Fixing A Chafer Grub Damaged Lawn

How to fix a Chafer grub damaged lawn, in easy steps.
1. You need to deal with the grubs first however you can. In this video the customer purchased some Nematodes for Chafer grubs (like these ones on Amazon: amzn.to/43bilhX), and watered them daily for 2 weeks as per instructions. Then during the renovation I applied some Turfsolv (available here: lawnright.co.uk/product/turfs.... Both of these methods are organic approaches, as most pesticides are banned in the Uk, however professional users have more opportunities.
2. Then next step was to get everything cut as short as possible due to the fact that the customer would not be needing to mow the lawn for at least 3 to 4 weeks. A strip around the edges followed by a short mow.
3. The next step was to heavily scarify the lawn. I am using the Stihl RL540 machine which is semi professional but priced around £500 to £600. You can go for something a little less expensive like the Hyundai at around £140 (here on Amazon amzn.to/439urbv). It's electric but has solid reviews. The upgraded Hyundai Petrol scarifier has variable height adjustment for the better quality finish (here on Amazon amzn.to/3C04PSA), and would be my choice - petrol and variable heights of scarification).. Finally pop to screw fix or Aldi as they do a very basic budget model for under £70.. It'll take longer and you might need to let it rest every 30 minutes but it will get there if you're in no rush.
4. Then I carried out lawn aeration. I am using a machine. The Camon LA25 - a professional machine around £2500, designed for hard work, but you can find cheaper second hand models out there on eBay for example. if you don't want to pay out too much, you can actually manually aerate the whole lawn with a garden fork or by using a manual hollow tine lawn aerator. It does the same job but just takes longer to carry out. I carried out a side by side review of some of the best, here: • Testing 4 BEST Manual ...
5. Then I overseeded the lawn. Don't sweat this part too much.. Any lawn seed will be fine for most gardens. Just throw it down, or use a spreader. Don't let it form piles or clumps where you can't see soil between each seed. Although I used the hand spreader in this video (its called the handy spreader and is available on Amazon here: amzn.to/45M1WT5), some seeds don't easily flow through it, some do.. It's pot luck! A much better option is to use a drop spreader like I showed in the video. The Scots drop spreader (here on Amazon: amzn.to/3N1SKCF) puts down a good coverage. You do sometimes have to go over the lawn twice but its far more accurate, but will likely take a little longer than the hand spreader. In hindsight I wish I had used it on this lawn!
6. Then I applied a thin layer of compost to the whole lawn. If your lawn isn't too big, just grab some between your hands and rub it over the seeds. You will happily and easily do this in a short period of time. For larger lawns you might need some help. if you've got a lot of existing grass you can dump piles of any multipurpose compost every 6 to 10 feet roughly and use a brush or rake to work it back and forth, flat, and nestled in down between the existing grass blades without smothering the existing grass. If there is. a lot of bare soil, doing this would move the seeds, so you either do it by hand or consider something like a compost spreader like this Landzie one I used (available here from garden imports: www.gardenimports.co.uk/produ...)
7. Then I used an ordinary garden roller to press down the seeds/compost to improve the seed to soil contact. Finally an application of Turfsolv was carried out before a final watering in.
Other tools used: Wolf Garten scarifying rake head amzn.to/3BObhvu and handle: amzn.to/3odHSIj
Camera gear used:
GoPro hero 8 (available here on Amazon amzn.to/3oHrMql)
Amazon Tripod amzn.to/3MKhpua
Rode wireless Mic amzn.to/429yHq6

This was hilarious watching you fight the birds. Even though much of it was speeded up I just kept laughing at the cheeky birds. Great job 👌 P.S. finally saw one of your jobs a few weeks later this was brilliant so satisfying 😊

If you haven't already, are you able to do a video showing certain pests like the types of grubs that you need to keep an eye out for, how to check for them, and other issues that you should look out for as early signs of a problem? As well as how to address and treat each pest or problem. You could get affiliate links for products so people can buy the products you recommend. I could see the algorithm showing your video to anyone searching in Google and RU-vid on 'how to stop pests/disease in my grass' and be a long term popular video that's helpful for many years to come. I think it could make a great video like 'How to identify pests and problems that may destroy your grass early on'.

I carried out a lawn restoration on my front lawn after we moved in before Xmas and as spring kicked in realised it had been badly maintained. It was full of moss and weeds. I followed all the steps in your videos less the roller (which I did by walking on instead as rollers aren’t cheap for 1 use). And the lawn looks amazing now. All the neighbours are now buying scarifiers and going over their lawns. Thank you for these great informative videos.

Hi... Not nice what your family coping with at present, times like this we need luck and support.. Thanks for all you videos last Spring 2023 in NZ I followed your lawn scarify and aerate top-dressed and reseed and wow wow wow. going into end of summer here my lawns are green and lush with cutting x 2 weekly they are so firm and tight... Question should I repeat last spring process or my thinking a light scarify, overseed bare area and a light topdressing. ( brought a landzie, not cheap but easy application) Thanks Warren NZ. good Luck with your camper

Thats what I call an awesome job 😉 . What was the fertiliser you used after applying the compost before watering ? And how many bags of compost would I need for a 160sq mtr lawn if using a compost roller ? I'm stunned how good that looks.well done. Kind regards Danny

Hi it was turfsolv to help with grub issues.. one bag with roller could do 10 or so square metres depending how well it comes out the spreader

Hi yes all good and work fine but ideally the nematodes want easy access to the soil.. So either aerate or apply nematodes before the turf goes down

@LawnRight
@LawnRight Год назад
Hi you can definitely mow it but just go very steady and only take the tops off.. also maybe hold out a few more days.. in an ideal world we would have the new stuff looking pretty good too..I always try and wait at least 2 weeks after its come up

In my area, peat moss seems to be more available than compost, especially pricewise. Have you had success with peat as seed covering?
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 11 месяцев назад
Hi I know that Jack's magic used to contain peat as did a lot of composts and were all usually good for seed covering so yes if the pest is part of a multipurpose compost you should be fine

If you use fleece do you try and peg it so it’s not touching the surface or is it okay laying directly on top?

Hi..I just put the pegs in mine and pushed them half way down not fully down.. so the fleece has a little wiggle room that also allows air flow. So far so good..
