Macbook Pro M1, but that's not the point. The point is the _price._ For a given price, will the machine you choose give you the performance needed for the type of job you're doing? For my specific use case as a full stack software developer, the Macbook Pro doesn't cut it. For the same price I bought a much better machine in terms of "getting work done". YMMV (I anticipate all the fan boys and girls of both worlds will, again, fight over this. You are free to do so. However, as a user of both macOS and Windows I appreciate the qualities of both and have no interest in participating in any of those fruitless mac vs windows "debates". I'll only respond to honest questions and I'll ignore any provocations.)

I felt it. Got a mac from by boss for a week. I convinced him to let be stay on PC (linux). And every summer i hear him say "casnt work, ... its too hot (in the room)". _They are SO expensive and you can use it as web browser ... like a "netbook". Not my world. I want to work, not think about the tool i use._

Those M1 Macs are really great for video and photo editing. The hardware acceleration for video encoding and decoding and for video streaming is really good and efficient. That's all. Also, for web browsing and light use, since the battery is really absurd, but this isn't a "pro" use.

While the Macbook Pro seems great for photo editing and video editing, I do 3D animation and 3D modeling as well as some gaming once in a while. I wish the Macbook Pro can catch up to gaming performances as well as programs like Maya, Blender, Unreal Engine 4, etc.

@Abdulmalik Honestly, wait for more compatibility issues to pan out, because you’ll have performance issues or bugs for non-native apps especially for 3D related work. Unfortunately, I think Windows is still the way to go for safety of making sure everything will work. If you were just doing software development, I can’t imagine that you would have too many issues, but I’m not sure if there’s any CAD software that would work as well on Mac, especially ARM-based Macs.

Blender runs amazing on the m1 pro. viewport performance is very nice especially with 120hz. plus there is very nice trackpad support for blender that windows devices don't have quite yet check out blender patch D7660 Add support for precision touchpad gestures on Windows. For blender i say this laptop is awesome especially with apple on the devfund support for metal GPU.

Great laptop but for most people it won’t be needed. Most RU-vidrs review this with their workflow in mind and the screen panel is even calibrated for video editing in mind. When I say most people I’m referring to people who will just be using the laptop for web surfing, office documents and watching RU-vid.

4,400$ CAD goshhhhh. Seems like an awesome machine however, I was interested at first, but when I saw the price, I feel I don't really need it that much. I like that you invest in your tool to be more efficient and you are willing to take risk changing os and all. What is weird is, I also make a living working on a PC (office job), but it's a damn old Lenovo t470s that cost less than 500$. I ask for an upgrade as I would like to be more efficient and less bug and wait time (since my time is costly) and they refused (I also can't buy my one for security reason), it's crazy !

M1 is a game changer and makes it more compelling than ever. I'd say there are some compromises, but well worth it if you don't need to game on the go. My switch and future Steam deck will fill that void for me.

I've been using my Surface Book 2 for quite a while now. As a web developer, it is starting to struggle more and more lately as my main project evolves and tech stacks start to get more complex. Also, this machine throttles like really a lot. I've been considering an upgrade but I am really attached to this machine for what it can do and its design compared to the rest of the Windows laptops even for as recent as 2022, and I can't consider any machine a serious upgrade besides the MacBook Pro M1 14". There's a lot of compromises coming from a Surface device, no Windows Hello, no touch screen and pen support (I use to take notes on OneNote sometimes, and draw on it in some rare occasions), no detachable screen (but is it really something I use or more like a party trick?). On the other hand, M1 seems so incredibly performant it blows away my current setup, and ARM is definitely the future we should be pushing for personal computing. I also have never used MacOS in my life, and it seems bootcamping into Windows on M1 is still not an option, if it ever will be, so the switch makes me a little nervous. Having the ability to emulate iOS and test on real Safari locally would be a great bonus though.
