1:53 Stipend Rates
3:25 What I make per month
4:39 Rent and monthly budget breakdown
10:16 Wrap-up
Hello friends! If you are new here, my name is Katherine and I am a second year PhD student studying History at the Ohio State University! I am a cultural historian of war, and my area of focus is France during WWI.

I love this video! You can apply for scholarships and grants to attend conferences for free or pennies (from the institutions holding the conferences). Just send an email asking if they have any funding available 8-9 months prior to the conference date. Your university should also have conference funding if you are planning to give a talk or participate in some way. This is a good way to gain experience presenting and a free trip at the same time lol.

I have since learned about department funding for conferences! I was able to fully fund my conference to Wisconsin later this month

This was so helpful, thank you! I want to apply to a doctoral program at OSU for the next admissions cycle and it's great to see that your stipend is livable. I'm excited to watch more of your videos 🤗

Thanks for making this video! Like you, I’ll no longer be on a fellowship (I start my GTA in August). I’m moving from a one-bedroom to a studio. It’s going to be in the same building as the one I’m in currently, so I won’t have to worry so much about moving. I’ll need to make sure I consider that I’m only getting paid nine months instead of the whole year. It helps to see another PhD student break down everything! 😊

Good luck with both the move and budgeting!! I think it is still livable as long as you a) set aside a little money for rent and b) apply for grants in the summer! I hope your first year is going well :)

Hi @Katherine Weiss, Could you do an updated budget vlog given the current inflation, if at all it has affected you? That would be helpful for incoming PhD students. Many thanks.

Hi Katherine! I'll be attending OSU as a PhD student in the Fall and your videos have been incredibly helpful! Which neighborhoods in Columbus do you recommend for grad students (affordable/close to campus/safe)?

Hey Katherine thanks so much for this video. I am headed to Columbus to study at OSU this semester! I will be there on a fellowship to start. I am wondering if you can share what withholdings I should be personally budgeting for or a good place to calculate this? When I enter into my GTA it sounds like taxes are withheld so I am looking forward to that haha. I am super stressed about managing my withholdings. ALSO if there is anything you can say about double taxation? I am not sure if you’re now a Ohio resident but I am guessing at some point you had to do taxes in both Ohio and Texas, how does that go? Thanks!
@KatherineWeiss
@KatherineWeiss Год назад
Hi so sorry I'm just now seeing this! I honestly did not end up setting a specific amount aside each month but just tried to be as frugal as possible. I paid someone about 175$ to do by taxes because it was so confusing ! I didn't end up paying double taxes because I didn't make any income in Texas- so I just paid Ohio taxes. I got money back as well so it didn't end up being too bad overall.

@@KatherineWeiss no worries I have surely been busy and am just now checking this! I should be more clear when you received your stipend how much were they taking for fees? Was it very month or just the first month. This month for me is prorated so no fees came out. They haven’t provided a clear answer.
@KatherineWeiss
@KatherineWeiss Год назад
@@caressagivens7109 They take it out every month - I think it was somewhere around $125 each month which included student fees and the percentage that I owe for student health insurance (the department pays 85% while I cover 15%)

Hi Katherine! Perhaps I missed it, but is this after taxes? I was under the impression that I didn’t have to pay for taxes, but now I think I do. Super confused and worried!
@KatherineWeiss
@KatherineWeiss Год назад
That is dependent on how your school department I think but yes I pay taxes! For my current role as a graduate assistant though all of the taxes come out of each paycheck, so I don't calculate that myself

I am interested to get a funded PhD admission anywhere in US, which university provides this, having less competition??
@KatherineWeiss
@KatherineWeiss 2 года назад
Many if not most PhD programs are funded- but they are all competitive. In order to find the program that is a good fit for you, look which programs offer your field, are funded, and then professors you could work with.
