OK - I'm convinced Either Doug Walker improvised when he saw the cover and genuinely realised the image on the front really was the toy and changed the script when he recorded that real reaction just like when he was genuinely angry in his Pearl Harbour review Or - that was some of the Greatest Acting I've ever seen

The ending was clearly meant for a sequel. Dude was gonna turn into the orange monster, and the sequel would have the orange and blue ones fighting/chasing each other. Luckily someone had the sense to NOT make it.

Doug saying how in 2010 he was 28 really puts into perspective how much time has past. I think I was 16 when I first saw this. Now I'm nearly 30 and Doug is 41 I believe. Goodness time goes by so fast.

I think the ending is like the origins of the toy villain for the sequel. Clearly none of the cast or crew watched the finished product if they expected a sequel.

I think the ending would be better if this film got a spin-off show where the scientist went around turning other people into monsters, making the kid have to use his monster powers to stop the other monsters as the scientist creates a monster army. You know, kind of a miraculous Ladybug sorta thing. That might actually be a good idea honestly.😎

I was never even a fan of the toy, but I hate the premise of this movie very much!! It's a PET MOSTER, it's its name! You can also free it from its chain! So the movie should be about a kid who has a pet monster, not about him being turned into a monster, it's all backwards! It would be as if they made a movie based on Spider Man and make it about some kid having a pet spider!

Okay, I can believe that some little boy gets turned into a monster. I can believe Max and his siblings are more concerned about a dog show than what actually happened to him. But, the most shocking thing in this movie is that a young Yannick Bisson, Detective Murdoch from Murdoch Mysteries/Artful Detective, actually played Rod.

So, to briefly answer the film's ending and also explain why the "Monster" didn't resemble the toy enough, I read a comment left on a RU-vid upload of the movie. Apparently, the commenter knew one of the actresses in the film and she gave intel. So this movie predates the cartoon series, but was initially intended to be a pilot film for it's own live action TV series. Due to problems with the budget, mostly in managing the suit, the show was turned into a cartoon and rewritten. That's why the movie seemed so open ended, the scientist was intended to turn into "Beastor" and be the main villain of the series. Beastor WAS in fact the main villain of the cartoon. So that explains the creepy ending. As for the monster suit, apparently the film's production team did not have access to the toy which was still in development at the time and therefore didn't have good reference for their suit. Obviously, by the time the film's intro sequence and VHS box art was created, they must have known what the final toy would look like. Hope that all helps!

Wait, the exact same studio that made the My Pet Monster cartoon show also did the live action version?! In fact, right at 14:47 you can see the producers are Loubert, Hirsch, and Smith! Jeez, Nelvana just doesn't have the budget to do live action movies. Even Rankin-Bass did better with King Kong Escapes! DYK? MPM was created by American Greetings, who also created the Care Bears, another franchise brought to life through animation by Nelvana Limited.

This really makes me miss Angry Critic. He hardly *ever* gets this angry in modern reviews. I'd love him to take on some old 90's movies he never looked at before like Hackers and see how angry he gets from the bad writing and acting (though, I love that movie, lol).

Just look at this, it's seriously what E.T. would have been if no one gave a shit! 3 Siblings trying to hide an odd creature (who this time is one of the siblings) And trying to hide it from everyone except that one scientist, and think about it, if E.T. was done terribly, the kids would have went straight to the person who'd fuck them over the most!
