My New Guitar "SYNTH + ELECTRIC + ACOUSTIC" Pedalboard is Finally Finished!!!

It's finally done! I put together a portable guitar pedal board that I can use live for both electric guitar, acoustic guitar, and guitar synth. I have an interesting rig because I need to do a lot with my sounds. I play a Godin XTSA that has a 13-pin synth out that sends three signals... electric, acoustic and synth to the Roland GR-55 guitar synthesizer.
The signal path goes from the GR-55 I split the signal into two outs, synth and combined electric acoustic. I can then send the synth sounds out to a direct box through the SKB pedalboard loop and the guitar signal now goes to my pedals. GR55 - Boss TU-2 Tuner - Boss CE-2 Chorus - Butler Tube Driver Clone Overdrive - Joyo Dyno compressor - Boss DD-20 Giga Delay with tap tempo - Boss RV-5 Reverb - AB Switch, and then the SKB pedalboard sends it to a DI too.
Because I use delay and reverb on both my acoustic and electric guitar tones, I wanted one board that could do both guitars rather than building tow boards. So the AB pedal switches the signal to a third out that I send wirelessly to a guitar amp in another room through the XVIVE U2 Wireless Guitar System. The SKB Case has a great built in isolated power supply too, so I don’t have to add another power supply to the rig.
The great thing about the plastic SKB case is that I can transport my pedals safely in them because with the lid on it is like a suitcase. This makes it super easy to setup in seconds.
One last thing. I used HOSA cables on this build and am super glad I did. Hosa cables are great and I don’t have to worry about cheap cables going bad on me. I especially like the Hosa Edge cables.

Great setup brother! I've been using my GR55 exclusively, since our keyboardist left the band. We decided to forge on without him, and I've been trying to cover some of his parts. It's a fun challenge.God bless!

I do the same A/B thing on my board! I switch leading from acoustic and electric quite often so I had the same idea. Like you said, it makes more sense than putting together a whole other board.

I cannot stop watching this video! In fact, your board piqued my interest in the DD-20, so I found your review of that product and ended up snagging a pristine unit (with box and literature) off Craig's List for $100! Only issue now is that I have to rearrange my board yet again (oh, poor me, lol) and I keep coming back to this vide for ideas.

Nice rig bud, kind of a headache to get working right , but once you get it fixed it'll be set.I run a stereo rig at home , but for live a performance it's kind of a hassle unless you have enough room on your PA rig.I run most of my stuff thru a Fulltone Tape echo in stereo to a Boss GT-6,(mostly like you only for a few effects.) from there to my Boss eq.to a tube screamer, dod Supra distortion and I'll run my Vox wah thru my GT-6.I split my signal to a Twin Reverb and Marshall DSL for cleans and crunch. On smaller gigs I hook up to a AC15 and a Allen Classic10 watter that sounds just like a Blues jr. There again a clean and crunch sound that sounds good for any kind of tunes your playing. But your rig is a little more portable than mine for sure.Nice.👍

Looks nice Kennis. I finally got my XTSA last week. I'm blown away. I've got a couple issues I need to work through with my desire to go straight to the board (no amps). I'll send you the final setup for my rig as soon as I get it and test it. Spoiler alert: I don't like the way the XTSA acts with respect to the acoustic models on either the PCM1 or PCM2. I like Electric Models on basically everything, so the 13 PIN is awesome for that. But without coming out of the 1/4 Inch Jacks on the Guitar, I feel like I'm leaving a ton of capability on the table. Answer? Boss AD-10 (on the way). It has 2 inputs that I will run both my 1/4 Inch Jacks to. That will in affect give me 2 electric guitar layers (13 Pin Modeled + a super clean layer from the AD-10), plus a dedicated Processor for the 1/4 Acoustic output of the XTSA that I'll process through the AD-10 (which will also act as my DI). I got an additional channel on the board now, so with the 2 channels coming from the stage to the mixing room, I'll run my GR-55 through a Radial JDI Passive DI and then with my additional channel, I'll run my AD-10 and it's 2 channels (electric clean and acoustic from the XTSA). I think I'm going to be able to have a really blow away rig, with no amps on the stage.

Pretty awesome, Kennis...I LOVE it! Mine is a two-tiered, homemade vinyl-laden wooden unit that includes: GR-55; DigiTech VL-4 (Vocalist Live); Boss RC-50 looper; Roland EV-5 expression pedal; Boss CTL switch/pedal; and a mic kill switch, along with a GDI-21 amp simulator; a Boss digital delay, and sometimes a DigiTech EX-7 for the raw guitar signals; with all cords routed neatly inside the enclosure with a single, on/off switch enabled power supply. It works and looks killer, but over the years: I discovered that I seldom use anything other than the GR-55 during our weekly P&W service. Since we rent/share our building with another group and the thing weighs a ton; I only recently removed the synth for stand-alone use, having edited the patches to include the Normal Pickup configuration according to your videos (I mainly use an Ovation with GK-3). I would have never considered such a thing previously, but those "Kennis inspired" modeled guitar and synth tones, layered underneath the natural sound of my Ovation, helped me to minimize my footprint and alleviate some back pain, lol. Keep up the tutorials, they are a GREAT help!

Real quick question: After making the Normal Pickup mod, my dedicated Guitar-out stopped sending a signal. When I initialize the unit to factory settings, it works, but when I restore my saved data (which includes your programs), it does not output a signal. I know that w/o looking at my unit, it is hard to diagnose, but from what I provided...any ideas to restore the guitar output? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks, Jim

BTW: I adjusted the "Guitar Output" (system) setting to be either "N/P, or Both," with no change.

Kennis: FYI (should this ever happen to someone else)...I discovered my issue with no "Guitar Output:" when one modifies the volume setting to enable the guitar 'Normal Pickup' to be a local function, it terminates the dedicated guitar signal on that connection. Now that I know the issue, I can easily toggle between the two when necessary. Thanks again for all the GR-55 support (and other endeavors). God bless...

Hi! Great video! I have the same pedalboard. I noticed that your dd20 is plugged in to the 9v AC input. Will that be okay? As far as i know, DD20 should be plugged on a dc adaptor.

What a fantastic setup. On a smaller scale Is it possible to plug the GR55 into the Strymon Big Sky and use the Cab sim to record direct into the DAW?

Cool, but I am happy just with the XTSA and occasional use of the GR 55 ....those two do so much when fully utilised I would not want the power station and Monty Python wiring of all those spurious external devices,or see the need as it is all in the GR55. The hiss, hum and noise factor would rule it out I bet in a studio or quiet church I would have thought...? Just how many Kg or lbs does all that lot in the case plus cables weigh, and is your set up time as quick as just using XTSA via 13 pin and GR55 into the house PA like I do? I know you have not had much chance to use it and are still jubilant about finally completing the project Kennis.....but I would be very interested to see a follow up in 6 months as to how useful it turns out to be,or whether you simplify and travel light as I have done! Best wishes,Baz in NW UK.

Great video! I actually bought an Xtsa much to do with your original review on the Godin Xtsa. You should be getting paid for that review! I have not yet been able to pull the trigger on the GR-55. Prob more to do with cost and the fact that I’ve been building a pedal board. I looked at it like, I either get a GR-55 or, I go with a pedal board... pedal board won. You mention that you don’t really use the GR-55 for effects... is that because you value classic pedals or were the effect sounds not quite good enough? Or, with multiple jacks on the Xtsa, does it just give you more options for your outs on the guitar? Currently my board is a pedal train junior. It has a: TC Helicon Harmony Singer (vocal harmonizer), Boss OC-3 (octave), Electro Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive, Earthquaker Devices (reverb/delay w/tap) connecting a mini exp. Pedal for added control and Boss RC-30 Loop Station. Love learning through these vids! Great to see a GR-55 incorporated on to a board!

Boss gp10s or the sy- 300 also from boss. The gp10 uses the 13 pin the sy300 uses a standard 1/4 input. I have been looking at the gr-55 and or the gp10 for a while now just can’t pull the trigger on the cost. But I would love to see a play threw of the board.

I gotta know, did you eventually fry the DD-20 using AC? All conventional wisdom I’ve come across says don’t supply AC to DC circuits. I’m picking one of these up Monday, and I have a DD-20, so I’m super curious how well that worked.

Sick build, mate. Absolutely amazing. What do you think about that Joyo Comp? I just ordered one and I would like to know what to expect. I just need some clean and transparent compression for clean stuff (I hope it's not squishy). Cheers, mate.

Nice setup, although it appears your synth & chorus are losing some impact by running a mono signal instead of stereo? I'd at least run stereo to the PA board, unless your PA is also mono. Mono is definitely easier to mix for FOH, but stereo is worth it, IMHO. Being a retired performer, I can criticize such things, freely. No charge. 😉 Oh, for my last "live' rig I used basically two flight cases sorta like yours, one contained a VG-88v2 for FX and bass, and a GR-33 & a Boss stereo volume pedal in the other case. I used a MIDI merger to run those out to an XV-5080 for a massiveness here & there, it and a power amp, line conditioner, DBX, Aphex, in a 6 space tilt-roller rack. I usually never bothered with any guitar cable other than the 13 pin, although I did mess around running both in the studio & at home. I simply got too old & my back too painful to continue, which was depressing, but I got over that. Good looking gear & axes man, look forward to hearing you & all that stuff... 😎

Sorry man, I did an edit to my post you may not have seen, describes my old rig from about 10 years ago... Yours looks good, regardless. And yes, left/right echo bounces are a great effect for a delay.

Man, it’s unnecessary, all you need is GR 55 & a midi controller bank board, that’s all, easy & cheaper & better & more efficient.

500 points of failure LOL. I hope you're packing 2 spare *everything* bc you're gonna need them - especially the oddball 13 pin stuff, the DIs, and the wireless stuff - a night mare of complexity. RUSH has a simpler stage rig LOL

I feel like any board is going to have a ton of ways it can fail... The only out of the ordinary things on this board are the ways the signal enters and leaves. So the obvious first solution would be plugging in directly to the tuner and out from the reverb. Boom! Fixed! Outside of that it's a fairly normal setup.
