there is also a stark contrast between brooks and red being released. When brooks is released they show the prison because it is where he wants to be. When red is released the outside is shown because red has a reason to want to leave.

I watched this movie with my mother, a woman who does not like cursing or violence in her movies, and she absolutely loved it. She said that you expect, or at least hope, that a prison movie would have a satisfying ending. You don't really expect it to have a "gloriously happy ending."
@Kenny-ep2nf

Exactly, this movie's one of a kind
@Widdekuu91
@Widdekuu91 11 месяцев назад
I also think it's important hów the violence or cursing is depicted. I strongly dislike violence in movies, especially with helpless victims, but my favorite movie is Das Experiment (Standford Experiment.) The violence is shown, in gruesome detail sometimes, but nobody thinks it is justified nor is it glorified. It is seen as a horrible situation that should be stopped. One of my petpeeves is when violence (especially against the helpless) is being glorified or when you can 'gloat' over a terrorist being mangled and tortured or something. I've watched a movie with someone that loved violence in movies and would happily watch a person get tortured or graped and he would fully support the "hero" (main character) that did it, even if he shot pregnant women or broke promises to prisoners (said he would help them in exchange for information and then violently tortured them to death as a punishment for their 'stupidity to trust him.' ) I never want to see one of thát sortof movies again. It is incomparable with movies that have violence in them though.

@@Widdekuu91 yeah the violence in the movie was more of a tragic scene than it was anything else

One of my favorite details in terms of filmography is the comparison between Brooks's release and Red's. As Brooks leaves the prison, the camera is in front of him so we see the prison behind him. His mind is still trapped there. When Red leaves, the camera is behind him, showing the outside world. He's got something to look forward to on the outside. He has hope.

@gluuuuue

When Brooks releases Jake and tells him he’s “free”, it’s interestingly symbolic. Most wild animals that are raised from infancy to live as pets for so long end up lacking any knowledge or ability to fend for themselves when simply released into the wild, and frequently have even shorter life expectancies than always wild/feral animals.
@IBeforeAExceptAfterK
@IBeforeAExceptAfterK 10 месяцев назад
In the novella, that's exactly what happens. Not long after Brooks dies, the guys find Jake dead in the prison yard. He couldn't make it on the outside either.
@ScalexCzech
@ScalexCzech 11 месяцев назад
It's also important to note that the word "redemption" in the film's title refers to Red, not Andy. Andy had nothing to redeem himself from, he was innocent. Red committed multiple killings (he damaged his wife's car brakes to kill her, but then she was driving with several other people who died in the car with her), so he had something to redeem himself from. There is one other thing in the novella that they didn't put in the movie. Shortly after Brook passes away, the prisoners find Jake dead on the grounds. He starved to death because he too was institutionalized and couldn't handle himself in freedom.

A few years ago I was in an accident and I ended up 6 months in the hospital. Before my accident, all I did was spend my time in front of a computer, never went anywhere, did anything. I fought like hell in the hospital, I had to learn how to walk again and how to live with limited mobility. The whole time I was in the hospital, I kept repeating two quotes over and over to give myself strength. The birthday toast from The Count of Monte Cristo, and the "It takes 10 times longer to put yourself back together as it does to fall apart" from The Hunger Games series. When i Was finally home, finally out, finally free, my brother looked at me and said 'You're gonna have to take it slow' and I looked at him, smiled a bit and said "Get busy living, or get busy dying" Since I came out of the hospital almost 9 years ago, even though I have limited mobility, I went to France numerous times, I went to Chicago, Toronto, Rimouski, Halifax, Boston, New York and last April, finally, I visited Galaxy's edge at Disney world. I will not ever again get busy dying.

Stephen King. The undisputed master of storytelling. Soo wonderful. My favorite part is “Salvation lies within.” It’s such an amazing bit of foreshadowing. Simply amazing. Arguably the best movie ever made. A testament to friendship and HOPE. So glad you enjoyed it, Jen. There’s a term called “shawshanked” attributed to this movie. It refers to catching a movie in the middle, and staying for the rest, because anytime you come across this one…no matter what part it’s on, you HAVE to finish watching. Pretty accurate.

One of those movies that didn’t do very well at the box office, but I remember when I had scoliosis surgery in 1996, my hospital room had a Shawshank Redemption poster. The film basically launched Morgan Freeman’s career as a voice actor. Now he’s everywhere in that role and for good reason. I still see him as the perfect God movie character, too. I also like that Tim Robbins (of IQ, which you guys already saw) holds his own next to Freeman and it’s a crime neither of them were nominated for Oscars. Clancy Brown, who famously played The Kurgan in Highlander and Mr Krabs in SpongeBob, is terrific here too as the head guard. His voice alone is great for a villain and he’s a terrific actor. This is one of those movies that puts you through a lot for an amazing payoff.

Almost all the main characters including all the villains and supporting characters gave extremely good performances. Because they were all outstanding performances, you get so drawn into the movie as it proceeds that you forget you are watching a film. I love Tom Hanks' films but the one criticism I have for most of them (the green mile being the only exception) is that the supporting characters performances are completely overshadowed by his. I am glad Tom Hanks didn't play Andy Dufresne in this one.

Red stopped telling the Parole Board what they wanted to hear, basically giving them an annual speech, and instead spoke from the heart. It made the parole officer finally engage with him. That made all the difference in finally being approved. It showed he'd actually given thought and consideration to his life and the consequences of his actions.

What always hits me about Brooks being tossed out of prison is the cultural changes that have taken place since 1905. The US has had two World Wars,. The Wright Brothers flew two years before Brooks was incarcerated, but the first commercial flight occurred ten years after he went in. There were a few cars back in 1905, but now they're everywhere. There were telephones, but he's likely never experienced every home and business having a private phone line or a handset. Mainly, it's the social changes. Women got the vote; they commonly work jobs outside the home. Brooks can't walk the street without having to actively pay attention to his environment in ways most of us handle as thoughtless habit. And always the fear that he'll screw up and people will get mad at him. Most of his life he's never had to make a decision, and now people can't understand how he could struggle with that. And he's an ex-con; hard to develop friends...

The human spirit is a beautiful thing to witness in those moments of quiet desperation, where one among us refuses to give way to despair, choosing to dare to, in defiance, hope. To quote a man with words greater than any I have in this moment: "A man with a why can endure any how." Thank you for allowing me to experience this encapsulation of a man's journey to transcend injustice. A vicarious joy. I appreciate you taking the time to read my comment. Take care and God bless. ✝️

The ending of the film was ambiguous - not knowing if Red would end up like Brooks or not. But preliminary audiences wanted Red and Andy to reunite, so Darrabont filmed the beach reunion scene and added it to the end before the movie was released.....superb cast, including the wonderful James Whitmore as Brooks.
@rickylyon3846
@rickylyon3846 11 месяцев назад
Yes and no. The orginal ending was Red in the bus saying ''I hope''. There was no ambiguity about him ending up like Brooks. The audience was just left with the same questions Red asks himself: Can he cross the border? Will he find his friend? But the studio (Castle Rock) decided they wanted those questions answered too and forced Frank Darabont to shoot a reunion scene. Darabont decided to shoot the beach scene with no dialogue and shot from afar as a snub to the studio.

G'Day. Shawshank was filmed in Mansfield, Ohio. The prison was the Ohio State Reformatory. The main building you see and Cell Block 1 are now a museum that you can tour. They also have Mystery Weekends, and for the brave; overnight stays in a cell. (rumored to be haunted). The street scenes, the Halfway House (the Bissman Building), and the market (E & B Market (now torn down) on 4th Street are in Mansfield. I was lucky to be an extra con in prison yard scenes. The premiere for the movie was held at Mansfield's Renaissance Theatre (a restored 1929 movie palace); then New York and Los Angeles. The prison was also used in the movie, "Tango & Cash", and the Russian Cell Block in the "American President". An interesting side note: In the winter months, crows fly in from 7 or 8 counties: there used to be granaries between town and the prison. I am now 75 with Parkinson's and don't get to go see movies much, so I like seeing reaction videos.

In about 2003 I was watching tv with my mom and looking for something that we both could tolerate. I happened upon the first Red parole hearing and suggested we watch it. I had seen the movie a dozen times or so by then, but my mom had only seen parts of it here and there. "Is it any good?" "I think you'll like it." As the movie went on she got so into it and she liked to guess what would happen like your mom (good job on her for guessing the carved out Bible), so she had a lot of fun with putting everything together. And of course the Brooks and Tommy deaths got to her, but then the escape and the end lifted her spirits like so many others. It was my favorite movie watching experiences ever. My mom died in 2021 and I miss her dearly, but watching Shawshank reaction videos (yours obviously especially hit home) brings me comfort. RIP Mom

Great story, outstanding direction and acting of actors, music, camera... The movie flow in very peaceful way, no big drama, no loud action scenes, no expensive visual effects. Just downearth simplicity but also complexity of everything. There is one more movie in this category you should watch. But this is not Hollywood production. It's masterpiece of Japan kinematography. I strongly recommend to watch it and I am also VERY curious for your reaction. The movie called Twilight Samurai. And main role is played by familiar face. Don't do research. Let be surprised ;) It really worth it. Very atypical "samurai" movie. So serene... And probably right because of that is best. Enjoy it!

🤣 This "meme" is of a Brazilian actress in a soap opera scene. The actress is called Renata Sorrah and the character is Nazaré. She was a funny villain. 🤣

I completely respect your research. Look up James Whitmore: Brooks. He had an amazing career. He was also in 2001's The Majestic with Jim Carrey.

Tom Hanks was offered the role of Andy Dufresne, but he had to turn it down because he was working on Forrest Gump and James Cromwell was offered the role of the Warden, but he turned it down for some reason, I don't remember why. They both appeared the next year in the movie The Green Mile- Tom Hanks as Paul Edgecomb, the chief guard and James Cromwell as the Warden, Hal Moores. Jeffrey DeMunn (the Prosecuting Attorney at the beginning) and William Sadler (Heywood) and Brian Libby (Floyd) also appeared in The Green Mile. DeMunn played the guard Terwilliger, Sadler played Klaus Detterich, the father of the two girls that John Coffey was falsely accused of killing, and Libby played Sheriff McGee, the one that arrested John Coffee, and John Horton (The Judge that sentenced Andy) played a judge in another movie based on a Stephen King novel, Thinner. Several real life prison guards offered to give Clancy Brown advice on how to make his performance more realistic, but he turned them down because he was playing an evil character and he didn't want it to reflect negatively on any of them.

It always cracks me up seeing that they somehow let Tommy keep his leather jacket coming into prison.

There are not only monsters behind the bars. The head of the guard and the director are undoubtedly among the monsters in front of the cells. The director definitely wouldn't have let Andy live. Shortly before the pension he had his uniformed executioner kill him. Andy the only witness to the machinations dead, no other witnesses, a perfect transition into retirement. He would certainly have been praised in the press and elsewhere for the “great” ideas he had. A masterpiece!!

Either your mum is a very perceptive woman or shes just like mine, a bloody fibber! 😂 I watched films with my mum as a kid into my early 20’s and I never caught on until watching misery. In the book Annie cuts off his feet not hobbling him as she does in the film, but about 10 minutes before she does it my mum was talking about cutting of his feet with an axe or something if she catches him getting out the room. It was so random and out the blue it stuck in my brain. I’ve never been a reader but I purposely bought a copy and read it to find out. Then all those times over the years she was slightly wrong it was because they changed the story for some reason. I was livid when I found out for about 10 minutes then I blamed myself for not realising earlier. I would occasionally reminder over the next 10 years but it brought the pair of us into fits of laughter many time! Miss You Mum!
