I've watched so many 4 c hair channels and I feel like you're the only one I can relate to when it comes to my hair. It breaks sometimes when taking out braids even when moisturised. It grows longer in the back and gives issues in the middle and I swear I part my hair in five all the time.
@jenniesmythe8188
@jenniesmythe8188 3 года назад
Maybe try washing you hair in one lump in the shower. Bc sometimes parting in fours can pull. You said five isn't working. Maybe your middle is just more prone to breakage. Try more leave in conditioner. Try changing your routine. How and when you use oil.

Hi to avoid breakage on the edges with braids I make sure to have much more of my own hair than the extension in this area so it's not too heavy. For the rest of my head I make sure to have at least equal part so my hair won't fall out. I don't braid tight ever. And I redo the edges every 3 weeks so when it's time to remove it there is no dirt and it does not break. My crown used to break all the time as well (I have much more density, my hair is kinkier and I have more shrinkage in this area) with my four parts. So I changed to 5... Did not work either... To change that I did what is mentioned in the comment. Add more parts just for the middle. Since I started divided the middle in 3 parts my crown finally grew because there is now way less tension. Also I never used a brush especially not in this area which is prown to breakage just my fingers or a wide tooth comb in small sections and NEVER when my hair is dry.

Yunno, I’ve always felt like when hairstylist tell us to blow dry our hair before braids, that it would make breakage when you take braids out. Hair is like noodles, when it’s dry it breaks, when it’s moist it’s malleable. so just imagine having blow dryed hair and having your strands confined in braids with no moisture for like two months. Each bun, ponytail, hairstyle that you do with those braids in, will cause breakage to the hair strands bc the dryness is too much for manipulation. I had to get this off my chest haha 💀

Not true when my hairstylist would braid my hair she always applied a moisturizing leave in and braid gel. So it depends where you go yes I had to come with my hair wash and blow dried but if it wasn’t dry enough her assistant would blow it out some more. But would always apply moisturizing products as she braided my hair.

Anyway, I let her put them in and take them out and it was a close call, I think because she only did the wrap-around on the perimeter of my head and crocheted the middle of my head, that helped. It's a fine line we walk with protective styles. Great tips!

When I remove my braid extensions, I prepoo overnight with coconut oil and next day use cheap conditioner and more oil to remove and detangle my hair I’ve never really lost hair wearing braid extensions I also wash my hair every couple weeks or every week in a half while wearing extensions and condition it Gotta keep your hair moisturized while in extensions

Looking this up because it just happened to me. I’m literally sitting in the bathroom with conditioner. So much of my hair left the chat but The Most High God is a restorer. Not to mention I cut one of my braids cutting the locs out.

The first time I did a braid takedown it was horrible, but I picked up a technique where I take out the braid, to lubricate my hair with oil to separate strands easily, follow with a little bit of conditioner/hydrating cream, and then use a detangling brush, and rebraid, one by one and repeat. There's very little breakage with this method (take it from someone with literally two hair textures--texturized ends and natural roots) I wash my hair in the new braids. Then I dry my hair, take down the braids, detangle, moisture/seal and decide what style to go with--most likely just braids again 😂.

I feel like this is a safe space so, what do we think about applying hyaluronic acid to our scalp while we have braids in? It sounds a lil crazy but I can't think of any negative side effects

This was super helpful. I have in faux locs as well and I plan to keep it in for a month or a little longer. I always worried about the amount of hair I would loose. This way seems way safer.❤❤👍🇯🇲🇯🇲🤭

I’m confused by the comments that say only flew down with oil Bc most detangler products are water based or at least have a moisture element

I usually soak my hair with water to make it easier to detangle and rub the part with build-up to loosen the dirt. even though you had shedding ur hair grows super fast! I get your 1 month growth in 3 for me😭

Whenever I have crochet braids in my hair is super dry all the time because I swear the fake hair is absorbing everything. I think that any style where you can’t get to your hair directly like wrap around styles, it would be very hard to moisture the hair and I personally would never do them. Box braids are easier because you can wash your hair and put moisturizer on your hair and scalp. When I take down the braids I cut off the excess length and unravel tj extensions from my real hair dry because if my Hair gets wet it will revert and tangle. Once all the hair is out then I’ll apply a conditioner and finger detangle

Take down braids dry or with oil only, water weakens the hair and that's why you got so much breakage.

Water is a locking agent. Yes, it is actually COUNTER INTUITIVE to use it when unraveling braids. The solution is to keep the hair dry when unraveling it. Unravel with as little manipulation as possible, then use generous amounts of a SILICONE (I hear someone gasp 😱) based conditioner to detangle. Silicones give the best slip. You can wash it off with any shampoo of your choice and use your preferred conditioner when you’re done. Side note: Because of the inevitable friction that happens when installing crochet braids, they tend to result in a lot more breakage that most other protective styles. They are installed at right angles to the hair shaft, as opposed to regular braids which are installed in the direction of growth of the shafts.
