It's finally here! The next chapter in the saga of my attempt to make an 1840s ball gown to go to the Prior Attire Ball in Bath. (I went April 2023. Yes it took me this long to edit this video.)
After a last minute change of plan in the mock up stage I had to rework my design and my pattern pieces to create the iconic 1840s decoration, a Bertha.
Many of the knitted items you see me wearing have patterns available in my Ko-fi shop: ko-fi.com/retroclaude/shop

This has been my most anticipated release of 2024 and it have surpassed my expectations 🎉. The fabric is beautiful, the dress looks wonderful, your skill is make my foggy brain spin and it had just the right amount of emotional roller-coaster to keep you glued to the screen (Im not sure if this was planned 😅) . Thank you for making the end of a really hard week so much brighter 😊 I now get to spend the weekend enjoying watching all of the videos for this dress together. Oh and a sequel is genius i had not seen that coming 😂🎉

I feel both better and worse about my chaotic workspace… better, because I’m not alone in messy crafting, but worse because my space makes yours look organized!! 🤣 As a fellow EDS spoonie, I also have thumbs that just stop functioning…and fingers… I actually now wear 15 silver splints to stabilize the joints. Sometimes they get in the way, but being able to use my good fabric shears is a major bonus. A massive thank you for recommending the spring loaded shears (ages ago). I got some, and they are sooooo helpful!! Your dress is beautiful!!! 🤩 Absolutely stunning, and I love the addition of the bertha. 😙👌🏻Thank you for sharing your process of making it.

This reminds me of this book i read as a kid, many many times. Its called dragon slippers, and the heroine is a dressmaker and embroiderer. She ends up with a dress made of gold silk, and covers it in embroidery just in time for a ball. This looks jist as magical as i imagined that one, even if they're completely different ❤

Relating hard to the rotary cutter talk. I nearly cut myself twice on one recently, whilst it was supposedly "closed" and stored away. Well done me 😆. I'm also prone to flipping stuff around (worst example recently was a tapas dish, all over the floor 🤦🏻‍♀️) Now I have an uneven number - argh!

Steel boning caps solution is TWO sets of needle nose pliers! You can use one set to hold the cap in place (instead of using your fingers), and the other set to clamp it shut. So lovely to see the making progress after seeing the finished look at the ball last year! I still haven't braved making my Bertha... 😂

Your piping is absolutley beautiful. ive made an 1830's brown silk gown aand it is covered everywhere with decorative bias strips and then piping on top - as well as piping all the seams. i used very fine string, to give very petite piping that went aruond aall the tight curves of the various places I wanted it on. it is a very effective and cheap decorative method and shows good workmanship. Just gives that authentic feel to the garment.

What a perfectly beautiful gown! Berthas are spectacular, but wow, that’s an insane amount of work! But it absolutely MAKES the gown! And your lovely knitted trim! So many lovely details and you are one of the few women on earth who can carry off that hairstyle! Thank you for sharing your amazing project! ( including photos of your work table! I thought it was just me who worked in that type of chaos! lol!)

I have to say as someone who is not very good at sewing, I was really fascinated by your forward thinking for having an easier time making alterations in the future. the seam allowances, the order in which you did things to make unpicking easier, knowing what stitches to use and so on... not that I think I'll be applying this to anything I make but I really enjoyed it! just another aspect of sustainable, slow fashion - making it something you could wear for years to come, even if your body changes. so cool!

You looked so beautiful in this dress! It fits wonderfully and this colour suits you so well. I'm so glad we're able to see it in it's full glory after all the hard work you put in it. I hope we can see more of the videos that you filmed last year, of course if you have the strength to edit them. And about the deadstock fabric - I almost always buy deadstock, because let's be honest, I can't afford real wool or linen fabric in regular prices, they're quite expensive here, but I'm always so scared that something will be messed up. And if I would seen it on silk I would literally cry for few hours.

this video was worth the wait! there was lots of really good sewing tips and I found myself paying close attention which for a long video is unusual for me! (or hold off from my knitting and look at the screen for an extended period of time!) you looked beautiful in the bertha design! I also enjoyed seeing your knitwear throughout the video such as the blue lacy one and also that green cardigan at the end is a beauty!

It looks absolutely stunning from the splash pic. Perfectly timed for me to watch while making my own 1840s gown! Beautiful dress 🥰 Edited to add: I use two pairs of pliers at the same time to put the boning caps on. It's very awkward, but does mean that when you press the sides in the top and bottom don't manawto reshape themselves!

You looked beautiful at the ball. I saw you at the end with Retro Claude but as you looked a little tired I didn't want to disturb. I'd had a nice chat with her earlier. I know that pocket feeling! Yup, me too 😂 its been lovely to see the making of this. I did my Bertha all the way round as a separate piece and tacked it to the dress cos I wanted it to hang off the shoulder a bit more and couldn't work out how else to do it. Currently working on my bodice for this year. I do hope that you are feeling a bit better with the rest you are having to take. Today we're getting sunshine here in North Wales - I hope its shining onyou too further south 😎

OMG I am currently dealing with my left thumb refusing to grip anything. It's put a full stop to all my crocheting and sewing. I have chronic myalgia due to FMF and also lifelong recurrent branch median nerve issues in the left hand, so it's happened before, but it's SO ANNOYING. A splint or brace that immobilizes the thumb helps me. I wear it as much as I can without making my wrist sore for a few days or weeks and that rest seems to help a lot. Glad I have some Retro Claude to keep me company while I glare at my half-finished scarf.

Hello, not sure if this has been suggested, but I use electric tape to finish bones, if that helps. Sometimes a bit pokey, but if you cut it better than I do (so that its the curvy bit and not the 2 prongs at each side) it should work. Hope that made sense. Also, where do you get your fabric and notions in the UK? Well done on your dress also - absolutely stunning!
