SO sorry..... Tomorrow will be the start of the 7th week in the shop this time... going on 14 weeks in the shop now... They really don't know what is happening. This time they gave it another update and the commercial service manager go out and starts it every 2 days... NO driving or letting it warm up, get hot or bounce around like normal driving... Was told that they think a failed automatic radio update is the cause and it keeps the modules awake.. . I asked if the awake modules could take both batteries down to 3 volts in under three hours and IF so why was the computer not monitoring the batteries and stopping it when the voltage went too low to start the truck? " Good Question" was the answer.
I sold my 2011 when I bought this one... Out of my 2001, 2004, 2005, 2007 , 2011 and 2020 the 2001 was best of all.... Well the injectors being under the valve covers were not the best idea :)
I have a 2020 GMC 2500 Duramax. I'm just now replacing both batteries at 80k mi. I had it hooked up to a battery tender after a trip pulling the camper and in about 3 days the batteries were down to 3.5 volts each. The original batteries are testing fine outside the truck after I got them charged so I'm wondering if I have some sort of parasitic draw and curious if it's tied to towing somehow.
lastly... a quickly discharged battery is NOT BAD.. its just DISCHARGED and needs to be RECHARGED with a BATTERY Charger.. recharging them by the alternator can damage them as the alternator puts out too much current..
It sucks you have to put up with this, for the money spent, no one should. I love my GMC truck. I don't want the first year of any model change. I bought my 2019 2500hd 6.0 because the 2020's were coming out, got a great deal, and because this model was tried, tested, and true. Whatever problems 2020's and 2021's have will be gone for the next 3 years then start all over again. They know most consumers have short attention spans. Now before you run off and buy the competition, GM/Chev don't have death wobbles, don't depreciate as fast, and well, there's a reason GMC and Chev own the tow truck market. Hope your troubles are fixed soon. Thanks for the video.
Same problem for me. Randomly going dead. Could be good for days or even months but can’t solve. GMC kept my truck for a week twice and can’t find fault. I installed a battery maintainer and plug it in if I leave it more than a day
Lonestar Chevy worked on the Rock 1 for 6 weeks... Said they did lots of updates and that sort of thing... I think it had to be something to do with the glow plugs because that was the only thing that could draw that much power to suck down 2 large batteries in 45 minutes... After they could not fix two other things,,, Shaking heads up display and having to change the whole brake system out in under 31000 miles They offered me a deal on Rock 2.. The dealer treated me right and Rock two was just traded in last month with 140000 miles and not a single trip to the dealer.... Now driving Rock 3 for the last month and it has 5100 miles on it... So far so good...
Thanks for the video. More people need to do things like this video, it helps the public make some important decisions. I have a 2020 2500 hd gmc but the dealer 5 miles from me can't even put in the correct weigh oil!! That's no joke. Man was I furious. I will drive 30 miles to another dealership before I ever Return to Mark Wahlberg here in Columbus Ohio.
If the batteries have been replaced and it killed another set for sure an electrical problem with the trucks system. Been doing it since new likely a problem in the harness somewhere. On a new truck it will be a nightmare to find. Probably take their best tech 3 days assuming they have a good one. I would push for another truck as it will take awhile to get this one sorted. A lot of new vehicles will kill the batteries if they sit 2 weeks or more because of the gps and on call features talking all the time. We put master disconnects on the big farm machinery so the GPS stuff won't run the batteries down when they sit a couple of weeks.
This is such a sudden failure that it should be easy to find... I mean in two hours it went from perfectly normal to 3 volts and nothing reacting in any way... totally dead. Of course all I can go by is what I see and hear. The engine started immediately , no starter drag just two hours earlier.... The gauge showed normal charging and there is no indications of low voltage.. Also where is the safety that stops the drain???? On my 1500 2017 year model heck even my 2011 3500 HD there is a system that shuts things down like leaving a light on or radio and the system voltage gets too low to restart the truck... This has never shown up on the 2020.. My 1500 is towed behind the motor coach and I have to leave the key turned to accessory so the wheels will unlock.. I run the engine every couple of hours to charge that battery and when I go to start it I see a message that battery saver mode was enabled... Never seen any message of any kind on the 2020, just a totally dead truck
That's the calmest rant I've ever seen. Not a General Motors fan, nuff said. Try charging both batteries and see if there is a drawdown over time. That would not show up on a computer readout, so they'll never diagnose it.
Hope they find your problem. I have a 2020 chevy Silverado that has less than 10,000 miles and has died 3 times now. The first time at the stealership they told me I have to many electric add ons and I reply what extra add ons it's stock. Insult to my intelligence.
Steve, You need another dealer. I’m a general manager of a Ford dealership. Started in the business in 1976. There is a problem that is drawing the life out of those batteries. I have a great crew, it’s not easy to find real, intelligent, diagnosticians. I wish I could help you brother.
I would love the chance to talk to You . I am having the same exact problem with the exact same truck. No one can found the problem. Truck only has 17,000 miles on it. Could you please tel me if they ever found out the issue. I know you finally traded it in on another one. But I am very curious what steps you took with gm etc. thank you and I really hope you will contact me or message me back.
2019 GMC Sierra 1500...if it sets for more then a couple of days battery is dead. Third time at the dealership right now....pretty clueless bunch....”We can’t find anything wrong”
They turned off at least the electric brake when backing up to a trailer... Who knows what else they turned off.... Turning off something is not repairing it!
Jeez, in the future I will be careful when I buy a new Chevy. My first truck is a 2004 Silverado 1500 that I did the bodywork to. Love the truck, but it costs me money now because it’s older and is 650 miles away from 200,000. Unfortunately the salt is killing the frame up here in rural New York, and it truly only has a few solid years left.☹️
I am having the same problem. 17k miles on a 6 month old truck. It has killed the battery 5 times. Called the dealer here in Austin where we bought it and they told me it would be 4 weeks before the mechanic can look at it. Soo I am still driving it. Do you have an update or a fix? Something!?
@@joshmartin2201 IT was in the shop for 7 weeks,,,, They messed with the electric brakes and took away the back up to a trailer function,,, I have 4000 miles on it since then and other than the brakes not working right and the trailer function not remembering gain its running... They lost a life long customer over this one ....
Mine had a radio with a thousand fricking lights that I do not use. I removed it and placed a regular radio that I can turn on and off and it's working fine now.
Maybe... They are waiting on a module of some kind that would not go to sleep... I'm still not sure they found the problem as 2 full size truck batteries don't go down to 3 volts in two hours...
@@10swatkins what was causing the batteries to die? I have a 2020 Silverado 2500hd with11,000 miles with the same issue. Took it to the dealership and they replaced both batteries. Didn’t find out what caused it they just said it was bad cells in both batteries.
Just a thought from my experience with diesel trucks with 2 batteries.... Have you been leaning on the AC lately in the hot weather? Especially with the truck at Idle? They often draw more amps then are generated by the alternator, get hot, possibly burn the voltage regulator and then bury the battery. A 100 amp alternator only generates a few amps at idle. I have wasted my batteries on a long trip running the AC. When I stop for fuel, the truck will not restart. Once the AC compressor has gotten too hot, it will kill the batteries every time you turn on the AC. Ask me how I know? Mis diagnosed by 5 experienced mechanics. Correctly identified by a 16 year old kid. If you get it started, check the Battery Volts. 14.5 (approx) = voltage regulator and alternator is working. anything else = regulator not working, > 14.5 = alternator working, < 14.5 = alternator not working and you are discharging the battery. Chances are... your batteries are OK - just discharged. I have had similar issues when pulling a trailer with high amperage demands as well as while running a Electric/hydraulic snow plow with over plow lights.
I will pass this along..... Nothing unusual going on with the A/C or loads.. Just normal for around here... I have never had a problem with the last 5 trucks with diesel and all of them had over 200000 when I got a new one... With the exception of injectors flooding the engine in the 2001 duramax never had much of a problem with them .... As it is under warranty with only 8000 miles on it I am not touching anything :)
I just went through problem yesterday 2020 3.0 duramax. Wife came inside house said battery died and won’t start. I jumped up my seat. And jump started it. Turned on finally. Only have 1 battery. But same issue. Check engine came on and brakes locked. Finally I cleared code’s and if it happens again it will be going in for good. I’m really pissed off wit GM myself. I’m going back to 2019 model. Let me know how it went. Because I do love there trucks. But don’t want headaches. .
I'm up to 15000 miles now last time it happened was 8800. I Am pissed at GM for trying to charge me the money to take it to what I though was a good dealer.... I'm now more pissed at the dealers service department. Tom Light Chevy in College Station Texas has a service adviser that needs to find another job because he just did not listen to me and wasted 2 more weeks of my time... I loved my sales guy and he is the only reason things ever got done, without me going to court. NO ONE has ever told me how two charged batteries went down to 3 volts each in less than three hours! This truck has been in the shop for 39 days so far .....
They changed out a lot of parts and reprogramed stuff.. They ended up making me a good deal on a 2021 so I took it... The 2021 has 60,000 miles with no problems!
Since ya said the radio comes on automatically, maybe a door trigger is bad , the truck is thinking somebody is opening the door so power goes to the system, I’ll send Gm a bill lol
@@10swatkins I wasnt tellin ya to touch it i was just tossing out a possible cause to your problem.... shame I was looking forward to owning a brand new GMC for once in my life.... that dream looks to be crushed after seeing these videos popping up , I really dont want a Tundra lol
Have read about radio not turning off after shut down (over the air update should fix), 4 bolts that hold down fuse panel not torqued to specs(53 lb.inch), truck thinks trailer is connected after disconnecting(?), glow plug modulator (?) and the latest one -behind back seat cause chafing of wire causing lin bus not shutting down (2-12-2021). Check all of these. Hopefully, it corrects the problem. I don't own one, but been researching to purchase over a year. Fingers crossed!!! Just read tons of 2021 Ford 150 having same battery drain issues.
@@10swatkins I agree, no one should have to go through that. It seems the more technology they put in, the less you get (more problems/issues). Sincerely I hope you get your truck fixed or they buy you out of it. Best of luck
Frustrating for sure being a walk-home issue. It sure would be nice if either the Detroit part of GM or your preferred dealer would both step up their game a little bit and at least get the truck into service and give you a loaner to drive. While we're wishing for stuff I'd also wish for a more handsome front end on the truck....
That front end does take some getting used to for sure :) Reminds me of an old Caddy .... The Dealer has been helpful now... Back into the same loaner truck from last month , did not have to pair the phone :( , and I was able to work yesterday. The dealer ,not chevy, sent a wrecker Tuesday morning.... Same wrecker, same driver and he had a puzzled look on his face when he saw the truck... " Didn't we just do this" he said...
I have been working on it.... Next up is leveling it so I can make 4 more riser blocks for the feet... I only had 8 from the 16 x 30 lathe and need 4 more to support each foot screw. Going to be a bit skinnier that the other 6" rounds as all I have are some 4 inch solids...
because of the computer control... especially when you mention that the radio comes on randomly.. even with the key off. there is a serious electrical issue.. its going to take an experienced tech.. with a stack of wiring diagrams.. an advanced scan tool. do you have a battery charger???? so you can get the batteries charging.
@@10swatkins perhaps the SHORT in the system is drawing more current than the battery charger can supply.. been a mechanic for 4 years.. recharge them with the cables disconnected.. do you happen to have an AC/DC amp clamp???? not all amp clamps can do DC.. www.homedepot.com/p/Klein-Tools-400-Amp-AC-DC-Digital-Clamp-Meter-Auto-Ranging-CL390/312649921 so you can clamp around the various cables to see which one is drawing current.. did you see the wiring diagrams i linked.. i know the truck is underwarranty... but disconnecting to recharge the batteries won't void the warranty.. it will take 3 or 4 hours at 10 amps to recharge each battery.. does your truck have a volt meter on the instrument cluster.. that you can glance down and look at once in a while.. since i don't expect you would be anywhere near los angeles.. i probably can't come over and diagnose it.
@@waynep343 It has electronic gauges but I have been watchin it for a month now, after the last episode and nothing is out of the ordinary there... I had an appointment to had the radio looked at in the morning and they pulled a report from the computer , nothing was showing a day before this happened. I just don't want to mess with the truck at all as I have a feeling this is going to probably be a problem they can't find in their three tries at fixing it and it may be going back as a lemon....
I had not cords pluged into anything! What I want to know is where did all the power from two big batteries go in less than three hours? Brakes and Glow plugs are the only thing I can think of..... The Rock 2 is charging along without any issues now at 21000 miles...
They never told me the cause.. I figure it was the new emergency brake or the glow plugs were staying on.. Only things that could drain 2 batteries in three hours>
I still have not been told what would use all the power in two large truck batteries in 3 hours just sitting there....After being driven for a while... They turned off my automatic emergency brake for sure... Now the truck rolls for three inches everytime I hook up a trailer even after pushing the brake button...
How would a computer problem discharge the power in a short time? I would think It would have to be a high use item like a hung started motor or running ac fan, or even a short...
