After 6 months of use, I have finally tested again my NORTIV 8 Ankle High Hiking Boots for waterproofness. To my surprise, they failed miserably. Pity, because they are really comfortable and warm, with a good ankle support, and incredibly affordable.
They come with water repellent materials on the surface and this is basically the only waterproofness they have. But this stuff washes out quickly, and after that boots will absorb water if exposed to it for several minutes or so. You will notice this only when it is too late. They are basically useless for hiking in the rain. #hiking #hikingboots #backpacking

My philosophy is that the words "waterproof" and "footwear" don't go together well. Waterproof treatments wear off quickly and waterproof membranes get abraded by dirt and dust that makes its way into the fabric (and it's impossible to clean them in the way that waterproof membranes need). The best options are full leather boots that are properly treated or non-waterproof boots / shoes paired with waterproof membrane socks (which can be cleaned and are only worn when needed which limits their exposure to dirt).

Thank you for the comment. I would agree about full leather boots, my experience with such a type has always been very good. As for the waterproof socks, I have no experience of that kind so cannot say much but it sounds reasonable.

On point. To be fair to Nortiiv 8, they aren’t warranting their boots to be waterproof forever and its up to the user to maintain their boots to get what they expect out of them. You can’t expect too much also from a budget pair of Chinese-made hiking boots. I would say for urban and casual hiking, they fit the bill. If you’re going to do any kind of technical or strenuous hiking, look elsewhere.

Imagine wearing boots with open sting hooks and your left or right shoelaces gets caught on it then you trip and fall down a mountain. My 92 year old grandfather fell in his yard wearing boots like this. I felt so bad because I was the one that got them for him. I don’t recommend boots like this ever.

I dislike hooks for a bit different reason, but I agree with you.
