I'd get lost in a big house xD Also if you lose your keys or your phone.....you'll have a lot of places you'll need to check in a big place hahaha Small spaces can be made so cute and homely sometimes :3 (also....cheaper heating bill c; ) A place like that sounds so cute tho ahh! i'd love to be able to showcase peoples art on my walls
Mikan: It's really messy in here Me: Was totally expecting things to fall out and was little disappointed. I'm totally re-evaluating my version of messy now.
Friendly reminder to Try not to hang cardingans made of wool like that for too long because it may end up losing its shape and looking like it has a hunchback!!
Your apartment is lovely, you’re doing such a great job adulting! Couple of organizational things I thought of while watching - you could get shelves/dividers/boxes to put inside your kitchen cupboards to utilize the horizontal space as they’re actually quite spacious but you’re only using the bottom bit. Muji has great items for organizing and can be affordable! In your room too, I think if you’re able to stack things upwards like you did with your fridge, microwave, toaster you’ll be able to have things more out of the way and organized and even gain on floor space ☺️❤️
I think a really important detail to mention is if you pay for utilities as well on top of your rent or if they’re included! Like water, electricity, wifi, etc.
Omg imagine if they made a pan with 2 separate halves; you could cook 2 things in the same pan if you only had one stove!? I wonder if that's even a thing 0v0
Actually, we own one of these, it's round and has three divisions and is quite deep, so it's good for cooking pasta, and frying eggs and stuff. I just do not know what it's called but I bought it online
its weird how the space looked smaller when it was empty. Id need a normal bath and a bit more of a kitchen though. and a Tv! lol Id feel so alone with out netflix going on in the background.
I adore u mikan. U are independent girl ! I love yiu. Stay safe and healthy. I would love to go to japan but still cant make it eventhou I am 25 this year. As long as u happy , go for it. !
As someone that’s lived in “everything is bigger in America, even the people” America all her life, lol, this is wild. You’ve organized it well! It’s cute & cozy. But wow less than 100 sq ft, that really blows my mind. Incredible. But kind of crazy for the price, no? Japan must be super expensive. Or it could be Tokyo. New York City is just as disgusting when it comes to price per sq ft. Lol Excellent video though, Mikan. Surprised you didn’t give us a ‘welcome to my crib’ intro
I mean her bedroom is bigger than my bedroom.... Sure I live in a house so the bathroom and kitchen are normal sized but I LIVE in my bedroom. Its weird to me to be able to have a DESK in her room. Mines literally just a bed with the left side and the front with enough room for an average person to stand. One dresser as well. Shrug.
For the fairy lights, I always use Command Damage-Free Stick On Wall Hooks then you can hook the wire of the light through them, I'm sure you can find something similar in Japan! You can get clear plastic ones so you can't see them, and they don't leave a mark on the wall 💡✨
I don't understand why all outlets can't be the same lol. You've come a long way and transformed your space and it's super cute and organized! I also love your hair color! Your boyfriend has good taste and gets you adorable things! Edit: *I love that lip balm, it's sooo cute!!!* Oh! Is it true that it's illegal in Japan to have outlets in the bathroom?
gosh i dont really know i didnt have an outlet in the bathroom in the uk either so i never thought about it! but considering the whole place gets wet when i shower i wouldn't want it there anyway haha and thank you so much!!
@@mikanmandarin aw no problem! :) I asked because I was watching a video of this couple who went to Tokyo and she was talking about how there were no outlets in the bathroom because it was illegal to blow dry your hair in there LOL. They were staying in a hotel but I forgot the name of it:/ I mean, it makes sense I suppose...considering the steam and wetness. The Japanese are considerate when it comes to not wanting people getting electrocuted aha ♡
@@Aly_224 I'm not 100% sure...I was wondering myself. A couple months ago I was watching a video a couple made on their trip to Tokyo from America and the hotel they stayed at didn't have outlets in the bathroom and the girl made a comment saying it was illegal to dry your hair in the bathroom there. Thats the 1st I've heard about it but then again I'm not sure lol
Ashley Bishop it's not illegal but you really shouldn't have an outlet in your bathroom. It's the same in the uk. It's just health and safety regulations, just blow dry ur hair in another room lol
Woh, it's way cheaper than I would have think ! It's basically the size of my parisian appartment, and it's less expensive ahah But it is probably because you moved your own things I think. Anyway, it's my first time commenting one of your videos even tho I watched yours since a while :o Love from France ♥
i remember when i went to vist some of my family in japan i was so shocked on how every single family’s apartment was so tiny and when they came to vist me in australia they were really shocked on how big it was but it probably is cause it’s a six bedroom penthouse
I would get a white basket to put your hair stuff in instead of a bag.Might be easier to oick out what you want. Maybe you could also get another one of those drawer stands ( like the one in your closet) and have it to keep your hair dryer in and maybe put your kettle on top? *shrug* just a suggestion. Otherwise it is very well organized. It is healthy to learn how to keep your "stuff" to a minimum. You learn to have the necessities and realize you don't need *things* to make you feel fulfilled
KoKi Top people are always so scared of tap water. Unless it’s not recommended to do (by locals of health organisations) there’s nothing to worry about. The only place I didn’t drink tap water as far as I remember was in Taiwan, my mother-in-law discouraged me to do it as it’s nothing like the water back home and you can get sick.
Great video, your appartment is so cute , I like how you organize and decore, 16 mt2 for Japan I think is great and only for you even better and not only cozy, is so close to all your activities, that is really great 👍 Also I don't comment all the time, but I follow you for a while and I really love your videos because I know very muvh about Japan and his culture, I really love it, thanks for share this with us ❤
I always want to live in a small home alone independent away from the place where i live in some other country living my life.. studing... enjoying but it is dream.. i don't know that it will come try.. after one month my school will end.. 😧😧
Hey, you can never have too much university haha! Have you thought about grad school? If you are planning to go to Japan they have a really cool MEXT scholarship! You can find videos on it! I would totally strive for that if I wasn't tied down with my pets that I can't fly with easily (chinchillas).
I think its cute! I agree that small spaces are perfect for people who don’t host parties and such. My old place was about that size but in Shizuoka city an only cost me 45,000¥!! Now Im on Nerima about 13 minutes from the nearest station but I have a loft, a separate toilet and bath, and a kitchen with a full fridge and a two burner stove all for 60,000¥! I really love my place and its peaceful this far from the station, but at the end of the day in Tokyo the most important thing for price is how close any station is, so if you like walking look for places far away and you can get more perks for less. I used a company call Kimiwillbe and they were SO GREAT! Highly recommend them!
thanks for letting me know about your company! i think it'd be really useful for people who want to live in japan so ill suggest it some time in a video! do they speak english? ur apartment sounds great btw!
What my dad does with pasta is he makes the sauce a while before he makes the actual pasta that way it’s not boiling hot and you don’t need to panic about swapping it
I find it super interesting the way that Tokyo apartments are portrayed in anime vs what they are in reality. In animes that I've watched they're always spacious with a separate bedroom
You're apartment looks so lovely! It reminds me of my living arrangements from when I was on exchange in Osaka ^__^ I personally like living in small spaces as appose to large (when living alone at least). It feels more cozy and manageable - like your own personal little space
I love how cozy and small this is! When I went to Japan last year I fell in love with the country and didn’t want to leave. Good for you for going out of your comfort zone to move there!
To hang things up, in the US we have little clear plastic things called Command hooks, there is probably something similar there. And all of the 100 yen stores will have storage things you can pick up as you go along. That's part of the pleasure of making your own home, so no need to be in a rush, just enjoy the process.
Wow and here I'm complaining about 16m2 room in a shared apartment! And you have EVERYTHING in the 16m2.. Im impressed! Oh ps: of course I do my ketchup in the fridge :O
I love the space the apartment provides, actually!! I’ll agree that the kitchen is very small, but you’ve clearly made accommodations for such an issue, and that’s very good!!
I really enjoyed this video and ur apartment is good for a single person and I'd love to live in that apartment . I love you and ur channel and I enjoy ur videos a lot I think u r really beautiful and Kind pls do a skincare vdo or vdo on whatever you do with your skin cuz it's amazing and flawless !
OMG that apartment is the size of my bedroom, I wouldn't be able to live in such a small place, Its amazing how its so organized and yet you say is a mess 😂
I WANNA LIVE THERE EDIT: okay the entrance and kitchen are very tiny and I’m kinda claustrophobic and I’m having second thoughts- but i love your bedroom and aesthetic i want
If you want to use something other than white tack I use these little clear hooks which come with a tiny bit of adhesive that don't take off any paint/leave marks on your wall when you take them off! They come up on amazon if you type in "clear wall hooks" or "command decorative clips". They work super well and aren't too expensive either! :))
I love your apartment! I really feel like living in a small space and living alone is way less messy than sharing with people you may or may not know very well. I lived in a pretty similar apartment in Coimbra, Portugal, that was also around 16m² (or maybe a little bit less) that was brand new, furnished, had a small balcony and was well positioned AND I only paid 190 euros (215 dollars) with all my living expenses (light, water, internet, etc) included. It was DAMN cheap and I loved living alone but I HATED cooking at home because the whole apartment would smell like food. I like yours better because even though it's only 16m², it has a more square shape so you can walk around more freely, mine was a freaking rectangle and I felt trapped whenever someone visited me. Those two windows also make it look more open. Before that I also lived in another apartment that was a little bit bigger than the other one and the bedroom and kitchen were separated by a wooden sliding door and that made such a big diference! But alas I paid 320 euros (363 dollars), living expenses also included. The apartment was more convenient, and it was still cheap I guess, but those 215 dollars with expenses included were such a rare find, I felt really lucky. EDIT: I really like these videos where you show us stuff while you film. It's so much better than a voice-over because I feel like you sound so relaxed and honest! Keep it up!
your apartment is so cute! and just caters to your everyday routine which is something I imagine you'd need if you're living by yourself in a fairly small space. Its very cute
I used to live in a three story house in North America so thinking about living in an apartment that small freaks me out I mean we literally had 4 bed rooms 4 bathrooms 2 living rooms an office a small lounge/ library space a full kitchen and separate dining room. I very impressed at how you handle being in a small space as well as you do.
i'd like to live in a place that small just to force me to declutter all my stuff and be more proactive with minimalism. My apartment is around 600 square ft (in the US) and i feel like i have so much stuff comparatively to you and your place. i have more books on my bookcase than all the things you own! XD but i've always thought living in like a tiny house or a small compact apartment would be fun to do, as long as it was set up that everything would be convenient! like i'm not sure I could do the tiny kitchen - i think that would get on my nerves haha
For the hanging wall decoration thing, you can get little hooks that stick onto the wall and can be easily removed, they're pretty inexpensive and can be bought in bulk, i have tons of them and they really help me to decorate my room, so that's a little tip for you 😂😊
I cant live in a 16m2 appartement 😱 I live actually with 11 other ppl and just our rooms are just as big as your flat... and this is tiny for me too 😂 I lived in a 60m2 flat with my mom for 15 years straight. Then with others in a house and now in a big flat. I need the space 😅 and wow I think your rent is pretty much! I have to pay 207€ for a bigger room. And my new flat with two other kn february are even less expensive then your flat 😱 But your decoration is very pretty 💕
UUh you were really lucky! The bedroom has so much light and it's something really rare for japanese house. I vote to not buy a desk because it would take too much space in my opinion v-v BUT how can you sleep with the fridge in the same room, that thing could never make me sleep for the noise it makes.
You can get these white plastic hooks that stick to the wall, and when you’re done there’s a tab you can pull and they come right off without damaging the wall. They’re commonly sold under the brand name Command. Hopefully you’ll be able to find them in Japan or order them online. They work really well!
Mikan: this storage is really messy *Me expecting everything to fall out when she opens it* That storage is literally more organised than any cupboard i possess lmao
There are these adapters which enable you to put different pots on top of each other, so you can cook, or keep warm, different things at the same time when you have just one hob. They are mostly used in my country for camping, but I can imagine them being convenient for you too.
I loved watching this. I once lived in a small studio myself. This is better than a typical studio in the US bc it has separation. My studio was just one big open room with everything in it and a bathroom shoved off by the entrance. If I was up late it would disturb my husband, if he had to be up late and I was sleeping. You get the picture. While to me this space is rather small you seem to be using it rather well. Like another comment said some small wall shelves would be perfect to help store stuff. You could perhaps get a mini wall shelf/floating shelf for next to your little fridge so you can have you kettle and other cooking things off the ground a little. Maybe put the kettle ansdthe toaster together. And as for those ovens you can basically bake anything on the smaller side. Like a small batch of brownies or a small cake. Maybe some baked pasta. It just might take longer depending on how hot yours gets. I have a similar one at home that is basically just a mini portable oven and I use it a lot to heat frozen foods. Also perfect for grilled cheese sandwiches tbh. That’s about all I got to add. I hope helps some. I like your apartment. Very cute.
Loved this vid❤️ also a bit random but when I do pasta here in the U.K. I cook the pasta in one saucepan then drain it and put the pasta sauce straight into the saucepan with the drained pasta and heat it up on the hob for a couple more mins till it’s done - I do it just bc I don’t want to wash two saucepans hut maybe you could do that? Haha xx
do you mean like ready pasta sauce? i dont really like those and usually cook from scratch so i have to leave one or the other to cool while i make the second one regardless!
I had a second hand toaster oven when I was in Japan that was worse than that one. Same size, but it only had one heat setting (600W) and a timer which could run up to 15 minutes. I baked a lot in there. Potatoes, pizza, cookies, bread. But to this day, I think the pinnacle of my baking skills was how I veganized my mom's Stollen recipe (German christmas cake), found fitting ingredients in Japan and baked two of them in the toaster oven by putting tinfoil on top after two minutes so it doesn't burn and then just resetting the timer over and over :D So honestly, I think you can make literally anything in there, any baked goods you can think of, there's a way to make it work. :)
"yeah i have too much food" **flashbacks to her empty fridge** Me: huh. seriously though, your appartment is lovely, and i have the same space but you are so much more tidy than me xD i feel bad for owning so much crap and for being so lazy lolol "the outside world!" gosh youre adoreble :D haha
I honestly just love all your videos. like watching them and just relaxing is everything and I love when they're long too! you make your room work great, awesome upload!!
Something you can make in the oven OR microwave is mug cakes! They're super simple and single serving cakes that don't need a lot of space to cook so you can whip one up really fast in the microwave or mini oven. They're tasty too! So moist and warm! There's tons of recipes online if you just Google "mug cake recipe".
Look into things like skillet lasagne when you want a pasta dish. You cook the sauce, then add some more water and add the dry pasta to the sauce, and boil away until the pasta is cooked, then top with cheese.
I’ve got another tip, I don’t know if it will help so much but when u take a shower, u put the shower curtains inside the bath tub so it doesn’t come out and yeah and so if u successfully do it at the end, u can avoid the water coming out but don’t do this for a bath cuz then u will end up with a soaking wet shower curtain
I keep my ketchup in the fridge. My bottle says to "refrigerate after opening". Same thing with jam. I lived with some people from Mexico (when I lived in CA), and they kept their jam in the cupboard. That might have been because they didn't read English. I don't know, but it is not safe. I feel like whatever works for you, DO! I also only have 1 stove top, and I live in the USA. It is frustrating when cooking. Especially for me, since my husband and I can not afford to eat out, so I manage to get the food out mostly hot. Rice is easy, because I can cook it and set it aside to steam some more in it's pot on the counter. I don't have a rice cooker, so I just have to do it manually. Sometimes I steam my veggies in with the rice. The important thing is that it's nutritious and tastes good. We can't drink the tap water here. I don't know what's in our water, but I don't trust it. The town is always putting stuff in the water. Where my Mom lives in Arizona, they put chlorine and fluoride. It's nasty! When her water comes out of the tap, it smells like your in an indoor swimming area. It's almost bad enough to burn your eyes from the fumes (I might be more sensitive than others to smells.). That shower-head would HAVE to go. Everywhere we move, I always bring a shower head of my own, because I feel like I'm wasting water and not even getting clean with the water going in all directions except for on me. I live in the middle of nowhere AZ, USA in a 1 room house. Our space is about 3 times bigger than yours, but it's myself, my husband and my 3.5 year old. Our place leaks only when the clouds gush rain and it's windy. I like this place though. My husband and I do not want a large place with lots of rooms. If we have a large place, then we would always be cleaning it (we have a toddler. They are always making messes.) and we wouldn't have time for fun stuff.
I love knowing you but please don't easily say your location cause im worried some stalkers might follow you home and we know japan not that im saying that its a bad environment its just popular for stalkers so stay safe!
i havent said my location! just a train line that's easy for me to get to but that could be like hundreds of places in tokyo since that's the most popular train line in tokyo haha dont worry!!
