My Own Lawn Plans For 2024

Now that we are closing in on the end of our spring lawn renovations it's time to start thinking about concrete plans for my own lawn in 2024.
There is a lot of weed grass invading the lawn currently. So I will be carrying out a similar process to previous years.
I am also looking to do a fair bit more work in the garden, installing a new fence, taking out shrubs, getting a new shed or 2 and also potentially taking out 2 struggling apple trees..
Then the lawn renovation will commence. I'm still debating on the seed choice but it's either going to be a dwarf rye again, barenbrug sports extreme, or even a bent grass.

I think you should concentrate on renewing the fence and removing the shrubs. When that's done, focus on your lawn.

I would concentrate on removing the hedge line and removing the shed and just maintain current lawn as normal on a higher setting then towards end of season then renovate it after done all the work needed
@stanawayLawns
@stanawayLawns Месяц назад
I'd do a minor reno at the moment mate listening to your other videos your schedule looks under the pump right now - put a herbicide on kill what you can, cut it down and overseed where needed and top up low spots- if you restart it might just end up like this again pretty quickly in a new lawn and as you said its getting quite late to do a full reno. Then get your fence done as the main priority this year and re assess lawn next season
@Adamace1972
@Adamace1972 Месяц назад
For sure I would take the bushes out, get a nice fence up, be so much easier to treat the fence over the coming years, maybe a small border with some smaller shrubs so you can still get access to paint the fence

My humble opinion: The less clutter, the better. More lawn, less bushes. Proper fence. That's it.

Do bent and keep it at 25 mm so you only need to mow once a week. Rye will give you what you have now. Looks terrible in winter and by spring its all weed grass. Then you spend the rest of the year killing it off and seeding / overseeing and never really get it looking great anyways as it's shallow rooted and cant be mown low as a result. I would actually do a 80 fescue 20 bent (50/50 coverage) you could go 40% bent 60% fescue (75% bent 23% fescue coverage). I have now idea how you even sow 100% bent lol. The seeds are like dust similar to dry sand.

Total removal of trees and shrubs. New fence. Attractive garden area. A backyard filled with sheds is messy and unattractive. Create an undercover entertaining area with storage required all under one roof line. The lawn should be last and pick a grass that doesn’t need high maintenance. Looking forward to see what you end up doing😊

novice gardener seeded his in bents couple weeks back. i dont know why all the youtube lawn experts dont like fescues, i seed my lawn in a seed mix which is like 20% rye but 80% red fescue and it looks good to me, can mow it short and it stripes up. I hear that fescues produce a lot of thatch but a quick scarify once or twice a year is nothing. and i dont really think mine had much in it at all from last year to this... i suppose its not the easiest of grass to get growing as takes like 21 days to germinate, so maybe why the lawn experts dont like it as the rye can germinate in a few days.
@stevenbelcher5658
@stevenbelcher5658 Месяц назад
@@SuperChalkster Bent / fescue should take 7 days to come up in May. My bent came up in around 5 this year. It's slow to get to a mowing height though. rye grows up rather than filling in first. Bent / fecue will look weak and thin until around 6 - 8 after sowing. This means less immediate results for youtube. Also it wont die off a few weeks later a require overseeding so they cant do a renovation video of the same lawn every other week lol.
@SuperChalkster
@SuperChalkster Месяц назад
@@stevenbelcher5658 i have some results in a week, but some areas are slower especially shady areas and it is a 14 to 21 day guideline. i am far from an expert on grass species but before i over seeded i read up about the different types and decided strong creeping red fescue was best for my lawn as i have shaded areas, but also areas in full sunlight, and fescues do well in sun and shade whereas ryes do not, so it was the best type for me. and from what i can gather is bent will eventually take over the lawn because of its rapid spreading nature. so i wouldnt want any of that in my mix. as i want my lawn to be fescue, has some rye in but only about 20%
@stevenbelcher5658
@stevenbelcher5658 Месяц назад
@@SuperChalkster shaded parts are always slower. Mines in shade for 95% of the day in summer and all the time during the other times of the year. It still came through with full coverage in two weeks. When looking at a distance it looks fake lol.I added bent as shaded areas stay moist in the winter and it will help retain density. I went with 90% fescue as its the most visually appealing grass.

Hi mate you've got a nice little project to do, good luck, looking forward to seeing the end result. For me I hope you go with bent grass I know it needs more mowing and maintaining but it will be worth it, also most RU-vidrs it's all about rye grass and fescue there is not much content on just bent grass and the general process of maintaining it. I think it will be good for future videos. I know you have to weigh up the pros and cons and that is in most cases your time... will be interesting with what you go with. No pressure ay.... Keep up the good work. Looking forward to the next video.

I wouldn't re do the lawn, just renovate. Using that short style grass will take up too much of your time, and you seem very busy with renovations and things, so having to mow that every other day will be a chore. Why don't you try to revive your lawn by removing the crab grass ?. Personally, I'd lose all the bushes and the dead ish trees put new fence in and a nice border first. Nice garden renovation project. Love the videos. Keep up the great work 👏👍

After sorting the fencing out, I would go with something fairly low maintenance that would still give nice results. Creeping rye cut long? Nice dark green stripes, creeping to thicken up, and cutting a little longer would mean if you do miss the odd mow it won't be the end of the world! Bent seems a lot of work, and from the sounds of it you would like to be able to come home from work and simply enjoy your lawn!

Nice to see how your own lawn is doing. I love the look of ryegrass but fed up with how it thins out over winter and lets the poa annua take over. Decided to overseed this spring with strong creeping red fescue so hopefully it will give a thicker lawn and keep out the poa a bit better.

I'm with most of the comments about leave the lawn until you've sorted the fence out and got your new shed otherwise you'll have to much on the go.Apart from a mow it'll look ok for this year also give you more time to think about the apple trees. Think the bent grass needs to wait till you retire and not out working every day. 🤷‍♂️🤣 you might benefit looking at your footwear as I was always told wearing wellies doesn't do your feet any good. 🤔(was never told why🤷‍♂️) 👍

Take the shrubs out, put artificial ivy on a roll as a fence either 1m or 1.8m height ( depends on what privacy you want ) using treated 3x2 as posts every 2m . EBay sells them at £44 for 1m x 10m rolls. Repair the shed ( not difficult ) and move it closer to the house and put fake grass in the space from the shed to where the shed is now for Tilley to pee on. Put a 4ft picket fence made from roofing lats up around the grass to keep the dog off and use your skills to make the grass good again. Take the apple trees down but leave the bushes. £100 for the fence, £50 for repairing the shed, £400 for fake grass , £100 for the picket fence. £650 all in and your time on top. 👍

Mornin I assume your garden runs eastward??? (Sun on right) patio in the shadow. Personally would wait until mid September (you might have more time) - Clear your place for your new hut. (If you can spring for it go with something that looks a like a little chalet or pavilion (you're going to be looking at it along time) - clear all the shrubs down to a foot high trim them to be bush like. - when yo set your new fence put a 1.8 mtr base slab then set your new panels on them. (Will stop you 4 legged friend digging for freedom". - when you going you fence - trench a new electric feed in. Use proper external cable and stick it at least 18 inches down. - the newly liberated shrub bed on the fence side cover with weed membrane and cover with at least 4 inches of bark / chippings. ( in the future you can always plant by just cutting a little 'X' in the membrane. - if you really want to be a machosist lift the path and stick it in the shadow. You could put a nice curve to run across the front of you main hut. - if its getting a pain to maintain during your busy season. Get one of those "garden cockroaches" a robomower On the size of that lawn it will keep it bowling green good.

Hi Shaun. I run in to this constantly with customers. My suggestion: Strip the fence/border area entirely, even roots. Make it your own. Fresh new, what you like and want on your property. Even the shed! TIME TO UPGRADE. New shed with the amenities you need in your life. Electrical is super easy but maybe barter yard stuff with a juice guy. Typical relocate here would be $1500, no digging for him, permits included. (Electricians are allergic to shovels) then do the lawn, but KISS (Keep it simple st....) NO BENT!!!! Oh, wait, did I say NO BENT!!! High maintenance girlfriend there. Enjoy your property, don't be a slave to it. Cheers, enjoy your vids. Good luck!

Since you asked...here is what I would do if this was my lawn. Some of these I already did to mine: 1. Remove the shed along the fence line. 2. Remove the paving stones that are currently at the left edge of your lawn. 3. Remove all of the vegetation and old fence on the left side of your property. 4. Remove the two apple trees and the bushes next to them. Grind the roots about a meter below grade and backfill with topsoil. I did this to one of my properties with over 50 trees that were rotten or rotting. 5. Kill off the existing grass. 6. Install a new ornamental fence, similar to the fence you recently installed. 7. Install a new flower bed along the new fence line. 8. Install a new walkway adjacent to the new flower bed. 9. Install an underground irrigation system for the lawn and the flower beds. I have used Hunter and Rain Bird, but prefer the MP Rotator system from Hunter. With the correct number and location of rotator heads, the system will apply 11-13mm of water in one hour (about one-half inch) evenly over your lawn at a rate that ensures soil absorption without runoff. You might need three or four zones so you don't exceed the flow rate for your pump. Use perforated drip line in the flower beds on separate zones. I used to bury the drip line just below grade, but now I run it on the surface and cover the flower beds with fine mulch. 10. Level and compact the yard with fresh topsoil. 11. Reseed with the grass of your choice. 12. Program the irrigation controller to water every day for one hour at 0600, and ten minutes every two hours until 1600 for the first two or three weeks. Reduce the number of short watering cycles over the next three or four weeks ending with only the twice weekly 0600 cycle. The Hunter system will turn off when it's raining.

I bought a new build home 3 years ago and the back yard soil was full of rocks and rubble. The people that came in to lay the grass just compacted the soil and laid grass on top. The grass has completely went to weeds and moss and the soil is only 1-3 inches deep frequently when I tried aerating it. The yard is about 50 square meters and I would say about 1/3 of it does not get much if any sunlight. My question would be is it best to kill whatever is growing on the top soil, followed by digging down 5-6 inches and removing all stone/rubble, followed by adding back a fresh 5-6 inches of topsoil along with seeding and composting? All advice would be welcomed as I am lost with it and the mrs is constantly complaining to me about fixing it

Hi that is the best course of action in all honesty but bare in mind if it's also shaded in corners etc it will thin out every winter regardless and will need annual overseeding in spring

Hey great video! Just wondering for my lawn, when reseeding, would it be a better idea to remove all the dead grass with a shovel so that the seeds can grow only on the soil or would it be a better idea to plant the seeds ontop of the dead grass? Thanks
@LawnRight
@LawnRight Месяц назад
Hi seeds need to touch soil.. Can you buy or hire a scariifer/dethatcher? It'll rake out most of the dead stuff

It will be surprising how much mess you will generate and space you need with the other work. Plus you don’t need to worry about watering if the dreaded hosepipe kicks in ( you just never know! 😳).

Hi Neil extremely difficult.. Scruch it first with hands or tread on it with feet and try your normal weedspray but to be honest most likely roundup will be needed and repeated applications

My comment disappeared...anyway never short of something to say here goes.... Id remove the jungle to the left and replace the fence. I'd remove the apple trees and bushes which will open your garden up a lot and provide lots of sunshine. Oh and why 2 sheds when one will do? Id leave the lawn for now. I think you've got enough to keep you going.

@@LawnRight the one that Daniel uses defo dwarf rye. Not sure if it’s a creeping one though so that might be your difference 😂 I’d gone pure dwarf rye last year but Ive realised it thins out too much over winter so I’ve introduced some fescue to help that out. Probably something like 75/25 rye/fescue now, hoping that’s a decent compromise
