My name is Eric and I own and run a full service niche market salvage operation in Saint Louis, MO. Part of our model is buying blown up and core engines and tearing them down to sell the parts. I rarely get a story with these engines, mileage and history are usually completely unknown.
This particular core is a 2012 Mustang GT 5.0L Coyote V8. This is the very first of its kind in our shop. This teardown went pretty smoothly, this is actually a VERY easy engine to work on. This engine is found in 2011-2014 Mustang GT, and its variant in the 2011-2014 Ford F150.
If you'd like to buy parts from this engine or others I've torn down, shoot us an email at Importapartsales@gmail.com.
Hope you enjoyed this teardown and thanks for watching!
-Eric

Failure analysis is a compelling thing for automotive folks. Years ago I ran a national trade assn. for maintenance management professionals. At our trade shows, the parts failure analysis presentations were always the star of the show. Add to that a guy with a pleasant personality and competent knowledge, this channel is destined for a million subs at some point.

They're good engines, but like anything else, preventative maintenance is everything. I do synthetic oil changes every 5000 on my 5.0 F150 and I always use Motorcraft oil filters. Neglect or abuse any engine and eventually it's gonna fail. People skip their oil changes and use garbage parts then can't understand why shit goes wrong.

Good teardown. I have a 2014 F-150 with the 5.0L. You hit it on the head. Oil starvation. Being a retired auto tech with 40 years busting my knuckles, it's all about maintenance which includes changing out ALL fluids with manufacture spec fluids. I always told my customers that I can do everything you need done but you have to bring your vehicle in for service. Most of them trusted my advice. Although the synthetic blend oils say you can go 5000 miles on an oil change, I'm old school and go 3000 on oil and filter and 30,000 miles on a trans service.

More like it was someone who thought they were into cars and bought the status symbol. And then didn't know how to take care of it. They probably went to the discount tire store and bought the cheapest offered for the vehicle as well. The whole vehicle will be in salvage sooner rather than later, and the owner will think the vehicle was all hype, never realizing they were the problem.

I did pro lawn equipment my employees fucked up to total distruction.. I have a very old echo blower ... 20 years old .. still my favorite as far as power to weight.. a fat new guy put regular gas in it and ignored the heat and noise and motor slowing down till he locked it up .. I was devistated .. I took it all the way down and got the rings unstuck .. there was scoring on the cylinder wall but I figured what the heck .. let's see if I can't put it back together just to find out .. It's back together and still running like a top .. I was stunned ... I do all my small moter stuff now and it's normal to see the kind of scoring the coyote had .. For some reason these just keep going strong .. the scoring doesn't seem to impede the motor at all .. to this day I've lost a lot of motors but gotten them all back just by a quick teardown and look see.. I have put new parts in some that were really bad but their all still chugging .. I got to be the dumping ground for all the large companies here just to find out free of charge what lead to the destruction so they could manage their employees accordingly .. I've only lost one kholer motor on an xmark but it came it with inspection holes in the block .. Employee fail and fire situation .. If they don't own it they will knowingly run it into the ground simply just so they don't have to go to the truck and get it's back up unit .. Thousands lost simply bc an asshole didn't want to have to walk 5 Xtra min .. Yes this is the world we live in .. And no , there's nothing we can do to fix it.. We are all doomed in a few generations

This motor likely died from overheat or boost, the first gen has bad coolant flow on the back cylinders, and they like to run out of ring gap and either score the shit outta the cylinders creating a massive compression leak, or they just make piston mcnuggets and adjustable rods like those one did. Usually the trucks score the walls on an overheat, Usually the mustang models make nuggets and stuff.

FRAM Bomb Detonation! I had a friend in high school who bought a '67 mustang with a 351 swap that had a FRAM on it. He complained to me about an idle tick and low oil PSI; I said 'change the oil put a Motorcraft or Wix or Purolator filter on it'. We did that, oil PSI went from 4-6 at idle to 30+ and the tick disappeared. This is why you never use FRAM. I don't think the oil level was low in this engine, I think the oil PRESSURE was low due to that oil filter.

Agree. Some of their stuff isn't bad, at least in recent years. Although on anything I can (even if it isn't Ford), I run Motorcraft filters. Very well built at a surprisingly cheap price.

This. Fram isnt just "orange can o death". The Ultra is probably one of the best filters out there, fairly inexpensive and very readily available.

yep, most folks dont think about how fast that oil pump can suck the oil pan dry at high rpm . burn outs kill a lot of motors with stock oil pans . it will suck the pan dry b4 the oil has time to return from the topside .

First in European cars then Japanese and Korean the final was Pontiac & Ford. I went into IT in 1984 until 2010. I am local to STL. I still help friends with older vehicles as needed as well as their computers. Still have my tools. 😊

Have 120,000 absolutely no problems 2012GT auto, ran Royal Purple to about 70,000 then shop stopped carrying it, would have cost me 140 for oil change. Burns 1 quart between a 5 thousand oil change, with spirited driving. I dont go with the 10,000 oil changes. A good high milage synthetic. Car still will go 150mph with confidence. Probably put in a Ford Performance Crate Motor at some point to last, untill 2035 when we cant but fossil fuel. Enjoy....

Ford Engineer made a pair in his garage, seriously..Ford wanted the 2011 to make 400hp naturally aspirated. Engineer said that they had to have these stainless steel tri shorty headers, no matter the extra cost. Hence, they came out with 2011 Muscle Car of the year, 420hp

My daily driver is powered by a 1.3 litre, normally-aspirated, pushrod 4-cylinder motor on which I've been doing ALL the maintenance since 1994. I am stunned by the complexity which motors have attained. At the same time, I'm fascinated by your work, and I wish I was working alongside you, because there is clearly so much that you could teach to me about the practical mechanics of tearing down and rebuilding 21st century motors. I'm now a subsriber, and sense a binge-watching marathon of your videos coming on....

@@JR-uc1of whats the gimmick? the first 5 quarts policy? wrong word for it, id say its disingenuous. though most cars are 5 or less, more and more use more of it. almost any truck is going to be 6 or 7, and a lot of luxury cars use 7+, any diesel truck is 10+ but those owners tend to know that thankfully.
