My name is Mark Carder. My goal is to eventually cover all essential instruction for painting realism in oil so that anyone can learn to paint for free.
Thank you for sharing this message. I learned to paint with oils when I was very young and I made some beautiful paintings for family, friends, and teachers. But the world being what it is, the artist was figuratively beaten out of me during my teen and early adult years for the purpose of directing me toward what is considered financially practical. I am 38 now and picking up a paint brush again.
Whats good brush work ? Textured What’s bad(2) ? Too blended , poky.. What is abstract brush work ? Random strokes Do we try to recreate texture of object? No .. random texture .. What’s a common mistake people make ? Oversimplify What to do instead ? Recreate what ur seeing but keep it abstract
thank you so much sir <3 this is very helpful I am studying how to color match my paint to my bags but I always but the wrong leather paint colors. i already bought all colors available from 1 brand and still the paint I get don't match what I need. so I started color mixing. but then I keep on failing I'm almost about to give up, and then I saw this video <3 thank you so much
I had art classes. I love to draw. Now I have written two children's books. It saves me from depression. Not everybody can do it, so I feel a litle special.
I have had another source of cracking that nobody talks about. It comes from the practice of gluing primed canvas onto panels. The glue seeps thru. You don't know it's there but you are painting on glue instead of the ground. All my paintings on panels, bought prepared that way, have all cracked up in just a matter of a few years. Some sold which I am horrified about. Of course the Canvas Panels maker takes no responsibility. Buyer beware.
Acknowledging that since photography became accessible to all, paintings - from throughout its history, just look different to me, than they might have at the time they were done. Mostly I view paintings in books and now, online. This is ok, but seeing the original is always much more revealing of process, scale, technique and so on. My favourite group of paintings are those produced by a small collection of artists, working in the 1880’s in England and especially, in France. These people obviously used photographs, but added a bizarrely realistic approach to representing light. The two masters of this style were Bastien Lepage and Dagnan Bouveret.
My father took me to a little shop of a local sign board painter in kabul in 1992. It was the time of civil war in Afghanistan, and as a 9 year old child, I experienced a lot of trauma. My school was taken over by displaced families, and there was no electricity and war in the streets. But I remember going to that painter shop and learning drawing faces and drew all along. I remember my waiting for my teacher to give me a reference drawing to take home and draw. There was no quality paper available. Todays office printer paper was a luxury. Me and my brother would by 10 pages at a time. Now I am 41 years old, living in Canada, and when I look back, I feel how important that art class was for me in cooping with what was going on in the outside world. I still google Maps the location of that little shop and wonder where my art teacher would be now, if still alive.
Thank you I was ab artist😊. I honestly have a degree and even had a license a a person who can restore icons and paintings . But our government had declared a law that restoring paintings could nit be a personal deal 😊
What color is the paint on your studio walls? I would love to paint my walls that color and may even try painting a picture after watching this video. Thanks!
Good afternoon! A few days ago I discovered your RU-vid channel and I think you have a painting style that I can somewhat manage as a beginner painter. I haven’t seen all of your videos yet, so if you mention it already, I’m sorry. Do you have experience in water mixable oils? A shop nearby has a 50% discount on their Winsor and Newton Artisan paint. I have only a little experience with acrylics, but they dry a bit too quick for my pace. Do you know if I can use my acrylic paint brushes I have at home already for water mixable oils? Because they can also be washed with water and soap. Or do I then ruin the brushes when I want to paint with acrylics again later on? Have a nice day!
You can load anything into a color and make it do what you need. The point is, titanium mixes a certain way. Iron oxide black mixes down into a warm grey- brownish. Ivory black has a blue undertone due to the ultra marine it contains. Its not that it's easy or hard to overcome, but knowing that it is there TO overcome. This is why artists need to know how the pigment is made, and what it blends down into, simply knowing makes using it easy.
Is that why when you when watch artists begin a painting they often paint the whole canvas a different colour all over first and when they do the painting that colour is not anywhere to be seen . Instead of painting directly on white ? I have seen that happen often when watching people on yourube or TV's Britains Portrait artist of the year in the UK is that better than painting directly on to white . I have often wondered why they do that .
Thank you very much that was a really interesting thought provoking video . Especially about the children in the concentration camp . Yes it's interesting to see when art is not allowed how much that affects people and us individually . The joy of being creative is so important whatever it is .
As a Christian, I believe that our creativity is partially how we are created in the image of God. We see His creativity in His creation and we desire to create as well. Doing art is also a great way to get your mind off troubling matters in life for a time.
is it the right mixing Prussian blue from French Ultramarine, and I add some Burnt Umber, because I wanna get dark French Ultramarine, but the Burnt Umber will make the blue color less, right or not? so what can I do to get the Prussian blue?
Mark, I agree. Art changes lives. I always wanted to paint and when I finally did in my mid fifties it changed my life. It felt like coming home. Now I’m teaching and coaching painting with oil, acrylics, tempera in realistic, abstract and also intuitive art. It’s mind blowing cool to see people change.
thanks for being transparent. I don't like AI images though. I think it is cooler to make it all yourself and light it and bring in things etc. Most people don't seem to have ideas and imagination anymore and I would think that AI is not a substitute for being unimaginative. Using it shuts down the imagination. That is what I contest. I didn't like any of the AI images that were shown. Use the imagination or ability to envision or loose it.
I think it can be like meditation. It quiets the mind and allows flow and inspiration. Athletes do the same when they get into the zone of state or flow. You know when it feels good it’s for you. I blame my mom for thinking I was an artist when I made marks on the wall as a baby. She may have manifested my career choice. Like a mom she said she was so moved it was dramatic - and then years later art appreciation was like osmosis and effortless. So I just knew it was for me. But I think as long as we follow our bliss we can do or be anything. Art is about appreciation which like love is the highest state of being so no wonder it feels good when we let go of the struggle and allow inspiration to flow. 💖
