If you have room, and are interested in consolidating and organizing your baking stuff to one area, consider adding one of these vintage gems to your kitchen. They can definitely make life easier for the modern homemaker -- just like they did for our Grandmothers!

if you will take a block of canning wax or a wax candle and rub it on the bottom edges of your drawers and the rungs the drawers sit on they will slide in and out much easier.

Exactly! We used beeswax on the drawer bottoms and they slide nicely now. Thanks for posting this video!

I just got one in a consignment shop and I’m so excited! Been painting the inside and the pull out shelves. This is something that I have wanted for so long. It needs a lot of work, but has everything intact. I feel very lucky to finally have one. :)

My mum had a Hoosier with the enamel shelf and it was amazing. During October we did chili parties with roasters on them and after Thanksgiving she put her snow village up in it. We had a different one in the back room that I didn't like as much, but my sister got it when she moved out

You lucked out on this one! The ones we have around here are twice what you paid but in terrible shape (like stored in a barn for 50 years under the pigeon nests, LOL!!). But hey, old furniture may cost a few hundred dollars but they are built MUCH better than new which will set you back even more! Not to mention these will last another hundred years.

The Hoosier Company history is really interesting. My grandmother had a genuine Hoosier in her kitchen, across from her wood cook stove, which she used up to the day she died (and probably that day, too).

Beautiful piece. Mine has a couple upgrades, including a slim LED light strip, a surge protector for the mixer (which lives in the cabinet) and other items, a shelf for a small electronic scale and one for my cookbook/notebook, etc. Thanks for the video

That's it' I'm officially jealous! A little beeswax on the bottoms of those drawers might help.

We have a hoosier, best piece of furniture for a small kitchen with no counter space. Inside our double doors is the original paper with measurments, etc. We also have drawers for cutlery, and a pull out cutting board just beneath the enamel counter (ours pulls out too). It's painted an awful green color but hubby won't let me strip it. Will have to look on the side now to see if the meat grinder bracket is there. Enjoy your new furniture, you earned it and it's lovely!

Don't kill me, Renee. I know I love the "old, fine " goodies as much as the next person. Ironically I have all these old time kitchens saved on my phone that are absolutely amazing for their time especially. But I wonder how bad would it be to have your husband, that would be my husband build one of these I know it's not old, LOL but it would be just as functional. I love yours. It's just gorgeous and certainly fits you and your personality and your kitchen! Congrats GF, you done real good! :-)

I just came upon your video. I wanted a Hoosier forever and finally found one on Marketplace. Paid more than I wanted to, but the outside was nicely refinished, and the inside was intact. It is a Sellers similar to yours. It has the pull-out flour sifter and also a hanging glass sugar jar. My husband has been fixing the inside where it was cobbled together at some point. I know just how you feel about your Hoosier, because I feel the same way about mine! Thank you for your video and information.

IDEA IDEA IDEA ----- the way that flour sifter swings down is like how the old time typewriter shelves would swing out of the cabinets under the desk - (they are made for the heavy weight of the typewriter too) - if you can't find the "real swing thing" maybe your husband can find/modify/re-work one of those typewriter shelves or get the "blue print" on how to make one

Oh my gosh! I am so excited that I found your channel! Your sellers Hoosier is exactly like mine! And it has been hard to find one. But I think someone had painted mine white. That shelf in the long side door where the flour sifter goes does belong there. Mine has it also. The flour sifter goes below it and it’s smaller . Mine is attached I just don’t have the sifter part that goes on it. Which I am searching for! But I am so excited I finally got to see another one exactly like mine❤️❤️❤️

Greetings from New Hampshire! Found your video while searching for information on my original Hoosier brand baking cabinet. I think mine is around 1924 > 1937. Mine was stored on an unheated porch and is in stressed condition. Hence it is now storing my art supplies in the the kitchen, while awaiting restoration. A bit musty.Our farm cottage is open concept living room/kitchen and looks a lot like yours! I have to put my furniture in some form of friendly function. You made my day when I saw your kitchen dynamics is like mine :-) ~Diane

Someone left the bottom of a Hoosier in an apt and the landlord said I could have it. They had another wooden cabinet on top but it wasn't a Hoosier. Still, I absolutely LOVE my (partial) Hoosier. FUN!

What a lucky "find"! If I was to re-do my kitchen, I'd put in all free-standing cupboard / storage cabinets and totally do away with built-ins, unless they were open shelving. Hey, can you tell me: I've been having a lot of traffic on this video of late (and it's a bit of an older one). Did someone mention it some place? Just curious if I need to thank someone!

What an awesome gift to yourself. I am the proud owner of my grandmother's cabinet. She received hers when they got married. My grandparents celebrated 50 plus years together. I remember it sitting in my grandma's kitchen. Mine has the zinc top, and of course the flour sifter. There are some things that I need to repair and will hopefully do it soon. I have used mine as a baby changing table, a scrapbooking center and just a place to display things.

As an English girl Im telling you when you do the scones make sure you either have heavy cream or clotted cream and jam for the inside, that recipe doesnt look like it had it but they look better if you put an egg wash ontop before you put them in the oven. English scones can have fruit baked in or you can do savory ones with cheese.

I have a modern day bakers rack. But would love one of those I went on kijiji and found 45 of them in Ontario ranging from $200 - 1400. One I absolutely love is a painted one from the 1920's that has an arched top. It would go just lovely in the place that the baker's rack is in and would fit this old house built in 1906 very well.

I have a Housier Cabinet and I love it!!! Yours is beautiful too!!! I got mine by a trade with my cousin. She wanted my bookshelf because her daddy built it and she knows I love old things so she ask me if I wanted to trade. I jumped on that one!! The Housier cabinet that she gave me belonged to her husband's grandmother that used it faithfully and was handed down to his mom. His mom used it every day to make biscuits and things on until she died a few years ago.

I grew up with one of those, my mom still has it. More of a bar all my life (wink wink ) It is supposed to be mine one day, at this rate I'll be to old to roll dough by the time I get it lol. Love the great description you gave on it. Only diff with ours is the cabinets have etched glass . Thank you great video :)

+Fncy Fanny My uncle got my Grandma's and used it to store nuts and bolts in out in his pole barn. My sister and I tried like mad to get it from him, but I guess it had sentimental value to him and he wouldn't part with it. . Ahem. Sadly, the cabinet ended up with a bad case of carpenter ants and he threw it out. I'm trying not to be bitter about that. . . Someday, I'll get there.

My Grandma had one of these when I was growing up and I have wanted one for a long time. Alas the desire for one happened after I had a kitchen rebuild done when we moved into this house and there is no room now. I love the way you oriented yours with the other living space and also what you plan for the back. It is just beautiful and so very functional. Makes you want to dive in there and make those scones. Thanks for sharing this lovely piece. have a Blessed day.

Thank you Margaret for your sweet comment. When we moved here, there was no place for my beloved butcher block that I had in our old house. So it sat in our big barn for about 10 years. Then we remodeled the kitchen and the design revolved around IT! So, if you come across a Hoosier in good shape and a good deal, you may want to simply stash it away for later . . . : )

Oh wow. That is just ingenious. A flour sifter built right into the bottom of the flour container. Sure would need to bake a lot of cakes and cookies to go through that much flour's worth though lol
@Michigansnowpony
@Michigansnowpony 8 лет назад
+crazy808ish If one is baking bread every week as well as if there are multiple bakers in the family, it wouldn't last as long as you might think. Back when these cabinets were popular, not only was the lady of the house making bread, but EVERYTHING was made from scratch, from noodles to pies, from rolls to crackers, and everything in between. So, that flour probably didn't last as long as you might think. I have noticed since my girls are now baking more, a 5 gallon bucket of flour doesn't last very long. I'll be very happy when that flour bin is installed! (Of course, it probably won't be any time soon with Spring arriving and all the other projects my husband has to do first.)

I agree in a HUGE way about the sliding counter top. It's a MUST HAVE in the cabinet along with the flour sifter, without those, I would just keep my kitchen "stuff" and work with that. My sister has one that was in her ex-husbands family. (I think she still has it) It has a flour sifter, but I don't think it was working. Interesting about how you say the kitchens used to be with furniture rather than built in cabinets. I need a new kitchen and was thinking about doing more of a furniture style cabinetry rather than built ins. It's just a matter of whether it's going to be in this house or a different one.

The Seller's cabinets were made in Elwood, Indiana and I have one very similar to the one you have. Mine no longer has the porcelain top, I think maybe it had been zinc, but does have a pull out top. I do not have the sifter either. I live very near where they were made. I have had mine for years. Mine has all original metal pulls and it has the center cabinet with a mirror on the top cabinet door. It also has cabinet doors on both sides at the top and there was never a roll top to cover the opening which is smaller than yours. It looks to be the same size, and is oak. I also have two Seller's tall white cabinets. They have always been painted. I did have the big sugar jar but gave it to my son when he got married for their Seller's cabinet that is painted. I enjoyed your video very much.

Then, we remodeled the kitchen area. You can bet the remodel was designed around getting it into this house! I love the old stuff -- as long as it's still functional in some way / shape/ or form. We use our pie safe to store DVD's and music CD's.

Michigansnowpony, Yes, I love the older stuff too. I have some pieces from my grandma that I will always keep. I like things that show some history. :)

Beautiful cabinet! I live in TN, and my experience looking for these: Yes, in the south they are easier to find ,but you have to be very, very careful even with individual sellers. With the 'DIY mason jar decor' movement here, many of these pieces have cobbled together parts that have destroyed some of the functions. "Slap a coat of chalk paint on it, and voilá! Shabby chic and no one knows the plastic feet are taken from a fisher price toy!" Yep...I blame pintrest, lol.

I had one years ago. I only reason why I didn't keep it was that the wood had dried out. I think the owners before me had it hear a wood stove. Anyway the wood was just getting to brittle. Loved it though.
