Wouldn't it be cool if Naptural85 launched a page/forum where naturalistas who are following the same method can post updated photos on their hair length/health? I think that would be awesome!

Okay! So when I first went natural I did this because I have terrible dandruff issues, and frequently co washing my hair kept it at bay, but while I did that my hair was super healthy and it was growing, so yes I think your theory will work, it worked for me and I assume it'll work for you based on the success you've already experienced!

***** Interesting theory. I have a BUNCH of single strand knots and very weird (and kind of creepy) splits/knots all over my hair, I don't know why.. I trim my hair more often and more than the amount recommended and still get them not only on the ends but the middle as well, and that really sucks when I'm trying to grow my hair out but have so many knots and heat damage to cut off constantly.
@fsanders2
@fsanders2 9 лет назад
***** It's funny that you say you are using more water. I've started to do as well however, I was doing it because my hair would get so dry from working out. It's as if the sweat takes away the oil. What up wit dat doh?? Anyways I've been using more water and oil on my hair and I've seen a big difference.
@UTFanatic15
@UTFanatic15 9 лет назад
PixieHollowLounge split ends and knots are going to happen. The key is to minimize their damage but don't get frustrated just because they're there. It's a Natura part of hair growth and is to be expected. I reduced my single strand knots when I stopped doing bantu knot outs. I do braid outs and twist outs or protective styles now and my hair is growing and retaining length faster than it ever has.

I'm in! 1yr! Every 3 days! Let's go! Lol Also yes I am a male follower. There isn't really any men on youtube for natural hair advice. Been trying to grow my hair for a few years but I never really knew what I was doing so it got so unhealthy it just basically stopped growing completely.....but I found you so it's all good! My hair is healtier than ever and actually growing pretty fast. Lol not all of the styles are unisex but I make do with the ones that can be altered. My wash-n-gos be KILLIN em! Complements left and right. Ladies love the curls I guess. Have me at work blushing. Lol I was starting to give up, but I've finally gotten to a point that I actually like my hair and I wanna thank YOU for that. I WAS thinking about starting a hair channel for guys, but I'm too lazy sooooo......lol for now I'll just watch....haha

It's crazy how we were to believe that washing our hair less would cause damage BUT in reality and with order, it really does help keep it moist + tangle-free. I notice a difference when I wash my hair twice a week and I am happy with the results. Can't wait to see your updates. Doing the same and I hope my hair also grows even faster Thank you always

I also want to let the ladies know that TRIMS are our friends as well. A few months back I was experiencing breakage. I was caught up on growth so I used to skimp on my trims. I got a trim a few months back and it literally has changed my life. Now I only experience usual shedding and no breakage. The amount of hair that comes out during washes is the size of a silver dollar instead of a ping pong ball. It only takes me 10 minutes to detangle and style and I have little to no single strand knots. I washed my hair after 2 weeks yesterday and only had 2 single strand knots. Naptural has always been about health and not length and I think thats why her hair grew so long compared to other naturals on youtube I've been following since forever that still have shoulder length natural hair. For the ladies that don't have the time to do this but want to try to grow your hair, remember being rough and impatient with your hair is far more damaging than the simple routine you may have developed that works for you.

I think your theory will work! Something I have noticed and wondered about too. When I bced I washed my hair every 3 to 4 days for the first year and not only did it grow fast but I retained every inch(6"). Then someone said to me 'oh its not good to wash your hair so often it will cause breakage' and I believed them so I washed my hair once a week. Can I tell you that my hair was dry and kept breaking and I only had an inch or two retention for a whole year! So guess what I'm back to my old regimen of washing every 4 days and I'm optimistic. I've been doing this since March so I'll see where I am by year's end. Happy growing to us😊👍

Yassss, lol. That helpful advice can kill YOUR hair. Everyone does not have the same hair, goals, or needs. I wash mine daily, so I would hear stuff like, stripping the natural oils, hygral/hydral fatigue, blah blah blah. But meanwhile, my hair thrives best that way. I only need 10-15 minutes in the shower to do my hair. My curls look their best. My hair is soft and well moisturized. I had to, once again, ignore other people's opinions and just listen to my own hair and common sense. I do oil rinses, hot oil treatments, deep condition, and protein treatments regularly to maintain a great water/oil/protein balance. My hair is never stripped or dry by washing daily. My hair breaks extremely easy if it's dry and my hair goes into cotton tangle mode overnight and does not refresh well.
@427skies
@427skies 9 лет назад
kitkatgoode My hair has been more moisturized since I've been washing every 3 or 4 days too (twice a week) and I pretty much soak my hair with my spray bottle everyday.

Well that partially explains my quick hair growth then. I normally cowash 3-4 days and I shampoo once a week. I massage my head everyday and I wet it everyday. My hair naturally grows fast but I think what you said explains something genius. :)
@CreoleKing1986
@CreoleKing1986 9 лет назад
I completely agree with this!!! The first 3 years of my hair journey I went from bald/clean shaven to mid back length hair on 3 years flat. During that time I cowashed or shampooed my hair 4-5 times a week. My hair was always getting wet and always moisturized. I feel like long "protective" styling always makes my hair break or get dry.

I'm so glad you posted this, and I'm with you! When I had my TWA right after I cut off my relaxed ends, I found myself dunking my head under the shower 2 - 3 times a week and finishing with a smear of shea butter. My hair grew like a weed. Then, for some reason, I got both lazy and overly obsessed with styles, products, etc...long story short, I was doing too much to my hair, but only doing it once every two weeks or so. Your theory definitely sounds legit; I can't wait until you post your perfected regimen! :D
@GirlsLoveYourCurls

That is so funny! I was convinced of the "wetting/washing hair" theory after watching cynthiarf - AfroCare, about a year ago. She has 4c hair and wet/cowashed her hair every 1 to 3 days. She said exactly what you did about less tangles etc. It made a lot of sense. A few months back I co-washed my hair every 2 to 3 days for two weeks, wearing mostly wash and go's and was amazed that my hair wasn't a tangled mess. I had less breakage and less tangles. The only thing I wasn't able to figure out was the drying time. It felt like I was constantly walking around with wet hair. My hair would sometimes take 2 days to dry. I know it had a lot to do with the type and amount of product I used. I decided to wait until I purchased a hood dryer before continuing with my experiment. From my experience I believe it will result in greater length retention. I'm excited to see! :) xx

GirlsLoveYourCurls I agree as well!!! I did the MaxHydrationMethod for a little over month and went from mid-back length to waist length!!!! washing every other day, total shocker....but then I had hair fatigue, tired of touching it, and tired of it being wet. now im washing every 2 weeks. im trying to get back to every week. it has to be doable to be continued...and Im the farthest thing from a stay at home mom.
@misssophisticated1698
@misssophisticated1698 9 лет назад
GirlsLoveYourCurls That is so true. Washing every 3 days you don't get hardly any tangles. I've always done wash and goes in the summer and because of the gel I washed every 2-3 days and my hair always grow faster or I retain more length.

TondrA- try getting rid of shed hair before you wash and add a pre-poo.I have found this tip extremely helpful in keeping my hair detNgled. Even on my mid-week wash I pre-poo. I just use prayer hands all over my hair to get rid of shed hairs, then I spray with water to dampen it, followed by Aussie moist conditioner all over. I usually go out and walk the dogs for twenty minutes and then come back and wash. You can just cover with a plastic cap instead. The other thing is never wash your hair like a hair commercial, don't swirl your hair all over your head, just focus on the scalp and let the water run down your hair to clean the strands. Hope this is helpful!!!

NorthernSunshine I've been thinking about cutting all my hair off next January to start fresh and do the water only method. I did it for 5 months last year, but i won a giveaway for hair products, so i stopped. As soon as i run out of products, water will be the only product i use. I'm glad this "method" ( i hate using that word because i think it makes ppl turn away, and this "method" isn't really a method) is becoming popular, so many naturals can save money and find something that really works. After 5 years of being natural, when i did the water only method, it really helped my hair out a lot
@Sunshine00816
@Sunshine00816 9 лет назад
yeah, i was watching the world of braiding ladys videos and in one, she talked about how afro textured hair does not function the way straight and wavy hair does and how kinky/curly hair loves water contrary to the information thats out there about how saturating hair with water constantly weakens our hair...that information is not geared towards all hair types. only hair types that are common among white people. water is definitely our fertilizer.
@Sunshine00816
@Sunshine00816 9 лет назад
***** personally, i think that method is quite drastic however i do like the idea of saturating your hair everyday with water. i saturate my hair in the morning and at night when i shower and i apply shea butter or a leave in conditioner. i find that wetting my hair with hot water removes all the excess butter/ product that i apply everyday and it helps to get the sebum to coat my strands. and i agree about using the term "method" i think its more of a regimen..i hope the water only method works out for you

That's so crazy! I was just thinking the same thing. It's NOT ONLY genes that make other races hair grow, it's that they replenish moisture with water almost every day. Everyone's hair needs moisture. I hate hearing black people say, "Uh unn girl/boy don't be getting my hair wet." Now I'm like, why not?! Watch what it does for your hair. I'm a dude. So I don't mind getting my hair wet all the time. My hair grows one inch per month. Now that I watch all these hair videos on RU-vid my hair grows a little bit less. I'm going back to wetting it every day. Hope this helps someone else. Especially you naturals. Get your hair wet. Apply your favorite leave in every day and I bet your hair will grow MUCH faster!

Hey! I loved your video and I think you have a good theory with the constant moisturizing and scalp massaging. I've been natural my entire life, but while I haven't had the typical hair journey of transitioning and big chopping etc. I have had a journey of learning how to take care of my hair and I have also gone through phases of having waist length hair to shorter hair to waist length hair again. For me personally I have learned that moisture and massaging of the scalp is indeed a key to hair growth. However, when I tried washing my hair any more frequently than once every two weeks my hair could never retain its length (I'm assuming I have fragile strands). I grew my hair from shoulder length to about two inches above my waist in 7 months just by retaining moisture and using styles that allowed me to not mess with my hair for long periods of time (I'm talking like 3 weeks but never more than that only because I get tired of looking the same lol). I also make all of my hair products and eat a fairly good diet so that played a role in my growth as well. I'm sorry this is so long haha I just wanted to share my experience! I wish you the best on your hair journey!

I like your ideas on how to grow your hair out. I am not so sure that straighter hair grows faster. I have always read that all hair grows at about the same rate give or take for a few factors. But the difference is in whether we can retain the length or not. Curly girls struggle to retain length because of all the things you mentioned. So it seems like our hair is growing slower when we just need to find out how to keep what we get. I wish I knew. Kinkier textures can be very strong and resilient. And they can grow long! I too wash every 3 days because of tangles and dryness. I love it. I hope it works for you and I think you will be successful in your journey.

Actually no.... because you still have to moisturize your hair (not scalp). I used Jamaican black castor oil. I'm pretty sure you can use your oil of choice.

The point of wow is to not use so many products that will cause buildup and that eat away at your hair's natural ph balance. If you wash your hair with a product with olive oil and follow it up with olive oil... your scalp isn't able to breath . However, with wow it will be able to respond to that 1! product you choose to use . Grandma used to say there is such thing as too much of a good thang!

One of my friends who helped convince me to go natural used to say: Your hair is like a plant. It needs water to grow! So I think there's some merit to your theory. Even if it doesn't stimulate faster growth, it will definitely allow you to keep more of your hair as it does grow, without breakage/split ends/etc.

Im so glad that you have came out with this video this is my third confirmation...i have 4c hair and could never figure out how to keep my hair moisturized and maintain my legnth so i decided to start co washing my hair every 1-3 days depending on how my hair feels. I have to say that my hair is maintaining moisture. A few days ago i was reading some type of post from tia mowry and she was told by her famous hair stylist kim kimble that if she co washed her hair every day or every other day it will stimulate hair growth...another hair stylist that i came accorss on you tube advised of the same process now you... i know this is confirmation that this method will truly work im on the same mission as you i am a new natural and im glad that i am now getting on the right track with my 4c hair i now longer hav to be embarrassed with my dry short 4c hair....happy growing and i hope the other naturals try it out as well ☺

I don't know about cowashing every 3 days. I'm curious to see how this works out. When you were 1st on your hair journey you used natural products made your own protein treatments and deep conditioners. Hey guys, you don't always have yo cut off your single strand knots. I've bn natural all my life, but i only stopped putting heat to my hair last yr and after 7 months i had single strand knots everywhere. They do not go away! Even after i trimmed an inch off they were still there. As it turns out, single strand knots just come with the territory. As long as u trim when ur hair really needs it, u shouldn't worry about single strand knots. It'll only drive u nuts lolz. Only rinses and more stretched styles prevent them tho. I hope this helps

All hair pretty much grows at the same rate. The issue is length retention. I've started following the same wash and go routine as cynthiarf - AfroCare and ***** . It's also pretty much how they did my hair when I went hairrules . My twist outs and braid outs just become a big mess when it's humid out. Also the every 2 to 3 day co-wash where I remove the trapped hair has REALLY reduced tangles. My biggest hurdle to overcome was accepting my high shrinkage hair. I was so busy trying to twist and braid out so I could show more length but I'm over it now. I like having a fast routine and the way my curls are popping shows me that my hair has to be loving this too.

You are a great example of why i continue to do these vids! Slowly but surely as we accept our hair, our maintenance choices change & so does our hair. I hope you try my Hair Weightz (naturally stretches your natural texture) & Detangling Glaze (all natural silky detangler that also hydrates, defines & sets definition). Camille Acey So happy you are enjoying my products. Looking forward to your review! Using the Hair Weightz takes a bit of trial and error sometimes. As long as you have at least 4 inches or so you can use them 1) to attach & gage the correct amount of hair, twist section (not too tight) where you want to attach. The width of hair should pass thru the space between easily 2) hair should be fully wet or well coated with Glaze & attached towards ends of hair to maximize stretch If you have anymore questions let me know

My hair actually grows faster when I wash it more often I think this theory would work , people with straight hair wash they're hair more often to get rid of the oils that get threw they trends faster then our natural oils can get threw out curls but I also think they're hair probably produces oils faster than us and grows more then ours because they are tricking they're hair /scalp if you wash your hair more often it'll trick your hair into thinking it needs more moisture so those natural oils will come threw more frequently , if you don't wash your hair often and put many oils into your hair and let oils and dirt build up tells your hair you don't need extra oils , and clogs the hair folicles so we think putting more and more and more products and moisture is the way tho go , idk that's it's my theory lml I'm not a professional or anything ,

I'm definitely going to try it and yes it does make a lot of sense! Water is the number one source of moisture and we so often try to stay away from it to maintain our hairstyles, to avoid the time consuming routine of washing, and also due to the misconception that washing our hair often will only strip our hair of its natural oils. Though washing everyday may due that, co-washing or doing a water rinse every three days as you stated definitely would not dry our hair. So I'm excited to try this regimen and I am confident that this will totally help with hair maintenance, growth, and length retention.

I've made a really bad mistake with my hair too recently (about a month ago while re-doing mini two-strand twists, I accidentally cut half a whole twist off [8 inches!] while trying to cut out a single strand knot), so in an effort to work through my devastation, I had to convince myself I could even it all out again eventually while still letting my hair grow. I think it's possible in about a year and a half, as I use the seek and destroy method with split ends and knots and end up trimming a lot of length off of longer strands routinely anyway. Whitney, you've just saved my spirit though, because it's comforting to see such a famously beautiful natural cut her long length and live to smile about it! Love you girl!

I've been relaxer-free since October 2013, completely heat-free since July 2014 and have ONLY used the organic DIY products in your videos since October 2014. I didn't do the BC but gradually cut out the relaxed ends over a three month period from August-October 2014. Going natural has definitely been an adventure. I still struggle with being comfortable with my hair moisture level but I think I'm starting to understand that natural hair won't "feel" like processed hair when it is moist. Yes I do it with all natural black soap the one in the tub. I use it very mildy. Becareful because it does burn ya eyes. The Shea moisture black soap shampoo doesn't burn ya eye. Also alikay naturals has a black soap shampoo.
@1centplus1cent
@1centplus1cent 9 лет назад
Jasmine Applehead I would suggest doing test patches of hair over a period of time BEFORE using soap. Soap, especially bar soap, is alkaline with a pH anywhere between 8 and 10. Our skin has a low pH which is why soap works well. Any pH over 7 starts to lift up your hair cuticles thus making it hard to retain moisture while exposing the sheath and shaft. If your cuticles remain in a lifted state then you lose them, essentially thinning your strands and damaging them. I used soap for a period of time, ~6 months or so, and my scalp felt clean but my hair over time became VERY dry and brittle. I never even thought to test the pH because others were swearing by it. Because of this, I had a major setback. It's like removing the shingles from a roof and leaving it exposed to the elements.
@1centplus1cent
@1centplus1cent 9 лет назад
***** When I first heard of Black soap being wonderful for skin I purchased like 40 bars of Dudu O Sun and I didn't like it. Maybe it was my batch but it made my skin dry, white and ash like. Do you experience that and did it help to even your skin tone on your knees and elbows? If so, I may try it again just for my elbows. Oh no about it possibly making your hair a little more relaxed. That could be due to the fact that it is causing it to expand, stretch constantly with that higher than average pH. I'm of the frame of mind that since our scalp is covered with such a high number of hair follicles and that hair basically does not have a pH that the environment it grows in is really the ultimate determining factor. So, since our scalp has a low pH then it would make sense to foster that pH since it has a highly dense number of hair follicles. I think the low pH, between 4.5 - 5.5, causes less stress to our scalp because it is not constantly trying to adjust and reach its balance. Maybe that is why your scalp became irritated too because it was too much alkalinity in a place that is naturally acidic. If you imagine your hair like a tree branch with bark on it then every time you put the soap on it, you are causing the bark(cuticles) to pull away from the tree, stress and wear and tear will take place. When you put conditioner on it, or even something like ACV or Aloe juice then you cause the bark to adhere back to the tree and possibly too tight. So, it is a dance of extremes; in one instance you are pulling the bark away and the other you are causing it to squeeze too tight. Where is the happy median? Aloe juice, at least the stuff I tested has a pH of ~3 or so. I know tons of people use it but it is almost the same acidity as lemon juice. Add it to something alkaline in an attempt to lower the pH may work but it's impossible to lower the pH of soap and still have it remain as soap. I tried many times with liquid soap and it always, ALWAYS, falls out of solution.

***** And I love your intellect as well! You were smarter than I was because you knew to follow up the soap with a conditioner. LOL Dawn, I know you are in no rush to enter into this new decade of your life, :-) but allow me to welcome you early. Welcome to the 40's they're the new mid 20's I guess since 50 is the new 30. :-) I'm about to be 42 and I know exactly where you are coming from. Being on ones knees a lot seems to be the running accusation when it comes to explaining the discoloration. LOL I am going to purchase a bar and see if it works with my elbows. I rest them on things too much. And I hope all works out well with your scalp. It's nice to be able to share and help one another out when we can. Thanks for sharing your account of using the soap.

I am totally with you on this plan! I big chopped a second time this March after 3 years of being natural. I love my short cut, it's edgy and fun but I MISS my long hair, and I definitely miss my bun. Since my hair has been short, I have been doing mostly wash 'n go's because it's fast and easy but I diffuse it too which I know is probably hindering my growth process. In general, I wash my hair every 2-3 days and I've noticed that it does grow considerably faster. I plan to not use heat as often and will make time to twist out instead of wash n go's. Also, I've noticed the importance of pre-pooing w/ oil to help combat the dryness from frequent washing. Thanks for posting! Looking forward to your updated routine! ;)

Natural Rhoday Whaaaaaat??? I don't think that is correct because she used low heat when she flat ironed it and her hair didn't change after that. I'm not saying this won't work because it probably will (a lot of the ladies here & some men are vouching for it) but I don't think "afro hair methods" should be discredited. I think we're so quick to compare our hair to "straight" hair types and their length that we don't focus on what's right in front of our faces. Women and men alike with dreads (the ultimate form of natural hair IMO because it doesn't matter the hair type, if it isn't touched it naturally locs up, although longer for some types than others) have beautiful LONGGG hair. If compared to the lengths of many with long hair straight or curly, it greatly exceeds theirs. Some people may have only seen dreads up to BSL but I've seen them on the floor with someone standing on a chair and it's still laying on the floor it's so long and I ain't talking about no faux locs! (No shade). All I'm saying is hair grows how it grows and things can be done to alter that, naturals are always finding a new way but let's not forget that dreads are in fact the LOWEST manipulation style and when they're so shockingly long the wearers tend to wash them less frequently. Lowest manipulation, less washing, longest hair-get what I'm saying? I hope it works for you and everyone who's giving it a try because heck I might try it but I won't look to someone with different hair than I have to try and achieve what they have when it's proven to be achievable by people with hair more similar to mine with methods that may not lead to moisture overload or wet clothes every day! So the low manipulation/less washing to keep my NATURAL oils might continue to be the method for me. Lol! Good luck girl/s!

I've never thought about that. It makes sense and I'm up for the challenge!

I am so glad you shared this! I am in my third week of water only washing! This is when you allow your natural oils (sebum) to produce in the scalp and pull the oil down the length of your hair during the wash! Scritching massaging and preening are apart of this method!

I've missed so many of your updates. I was beginning to think this might be an old video that you forgot to upload. I miss your super-duper-luscious curls. *sigh* I'm gonna try this also. Since it's summer I won't have to worry bout my hair taking years to dry. Happy Growing y'all!
