also for inexperienced bird owners (or visitors to bird houses), don't forget that if they don't trust that your hand is stable then they'll test it with their beak like Cody was a few times. I've seen a lot of people pull their hands away thinking it was a bite but in reality the poor bird was about the step up and was then confused! haha
ive never seen anywhere how to troubleshoot if your bird has stepped up onto your finger and then bites it while perching there. they used to be just putting their beak on my finger but it had turned into a bite what do you do in that situation
Haha when Picasso's on your shoulder he doesn't take his eyes off you. I can imagine in his little birdy head he's saying to you "Are you thinking about me? I know you are. Just look at how beautiful I am. I knew there was a reason you chose me. It's because I'm gorgeous. Go on, give me a kiss and tell me how great I am. I know you can't resist this hunk of love."
I\'m not sure but ,if anyone else is searching for how to teach your parrot to talk try Hopandar Amazing Parrot Helper ( search on google ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my mate got amazing success with it.
I'm so thankful, that people like you exist. I believe so many parrots have now a better life because their owners watched your videos before adopting them or giving them up for adoption. Thank, thank, thank you Soooo much! I'm always happy to see experienced parrot owners who give helpful advice and people who build big costume avaries for not much money.
when i rescued ronald he hadnt been out of the cage or touched in 14 years so when i tried to put my hand in he would flip out, so each day i just sat beside his cage with my hand inside the cage it took about 2 weeks but one day he just stepped on ❤ and i managed to bring him out of his cage and after that he changed and became tame and loving really quick, i got flapped at abd bite a few times befor the but perservering was the best thing ive ever done, he has a lovely free happy life now with lots of love and he brings me so much joy, so to anyone who thinks this is never going to happen my parrot hates me just be patient they will come around, and its so worth it xx
I think Picasso has realized that your behavior talking to a camera is weird and he is trying to communicate with you to see if you are allright. You said a million words.
i love how you explain things, ive watched a lot of videos like this, but yours is by far the clearest and most understandable, you always do such a great job
I just got my African grey a few days ago! He hasn't been handled in about six years, he came out of his cage two days ago (we got him Monday) and will take treats from my hand! Yesterday he let me pet his head, he still doesn't want to step up if I offer my hand but he doesn't mind it being near him!
Just read or / on your mobile phone , and let the bird come to you to see wot you doing , and have a treat / in secret to show the bird to have on your shoulder .....good luck .
Faith Lauren so Faith where are you at now 9 months later with your grey. We just got one on Fri Sat he came out of his cage and will let us hand feed him. But no touch. He is singing and making his noises. Last night when he went inside to eat we closed the door. He ate then put his head down and let us pet his head. It was sooo rewarding. Can't wait for more engagement . So exciting. Like yours Jake was neglected after his daddy died 2 years ago.
Today I brought home a baby budgie from a breeder. His name is Akoni and he is so beautiful. Akoni is about a month and a half or so old, and has been hand fed. If you’re considering a breeder and a pet store, the breeder is definitely worth it. Within 2 hours of Akoni being in his cage, he let me pet him. He doesn’t move much haha, but that is expected. I’m super excited for him to get used to his environment and be chirping all day. When it comes to his training, I do have experience as a dog trainer, which I’m glad about because my patients is pretty strong with things like this. I’m really excited to see where these next few years go with Akoni.
You are excellent you speak well you don't speak too fast you are clear I like your style and you are great not to have any music in the background thank you I've just got two new birds and I'm very interested in your style thank you
I don't think birds are for everyone, as a bird person myself I know what's involved in having a bird and how difficult it can be sometimes. Please be careful when considering a bird as a pet.
I am getting my Quaker Parrot tomorrow and I thoroughly enjoyed your video - its given me some confidence to be the best parrot owner I can possibly be!
Thankfully my 14 year old bird who was never out of his cage, ever, before coming to live with me, has never bit me. He gives me kisses & within 3 weeks had picked up my voice and always loves giving kisses & still hates stepping up & being in his cage. From the time I get home, regardless of what time unless it’s dark, his cage is unlocked & he’s interacted with & has become a cherished family member in less than 6 months.
Teach them free flight. So you can take them out and fly them. Get a bird harness first then gradually teach it to come back. This is the best bird owner to me not someone who keeps them in the house all day like this chic in this video.
@@Will0w_Th3rianPawzz seriously??? Not everyone can take there birds to be free flighted. Mine arnt because there are too many bigger birds in my area. Free flying is amazing and whoever does it is inspiring but its not always possible.
Awesome job on this one Marlene!❤ I especially love the "hands on" approach videos like this one. I'm sure many of your followers would agree that this type of video aids in their learning far better than one where a person just sits or stands in front of a camera and only TALKS through the steps. in a private message you mentioned this video might not apply to me since Santina and I are past these stages. However true this might be, think of Lisa and her bird Simba. This video is also great for retraining from the start if a situation like Lisa's comes up. I 💘 that you really truly listen to us on the parrot station and engagednotcaged then bring our questions, fears and concerns over to RU-vid and allow us the joy of seeing you and your beautiful birds while answering all of our questions. AWESOME❤AWESOME❤AWESOME!!!! P.S. check your private message for a picture of what I looked like after waiting up til 3a.m. for this video. Hahaha
Great insights Marlene! Thanks so much for your advocacy for exotic birds....they are so amazing, intelligent, aware, and devoted! Who knew? But we need to keep trying to ensure they all have the best lives possible since they are unable to fulfill their lives in the wild and naturally...interact with your parrots!!
when I got my birth on March 12 he was great but he got sick and he lost his memory and he got so aggressive I try everything and nothing works ca you help me?
I don't have a birdy friend yet, I hope to have a cockatiel when I have the space for one, but I have to say that I have loved watching your videos. Your love and passion for birds is so heart warming, I can tell you love them with everything you have and it is so sweet. I hope to learn everything I can so one day I can be a good bird owner. :D
We just rescued 2 10 year old+ parrots (an African grey and Galah Cockatoo) and both of them have spent way too much time caged. They are very nervous and bitey and this is the first time ive had an older bird. This video and others of yours have helped tremendously!!! Keep up the great work!
Great video Marlene, not just a set of rules but explaining why and when to do or not do something is so helpful. Plus having real life examples is so helpful. Thanks for this video. 👍
Love your videos, personally I've probably watched and rewatched too many of them. In this case, I brought home a new bird and wanted to watch this video again because it's 100% good advise. PLEASE keep doing what you do, I just wanted to extend some gratitude for the excellent parront tips. You are awesome, also I hope Picasso is okay, it was a little tear jerking to see Picasso again, such a sweet bird, I really hope he's doing okay. Much love!!
German Pet Shops used to sell 'Sprechpillen' or Speaking Pearls. Seed like additives to the bird's died, to entice the Bird to speak more, enhance its willingness to go out; interact; be more friendly towards strangers, and actually love its host when kept for long periods of time inside a cage. Not sure if Trill sells Sprechpillen these days anymore, as many other interesting seeds had gradually come to fall out with the common law. Apparently, Sprechpillen were first tested on French & British Courier Pigeons during interrogations of captured subject to find out how the allies were intending on winning the Great War. Sprechpillen were not fictitious, but to Birds their Lovers and Keepers quite real.
I feel like this is an informational channel for someone who wants a bigger bird like an African gray, a mustache parakeet, or a bigger bird like that. Now that doesn't mean that this isn't the only channel but Marlene is one of the many channels who knows a lot about birds. Edit: I am thinking about getting a bird so a channel like this or other channels that have good info on what bird is best for someone
I want to tell that you can read a book to ur bird. Or play with him or her and u can give ur bird food and water and good life.all these is for beginners like me. By the way love ur vids
My budgie, Dollar, now only likes the improvised perch I made for her which puts her just above and to the left of my head when I'm sitting at my desk, working on my computer. Otherwise, she (its a female) tends to just find some place like under a chair or table where she apparently "thinks" she's hiding. When she's on her perch and wants my attention, she now comes down and gets onto my hand even when I'm typing on the keyboard. If I don't respond, she begins pulling the hairs on the back of my hand until I do what she wants (usually, she wants to ride my hand to the TV so she can watch it). It's taken 60 days to get this far, for weeks I thought she might never adapt to living outside the cage at the pet shop.
Thanks Marlene. We both know this is a two way learning process and both the person and the bird have to learn from each other. It will be interesting to see how Dollar handles flying after she molts. I think she's going to be a bit longer before that happens. I'm sorry that the pet shop clips the wings of their birds, I definitely prefer birds that can fly around the apartment. Until then, she's learning to ask for a ride and even walks to near where she wants to be lifted up and starts chirping. Tonight she even walked by herself to the bedroom because I was "late" taking her to her cage for night time. :-)
Thank you I'm getting my bird Wednesday and it a Quaker parrot, It's been hand raised. This will be my very first bird and I'm supper excited and I'm watching all you videos so I can learn a lot and reading up on things to!!
I love your videos, you have educaated me so much! I was a horrible cage bird owner... some how I knew I was wrong but.. there was no You tube then.....I watched videos and came across yours and they made so much sense. Thank you... My dogs (4 large, well trained) , horses, (2 ridden in cool comps), chickens - just doing chicken stuff :) and keeping an eye n my 89 yo mum who cooks and lives life large (Eunice)... All in all, I think my cockatiel (Marvin) has won best from your videos....I have learned a lot, therefore I have helped him as much as I can. I now take him on weekends away, and my buddies look forward to seeing him... You have given me the confidence to do this.. thank you so much!!
Best video I've watched about bird taming! I'm getting a bird because I just turned 14 and I was kinda nervous about bringing it home and me failing at taming it, but I feel more prepared.
My LoveBird is very skittish and scared and if I let the cage open he'll just fly all over the place and hit himself so what should I do? Even if he doesn't fly all over the place how will I get him back into his cage? Please I really need help
Thanks for the remove the cage tip my new parakeet and I have not been making progress I've had her 3 weeks now and just want to cuddle her but she aways flys away back to the cage so thanks so much I'm excited to follow your tips and move forward!
One of my budgies favourite perches is on the outside of their cage, they don't really come out because I need more out of cage toys. The cage has a flat top but I can't reach it. XD
This was really helpful, my conure he steps up but he flys back to his cage. We only had him for 4 days and he seems comfortable. His cage door is always open and he goes in and out. But I will try taking him to another room when I spend time with him so he doens fly to his cage.
So im getting a crimson belly conure and this vid really helps me since its my first bird(my dad had a few canaries and my nephew a macaw and toucan) im so glad im getting one finally
Had my baby green cheek conure girl Mia now about a year she is so sweet with tons of attitude and even if I do something she doesnt like and she gives me a little beak I still give her loves then she goes rite back to being a baby she is a baby 11 months old I'm her first and only owner forever
Hi Merlene, you are making fantastic videos. I bought a grey cockatiel female bird from pet store along with a big cage and couple of toys. Its been a week and I find that she is not active. She simply sits on perch. Sleeps randomly during afternoon and night. eats sunflower seeds and millets from my hand if I take my hand closer to her else she ont. She is not making any sort of sound. Is there any issue with my bird or is it just that I am thinking too much?
This is a very helfpul video....but I'm wondering what to do with my bird whos new, about 10 months, and was OVER clipped. so she has no balance and cant seem to climb on the cage at all. She has lot of perches and I want to let her out but she just cant get from place to place.
I'm picking up my green cheek conure today. Should treat him with raw or roasted nuts? can I use sunflower seeds as a training reward? Any help is appreciated .
I got a bird back in January. The people that had him before left him in his cage for 11 years. He is very fearful of hands in or around his cage, but he will take sunflower seeds from my hand now. It's a very slow process.
my lovebird bites me so hard that my finger bleeds sometimes even though I did every step of the video and it's already been 4 months since he was mine but I am still attemptiing to tame him I'm planning on buying a handfeed lovebird as well maybe I will get more experience with it BTW love your vids😊
I have a cockatiel named Smokie. He’s 1 year old and is untamed and unclipped. I have had him for 4 weeks now. I don’t know how to tame him. He is scared of me and jumping away from my hands. Even if I put it outside the cage? He fillips out... :( Edit: he eats from my hand. Now he hisses and bites me. What’s the next step???? I’m lost Marlene help
Thank you for this thorough video there’s nothing like it on RU-vid I will try these techniques with my biting Black Cap Conure Túpaq “Túpy” I already do some techniques like holding him in a cloth, try to put him on a perch and play the step up game but I will try to keep him out on the perch stand from room to room and let him come out of the cage on his own etc I can’t wait to try these techniques thanks and MashaAllah sis
Hello Marlene, et al., I found you and your wonderful birds just last week. You are truly an inspiration!! I am inheriting 2 Hyacinth Macaws very soon. They are hand fed, 5 mos. old, one male one female for pets NOT BREEDING!! I have experience with a Cockatoo and an Amazon Parrot. I have learned and re-learned so much from you. PLEASE, if you have any helpful tips, I would GREATLY APPRECIATE any and all that you may have!! I hope I do not get a pre-written general response from you, as I did at another person's site!! God Bless!!
I’m getting a bird tomorrow and I went and looked at it yesterday and it got on my shoulder so do I still need to wait a day I’m bringing his cage home with all of his stuff.
Thank you Marlene. But my rose breasted cockatoo nails me when I put him back in his cage. Or on my shoulder happy as hell them later bites my face. Help, please respond what to do.
Hi Marlene! This video was super helpful but I'm having a few issues with my 8 m.o. Quaker. He/she was hand fed before i got him and then i think he was pretty much ignored in tbe cage he was in with 3 other quakers. Ive been leaving his cage open whenever im around and he eargerly comes out and plays on top. I can get him to step onto a stick, even handle him if i grasp his whole body from behind, he'll sit against my chest calmly. But no matter what i do, he WILL NOT step up. Ive tried all the techniques you described including keeping him low, positioning myself in front of something he wants
ThisBeautifulRomance Stay away from Macaws, Cockatoos, Amazon's and similar. They live to be at least 80 years old, are loud, and definitely not for beginners. Pet stores say that Budgies live 5-7 years, but with the right environment they can live 15-20. You can get a budgie for 20 dollars at your local pet store, but they won't always bond with you. I have a Myers Parrot, and while they can be argumentative, they're relatively quiet and easy going. (Most of the time). And whenever possible, #adoptdontshop.
ThisBeautifulRomance i would recommend a conure they are usaully fun and playful or cuddly. or even a parakeet, a lot of people think they cant have a good relationship or bond with it like a iigger bird but they are both wonderful
From what I've read, no to the Indian ring neck. I have intermediate experience, and I'd say either a conure or Senegal would be okay. My conures are okay behavior-wise for the most part. One has never bit me out of anger or fear while the other is cage aggressive and moody. They are both noisy and destructive. One is needy while the other is pretty independent. I've had them going on 6 years now and love them both but this video is spot on, so think hard on your decision to get one.
Just what I needed. I find myself getting frustrated at times with our progress. I always make time to take my amazon out on a daily basis. She's not comfortable with hands so I have a hard time getting her out with my arm/hand as a perch, but she loves to come out & hang on top of her cage. Rare & a BIG treat for me when Memín decides to step down or fly off her cage. That's the only time she trusts me enough to offer her my hand as a perch. I'm so glad I found your channel! & love that you point out different types of engagement. Although I find myself wanting more in response/bonding, I know it's important to give it time. Glad I found this oldie but goodie Vid 💚💛🐦💚💛
Tjeres a big problem with handfeeding the young birds. The biggest issue is that the get so much beneficial bacteria from their parrents feeding them. Handfed birds results in birds that may have a severely defect immune system even risking that is enough to say that it is a cruel method.
also birds are not dogs, it can also be nice to have a pet who hangs out near you and is content but then also likes to be on you. with alot of dogs they love you 24/7 and when your home you cant get anything done. weigh the pros and cons before you even decide to get a bird. for me we had dogs and when they passed my mom opened her home for foster birds and now we both have one we love. so it all just depends. (Mines a little mustache parrakeet) hehe
I have a rescued western corella only very young, i was told around 6 months and he is doing REALLY good but with the attention i am giving him for training because it is time consuming, my indian ringneck is becoming funny with me and is aggressive with the corella. I hang out with my ringneck alot also, he is constanly on his perch inside, we wistle and talk to eachother throughout the day. Would you have any suggestions on help my feathered friends get along.!?
Dance with him, you will find out pretty fast, some birds, like to dance some don't. George my African Grey wasn't a dancer he was a singer, Picasso doesn't dance either but all my other birds do.
Hi, Marlene, Picasso is so adorable! I'm so sorry he flew away. I hope he comes home some day or that someone that has him realizes he is your bird and you are reunited!!! After getting to know you so much more and you birds, I feel so sad but happy, when watching you with Picasso!!! Love, big hugs, prayers. Barb, Baby, Beenie :)
I have a rescue cockatiel and the bird hated me for the past 8 months. I definitely got somewhere, in the beginning the bird kept on hissing when I approached now he only open his mouth. Though I realized just now from watching this video I made a few mistakes. Like I didn’t know I couldn’t run up to my bird fast, I did do that. She’s paranoid, she’s aggressive, every toy I buy for her she’s terrified of, even food. But sometimes she does whistle and we have cute little conversations. I clean he cage, I give her new food and water everyday. I let her try new things everyday. I read to her and stuff like that. But I just can’t give her much attention because of school. Though my parents give her attention she just isn’t warming up to me. She bites my hand when my hand goes near her. And one time she was on my shoulder (I put a mirror on a book and tricked her to get on my shoulder) but she was just biting my ear like crazy. Please if someone has more advice
When I open the cage my parrot immediately flay's to on top of the curtain and keeps flying from a curtain to another. I can't give him attention or prove myself if he just wants to go up in the curtains what do I do?
i dont have parrots but i still find these vids helpful but my birds dont like to stay ontop of the cage they like to fly on things in my house and i have to grab them to get them back in is there any other ways to get them to want them to get them back into the cage
I even made a larger Avery so they can fly but the screeching got so so Badi had to put them back in smaller cage because the noise was so so so loud outside I was worried about getting complaints
I heard leave the cage open and I subscribed instantly. Thank you for advocating for their freedom! I look forward to bonding with my new girl using your ideas.
I have a question i open the door and let the bird out but he is not tame and out for now at night how i am gona get him in the cage because he is scared of me
