*Out of all 7 Batman movies, Keaton’s had the best finale with Danny Elfman’s inspiring ending theme.* *Harvey Dent:* We've received a letter from Batman this morning. "Please inform the citizens of Gotham that Gotham City has earned a rest from crime. But if the forces of evil should rise again to cast a shadow on the heart of the city, call me." *Alexander Knox:* Question: How do we call him? *Commissioner Gordon:* He gave us the signal! _(Gordon unveils the Bat-Signal used to summon Batman. Vicki spots the Bat Signal and smiles...she turns to see Alfred waiting for her.)_ *Alfred:* I thought champagne would be in order ma'am. _(Alfred opens the passenger door as Vicki crawls into the car)_ *Viki:* Hi, Alfred. *Alfred:* Mr. Wayne told me to tell you that he might be a little late. *Viki:* I’m not a bit surprised. _(We tilt up through the skyline of Gotham, beyond the skyscrapers to see Batman standing in a heroic pose on the top of a city building looking up at the Bat-Signal projected onto the night sky)_

This was actually the first memory I have as a child. Going to see this. And you're right - I remember saying in 2008, "As big as this (Dark knight) is, its not the pop culture phenomenon that '89 was."

I remember the excitement of when this came out. I was in high school and a huge Batman fan through the comics. This was so huge that it was all anyone talked about. It was the summer of the sequel and Batman dwarfed them all : Ghostbusters 2, Indy Jone 3, Karate Kid 3, Star Trek V, Licence to Kill, Lethal Weapon 2 etc. Nothing came close!

Tim Burton is a master of the neo noir genre. I really loved his take on Gotham City. Also the fact that this movie was a revenge story and Batman told the Joker he was going to kill him in no uncertain terms. You will never see that in a modern superhero movie.

I was 15 when the movie came out and had been a DC fanboy til the Crisis and still read stuff like TDK, Year One and Killing Joke, so I was absolutely blown away. I was also a Superman guy. Until June 23rd.

Now this is what I'm talking about! I still have nightmares about the time our VCR ate my original tape! There are a lot of movies I've seen and can easily say can be "my all time favorite movie". But this and the 1990s TMNT movie are the only movies I cannot remember seeing for the first time. They have always been with me and I would never have it any other way. Yes! Apart of me is embarrassed to say my favorite movies are both "comic book movies". But it is what it is! Thanks for this!❤ Love to see a closer look... maybe at, TMNT (1990) in the future? *Hint hint*

This is great. Batman 1989 made a huge impact on me as well. Like you I collected all kinds of stuff around the movie: magazines, news paper clippings and the soundtrack albums. Batman was also my proper introduction to Prince and his music and to the world of Burton. I can't believe this was 30 years ago...

Batman 89 is fucking AWESOME and I never expected another Batman film (live action) to reach that level until Batman Begins came out and actually surpassed it. Batman Begins was a flawless masterpiece and I love it more than The Dark Knight.

Um, I have no problem with your obsession with the 1989 Batman. Look the Nolan movies were great, but when those movies hit the scene, everyone was like, "Wait, Burton did a Batman movie?" All of a sudden "Batman" and "Batman Returns" were forgotten. I am a HUGE fan of those two movies, especially "Batman Returns". Of course, my introduction to film music was Danny Elfman's score to "Batman" and it is awesome(which doesn't even describe how amazing it is). I too used to watch the Batman TV series, I too saw the 4 Batman movies and the Nolan movies as well. BUT I still think the Burton movies kick ass and are some of the best in film history. Of course, Keaton is my favorite live action Batman.

Here’s the thing... Michael Keaton will always be my favorite Batman. Batman 89 will always be my favorite movie! It is now and it always will be; followed by Ghostbusters as second. Here’s the thing...we’re all getting old. Robert Pattinson is now Batman. At this point...who cares? It’s Hollywood of today. We’ll all give it a shot, but again...89 is hard to top. That mood, that Gotham, that city with that character and darkness...it’s hard to fathom. Batman 89 is a classic.

I saw this for the first time (sorta-I doubt I was there for the whole movie) when it came out on video; I was 4 and seeing the Joker dead at the end scared me so I wouldn't drink milk, even in cereal, for awhile because the white colour reminded me of that. It was years before my parents found out that THAT was the reason for my anti-milk phase. Was head over heels for the cartoon a couple years later.

Me, my mom, and my sister, and my brother saw Batman at the General Cinema in Griffith. It was so cool. On the soundtrack, we got the Cassingle of Batdance first. And the flipside was 200 Balloons. Then we got the soundtrack. I got one of the dramatizations of the comic book. And that even had it's own Batman theme. This is before it came out, I remember seeing the trailer to the '89 Batman while doing my homework. I even remember seeing a special on Batman. 1989 was a big year for movies like Batman.

If WB can't see the BILLIONS they'd make with a BATMAN BEYOND with Keaton - they are truly blind. Not only would it bring back the 80's and 90's Bat-fans and give a proper 3rd film in the Burton-Verse, but it could also spin off into a completely new "future" Batman series that could become it's own thing, but steeped in the lore of the 89 film. C'mon WB, you can do this. Also - any chance you can upload that compilation tape? I'd love to see that!

I remember hearing about the "Batmania" of 1989, and the protests against Michael Keaton playing Batman. Sounded like one hell of a summer. I also had the novelization of the movie, but I never read it, even though there were some aspects I learned like Bob's last name being "Hawkins". Fun video.
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader 5 лет назад
Great video! I too could talk about the original Batfilms for ages and most today don’t understand the massive importance of 89. I adore the novelization and think all fans of the film should check it out. The new 4k version should be a big improvement in finally getting the intended dark look on home screens but unfortunately the new Atmos audio mix has replaced all of the original effects. (The Blu-ray audio will be an alternate on the 4k disc in lossy form it seems) Also of note is that older copies have a slightly different audio mix which myself and others prefer. The Laserdisc pcm and flipper dvd 5.1 have more low end and sound better I’d argue than the mix on the special edition and Blu-ray. Plus the flipper dvd is the last release of the open matted version of the film from vhs.

The Internet did exist back then. And though there were far fewer people on it. Almost of them were comic book fans. And the outrage regarding Keaton's casting was as you would expect it. What might be more amusing to you is the consensus choice on the Internet of who should have been cast in the role ... Tom Selleck.

The novel has the whole Smilex plot. Do you remember the Batcan? It was a limited edition Prince ST in a logo embossed snuff can. I worked at a record store at the time - Warner only sent us a few. Of course, I managed to score one for myself. They sold out quick and it was one of the few times in which customers became loud and violent because we sold out. If only they would’ve waited because eventually we got more (about a year later) as discounted cut-outs. We couldn’t give those things away! I also remember the FBI striking the fear of God into the indoor swap meet vendors dealing in bootleg shirts!

It's pronounced Bass-Singer, like one who sings bass. I love Keaton as Batman- not so much because I think he's an accurate representation of any era of the character, but because I find him so relatable. He's distracted, socially awkward, gets irritated by loved ones meddling in his life, gets his ass kicked a lot, seems like he became Batman because he's an eccentric weirdo and not because of training or trying to be a symbol. He's ADHD Batman! Probably the closest I'll come to seeing myself as Batman.

That 90 second trailer should not have ruined Joker's reveal. If they wanted "You can call me Joker" in the trailer then they should have made that a voiceover over another scene like when he turns over the Joker card. Also, it feels like the trailer showed a few too many lighthearted parts with a visual joke afterwards. Like they wanted to say to American parents "Hey, it's Michael Keaton. You're OK letting your kids see this". When, in fact, certain scenes in the full movies would regularly only be seen in 15 / 18 certificate movies, like the lingering over the freshly burnt corpse.

@Zaranyzerak Can you upload that VHS tape? I'm curious to see if you have any segments that haven't been uploaded already. I wasn’t alive back in 89, but I have a huge interest in the Batmania phenomenon of that time. The only way for me to explore that interest at this point is through old articles and vintage videos. I’ve started a thread on the Batman Online forum amassing as much of the vintage videos addressing the hype and anticipation of that summer that I can find. Your vhs may contain a news segment that I can include with the thread. If you’re not comfortable doing that I understand. Thanks for making this video in any case. It’s always interesting to hear about how this film impacted the world upon release.

*Batman:* Excuse me. You ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight? _(punches Joker against a bell and grabs him)_ I'm going to kill you. *Joker:* You... IDIOT!!! You made me, remember? You dropped me into that vat of chemicals. That wasn't easy to get over, and don't think that I didn't try! *Batman:* I know you did. _(Batman punches Joker in the stomach, knocks him through a wall, grabs him and punches him in the face again. Joker stands up, clutching his mouth, spits out a chattering teeth toy, and punches Batman breaking his fingers on Batman’s body armor)_ *Batman:* You killed my parents. *Joker:* What? _(spits blood on the floor)_ What are you talking about? *Batman:* I made you; you made me first. *Joker:* Hey, bat-brain, I was a kid when I killed your parents! I mean, c'mon, gimme a break, huh? I say that I made you, you've gotta say that you made me. How childish can you get? _(puts on a pair of glasses)_ You wouldn't hit a guy with glasses, would you? Huh?! _(Batman punches Joker over the Cathedral’s ledge. Vicki and Batman take a look, then Joker grabs them and flips them over the side)_ *Joker:* HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA... _(Joker looks at a gargoyle.)_ What are you laughin’ at? HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA... *Joker:* Here let me lend you a hand. _(Vicki reaches up, grabs Joker's fake hand sending Vicki falling and is quickly caught by Batman and brought back to the ledge.)_ Ahahahah, “lend you a hand.” *Joker:* _(Joker kicks out bricks from the ledge that Batman and Vicki are hanging onto)_ Ha Ha Ha Ha...OOOO, Oh they don't make 'em like they used to! Ha Ha...A HA HA HA HA Do they huh? Ha Ha Ha Ha *Joker:* Hey Batsy...Bw ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha...oooo hoo hoo hoo hoo hoo!!! *Joker:* Ha Ha Ha Ha HOOOOO HOO HOO HOO HOO... _(Joker’s chopper flies over the Cathedral)_ Well, it's time to retire...Feel free to drop in HA HA HA HA HA.... _(The Joker’s goons throw the rope ladder down and Joker grabs it. Having an Epiphany, Batman fires a bola. The Bola attaches to Joker and to the gargoyle. The pressure refuses Joker to climb the ladder.)_ *Joker Goon:* Come on! Come on! _(The chopper's counter-force breaks off the gargoyle and causes Joker to loose his grip. Joker, being pulled down by the weight of the gargoyle, grabs the final rung...until finally, the Joker falls to his death. Then, Batman grabs Vicki to hoist both of them back up onto the ledge, but the Joker's weakening of the structure causes them to loose grip and plummet to the street. Batman grabs Vicki and quickly fires a grappling hook, which attaches to the Cathedral, saving them both. They swing in the spotlight, bruised and exhausted...but alive.)_
