I have to take a moment here Liz and thank you so much for setting up the “go fund me” for your neighbours that had the tragic fire and lost all their possessions. This is a very valuable post, Liz, WOW, very scary! I still remember RU-vidr Andrew Steele whose RV caught fire and was a total loss. Andrew, his girlfriend and dog barely got out in time. As a result of that I bought additional fire extinguishers and placed them throughout our coach. Most coaches these days come with a single extinguisher, but it is nowhere near enough! And a fire suppression system is an excellent idea. In my opinion they should be standard equipment in every RV!
@LizAmazing

Thanks Wes. Yes, I saw that video when Andrew's motorcoach caught fire. So scary! I will definitely be looking into fire suppression. Stay tuned, and thanks for watching.

Hi, Liz; Unfortunately Alfas catch on fire more than most. Our friend Frank lost his to one. Be sure that you have a working battery disconnect switch, and know where it's located. What usually feeds the fire is the house batteries. No matter how many extinguishers you use, or how much water you spray, those batteries will keep feeding energy to the fire, so shut them down, and immediately turn off 120 power to the rv. Hope this was somewhat helpful. Safe travels. Michael and William.
@LizAmazing
@LizAmazing Год назад
This is so good to know. Thanks for this. I've heard the original surge protector, the 240V transfer switch, the power wheel, and now the house batteries are suspect. So much to think about. Thanks Michael and William. Happy travels.

@@LizAmazing Faulty components are hard to prevent... no telling what the actual cause of the fire was. I do hope the investigators have the ability to take time to determine what was the specific problem. If a faulty component is involved, it might give legal grounds for recourse for Mark and Kim, even if their insurance isn't as helpful. As a former nuclear submariner, a fire is our worst fear... a lot of effort to prevent fire. One tip I picked up, that I use for the RV, is a relatively inexpensive FLIR thermal imager ($850). Mine happens to double as an amp meter. One look at circuits in use, and you can immediately tell if a loose or corroded connection is causing a problem. The more resistance = more heat...that the FLIR image picks up right away. Just might prevent a fire. Sure helps electrical troubleshooting too. Maybe I can demo for you when I catch up to you on the west coast after repairs are complete?

Liz, IIWY, I'd have my on board 240V transfer switch checked. I've seen several of your rig's age with burnt wires & melted stuff inside. New one is maybe $165 plus labor to install. That's the thing that "pops" when you plug in & "pops" when you unplug or it unplug. Likely that's the pop your friends heard

Thank you very much for posting this and setting up the gofundme for them. I add that in addition it is important to have an escape plan and to practice. My motorhome only has one door in the front, and a fire can trap a person in the back. To prepare and practice, I tried to get out of my escape window and could not without going out face first and that is not good. I came up with a plan and added a collapsible ladder as well as a piece of pvc pipe to hold the window open and have a board to place between the bed and window to allow me to go out feet first with belly down and be able to use the ladder. I intend to make a video about this. As you mentioned, one does not have much time to get out once a fire starts.

I am so sorry to hear about this tragedy. I know we never used a surge protector until we went to a rally maybe four years ago and learned about them. We travel for over 30 years and never knew of this so happy that we were able to get one and could sleep better. You talked about knowing the address of where you are camping in case you need emergency help I’ve often wondered why no one ever let us know what county we were in at that same campground. There’s so many tornadoes and hurricanes etc. etc. and I think everyone should know when they check in what county they are in. We never knew any of this information, we are no longer on the road and I do worry about all the people out there that are traveling and not knowing about this information. Thank you for all you do in helping people learn about safety.😘

Great point, Claudia, yes the county information is important when using a weather radio. I just google when I am setting up to find the county. And I recently learned that a surge protector has a lifespan of just 3-5 years. So glad you had many adventures in your 30 years. Thanks for watching.

Hi Liz. You can also add to the list to make sure that the power cable is fully unwound. Because if you (in hot climates have your Aircon on) use anything electrical and your cable is wound up it can get hot/ catch fire. In 2010 we were on our way back to Tampa for our winter stay, we were driving down Interstate 75 around 3 in the afternoon when the traffic started to back up. I made the decision to get off the highway for the night. We were 60 miles from our campground. We found a nice campground for the night and took our time getting to our site the next day. When we arrived, the Motorhome in the site next to us had caught fire and was still smoldering. (No injuries, the people got out safely). It melted the sides of several RV nearby. If we had continued on our way the day before our RV would have been toast. Our guardian angel was looking out for us.

Not sure how I missed this video when it came out. Three decades boater here and my boats were usually older but they all had halon fire suppression systems in the engine rooms. I am on my second self converted rig and I was shocked when I found out factory RV's used regular household style Romex for electrical wires. In the boating world all electrical wiring is stranded cables. They reason boats used stranded because it was believed that solid copper Romex would break due to flexing. Kind of like taking a paper clip and bending it back and forth. Boats use the stranded type of electrical wire due to vibrations. I have been out in some real nasty stuff on the big pond and I never thought there was much for vibration. Some of the smaller boats I had (26 foot or so) would certainly get vibration when trailering. Stranded cable is certainly more expensive and maybe RV fires are not caused by Romex breaking. I think the best prevention is to go around and check all wire connections, 12 volt and 120 volt, that you can reach. Unplug from shore power first and DON'T forget to turn off your inverter. Loose connections cause arching. Pay close attention to shore power cord ends and look for any black or arching. They sell replacement ends for a reason. Anyway that is my 2 cents worth.

Good Evening Ms. Amazing, and thank you for your informative videos. As an engineer who has designed equipment with surge suppressors, I have always concerned myself with the idea that in the case of a significant surge event, the surge suppressor is not guaranteed or even highly likely to survive. Most commercial surge suppressors work by having comparatively small components short the excess voltage, while they must for a very short time absorb extremely high levels of power which they turn into heat. The idea is the event is fast enough that the total energy/heat doesn't damage the suppressor components for brief surges. If it fails while giving its life to tamp down the voltage surge, there will likely be sparks inside the suppressor case. Part of good design is to make sure the suppressor is able to contain the event long enough for the upstream breaker to blow, while not setting nearby external flammable materials on fire. Even a 30 or 50 amp breaker can pass several hundred amps or more briefly in a fault condition before it can trip. I will not be placing a surge suppressor inside an RV or boat unless I have built a containment structure superior to the small molded plastic case most surge suppressors use to carry the surge suppressor circuit board. I recommend putting up with the extra work of manually attaching the suppressor at the outside power source. Have a great evening and thanks again for all your information! PP

That's a good tip, Pete. Unfortunately I was physically unable to unplug my surge protector each time. (See my video tour where I demonstrate the problem towards the end: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9O4khf-7_Rk.html ) There's a port the plug must pass through to get back into the compartment so I had to unplug it. I did try the dielectric grease with no success. Now that the cord is cut and the surge protector is in the bay, what do you suggest to make that safer? Thanks!

@@LizAmazing Hi Ms. Amazing - I looked at that link, and totally get it. That looks like a standard four wire 50 amp split phase (240/120) plug, and those are hard even for me (full size guy) to unplug. It is easy to quickly come up with an untested wrong solution, but I an now thinking this is an important issue for boats and RVs. An electrical code compliant grounded metal breaker box between the surge suppressor (also inside that metal box) and the shore power connection is probably the correct solution. It is NOT a good idea to have a possible shorting device such as the surge suppressor connected directly to the campground outlet where we end up relying on THEIR breaker as the only current limiting device. The surge suppressor does not limit current, it shorts excessive voltage to block it from the RV; in a fault condition, suppressor current can be largely undefined. If a surge suppressor protects an appliance such as a TV or microwave without itself causing a fire, it does not need to survive to have done its job. I will give this some thought. Have a great weekend! PP

Sorry to hear this I am glad they are ok. We are full time as well in a 40FT Tiffin and pull a 24Ft trailer. We have multiple insurance policies, go bags at the ready for us and our pet, a fire suppression system in our rig. We have fire extinguishers in the bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, entry door, and two in the basement (passenger and drivers side). When we were flat towing we also kept a fire extinguisher in there as well, now we keep it in our trailer. Also, we have additional fire alarms with co2 detection and water leak detection alarms in the basement of our rig. We do have a fireproof safe onboard, and important documents are sealed in a fireproof holder within the safe. Copies of the documents and photos of personal items are on our phones and copies in our go bag. Note: when taking photos of your personal items include yourself in the photo or video so they can see it is you with your items. We use two bulldog surge protectors (one for the rig, the other for the trailer), that alert us on our phone if there is a problem. Maintenance, frequent inspections, insurance policy review and keeping calm are very important in this lifestyle. Stay safe!

Hi Liz, just saw this video. I'm a Paramedic and previously a Volunteer Fire FIrefighter. NO ONE HAS 1-2 MINUTES TO GET OUT!!!!!! 20 SECONDS MAYBE! Not trying to scare anybody, but all should know. There is not going to be time to get anything most likely. Of course each situation/camper/ fire is different, but please all err on the side of caution. The go bags are a MUST. We have one in each vehicle, I hide one credit card in each vehicle as well, and some cash, just in case. Extra extinguishers are in each vehicle. Very kind of you to set up the go-fund-me for them. Stay safe!!!

One thing I'd like to add... Sometimes fires can be caused by less than good electrical connections. Like where the shore power plugs into the camper. A poor connection can heat up, sometimes to the point of igniting the surrounding material. I would plug it in and wait a while and then go feel the connector. If it feels warm, that may be okay, then you can wait, say an hour and feel it again. If it ever get so hot that you can't touch it, call the manager over and tell him. By the way the poor connection might be in the shore power service cord/connector rather than in you're RV.

Thanks for mentioning fire suppression. There are several, fairly inexpensive, systems. The Flamebuster Ball works well and, literally, explodes within a second or two (with an inert powder) when the heat in the compartment rises.. Put them around your propane tanks, too. I suggest you keep your surge protector in your electrical compartment (I think you do). It will sacrifice itself and cut the power to your RV (it may not detect a problem if mounted on the pedestal).

Look up the value and properly torque each and every wire connection in the coach! Yes, every plug outlet, fuse box, junction box, transfer switch, etc. Think about all the areas in your coach where you thought "who was the idiot on the assembly line that did that!" Do you trust the crew that assembled your electrical system? I bought my coach new and in the first month went through it. On the A/C circuit breaker panel alone I could tighten most of the fittings at least 3/4 to a full turn! Also look for browning or brittle insulation that is a reflection of heating. Loose fittings cause fires! Hope this helps someone. Thanks Liz for all you do for the community!

I had this Thought, I am not sure what started the fire but where you explained the location and the sound it does sound electrical. Which got me to think about the power cord which could be the weak link. 2005 till now 18 years of use, flexing, stretching could over time break down both wires and insulation. There is and insulation test for insulated conductors. The other part to this is the electrical connections all over the RV some 120vac and 12 dc. that can and do loosen. We have a 2003 class A motorhome. It took me a few hours to go through the whole RV to verify the connection. I did find some, well worth doing.

Liz contacting the Manufacturer as well as a certified RV electrician might be prudent. Apparently RVs catch on fire frequently as do homes of course. Get the best insurance you can afford as well as all the monitors that detect smoke and lethal gases. I'm only speculating but I think some of the causes of electrical fires in RVs is the over the road potholes, rough pavement etc. Electrical connections loosen, break and tear. I would be concerned about the electrical grid at any campground. As someone said, don't be paranoid, just be aware.
