I love your mom’s honest observations and the 2 positive things that she pointed out are exactly the 2 things Malaysia are known for (in a positive light) ie food and people. It warms my heart and made me shed a little tear (I’ve been following her journey since she got here) towards the end of the video. Two things I want to comment on : 1. Motorcycle jackets were worn that way because normally the wind and the rain will hit the rider from the front side. It’s too warm and too restrictive to totally button the jackets up 2. I agree that even in the capital city, Malaysia is not handicapped and pedestrian friendly. I think the issue was raised a few years ago but nothing happened. 3. I chuckled at the big spoon comment. I think (I could be wrong), the amount of rice we put in our hand is even more than what we can fit on the big spoon. So actually, for us, the spoon is not big enough 😅 Anyway, I’ve only ever followed your videos since you brought your mom here. Her experience is such a joy to watch. I hope mom and dad enjoyed their time in Malaysia and would come again.

Malays usually eat with the right hand. What is the rationale and why do Malays eat with their hands? This question was answered easily at the end of the 19th century by a royal relative of Kedah who lived in Selangor named Tengku Kudin. This matter was told by a wife of a high-ranking British officer who served in Selangor at that time in her book "Chersonese - The Guilding Off" by Emilly Innes. One day Tengku Kudin was invited by the British Resident to attend a dinner at the resident's house. When all the invited guests were ready to face the meal, Tengku Kudin suddenly got up towards the water tap and washed his hands. Ignoring everyone else's use of spoons and forks, he lazily fed food into his mouth with his hands...! Tengku Kudin's antics were noticed by an English woman who happened to be sitting next to him. Feeling intrigued by Tengku Kudin's behavior, the woman then asked: "Why do you eat with your hands? Isn't using a spoon and fork cleaner and more polite?" Tengku Kudin sloppily answered loudly and could be heard by others. He said: "I eat with my hands for at least three reasons: First: I know my hands are cleaner than spoons and forks because I wash them myself - no one else. The spoon and fork were washed by other people who were not necessarily clean enough. Second: I'm sure my hands are cleaner because I'm the only one who uses them - never borrowed by someone else, whereas the spoon and fork are used by many people Third: I believe my hands are cleaner because they never fall down the drain...!!" Tengkun Kudin's answer left everyone who heard it speechless. If before that there were some of them who smiled cynically when they saw Tengku Kudin feeding his food with his hand but after that each of them nodded maybe because they thought there was logic in the answer. Science has proven that our fingers have enzymes that help digestion. That's why it is good to eat with your fingers... it helps digestion... Using water bidet @ bum gun to wash your bum is also very clean, instead of using tissue... don't you watched people doing forensics? They wash everything including corpse using water, not tissue... 😅

Your mother asked a valid point regarding how difficult it is for those with disabilities to get around KL. Most pavements have uneven surfaces and are rather small. It's challenging for those who use wheelchairs as well as prosthetic leg users. I speak from personal experience as a double amputee. In addition to being small, the pavement is crowded with motorcycles parked on it. which makes things harder for us to deal with.

Surprisingly (or not surprisingly) this happens a lot to me too, especially during breakfast. Either I get a free nasi lemak or someone already paid the bill for the next 10 person in queue. So we started to pay it forward, which means other people will get their breakfast paid. I guess that’s why this never ends when people started paying forward.

I am a motorist, the reason we wear the jacket backward :- i. it is easier, take less time to wear it ii. the back doesn't matter because the wind is in the front iii. if it's raining, the front get wet when riding, the back less wet iv. the passenger cover the back, they have to wear jacket to cover their back v. most jacket are long, by wearing it backward it can cover our legs when raining, it is not the same if wearing them properly

You'll notice that our spoons are thinner- so we use the side of the spoon to cut the meat. I'm ashamed to say most of our toilets are awful when it comes to cleanliness and dryness. And yes, you are expected to bring your own tissue. We don't have a walking culture here and yes, it's very wheelchair unfriendly. But like you said, Malaysians will stop and help when the situations requires it. I read somewhere from a traveller who said that Malaysia is the best country to visit if you're travelling with a baby as you will always get more help than you need with the baby, anywhere, anytime. As a Malaysian, we are very warm hosts who are proud of our culture and especially our food. We will be disappointed when you don't like a certain thing, but we also appreciate your honest opinion. And then we will challenge ourselves to introduce you to something more to your style and that you will like. Overall, it was great to see a middle aged (no offence meant- it's just to emphasise that at that age one can be quite set in their ways and can have certain expectations in Life) caucasian couple trying everything and giving honest opinions. As you have experienced, eating here is very serious but can be very casual with no airs- if you don't like it, you can spit it out. No one will take offence. Both of you are such good sports. I do hope you will take back with you many great memories of Malaysia.

It's good to hear the comments from your mum and the way she observe the cultural differences. As a Malaysian, eating with our hand (right hand as the left hand is for something else 😇) actually taste better...but it's usually for plain rice with side dishes and not for fried rice which are mostly eaten using a spoon and sometimes with a fork as well. And I can understand the shock when she noticed that we can have rice for breakfast, lunch and dinner (and sometimes for supper as well) as rice is very much a staple food here. Welcome to this part of the world, Diane and hope you'll have many fond memories of Malaysia. We're getting so used to seeing you on JetLag and will certainly miss you when you go back to Canada. 😊❤

Nevertheless we learnt each others' culture and gradually adapting to it with time! 😁 Like the expats. 😂 6️⃣🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟👍🏻
