WARNING: There is some pretty racist content in this cartoon.
Released in 1926 by the Fleischer Brothers beating out Disney's Steamboat Willie by two years. The only copy of the cartoon that seems to be on RU-vid right now has a bit of the ending cut out so for historical purposes here is the uncensored copy.

Well actually I think this was supposed to be a gag. The animators and artist know that the teeth were already out in the first place, so to add more silliness they made Bimbo have more than one pair of teeth
@animatewithdermot
@animatewithdermot 3 года назад
When Bimbo plays the teeth like a xylophone, he strikes the same tooth in succession, yet he produces two clearly different tones. I mean, what are we to believe, that these are magic teeth, or something? Ha ha, boy, I really hope somebody got fired for that blunder. ;)

My Old Kentucky Home was actually made in 1924 by Max Fleischer, with the help of Dr Lee DeForest. The book Max's son wrote on him states; "Both Max and DeForest saw the value of synchronised sound for Max's silent bouncing ball Song Car-Tunes. Together they made several sound-tracked Song Car-Tunes, starting with the 1924 My Old Kentucky Home. Strangely, the public didn't show much interest..." "Max was disappointed that the experiment in sound didn't work...and he also had the satisfaction of knowing that he'd made the first sound animation". Basically, he ended up releasing it as a silent short because the equipment needed to play sound in theatres was too expensive and something that owners didn't want to invest in. So, you are correct! But, this actually was (technically) the first Sound Song Car-Tune. It just hit a bump in the road and had to be officially released as a silent piece, rather than the intended sound animation. (Sorry for the long winded reply, I'm doing a paper on the Disney/ Fleischer animation feud and I get excited about sharing information!)

Fleischer made this?!? The Popeye-Betty Boop-Gulliver's Travels-Mr. Bug Goes to Town Fleischer?!? Oh, my god. That makes that comment I made about Walt Disney knowing this cartoon existed even MORE fucked up! It's even worse when you consider that, a decade after this was made, when Gulliver's Travels came out, Walt said of it, "Are you kidding? My second-rate animators could do better than this!" He must have thought Fleischer Studios was inferior. He MUST have. Nothing against Walt, but... he MUST have.

Musical Doge, I dunno if I would necessarily say that Walt Disney and his crew would've used, or have even known about this film when they were making Steamboat Willie. Of course there's a chance that they, or one of the crew, did know about this film. Although, thinking about if Walt really advertised this as the first sound cartoon, being well aware of the existence of this one... that's kinda fucked up. I know Walt's is better, but credit should be given to this one, so that it could at least be remembered.

Just goes to show that sometimes being first doesn't always mean the best. For example, there were other animated shorts well before Winsor McKay's Gertie the Dinosaur, but McKay's short did revolutionize the concept of the animated short, influencing more artist/animators than the ones that preceded Gertie. This may've preceded Steamboat Willie in terms of being the first sound cartoon, but Steamboat Willie sure did revolutionize the sound cartoon, that and it was more ambitious, funny, and memorable. Becky Sharp was the first live-action film in Technicolor, but The Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind both revolutionized Technicolor films in 1939.

The same year, Warner Bros. unleashed their sound-on-disc Vitaphone format, and premiered Don Juan as the first film to have the music and sound effects (no talking). They would save any talking for their short films that accompanied the feature, just to show more what the Vitaphone could do. This and a few more films would pave the way for The Jazz Singer in late 1927. I wonder who was the earlier breakthrough in this case. Don Juan was in August of '26. When in the year was this released?

I discovered a few years ago that this is NOT the 1926 version. The Bouncing Ball sequence is from the silent version. The animation at the beginning was added some time in 1928 or '29 after Max and Dave Fleischer left Inkwell Studios following a dispute with Alfred Weiss. Weiss re-issued a number of the Fleischer silent Out of the Inkwell films and Song Car-tunes, adding new animation. TRAMP, TRAMP, TRAMP is another that was re-released this way using what sounds like the Power Cinephone sound recording process. These are inferior to the official sound Song Car-tunes produced using the deForest Phonofilm sound process. This is not one of those. This discovery changes the previously thought history of this film as being the precursor to STEAMBOAT WILLIE since it came afterward to capitalize on early demand for sound films. The first was actually MOTHER PIN A ROSE ON ME (1925).

@gabep5570
@gabep5570 Год назад
People have been making that argument since those terms were coined, and they will probably be saying the same thing about today’s music in 50 years. In terms of “classical” music, the only reason much of baroque,classical, and romantic music sounds good today is because of modern instruments and or a standard expectation of technical skill that musicians of those periods wouldn’t have dreamed of. I will say that in a few ways modern consumerism has taken some of the art out of music making, but only music that is made for the sole purpose of consumption reads like that. This isn’t a new phenomenon though, even Mozart and his contemporaries were subject to this. There are plenty of artists who always have and will continue to make music with real artistic merit, but music being an industry also means that there will always be artists creating music with blanket marketability in mind. On a completely different note, and I say this as a lifelong Kentuckian, this song and it’s racist history have no place as our State Song and there are so many options that are just better in every way.
