You didn't state which neighborhood your apartment is located so I can only guess that it's near Long Island City, just across East River from Manhattan. That's definitely an advantage to many people. Donald Trump was wishing that he would make it across the river to become a big "somebody" in glitzy Manhattan. It's actually a pretty good price for a place like that. The only concern I have is how reliable your apartment mate is in paying the rent because you don't want to solve a major financial problem at the same time when you have to finish up your final projects to be able to receive your professional degree.

The reason Dorm living is more expensive is because private universities are running dog capitalist only concerned with grubbing money from students who have no choice but to pay for their halfway house style accommodations.

$3000 per month for a two bedroom apartment of that quality is good in NYC. In North Carolina, I had a two bedroom apartment for $1465 until recently. There are probably small towns and rural areas where you could rent for$1100 or less.

Wow, Dasha. 😳 I live in the north of Virginia (near Winchester). We live in a three-bedroom house that costs us as much as your share of that apartment. And it's a mortgage, not a rental. In fact, funny story about dormitories... I bought this house because, when sharing the house with room mates, it was half as expensive as sharing a single hotel-style dorm room, with another guy, on campus 10 minutes away. 😅 So at least that much isn't different from New York. And, 18 years later, I can still live here, though commuting 2+ hours to work every day by car isn't always the most fun.

The apartment is an older one. Many people want a new building and are willing to pay in my opinion the exorbent rent to live in such a building. I have found that living in an apartment is almost always cheaper than living in a dorm in the USA. In many dorms breakfast, lunch, & dinner are included. At times activities are included with renting a dorm such as free pizza ( but you had to buy the beer or wine), meeting with a politician for an open forum discussion, etc.
@VicariousAdventurer
@VicariousAdventurer 27 дней назад
That's what I was thinking. The "meal plan" can be very expensive, but is optional at some (But not all) universities. You sometimes have to be careful to unbundle this. Some dorms have had kitchens, while others have not. So, if one has no meal plan, it is smart to make sure the dorm has a kitchen.

When I lived in NY in 2013/14 I rented a small room for $600. It was a lot, but didn't feel that crazy as it would feel nowadays with the current exchange rate. The rule was if I leave - I had to find another person to rent it for me. Luckaly it wasn't hard to find the one who would replace you in this subleasing. Basically it was some Russian guy who rented the whole 3 rooms apartment and he rented other 2 rooms. To find the room from the host was impossible. When they asked me when I came and how much money I have they hung up the call immediatly 😂

WOW Dari - I knew it was going to be a bit expensive - NOT nearly impossible 🤯 The amount of paperwork needed just to rent an apartment is mind-boggling, especially for foreign students. I am glad you found one, and 1,300$ is a reasonable price, 3,000$ is a bit pricey, but since the going rate for most decent apartments is about 2,000, 3,000 for a New York apartment is a great deal given the location. Best of luck finding a new apartment when you return 🤞😖🤞 A moving out vlog, you say? 🤔 Are you going to PIVOT, PIVOT? 😂😂 👋😄

Dari, have you been spending some time locking down a new place to stay with friends who will be living in the same general location as your school next semester... BEFORE you leave the U.S. again? This way you won't be scrambling to find a roof over your head when you come back to NYC in August. That would potentially mean far less stress for you. You might have better luck now since students may be leaving the area after graduating.

I would definitely try to do internships for your school for real world experience. I did one for my television production course. Trust me you really don’t know anything until you actually do it. Every big company does a few every year. I know the stock exchange does them, financial institutions do it. Think about it as real world experience really can’t help. During the summer travel around to different places and talk to businesses there to gain information about how to run businesses and how they started. There’s a new lounge in Orlando that opened six months ago that was started by someone with no business experience but learned on the fly. That place now has a six month wait list and lines out the door. It’s easy to start a business but hard to keep it going. He had to learn what it takes to keep it open. He’s changing up the place already to keep up with trends. He’s doing what he can like everyone else. I changed up my restaurant menu a bit every few months to keep up with food trends just adding a dish or changing a dish or two. It’s hard but it’s working somehow.

Didn’t ask for credit, income, criminal etc. So appearance that you refer to is important. I rented for 5-years and never missed a rent payment or bothered him. When I told him I was moving out, he almost begged me to stay, e.g., “I’ll given you any apt in any of my buildings”, etc. And almost everyday when I’d went out, I’d meet a different celebrity. "First Month, Last Month, and Security Deposit" - New Englanders (and NYC is too close to New England) like their rent fees. Don't forget to pick up the Security Deposit, which is refundable, traditionally at the end of a rental (provided they have not argued for keeping some of it due to damage, but then that becomes a small claims court issue - like "Judge Judy"). I have seen enough of different Russians' videos to know they pay "realtor fees," but I'm guessing that this is not refundable. Don't miss out on money due to an assumption that it is the "same thing" you are used to!
@VicariousAdventurer
@VicariousAdventurer 27 дней назад
Usually here, a property owner hires an agency to rent and manage apartments if they don't do this for themselves. So, you do not have to pay this fee, though this agency might advertise other properties they manage, acting a lot like a realtor.
@ronw8628
@ronw8628 27 дней назад
In my zip code, the rental agent takes a standardized fee from the apt owner, a percentage like 10% of the monthly rent every month. The renter never pays this 'fee' However, If you've followed dasha in europe, the rental agent there take the equivalent of a month's rent from the renter as their commission for renting the apt, or I guess whatever rate they make up. That's not refundable unlike the deposit. The law In my state is if the deposit is wrongfully retained upon moving out, the renter is entitled to treble damages.

@greble11
@greble11 27 дней назад
US surgeons’ salaries average about $35,000 per month, which makes the high rents a little less painful. Also, keep mind that the cost of housing varies widely between different parts of the US. In many parts of the US, a monthly mortgage of $3000 will get you a 200 square meter house on a 0.5 ha lot (including insurance and property taxes). It’s easy to get a distorted view of the US by focusing on one area or one aspect.
@solconcordia4315
@solconcordia4315 27 дней назад
I know the rent my son is paying for an apartment (it's not his first apartment, either) so I have a somewhat realistic view about apartments and their rents. Try to avoid comparing U.S.A. prices with other countries' prices. They are mostly exorbitant ! A better method is to take into account one's disposable income. U.S.A. wages and salaries are also usually rather exorbitant so that can ease one's price pain.

@@greble11 In America, a surgeon may earn ten times as much money, but in Hungary 90% of the population is insured and practically everyone receives full medical care. On the other hand, the subway in Budapest is clean, and there are no drug addicts on the streets, like in Philadelphia in the Kensington district.

@greble11 26 дней назад
@@sandor7594 I don’t think Hungary is a poor country. From the pictures I’ve seen, the architecture is grand and amazing. The point I was trying to make is that salaries AND living costs are much higher in the US. I think you are getting a distorted picture of the US. The only subway systems in the US that I have ridden on (Washington many times and San Francisco a few times) are clean. We don’t hide our problems in the US, and Europeans seem to celebrate our problems, but for the vast majority of us life is good. I’m not rich, but my employer pays for almost all of my health insurance, which is excellent. It should be considering how much it costs them!

Hit the Chinatowns for different types of Chinese as we are all different. The area around Macys has the best koreatown. Little Italy manhattan is ok but it’s lost its charm but queens is like Italy as they still speak true Italian and serve mostly Italian customers.

I remember how relieved I was when you finally found an affordable apartment! Making generalizations about the US is always risky. Quite often college dorms are less expensive than living off campus, but I think it’s more common to share a bedroom when you live in a dorm. I think it’s fairly rare grad students to live in dorms. Thanks for another interesting video.

The rent in Florida is so much cheaper. Like a grand less. You can get a nice 2-2 apartment for about $2000 sometimes less in places. You also can get everywhere pretty easily too.

Dari is already in a college program, so switching states will be problematic. Besides, rent is lower in Florida now because fewer people want to live there.

As a Finn I don't understand why anyone would want to live in NYC. Already in the 80:s a friend's uncle who was a New York cop called it the sewer. Decades of far left policies have made it even worse. Fantastic history and architecture but sad what it has become. I would prefer a small town in the Midwest for much more bang for the buck.

Cops often deal with the dregs of society so it's not a fair comparison. Different if he was a stockbroker on Wall Street making lots of money. It's like the story of the elephant and the blind men. Each blind man had his own concept of what an elephant is based on the part of the elephant he touched.

Misleading title.You are showing a $1300 room in a shared apt where you have to share the bathroom and kitchen with other people and you are not even in Manhattan.It's just the reality in NYC how overpriced everything is here especially when we add how dirty & unsafe this city is.People barely survive here on $3,000-$4,000 a month.

I couldn’t remember my rent so I looked through some emails and found a rental agreement for 2015 that was $1570 for a one bedroom in Rego Park Queens. 6565 Wetherole Street. Almost 10 years ago!!! Forgot the name of the place. It was a part time doorman building. Partly co-ops./ owners and renters both. I had a roommate who I gave her the room and I kept her rent at 40% so that when increases occurred her share would always be 40%. I believe this was our arrangement. I took the living room. I also had Q Dog. We had a foyer and a kitchen nook with a window and a table but our kitchen cooking space was smaller than the one in your video. I mentioned in my comments to your channel last yearish? how I arranged to get it - having worked for CitiHabitars/Corcoran the previous year. You did a good / very impressive job getting a good deal in a short period of time. Probably because of your experience traveling etc. Don’t stop learning. There’s always more to know in New York City apartment living. But I should reiterate for those looking for an apartment - having worked in Real NYC real estate - one of the biggest mistakes people outside NYC make in looking fir an apartment is: they know or heard of someone getting such and such a deal and they think they cannot get the same deal. This is not how it works in New York. Things change. If you think you can get a great deal you’ll miss all the good/fair deals. People can believe what they want. But like I said before, the goal should be to find a fair deal that you like and once you find it -put an application in immediately. Don’t wait to look around for a “better” deal. Or one like this one. The market is just too tight. Having an apartment in New f$&&@ing York City is an awesome accomplishment for anyone. Another fun and interesting video. Cheers
