My Private Classes in Austin Texas - Oil Painting Education 

I highly recommend putting the time and money into this class. I did it myself over two years ago and I am still coming back to Mark's channel for reference. A couple things to keep in mind: 1) I took two years of comprehensive classical fine art lessons at Boston University. Mark's week long session is an abbreviated version of those lessons in a very, very short time. I'm not saying it is a waste of time to get your skills mastered at a university, however this is about as close as you can get to really packing in important and useful tools and techniques. And yes some of his skills are not "classical" but he says take them with a grain of salt if you want to do it another way. (For example, there is the never-ending debate on whether to use real life or photographs as reference.) Also keep in mind, Mark does not sit there hour after hour watching you paint every stroke. That's not the way it's done in any art classroom. Mark is correct and honest with you - everything you learn from him there, you can learn from watching his videos. So why take all the time and money to take his class, especially if he does not sit with you the entire time? Because you will have a hard time taking a week on your own and really working out the techniques on your own. Also, when you're heading down the wrong path say, blending paint on the canvas too much, or trying to get the exact color (my biggest problem) Mark is there to steer you back. Sure, it only takes him a few seconds to show you what's wrong, but those little course corrections can possibly save you months trying to figure out problems yourself. The techniques are easy. It's learning to put them to use for your needs and goals which is the challenge. PS - He's a nice and interesting guy. No drama or weird stuff. Great sense of humor too! PPS - Hi Mark! I'm still at it. Can't stop painting my dachshund and On the sixth one now.

I highly recommend scheduling to do Mark's private class. I learned so much in those 6 days and what I learned almost 16 months later is still in my mind every time I sit down to draw, mix or paint! His instruction is so practical, to the point, and not abstract at all. The workflow works!!! And the methodology starts to become second nature eventually. I still get lazy and skip the discipline at times and it's always helpful to know I can come back to the workflow and get it right. His class was worth every penny because the value of what he gives will last a lifetime. The online videos and tutorials are amazing, but having his 1 on 1 instruction is at another level!
