Janis is a queen who recorded a ton of great music. This song was written by a great singer/songwriter, Kris Kristofferson, who also acts.

This was on the last album she was on. She died in 1970 and this was released in 1971. She was here and then gone just like Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison. Great job, Mo!

This song was written by Kris Kristofferson and originally recorded by Roger Miller. Kristofferson had his own version of it, as did Gordon Lightfoot, but Janis' cover was the best.

One of my all-time favorite lyrics: "Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose" There was a performance in tribute to her at the Grammy's years ago, Joss Stone and Melissa Etheridge that is one of my all-time favorite performances. Would highly recommend that you check it out - even though it's not Janis, it really hits at the heart of her songs. If you are interested, a little more about that performance with Joss Stone and Melissa Etheridge and what it meant to me. Melissa was recovering from cancer and this was her first performance after finishing her treatment. Well, my mother's name was Janice (spelled differently) and grew up as a huge Janis Joplin fan. A few years before this specific performance, my mother passed away from cancer. So anytime I see that performance, and really, anytime I hear Janis Joplin, I get a little emotional. For that it pairs well with "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding from 1967, the first ever posthumous single to top the charts in the U.S. Macabre references aside, but they both tore it up at the legendary Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, along with Jimi Hendrix and The Who. i am 78 years old. I was a Junior at the University of Texas in Austin . Janis had just been voted "The Ugliest Man o n Campus'." She was regularly playing at Kenneth Threadgill"s place on the drag. When she was not drunk or stoned she was fantastic. The best I ever heard. Lost her way too soon to drugs and booze.. Great post thank you Morenikeji for the post. Her early Influences were blues artists Ma Rainy, Bessie Smith, and Lead Belly. She had substance abuse problems for much of her young life. Tragically dying of a heroin overdose.
