I think with all the attention on the house, I forgot what a creative woodworker you are. Two crude shelves and some donated boxes became an elegant tool storage unit and side bench. Impressive!

This felt like a vintage Laura Kampf video. Designing on the fly, using reclaimed materials, coming up with something completely different than what I would have done. New shop build is going to be fun! Thanks for sharing!

You mentioned AC, but ~Agua Dulce in summer, youll be spending $1500/mo in trying to cool a metal roof. Insulate the inside roof before you fill it up with obstacles! Solar panels too. Love to see you tackle these challenges and defeat them.

That truck you found was SUCH a good find. It can be extremely hard to find practical trucks in America these days. I live in farm territory and all of the farm trucks are old as hell because newer "trucks" are pointless showpieces too big to fit anywhere without the storage to match. No one who actually needs a practical vehicle can really use them... trucks like yours make me miss the one we had on the farm when I was a kid (old man alert lol).

!!!! My grandpa bought this exact car with a shoebox full of cash in 1998 and i was the second owner and LOVED using it back in Kansas. It's with my parents now and sees less action, but we regularly use it to haul loads of dirt and lumber and whatever strange things we see by the side of the road. It (and its longevity, and Lazarus-like ability to keep coming back from the dead) has brought us much joy and i hope you make as many happy memories with your trusty steed. I love how this truck keeps me connected to my grandpa, his workshop, and his resourceful ways and all he taught us, and it's a wave of nostalgia to see it in your videos. I hope to see it many more times as you build your workshop and your life in LA! Welcome to California! 🎉

All I can say is “spray foam insulation” it will make such a huge difference in managing the hot box that is that metal building.

Laura you are not only creating your own home(s) but I feel like you have always given me a sense of home as well. Let me explain: I’m German but I lived in the US for the past four years. During this time I always watched your videos and it truly felt like getting a piece of Germany every week it was something I always look forward to and that made feel really connected to home. Now I just moved back to Germany and I’m starting to really miss the US, especially this kind of grass-roots do it yourself attitude. And again your videos are making me feel so connected to that part of my personal experience (the timing does feel a bit surreal). So I guess I just want to applaud you on making such fun, and also meaningful content. I’m truly hope that this new part of your life will be everything you hoped for and more!

I always feel a huge sense of relief when my favourite makers are provided with sawstops. With the additional mental burden of recording everything, I’m glad that there’s some protection from momentary inattention.

You need two things to make a real Laura Kampf shop: a string of lights and a Laura Kampf sign in the background.

Roof racks Laura. Every pickup should have a set of stake roof racks.

earthquakes. That's the reason nails are so common on the west coast. you'll see relatively few brick buildings for the same reason. Nails bend when flexed, screws shatter. Our plumbing was copper and now flexible plastic instead of stainless as well.

This video had such a good old-school vibe! Tripod footage, voice over, small project... really feels like the old days on the channel.

I love your unplanned builds. They're logical, and buildable by those of us without a lot of big power tools while being scalable for our spaces. Thanks for bringing us along for both the house rebuild and the new shop!

The technical term is force majeure. It was going to be built the way it was going to be built. you (we, cause it happens to me too) are just the tool used to build it. Michelangelo said that he didn't sculpt it, he just cleared away the excess stone.

Glad you mentioned air conditioning. A metal box in the sun will get a mite warm in the summer near L.A.

That's an awesome space. Watch out for rattlesnakes and black widows around your wood piles and such. They will see your new space as comfy place to stay out there in the desertish areas.

The only thing I build is puppets but that’s my favorite way to do it too. No sketch, no plan. Best way I can describe it is I let the materials tell me what they want to be. So enjoyable. Can’t wait to see what comes out of this workshop Laura!

I have two shops/sets of tools 1,000 miles (1,600 km) apart, and it does sometimes drive me nuts when I know I have the tool I want, it's just 1,000 miles away. I'm gradually filling in the gaps, but I imagine you'll occasionally wish for stuff that's on a different continent. The new shop and your Toyota pickup will be great!

I once headed for L.A. out of Germany and have loads of precious memories. Following you on this path is wonderful. Especially since your approach to most things is so lean and straightforward. Hahahah, I would have just cut the legs off at the appropriate height and *boof* - workbench done. Of course promising myself to build a proper workbench *soon* only to discover 2 years later I’m still on that janky legs-cut-off workbench ;) Soooo looking forward to this new «season» of sorts, you’re now in the country where *everything* is available; tools, materials, weird things, old stuff that can be repurposed, old gas pumps, vending machines and what not - gotta love europe for all it’s quirkyness, but the US … is a place of it’s own - congrats on the «family reunion» and really looking forward to this new chapter :)

I love looking at a pile of unwanted, seemingly unrelated material and seeing the beginning of something; then just reaching in and making something out of it. Knowing how the idea started with not much at all and then blending together ideas as I go is so satisfying, especially when the blurry vision I have at the start is not at all what I end up with. I don't have the tools, funds, or skills to do it as much as I'd like to, so watching you do it is a great substitute! You probably already know about it, but the Habitat for Humanity Re-stores have been fantastic for me as I've spent the last year completely re-building an old camper trailer. I'm still in the process of finishing it, even though I met the goal of getting it ready to go see the recent solar eclipse. With new wood sooooo expensive, getting old maple, oak, and other wood scraps, and even entire cabinets, has made this doable for me. I visit the two near me regularly.

I love your sensible sized pickup truck. The average size American pickup trucks are just insane.

I've always liked the creative process of "intuitive woodworking". It's so much more freeing than building from a plan. Both have their place though.

When we built our cabin, the previous partially-built one had collapsed. Before we could use a new nail, dad had us collect and straighten the used nails littered around the property. This was before there were screws. I still straighten out the old before using a new one.

Get a jackets system set up and see if a swamp cooler would work in your shop. Less electricity to run and cools things significantly but the down side and up side is it adds humidity. I can’t wait to see your projects.

Yay! New shop! Please consider ac or a swamp cooler asap! I'm a California native about 100 miles from your shop (sorry I recognized the landmarks!) and I'm at a higher elevation and I'm already thinking of setting my swamp cooler in my much smaller shop. Consider the best insulation you can manage for that metal shop. Not fiberglass, wet and rodents will make short work of it. Maybe double bubble or unclosed foam board? Thank you for your posts! You keep me inspired to keep creating 😊

Insulate with whatever you can find. Install a fan. It uses little to no power but is the most efficient way to start cooking down your house. Passive housing design is where its at. Especially if you want to think about window place.ent or buikding eaves around the main door, to help keep your cool. Also think about using greens and minimising concrete / hot surfaces.

Laura, I think this project is awesome! I love seeing you start fresh, and everything that takes as a beginner creative. I would love to see cost breakdowns of what it takes to do this. Such as renting the space, ordering the saw stop. Would be helpful to see how much that takes, even if it's in the expensive market of LA.
