For IVF round 5, I decided to test my embryos. I'm sharing my PGT results in this video as I talk about my whole experience.
Genetic testing is a huge topic of debate among fertility doctors in recent years due to findings that PGT-abnormal embryos can potentially self-correct. Read more here: www.rockefeller.edu/news/3052...
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35413...
(Disclaimer: I am neither for or against PGT. Please talk to your doctor to make this very personal decision.)
Watch the video about my infertility story and how I came to Korea for IVF: • My Infertility Story |...
About me ❤
My name is Hellynn and live in the US, but I've traveled to Korea (where I'm from) to undergo multiple rounds of IVF. Being 40 and trying to bring children into the world is hard, but I also have a condition called diminished ovarian reserve so I'm doing back-to-back IVF egg retrievals.
Navigating this world of infertility is definitely a challenge - a million new acronyms, hormones and protocols to learn - it's a lot. So I thought I'd just talk about everything I've been learning for the women out there who have had similar struggles. I'm also happy to share info with anyone who is interested in traveling to Korea for IVF, since it's much more cost efficient + high success rates here.
I am treating this YT channel as my diary, talking about the ups and downs of my journey to motherhood so that one day, hopefully, my babies will see how they were created... with fierce, enduring strength and love.
I hope you find my videos helpful - thanks for stopping by.

I am 38 years old, going 39 this coming November I decided to PGT-A test my 3 embryos. One was a male and abnormal. The other Two were both females and Chromosomal Normal. We transferred one of the females and today I got a positive pregnancy test. ❤ there is hope! And although PGT-A testing is very personal I would recommend it especially someone in advanced maternal age.

Oh Sweetie - huge Sad hugs 😞🤗❤️ & lots of support & love! I too, have been down a very similar road as you know , I think it’s a different road for those of us who really struggle to get eggs and then to make an embryo and we don’t get to the transfer point , we’re banking if we even have anything to bank, which is really a a whole different ball game, we’re not experiencing that horrific loss that is partway through pregnancy but at the same time our sense of hope just gets so stomped out overtime from bad result after bad result after bad result despite doing literally everything that we can. And honestly it’s our way of preparing so that we can survive. And yet I suspect that you definitely have a better attitude towards it than I do. like me , you are driven by the fact that we both truly believe we can by sheer force, will it to happen - by doing everything that we can, and just by continuing and continuing and to help with setbacks, one step in front of the other …..which is a little different from thinking that things will be great, but it has the same end result. Initially, I was very pro PGT A testing because my doctors had all told me due to my you know incredibly geriatric, advanced maternal age blah blah blah (thanks guys) it would be a necessity. of course this was before retrieval so I thought I would get multiple eggs and embryos, and I would have so many things to test - Oh the joy. well that was clearly not the case . By the time I managed my one, and only embryo I was so pleasantly surprised because it was good quality. It wasn’t the best quality but it was five AB and I thought it’s OK. I’ve been doing mini stim, I’ve been going for quality over quantity - it’s going to be OK. And I actually felt a little bit of relief for me doing it in the states (even though I’m Canadian) was about 10 days between getting the embryo grade which had gone so smoothly and so well and they’d been so good about updating me and then getting my disastrous results. I had the trisomy 21 among with a host of other things, completely abnormal to the extent that I spent half a day in between sobbing looking up each and everyone of the genetic issues that my poor embryo had, which is not a great way to spend a day - my concern was that it had even more wrong things than most abnormal embryos (turns out I was not wrong). My doctor even said to me when I asked, he was amazed that it even made it to a day five embryo of this quality given how many things were wrong with it - delightful. Like you the day, I got the results I just sobbed , I sat in my tiny loft in my little apartment in utter darkness, bawling and watching ‘call the midwife’ because I was feeling particularly self-destructive. I also drank a lot of red wine while Looking up genetic deficiencies. Like you the following day, I had to head into town for my weekly acupuncture and red light therapy appointment, so I sucked it up, dragged my battered and bruised self out of bed, drove all the way into town and told the acupuncturist that I’ve been seeing since before, I’ve even started retrievals what my results had been, and the fact that my AMH had dropped even lower to something like 0.05 or less - she literally did almost a cartoon double take of horror and hilarity that someone could get such a terrible terrible result, and still be continuing. I didn’t yell, but inwardly I just seethed. By the time I went back for my final retrieval.(to date - out of money) and my resulting single immature, egg turned into a teratoma (which I think is a fantastic example of what you can actually will your body to do if you want a baby badly enough, you can actually make your own eggs self fertilize oh….the irony). my acupuncturist in Canada began calling me an ad that point I was just broken and I didn’t have the energy to call or email back or explain yet more results because I actually felt as though I was letting them down to and frankly I couldn’t take anymore judgment, or looks or anything I was just done. That being said, I paid the exorbitant fee to keep my horribly abnormal single embryo, frozen just in case. I know that horribly abnormal embryos don’t really self correct I had to get a mosaic that would have a decent chance of self correcting if I added a normal embryo to it from some sort of donor. I had decided before my final and disastrous terror home around this time around if I got anything, I would either freeze on day three or if my lining was good enough, which likely it wouldn’t be I would try to implant on day three instead of going straight to PGT A testing. Assured me that they would not dispose of any embryos no matter what the results without me having to sign numerous pieces of paperwork, which made me feel better, and that I could still transfer them if I wanted to. However, the cost of the PTA in US at my clinic was about $2000. It would’ve literally been cheaper if I’d had more. so I managed to find the money for another retrieval, which probably won’t be in the US since I certainly can’t afford it. I’m not sure what my decision will be. I think it will depend on if I get any eggs or if I get more than one or if I get more than one embryo either way whatever the results I’m not emotionally ready to let go. This whole process for me has been utterly hellish. I don’t have the family support (or close friends, or I should say they make things worse) I’m single , unemployed (Because frankly who can travel on a moment, notice into a different time zone )most of the time while I’m stimming I walk back from my clinic to my extended stay place and just wait for a late email to come in giving me instructions on medication for the evening or the next day, or any other bad news (it’s old hat by now) which may or may not include some sort of late and impossible pharmacy run and I cry a lot. But when I’m done self-destructive, crying or whatever else that entails after a horribly failed disgustingly, expensive, retrieval or lack there of I start working on a new plan because I still believe in the strength of willpower and someday somehow someway I’m going to make this happen whether God , the universe , or anyone else wants me to or not ! And I know that you’re just as determined as I am, so I have complete and utter faith in you ❤️💪🤗

PGT-A testing is a personal decision. I don’t think anyone should be blamed for the decision they make. Some people just want more security and closure knowing they now have a good embryo and can move forward. For me, I went through two rounds and decided not to test no matter how my doctor and her nurse urged me to test because of my maternal age. I just wanted to give all my embryos a chance (which is one per round). Plus, it’s more economical for me not to test. If I had 5 embryos, then yes I would test, but since I have only one, that one I will give him/her a chance.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience~ I did 4 embryo transfers in the States and am considering trying IVF in Korea next. All four of my FETs ended as chemical pregnancies. I ended up finding a new fertility doctor who gave me an earful about how I SHOULD have tested by embryos prior to my FETs... It seems like no matter what we do, there will always be someone to say we didn't make the right decisions. There is so much conflicting information out there given by doctors; I wish people would acknowledge that we are just doing our best. Hwighting!

So glad I found your channel. I am about to start my IVF and decided, for now, to go with a fresh transfer and freeze and test the remaining embryos (assuming I will be able to get multiple embryos). I can relate so much to how you feel. I am asking myself the very same questions you pose in this video. My fear is that I do a fresh transfer, it sticks and then I have a later miscarriage or even an abnormality that did not self correct and then think why did i not wait another month to just transfer a tested embryo? ugh, so hard. Watching all your videos now and hoping that you get your beautiful babies so soon

The grade is good when the result of PGT come it is 60% mosaic. The doctor ask us to try 2nd cycle but they will not discharge the mosaic embrio cause there is case someone not get any normal embrio after some IVF rounds, the couple try put mosaic embrio and it become normal baby (60% can also self healing). After 2 months I do again just got 2 embrio (the grade is lower than first) and the PGT result one is normal and one is not. So the grade is not quarantee. So dont give up, stay strong ! ❤

I’m not an expert or anything BUT my doctor here in the US strongly advocated for PGT-A testing, and I think you did the right thing by testing. And I’d be more inclined to listen to the opinion of my doctor than a rude acupuncturist or various members of the peanut gallery. We had to do IVF because I have endometriosis, though my ovarian reserve was normal even though my insides are a shambles. We did two rounds of egg retrievals and got three normal embryos from them (all were PGT-A tested -- we got one normal from the first round, and two normal from the second). The first attempted embryo transfer didn't stick, we have one embryo on ice for the future, and one was just born in October and is currently asleep in his bassinet -- he's healthy and perfect. I am about your age (I'll be 40 in March) -- hang in there. It'll work out in the end.

Thank you for sharing♥️ I am so happy for you that you were able to get 7 embryos your first retrieval. Those are amazing numbers. Is the 1/4 chance for euploids due to age? Wishing you the absolute best on your next retrieval as well.

@@hellynn_j it’s due to us being recessive carriers of a genetic disorder related to anemia. 1/2 chance of anueploid , 1/2 alpha thalassemia.

It was wrong of that lady to berate you like that. I would definitely make sure to do PGTA testing. Self correction happens with mosaic embryos. If they’re full aneuploid it’s best to discard.

Have you tried ovarian Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy? Maybe see if they have it in South Korea. Other countries have been using this treatment for years to help women with low ovarian reserve who are over 35. Sending you baby dust! Wishing you the very best!

Thank you for sharing this. I have not tried PRP, but I do have a friend who has POI who is getting it done now and seeing success! I'm now done with retrievals and waiting for FET, but if I have to go back to retrievals for some reason (knock on wood), I will definitely keep PRP in mind. Thank you for the sweet message!

Please dont torture yourself, embryo corrections are really really rare. So IF you succeed getting pregnant and not miscarriage, the NIPT might return with defects and doctors would push you for abortion. I know for one case, only ONE, that had correction of the embryo, and woman has to endure doctor pushing for abortion, NIPT telling her there is a genetic issues, next test (cant remember the name) was also showing genetic anomality's. At the same time doctors were telling her that if she give birth to a child, child would only live till 1 years old. I don't know many ppl who can go through this and still have a faith that child will be ok. I did PGT-A testing on my embryos just because I couldn't stand another miscarriage. Also, if this road close on you there are options for donor eggs, only thing I can tell you is that women with donor babies are only sorry they didnt go donor route sooner (me included). So options exists.

I appreciate your perspective, and I understand it. It’s a huge risk both ways.. testing and not testing. Both have pros and cons, and I can completely relate to not wanting another miscarriage. Also regarding DE, I will consider that when all other options are exhausted but as of now I have seven embryos on ice so I will try those first. Please wish me good luck.. transfer is in a few weeks🙂♥️

@@hellynn_j I wish you all the possible luck in next transfers!! I could recommend, from my experience, as preparation for transfer: drinking a lot of worm water, L-arginine (for endometrium growth), acupuncture (of course) and if there is an issue with implantation check with your doctors whats his/her opinion on taking small amount (from me it was 5 mg) of pronison (Corticosteroid) or something similar to reduce your immune system response (sometimes immune system can attack embryo). Good luck, 7 embryos are good number and I hope for the best ❤! ***sprinkle baby dust, sprinkle baby dust****

I had my eggs retrieved a week ago and finally decided to test them after a lot of back and forth thoughts. The result hasn’t come back. I am wondering, if I have a mosaic egg, whether I can still keep and transfer it instead of discarding it. It of course depends on the practice of each provider, but if that’s possible, PGT can help identify the best embryo and we still have the option to use the mosaic one. I learn that some doctors are advocating to use low level mosaic embryos.

Hi there, thanks for sharing this info🙏Yes, usually mosaics are transferred if theyre the only embryos you have but seems to depend on doctor and hospital. Yes I agree with you, PGT can help identify the best embryo so its great if you have many embryos to test. May I ask how many did you get? 😊❤️

I can absolutely relate. In my second round, 19 eggs were retrieved, 15 were good quality, I believe 11 got fertilized and only 5 got to blastocyst. Guess what? All 5 were aneuploids! I think till date, I am yet to understand the emotions I felt that day

Aww.. I am so sorry that you had to go through that. It’s such a confusing experience. I did a lot of research and realized that testing is wrong in a few cases, so Ive refrained from testing after this as I don’t make a lot of embryos to begin with. But honestly if I got five embryos in one cycle, I would definitely send them off for testing so you did what anybody wouldve done. Where are you in your journey now? Holding hope for you.

I got my results back and idk if I should go for another round. I got 4 euploids with the following grade: 3B-b-, 4Bb, and two 4B-b- -. Not sure why they grade with caps and littles and minus signs.

Thank you for the sharing.. I hope u soon will have a good new and be a mom. I also in IVF, in my side doctor recommend to have PGT. For 1st cycle i just got one embrio. ❤
