Hello and welcome back to another Day in My Life as a PhD Student in History at The Ohio State University. Today's vlog is a chatty one where I talk about my work load, reading strategies, and the burnout I've been experiencing this semester.

Hello! I’m also in my first year of my PhD, and 110% feel you on the burn out haha. My discipline is Religious Studies, but I’ve really been loving your videos! Your reading tips are helpful, and you motivate me to structure my days better and work more efficiently (with the pandemic and working at home, structure kind of flew out the window for me 😅). I appreciate your videos and look forward to seeing more!

Thank you so much for watching and supporting!! Structured time has always worked well for me, but I admit it is hard in the pandemic!! Religious Studies sounds super interesting! Glad you are enjoying my videos, even though you are in a different discipline 😊

Katherine, I have a question. I will be a GA (for the first time) for two sections in the Fall. My registration is in two weeks and I do not yet know which sections will be part of my duties. Do they usually let you know prior to the registration period so you can avoid conflicts? This is probably a rookie question, but your vlogs have been so helpful.

In the past, I have usually chosen my classes before I have been assigned my grading classes! At OSU we usually submit our conflict time periods which include classes or other obligations. I think this is what you mean! Usually they will change your grading assignment if you have gotten something that conflicts with your class

@@KatherineWeiss I just received this reply from the professor for whom I will be a TA: "The good news is, I am typically able to work around TA course schedules, so at this point, you should simply go ahead and register for the classes you need. In the extremely rare circumstance that no one is available for a particular time slot, I will work with students and advisors together to ensure that we can cover the class without harming students’ ability to meet their program requirements on time." Guess I can go ahead and register!

Hi Katherine, about how much time do you spend reading on a typical day?
@KatherineWeiss
@KatherineWeiss 9 месяцев назад
Before I took my exams, I would say 5 hours? Now, it's probably only 2 hours max a day.

Hi! I would like to know that what is your average work/study time in a week ? I personally think that studying 6-7 productive hours for 5-6 days in a week will be sufficient to get things done. My understanding of productive time is those times that you really focused on your readings or papers. I exclude the calls, classes and breaks. However, I hear that some people claim to study like 12 hours in a day during PhD. What do you think ? I will be hopefully a history graduate student in the next year and I want to continue my academic life without being exhausted :) Thank you for your insightful videos by the way.

Hi! I honestly have no idea... it varies week to week based on how much reading I have and if I have any big projects. Also classes and meetings are definitely considered work time to me - they are part of what it means to be a PhD student. I probably work 8-9 hours a day M-Thursday, 6 hours on Fridays unless I have a paper due, in which case more like 9, and then half days on Saturday and Sunday. Hope this makes sense- I don't usually track my hours

@@KatherineWeiss Yes, thank you so much. Now, I have an idea about the general work load. Besides, It would be good to talk about the activities or hobbies that you do when you are not studying. I believe that they can either motivate us or distract our attention. You may make a video about this issue if you it sounds plausible.

So wait, did you actually read the whole 800 page book in one day?
@KatherineWeiss
@KatherineWeiss 3 года назад
Haha no if I have a long book like that I spread it out over a few days. I think for that specific book I read it over 6 days
