Today, I’m sharing how much IVF costs in the USA vs Korea, where I traveled to for treatments. Last year, I had a total of 7 back to back egg retrievals because I have diminished ovarian reserve... I needed affordable, back to back treatments for IVF with low AMH. I just received a medical receipt from the hospital for FSA reimbursement, so I thought it’d be great if I can share how much I paid last year!
After facing astronomical quotes and long wait times in California, I decided to explore my options in Korea. In this video, I break down the costs, reveal how government support and healthcare coverage transformed my expenses, and compare it to what I would have paid in the U.S.
I discuss everything from how much I was quoted for IVF in California to the significantly lower prices for IVF abroad in Korea, including how much it would cost for non-Koreans who don’t have coverage. If you're struggling with low AMH and considering back-to-back IVF cycles, I hope this information can guide you.

My name is Hellynn and I live in the US, but I've traveled to Korea (where I'm from) to undergo multiple rounds of IVF. Being 40+ and trying to bring children into the world is hard, but I also have a condition called diminished ovarian reserve, so I've done back-to-back IVF egg retrievals and now have moved onto transfers after banking some embryos.
Navigating this world of infertility is definitely a challenge - a million new acronyms, hormones and protocols to learn - it's a lot. So I thought I'd just talk about everything I've been learning for the women out there who have had similar struggles. I'm also happy to share info with anyone who is interested in traveling to Korea for IVF, since it's much more cost efficient + high success rates here.
I am treating this channel as my diary, talking about the ups and downs of my journey to motherhood so that one day, hopefully, my babies will see how they were created... with fierce, enduring strength and love.

Thanks for sharing and help so much people. A lot of places in Europe are good to have cheaper ART than in US. For exemple, in Spain it’s between 2000- 3000 euros for an egg retrieval and between 4000 and 8000 euros for an IVF (depends of the method and the testing of the embryo or not). In Czech Republic it’s cheaper.

Yes I have heard Europe is also great, I know a lot of people who went to Greece or Germany! Bloom Korea only guides women to Korea for IVF so I don't know the details of getting IVF in Europe but have heard good things. 🙂

Im 39 and currently going through two cycles at SGF in Atlanta. $24,500+ $7,000 meds per cycle. Pre exams $550 covered by health insurance. I haven’t seen my RE since my first consultation😭 Im Korean and don’t have insurance in Korea, but I will definitely go to Korea after my second egg retrieval. This video helps me a lot!!

I’m also doing IVF as we thought it’s efficient and cost effective compared to US! My husband is Korean but I’m not a Korean national, and didn’t get a visa to get an insurance this time as we just wanted to visit a hospital to have a second opinion. But we decided to do IVF in Korea on our first hospital visit! Even without insurance, the cost was ~5k USD for whole one cycle until embryo freezing including the meds. I also got a quote from clinic in the US that is 12k-15k per cycle🥲 I saw some non-Korean couples visiting with translators in the hospital I go. Hope this info helps a bit!

@@hellynn_j I’m going to Cha Hospital! I came to Korea in March expecting a transfer but I’m now waiting for an operation to remove my ovary cyst before the transfer (what a bummer!). Hi Hellynn, Wondering if you’ve heard of platelet rich plasma for ovarian rejuvenation- improving AMH levels and egg quality? Also, does your clinic in Korea transfer with abdominal ultrasound or transvaginal?

Hi! Yes, one of the cofounders has gotten it done and saw great results. At my hospital they used abdominal ultrasound for the transfer.

Health insurance in the US is ridiculous. Costs a fortune and there are still such high deductibles…and people say this is the greatest country. What a lie we have all been fed. Thankfully my insurance covers a good chuck of my IVF (I live in Illinois) Thank you for sharing your experience in Korea!!

Hello Hellynn, I'm from Washington D.C. I am Vietnamese and currently I am doing IVF in Vietnam (Tam Anh hospital in Ho Chi Minh City). I have been in Vietnam for 4 and half months. I had my first embryo transfer 4 weeks ago. I did acupuncture before embryo transfer. I find it really helps blood circulate better throughout the body, especially blood circulates well in the uterus, making the uterus warm. IVF prices in Vietnam are same as IVF prices in Korea. I am currently 6w5d pregnant. I wish you success in your upcoming embryo transfer, very soon. P/s: I have visited Seoul many times and I really love Korean food, really yummy!!!

@@lynatran4391 Hi Lyna, Tam Anh Hospital is the best place in Vietnam to do IVF. I am doing IVF with Dr. Giang Huynh Nhu in Ho Chi Minh city. This hospital is famous for doing IVF for very difficult cases with few ovarian follicles. There are many cases have low AMH under 0.06-1.00 but they still succeed. A few months ago, Dr. Nhu helped a Vietnamese patient from Germany who was in the early stages of menopause find 2 precious ovarian follicles and she was successful with the second embryo transfer. The service is very good. I see many foreigners coming here to do IVF. Doctors here are very patient in finding the cause of embryo transfer failure and fixing it. I hope this information is useful to you.

IVF is too expensive in the US! There are some affordable clinics but meds are a whole other cost usually

Thanks for this it was eye-opening how much cheaper it is in Korea. If the overall costs are so much cheaper I feel you should reconsider using some of your budget to do PGT testing. I saw your previous video where you said you were not testing because there have been cases of embryos that self-corrected. There are a handful of small studies on this and I'd just like to point out the misinformation there is. 1) The studies are saying that for mosaic embryos which have the right number of chromosomes, there is a chance that they may self-correct and turn out normal 2) These studies are not saying that aneuploid embryos can self-correct. Aneuploid embryos cannot magically delete chromosomes or grow chromosomes and become normal. 3) PGT-A is testing exactly for aneuploidy. Now while it is not 100% accurate it is >98% accurate. 4) Ultimately you are saving yourself precious time (and heartache) by testing. At this point you have no idea why your transfers have failed - maybe the embryos were all aneuploid? You can move on to more ERs instead of wasting time on transfers that are going to be futile. Just my 2 cents

Yes, I definitely think that Korea is a great option for IVF and other medical treatments. Thank you for sharing your recommendation to test. I was never against testing. I am testing this round because I just have less time. I have to dispute that this is misinformation though. The way that it was explained to me at the hospital is that the PGTA results of the few cells that are biopsied are about 98% accurate, but there is no way of knowing that those few cells represent all the other cells of the embryo as a whole. For example the embryo might be a low level mosaic, but the specific cells that they pulled may be aneuploid and vice versa. There are many cases where mosaics self correct. My doctor told me this is the reason why PGT is not very accurate and there is definitely a chance that we discard embryos that might’ve had a chance otherwise. The biopsy of the few cells that are pulled is fairly accurate though, if that is what you mean. I think making the decision to test or not really depends on your situation and what you feel you can live with. Especially if you have DOR like me, you definitely think twice before testing, and that’s okay too.

@@hellynn_j The 98% accuracy is a number that already factors in PGT sampling only about 2-10 cells of the entire embryo, it's not that it's 98% accurate for only those 2-10 cells. I'm not sure how advanced genetic testing is in Korea but in the US with PGT you get details on the level of mosaicism and you can make more informed calls on transferring if it's a LLM vs a HLM.

@@hellynn_j In the majority of cases an embryo is either totally euploid, or totally aneuploid in all cells. Sampling 5-10 cells gives you >98% confidence it is going to be representative of the entire embryo. Maybe you might have an embryo with 5 aneuploid cells and 145 euploid cells but statistically, the probability that the lab randomly samples only those 5 aneuploid is extremely low. This is why there is such a high confidence level for tests if embryo is euploid or aneuploid. The difficulty only comes in if the embryo is mosaic. On embryos self-correcting - in the case of LLMs where you have mostly euploid and few aneuploid cells, the euploid cells could eventually take over. BUT the premise is there needs to be sufficient (majority) euploid cells present in order for a euploid cell line to take over. This is also why aneuploids cannot and will not self-correct, because there are insufficient euploid cells. Trisomies and monosomies can self correct but these will happen much earlier, even before they blast stage. Mosaics could be the result of these "self-corrections in progress". If by the time you run PGT-A and it is showing aneuploid with trisomies or monosomies, there is no chance of the embryo self-correcting. If your clinic has a genetic counselor I suggest you speak with them to clarify your doubts.

I got a pretty fantastic deal in MX too. I bought a package for 4 IVF cycles minus meds for $13,500. Meds for each cycle runs me around $2500 and if after 4 tries we don’t get pregnant we get 100% of our money back minus the medication. In the US we were quoted $22,000 plus $7,000 for medicines for just 1 try.

Thank you for answering. I had canceled 2 times circles for eggs retrieval. I got canceled on 4th check of follicles monitor. I got frustration and can not stop my emotions 😢😢😢. I got measure able for 4 eggs and clinic looking at. at least 5 follicles . My AMH is 0.8

@@saisue16 aw I'm sorry your cycles got canceled.. for some reason my doc never canceled my cycles even if there was only one visible follicle. Guess it's because my AMH is so low! With your AMH you should be probably able to get a lot more follicles, so hang in there! Also, based on what I've seen, The less follicles there are, the better quality those seem to be.

Thanks for this info. I'm also Korean who lives in the us, but an staying in Korea for ivf. I have national insurance, but my husband is American with no insurance. He also lives in the us and visit me once in 2-3 months. With my current situation, I wasn't able to get any government support. Do you happen to know if I can get the government support in addition to the national insurance covered?

Hi there, nice to meet you. If one of you is a Korean citizen then you qualify for government support. You have to apply for it at your district’s bogunseo office. As for your husband, it will be difficult to get him national health insurance, but it doesn’t matter too much because men don’t incur a lot of cost compared to us who are the ones who have to go through the procedure. Actually, the office didn't ask about an alien registration card. They just said since my husband doesn't pay the national insurance, we won't be qualified for the support. I don't know how he can pay the insurance, since he doesn't live here in Korea. BTW, I'm late 40s, and I wish I tried this in your age! 41 is still young and I believe you have a very good chance.

USA definitely has outrageous IVF costs. This should be covered by all insurances. I’m also looking into IVF and it costs close to $20k usd in NJ. Not as much as CA but Still an exorbitant amount! I was speechless on the phone with the clinics financial consultant. Luckily my husbands job covers at least 1 round of IVF. And I hear people applying to certain companies to work just for the fertility benefits. Ugh USA do better!
