Your mom is beautiful, just like you and your sister. I remember the relaxer days and I can associate with what your mom spoke about the salon experiences. My problem with relaxers was the fact that I sweat profusely in my head and I could hear and feel the steam from the sweat in my head. I was wasting money. I am also a retired stylist! Anyway, I am natural now and if I want to straighten my hair, I will blowdry and flat iron my hair to achieve that look. Thanks for sharing your stories with us.

I did the big chop about five days ago. I had always wanted to go natural. It was when I had my daughter that I started to really appreciate natural hair. I did this not just myself, but because I want my daughter to love everything about herself. She has 4c hair just like me. And I want her to love her hair. It's her crown and glory from God just as it is.

And my granddaughter remove her braids and her afro is big as Joy el. Her mom put one relaxer on her when she was 11, never again . She is 15 now love her natural hair.. Y’all are so cute together! And your mom reminds me of my mom. I’m the only one of my siblings who doesn’t have a hair type as close to hers sadly. Hers is type 4b, while my siblings are all 3b/3c and I’m 2c/3a, very wavy and curly loosely and quick to grow back. Still my hair gave her the most trouble because it was extremely thick growing up and easily got tangled all the time kind of like doll hair, I think that’s from her and my grandma never letting me cut it though!

So many will build the confidence they should have. Enough of attempting to live up to the euro and the American so-called standards of beauty. Embrace who you are - this is key. I think so many insecurities would be non-existent (men and women), if we accept who we are and NOT allow others dictate how we should look. And men - you can learn a lot from this video too. Man in the 70s people grew big big super fly afros , their hair bounced and got there before them . Joy-el you look like the girl I was in love with . Mom is right , you're REALLY BEAUTIFUL and So Pretty. To me Jheri curl was the worst thing ever , it smelled and got all over everything . I heard there was a lot of products that were made out of chemicals that might cause cancer .

I had a friend who was married to a white man. When her daughter was about a little under one, her mom came home and start telling her over and over, “You can’t have no nappy hair.” Her husband remarked, “When if she does?” Mom replied, “ She’ll shave her head. Rather her be bald then hair like that.”
