My 2020 Ford Mustang GT was dead silent until I did my first oil change, then I developed the dreaded 5.0 engine tick. On the bright side, I did get one of my other issues fixed. It turned out to be a faulty wheel bearing.

I've had my 18 for almost 4 years now. It's ticked since new. It hasn't caused any engine issues. I was really stressed out about it until I learned a valuable lesson and not listen to "experts" online.

My 2020 tick but I’m hoping my 2022 won’t tick. I don’t think it’s an issue or detrimental to the engine but it does sound tacky. Sucks ford never addressed the issue or resolved it but still won’t stop me loving the mustang. Tick away and just send it.

@@RSProduction18 I ended up not getting a 2022. Going to wait for the s650. I’ve heard though that the 21 and 22’s don’t tick. I know for a fact the 18-20’s ticked. My 2020 ticked.

@@spartamodz7582 yeah the tick is “harmless”. My 2020 developed it at 2k miles and I had it until 16k miles. I only had the car for about a year until I totaled it. But tick never caused anything bad to happen and plenty of 2011 and up mustang owners had it. Also f-150 owners with the coyote had the tick and some trucks having 200k miles never had issues. Only time I’d be concerned if you had oil consumption issues or very loud rattling or rod knock which is a separate issue.

Also my 2020 GT also made that weird starter sound from time to time! I think it’s just the design of the starter. At the end of the day it’s a ford so you have to deal with ford quality. Keep sending it man enjoy it!

What’s weird is my 04 Mach 1 made a similar noise. It would tick inconsistently but only when it was hot and when the oil was new. 3k into the oil it would be dead silent. My 17 gt has the same issue yours does so I added a bottle and 1/2 of liquimoly and it went away although it started coming back again after about 1.5k. Hopefully 5w30 will help

Ford was replacing motors for the typewriter tick. Then they put out a service bulletin saying that it's normal. The Piston slap sound is on some of them and that's around 2,000 to 2,500 RPM. Sounds like the Pistons rattling. I took mine in for that and Ford said that that's normal too. I sometimes wonder if I should even keep mine.

@@JVette01 I agree. I'm more concerned about the piston slap than the tick. My car doesn't have the tick. I'll have it borescoped before the powertrain warranty is up.

The tick is piston slap ..that means the piston is loose in the bore. Ford uses an addative in their brake in oil when you change the oil it comes out with the old oil. There is additives that you can replace it with. But it does not stop the noise it just makes it harder to hear it.Piston slap is not bad unless the piston to bore space gets too large. Then the piston is loose and hits the bore and breaks.

My brand new 2022 5.0 kinda have the same noise you got on the wheel bearing. Mine would come outta no where tho. Idk if it’s the wheel bearing but sometimes it makes the noise on the rear right side of my car. I can hear it from the inside

2020 pp1, tick started after my third (annual) oil change at 2500 miles. I switched from running 5w20 FS to 5w30 FS. Last night I added half a bottle of ceratec, and after the engine idled long enough to get up to temp I didn't hear the tick. If the tick comes back (which I think it most likely will after some miles driven and/ or another oil change) I'm not sure I'm going to keep this car. It was a $50k mustang new so I'm not going to "just live with it" as internal ticking sounds are annoying as hell to me.

@@sydneystone8979 one bottle of Ceratec and the fix is gone! You will need to add it every time after an oil change, it costs $20... My 2017 Mustang GT never had the tick again after treating it with ceratec after every oil change.

2018 gt mustang I had the tick also. race it pass redline, crack the block. replaced it w aluminator 5.0L engine calimer trans. mgw DDS drive line vmp tune pedders coil overs w external canisters bmr k brace stop the hop rear braces by bmr fhp front strut brace bmr rear strut brace bmr and steeda complete suspension mods plus roush cold induction mangnaflow 3" exhaust fhp high output alternator dw-400 fuel pump cold case radiator auto sport roll cage...one badd pony only way to stop the tick fhp aluminator!

Just bought a 2023 6 speed 3 months ago. No tick/noises till I changed the oil and filter 2 weeks ago @ 2070 miles. Used Pennzoil 5-30 FS. I can hear the tick at idle around the oil pan/bell housing. I had a ‘10,14, and ‘17 all over 100k miles and never heard this before. 🙁

My car has a tic. I hear it sometimes in idle but when i rev or step on gas i hear the tic getting faster. So assuming its a cylinder problem. Car drives fine tho

Just sharing my experience, had a 2017 mustang gt PP 3k miles.. had same ticking noise not at idle... rev to 1800rpms and would sound the same. Would drown out after.. begged ford to take a look at it after they kept refering to that message about not to fix and its the "characteristoc" of the engine lol they fix it... found a small amount of damage in cylinder 7.. replaced the engine under warranty.. sold as soon as i can sorry if this is bad news but i couldnt accept my car sounding like that especially It being soo new

it sounds like you have an exhaust manifold leak in one of your manifolds banks, based upon how the sounds get louder and softer as you rev and drive.Check your exhaust manifold bolts, manifolds themselves for cracks and/ or manifold gaskets.

@@JVette01 So? ...And yet you don't know where that tapping sound is coming from. not trying to be funny sir. Even if a car is new, it can still have an issue with the exhaust manifold or manifold gasket. If you haven't located the source of that tapping sound yet, ask a mechanic to send a listening hose to the exhaust manifold area. See if he could at least determine the sound throughout the exhaust manifolds is non-existent in that area. I'm speaking by experience. Not trying to amuse you.

intresting, i know some cvt had a ticking sound when shifting to a gear. but i never heard something like this in the idle

It’s well known for the 5.0. They call it the typewriter or bbq tick.

Is there a TSB from Ford on this? What do the techs at your dealership say, do they have an opinion they might have relayed to you, and those wheels look awesome.

Its a non issue. If it bothers you get a bottle of LiquiMoly Ceratec and it will solve it. I only need 1/2 of a bottle to get mine to go away. Mine also happened after the 1st oil change.

My 2022 GT has it too and I noticed after first oil change.... Seen a lot of people say it's the tick, others say it's a piston slap and such... this is so complicated XD I'm actually kind of stressed because I've seen that some of these people have had their engine replaced because of it.

I have heard people putting additives in that make it go away. I just don’t want the hassle of doing that every oil change and putting in substances I shouldn’t have to in the first place.

I own 2 mustang GT 04 and a 14 and I bought both as used cars and if they had a tic in the engine I never would have bought them so I am tic free for now and I am waiting for the 2024 mustang GT and I don’t want to spend 50-60 grand for a car with tics in the engine

My gen 1 coyote is still quiet. The BBQ tick is a big mystery but professional engine builders say its not normal 4:20

The tick becomes less noticeable if you put in 5w30 instead of 5w20. I also put in 2 bottles of Liqui Moly Cera Tec Friction Modifier 300 ml bottles after every oil change. I've had my 2018 for 4 years and have it as well and trust...it's normal.

I have 2021 just hit 2k miles and it just developed the typewriter tick would mobile 1 5w-30 help? I also heard 5w-50 is really good in this car

@@k.santiago1938 yep. Goodness I wish my poor baby was still under 10k...she's at 88.5k lol. But to both of you trust me, don't go insane we with this like I did. Enjoy your respective babies. The higher weight oil does help along with the liquid molly but I don't dare go above 5w30. I think anything higher would be better for boosted applications but I'm not a pro on that matter Cj pony parts released a video a few years back on the typewriter tick.

if oil/additives are changing the character of the tick it means the metal is constantly banging inside the engine lol this is a LONG TERM degradation issue and you wont notice anything for the first few years. I got rid of my 19 GT for this reason alone!

There isn't any evidence that the tick is resulting in any sort of degradation from any oil analysis reports or users (that I could find at least). There are cars with over 200,000 miles on these motors still ticking along just fine making good power.

Before I got my first oil change, I had a very random tick...until 6.1.23 when I got my 1st oil change done at the dealer. Now when I am in drive and stopped, it ticks a ton...when I go into neutral it almost stops. How is this normal for a $50k car?

I wonder if it’s just exhaust popping? Definitely doesn’t sound like a lifter tick or anything like a bottom end knock. Maybe it’s just got hot exhaust that’s enough to combust any fuel droplets that may make it through after combustion or just expansion of metals in the exhaust

This has been going on for years. Not specific to Ford either. The funny thing is I got the tick after my 3rd oil change. Went away after 1500 miles. Just had my 4th change and still no tick. Some use Ceratec to get rid of it.

I purchased my '19 GT new. The only noise I have is the 2k rattle. I've put 36k on it and have had no issues. The rattle has been there since new. I upgraded my exhaust so I don't hear the rattle now.

Get some liqui moly ceratec it will go away, what worked for me. I got a 2017 and it ticked till I put ceratec In and it’s been gone ever since

I've heard of additives or thicker oil fixing this. Are you running 5W-20 or 5W-30? Conventional, blend, or synthetic?

5w30 full synthetic. Just changed my oil a week ago and the tick is now back and loud. For the past 2-3k miles it’s been pretty quiet.

I took my 2022 GT PP1 into Ford for its first oil change at 5k, walked around to look at where my car was, 5mechanics were staring at my JLT air filter etc, after I was told my car was done 2hrs later it took 30+ mins for my car to get from the garage to the pick up bay! Started raining went home, noticed the next day my car making this same noise and a knocking too! I HAVE NO DOUBT THE FORD TECHS HOT RODDED MY CAR AND OVERREVVED IT!

I don't think the mechanic(s) could've done anything to induce it. Changing the oil is the common denominator (typically the first oil change) with what seems to start the typewriter tick

@@matthewhartup941 they took it out on the road put 3fing miles on it! The mechanic can over rev your engine just as easy as anyone! There’s no reason to road test a car on an oil change! So there is something a tech can do to cause noise! They may not have but could’ve! I ended up putting Royal purple 5w-30 and Ceratec in it and the noise left.. but there’s something they did to cause it because Zero tick before and tick right after without doubt.

And when they seen me asked the color “ mischievous purple “ and couple other questions about the JLT intake etc, plus they put 3miles on it and was gone for over 15 minutes! No reason to road test a car on an oil change!

My 2020 GT also had the bbq tick and the 2k rattle. It was annoying but didn’t cause any performance issues or do anything abnormal other than tick. I ended up totaling my 2020 GT unfortunately but I honestly don’t think the tick is detrimental to the engine. I can’t say the same for the 2k rattle. Regardless it didn’t stop me from ordering a 2022 Mustang GT. Tick away and just send it man. And yes it’s way more audible in drive thrus and when it’s echoing off something. But I wouldn’t worry too much. If it blows you have warranty, and if it doesn’t blow, then we worry for nothing.

I had so many problems with my 2018 GTI had to sell it. Literally every aspect of the vehicle. Engine tick transmission shudder when letting the clutch out AC would go crazy on its own when set to 72 body panel alignment issues with the trunk which ended up smashing the quarter panel. 50,000 dollar piece of trash.

Two years ago I had a Mustang Bullitt on order. Then through RU-vid I learned about the "tic" issue that some Coyote engines were experiencing. Between ordering the car and taking delivery of car Ford issued a statement that this noise is a character of the Coyote engine and that they are instructing dealerships to not do any repairs going forward for this issue. I cancelled the Bullitt.

yours sounds just like my brand new 2023 only yours is a lot cooler with the brembos & wheels but I want to ask, how is the car? do you still have her? now & again I feel it jerk when getting on & off the gas if I don’t ease back into it you know, also got a ton of back static in the back seat area, is all this normal? yours ticks just like mine & clunks at idle the exact same haha

5w30 oil and some zddp or some ceretec no more tic mos2 additive works as well got a 2020 pp2. Ticked after first oil change started putting zddp additive and no more tick liqui molly has two products that work or use Lucas zddp plus it works the best but might poison the cat my car has 50000 miles and I abuse the shit out of it also I've lost count of the 1/4 or 1/8 mile passes it's done gets some 5w30 oil and some additive and drive it

Mine makes the exact same thicking sound. But I noticed that it is only when in gear. If it is neutral, it does not do that. I'll go to service this week to check it. So fucking annoying. Did you solve this issue?

It’s usually around 21 mpg with majority highway driving. It would be higher if I didn’t….. drive spiritedly 😂

I have no doubts about the reliability of this car. I think it will be very reliable. There are just some annoyances that pop up here and there that need addressed.

Mustang wheel bearings are made of toilet paper. I had one replaced and it literally crumbled to pieces in the techs hand 🤣

Just got my first oil change and does the same tick😒 took it the Ford dealer to check it out and they didn’t say anything and just gave it back only had the car for 4 months it’s a 2022😒

Yeah… that’s just kinda what they do. Mine will do the tick after a fresh oil change and then go away like 3k miles in… then come back when the oil is changed again.

I think the tick is from the timing chain , pretty sure thats all it is. Just a noisy timing chain ⛓ but idk for sure 🤔

I have a 21 GT 6 speed.. at 25-2700 rpm’s, the engine makes and annoying rattle. Dealer tells me it’s normal and doesn’t effect the performance, however, in an area where sound bounces, it sounds like complete shit.. the back seats creek every time the body shifts.. apparently also normal.. has a clunk in the steering, dealer replaced right upper and lower control arms.. claimed it was dry ball joints.. a week later, the noise is back.. also has rear strut mount’s replaced thinking that was what was causing the noise in the back which turned out to be the rear seat latches.. the Mustang GT for me has been a huge disappointment.. IMO, very poorly built.. and I drive mine normally, I can only imagine what it would sound like if I actually put it through the ringer 🙄

I am thinking of buying a new 2022 Mustang GT. Are you telling me after all these years with the Coyote 5.0 Ford STILL has NOT fixed this engine "ticking" problem?! That's absolutely disgusting! That's a sure fire way to lose customers. Ford, are you listening?!

I have a 2020 GT and I have the exact same tick as yours, louder on the driver side and also does it when I rev it. It appeared at 8000 miles after my 2nd oil change. I really don't know if I should keep the car or sell it as I wanted to keep it forever :/

It’s annoying but I heard it has no affect on reliability. You can try putting an additive in to quiet it/fix it but you’d have to do it every oil change. Question: What oil did you use?

Dang I was gonna switch to that oil in hopes that it goes away but I guess that’s just something we’re gonna have to live with lol

@@JVette01 It really makes me upset as I like to drive with my windows down and I always hear it at every red light and also when I'm parking in my garage. I'm considering selling the car for something else but prices for both used and new car are crazy now. I'll wait till the biden student loan pause expires on Feb 1st.

It’s frustrating for sure but the rest of the car is so enjoyable that I try to ignore stuff like that. I just tell myself that nothings perfect haha

FORD has had literally 'decades' not days/months,but DECADES to get their shit together and fast fwd decades later and everytime i seem to go online or hear about any ford(pickups too!) countless recalls and suprisingly ford is still in business;i went with a friend who bought/ordered a brand new ranger fx4 he had to take it back 4 days later because weather stripping was literally hanging off the extended cab door;well they made him wait for a week after just buying it outright part came in 2days my point they were THAT busy in the waiting room/service areas that there wasnt an empty chair aval,as a result we sat out in the breezeway;he made the best choice after it was fixed finally to sell it back to the dealership and only lose a little,he said never again would he buy a ford and after seeing just how many ppl were there for complaints;some elderly woman showed up outside with an issue with her suvs tailgate,in other words another satisfied customer(not!)one after the next anyways nowadays ford is yet again recalling the mustang gt oh and the 2022s as well,i feel sorry for the BUYERS who trusted ford time and time again,which explains why i never went with a mustang gt too much bs and headaches

@@JVette01 I can agree with that, my new, back in the day 02 mustang gt had a loud chirping noise from the suspension when you hit small, but tall speed bumps. They couldn’t figure it out so I just lived with a bird living in my rear suspension hahahaha.
