I love theater and musicals, so why not talk about one?! Today I talk about the big problem I have with the Anastasia musical from the changes they made from the screen to stage adaptation. This is my first Movie vs. Musical Analysis, with possibly more to come!

All photos and videos are from the 1997 version of Anastasia, accessed on Disney+. Or they are found by looking up the Anastasia musical on Google. The clip from the Broadway show of the musical was found from Broadway musical Edits, link below.

Actually, now that you brought it up, after hearing your point, and as I was reading the comments, I see some people saw Dimitri saving Anya and her Grandmother as a way that he was courageous and selfless. The whole movie and musical we see him just concerned with earning the money, but that one act he did during the revolution was supposed to show us the real Dimitri. At least that seems to be what everyone is saying. And for that, I just made the realization, that they didn’t completely cut that from the musical! Except it wasn’t with Anya. The “In A Crowd Of Thousands” scene I think was the best they could do for their connection in the musical since they had her running with her family for more historical accuracy, but we do know he saved someone. Vlad! At the beginning of the musical, right after the Anastasia auditions but right before they meet Anya, we learn that Vlad was going to be killed, and although we don’t know how, somehow Dimitri saved him. They became friends and ran off together. It isn’t as precious as him saving Anya in the movie, but, it still shows that even through all the chaos, he was willing to help someone who needed it. The musical in my opinion was really good at coming up with more “historical” and “unique” alternatives for everything they changed from the movie. Thank you for letting my pick up on that!😁

I will say this, my main issue was the ending, I did not like the way it ends. For one thing, I feel like the final confrontation between Gleb and Anastasia was anticlimactic and I didn’t like how they have the grandmother and Gleb say “There never was an Anastasia, she was just a beautiful dream.” To me that’s like saying she never existed in the first place, like they’re saying Nicolas II never had a daughter named Anastasia. Now some people might say “no that’s not it, they wanted the musical to be more historically accurate and it’s now known that Anastasia didn’t survive.” Yes I do know that but this is an alternate history story (like an alternate reality) and in the stories reality SHE DID survive
@chelseabaker1994
@chelseabaker1994 2 года назад
I’ve imagined a different ending that I think would have been better that is similar to the way the movie ended (but doesn’t leave any lose strings) where after Gleb finishes his song Dimitri comes in (through the window, since Gleb locked himself and Anastasia in that room) to save her from Gleb, there’s a bit of a scuffle between them (Dimitri trying to take Gleb’s gun from him) but Gleb throws him off and fires his gun at him and he crumpled to the floor, Anya knelt nexts to him, thinking the worse, Gleb then turns his gun on her AND THEN says “I can’t. I can’t, I can’t.” And then the grandmother, Lily, Vlad, the press and police come in and arrest Gleb, Vlad and Anya are surrounding Dimitri who reveals he’s alright because he had a pocket watch in his shirt pocket revealing the bullet hit that. Anya reveals who Gleb is and the grandmother orders him to be killed but Anastasia says “No! Don’t kill him, please.” And Gleb asks why since his father helped kill her family and Anastasia tells him that he isn’t his father and he shouldn’t have to pay for what his father did. So it’s Anastasia showing Gleb the mercy she wasn’t given, I feel like that would be a really great scene. Gleb says that perhaps he was wrong about all the Romanov’s being bad people and tells her “Long life, comrade.” And then he’s taken away. Anastasia turns back to Dimitri as Vlad helps him up and asks how he knew she was in trouble and he says he just knew. Anastasia says her grandmother was right about Dimitri being a prince of character and that she wants to be with him and the grandmother gives them her blessing and the finale is Anastasia and Dimitri singing “At The Beginning”.

The ending line confused me. I couldn’t tell if they were saying that the musical Anastasia did not exist or if they were referring to reality. Like it was all a dream or something
@rebeccamiller2267

Yes, I totally agree that the ending is where it fell flat! I agree that if they had included Dimitri in some way in the scene with Gleb it would've added to the drama of a climax and a satisfying way to end their romance story line.
@naima9673

I believe it implies Anastasia has gone into hiding/ has not had her identity revealed to the public. Anastasia is safe with the Dowager Empress, and Gleb goes home to confirm she was not alive to put her story to rest. To support this story; the Dowager Empress decides to call off the reward and donate it else where so Glebs story seems credible. This allows Gleb to move on(, though he toys with the idea of Anastasia still being alive with the ‘beautiful dream’ line). He’s attempting to continue on with his perspective at the beginning of the musical. The Romanovs are dead.

I completely agree with you!! Dimitri finding out that Anya is Anastasia in the movie, is one of the most impactful scenes in the whole movie. It completely changes Dimitri from then on. I cannot believe they changed it for the stage!
@DragonRebelRose

I agree with you completely, the romance between Dimitri and Anya/Anastasia in the musical felt so...flat, and generic, and typical that I actually ended up hating it. And because *that* romance felt flat, the romance with Gleb the officer felt so much more...interesting and different from what we usually get for romance stories. I mean, it's the *villain* falling for the *hero* ! I LOVE that idea! And also the fact that he was originally played by Ramin Karimloo only adds to Gleb's personality and conviction with his feelings, so bonus points there. And it's because of those reasons that I ended up shipping Gleb and Anya in the stage musical rather than my forever OTP of Dimitri and Anya/Anastasia. I will always ship the 1997 animated movie version of Dimitri and Anya, but the stage musical brought up the really intriguing idea of an officer tasked with killing the last Romanov and falling for her instead, making him unable to finish his mission. He did it all to save the woman he loved!

As a huge fan of the movie and the musical, I admit, I came into this one a little defensive. Much to my surprise though, I ended up agreeing with many of your points. I feel that what they did with Dimitri was necessary for the realism (her being with her family during the murder), but it really took away from Dimitri's selflessness of the original film. And while I agree "In a crowd of thousands" has some pretty... flat lyrics, it's still one of my favourites, a guilty pleasure if you may. The addition of Gleb is what saves the musical, in my opinion. I don't miss Rasputin, and Gleb's whole arc is just so compelling, I love how he was written. "Still/The neva flows (reprise)" is the best song in the musical and no one can convince me otherwise. But yeah, great video, you got yourself a new sub! :v

So glad you enjoyed!! I can kind of see why they changed dimitri and his relationship with Anya but I just felt the writing for their romance was lackluster. But yes Gleb was an unexpected joy in this musical! Thank you for watching!

I don’t really like Rasputin in the original. Not just because of historical inaccuracies. Even without Anastasia living both are very inaccurate. It’s just that Rasputin isn’t a very compelling threat. He lost every conflict in the movie. He never posses a serious threat. He just looks scary. But not a true villain. Gleb isn’t much of a threatening antagonist but he’s written better.
@glassdinosaur

I mean technically in the movie Rasputin's curse is the reason the Romanov's were overthrown. So he killed all of Anya's family, of course he wasn't going to actually be able to kill her, lol.

I love that the big reveal was more of an intimate moment between Demitri and Anya, I haven't seen the musical but I've seen clips here and there and from listening to the songs, I would think you could begin to see the closeness of their relationship at around my Petersburg

I think after seeing both recently I have to say I like both for different reasons. If you're paying attention earlier in the musical Dimitri mentions he's only bowed to some once in his life and so it's a bigger deal that Anya claims Dimitri bowed meaning that was the one time in his life he did. So I feel like to an extent it works and does lean into the more historical aspect of the musical.

I love that they made it more contemporary and historical (as in realistic, not modern), however I still haven’t seen the musical to know exactly how much I like the change. One thing I’ll say is if 100% want to be in it and have a novelization of it.

the problem i have with the musical is that anastasia loses alot more of her sassiness. it seems like she doesnt know how to stand up for herself in the musical and that she just goes with the con. there wasnt really that much of a convincing anya to come with dimitri in the musical. it was more "hey i need to go to paris, here is my tragic backstory" and then she just agrees to go with them. her character in the musical just seems so dry and fake like a puppet, while all the other characters seem well thought out, and its honestly sad when its her musical. to the whole romance thing, i feel like her and gleb as a way better romance story than her and dimitri, which says alot coz it was onesided and was shown that way. if you watch the musical, watch it as a retelling of historical events and not as a live action of the movie

I have to say even if I love the musical to bits, I completely agree with you on the Dimitri and Anya relationship. I literally just finished rewatching it and the point where Anya yells at Dimitri for using her to get money off the Dowager Empress just felt so unearned. Like it's established at the start of the musical that Anya has some awareness of what they're doing and they convince her by saying if she is Anastasia, the Dowager Empress will know, and if she isn't, no harm no foul. I find Gleb to be a much more compelling love interest not because I want him and Anya get together but because there is actual romantic tension between them. I think the creators of the musical probably thought that audiences would know about Dimitri and Anya being endgame and just let us fill in the blanks instead of putting the work in for a deserved happy ending

Hi. I agree with what you said in the video. I love Stay, I Pray You. Quartet at the Ballet is brilliant!! I loved Gleb as a villain more than Rasputin. Still/The Neva Flows reprise was so haunting. Close The Door was such a heartbreaking song and a good choice to give the Dowager Empress more stage time. In the musical, I also love how they expanded Anya talking her her grandmother. It kind of reminded me of the reunion scene in the 1956 film Anastasia. It started Ingrid Bergman as Ana Koreff, Helen Hayes as the Dowager Empress, and Yul Brynner as Ana’s love interest General Bounine. I didn’t grow up with the animated movie Anastasia. In fact, I didn’t see it until I was around 18 or 19. I really liked it, but I’m a bigger fan of the stage musical.
@PunziesPalace
@PunziesPalace 3 года назад
Totally understandable! I think the stage version did a pretty good job in most areas! I’ve never heard of that film version of Anastasia so I’ll have to check it out! I do think Glen is a much more compelling villain with more background and complexities than the very dramatic Rasputin so I don’t mind the change of that really
@alexl.7668
@alexl.7668 3 года назад
@@PunziesPalace I agree. The older film was based off of a stage play. I think that if the 1956 version didn’t exist, the animated film would be significantly different. The 1956 film isn’t a musical, it focuses more on the con, but you can tell where Don Bluth and his team got inspiration for the animated film. The reunion scene in the 1956 version is my favorite! I think it’s cool how this fictitious story started on the stage and eventually came back to the stage, but in musical form. It came full circle.

I saw the theatre production last year back in march, and you’re so right. Anya and Dimitri’s relationship was so underwhelming and bland in the musical that they didn’t have that depth and romantic chemistry the movie had. I also felt that their buildup up in the theatre production was a bit rushed and choppy. I really didn’t feel believed that they were in love, like they were in the movie. Like where’s the banter? where’s the pining and the major yearning? everything was definitely more impactful when saved her when they were kids.

I feel so vindicated. I made a (bad) video talking about my problems with the musical after I saw it a couple years ago, and my main problem was Anya and Dmitri's relationship, and I go into a full rant about how they destroyed Dmitri's character (I was very unforgiving). I think it would've been better for him not to be in the stage version at all and they could've made a tragic love story between Anya and Gleb.

I fall in line more with the philosophy that if a musical is adaptating something well-known, I'd rather see a different take on the story in general. We already have the movie! I could always go watch it if I wanted that story with its lovely animation. Listening to the musical really made me desperately wish they leaned further into the political dynamic between Anastasia and Gleb, and that the musical just focused more on them as a whole. Gleb was just too interesting of a character to be just another addition to the cast from the film. I'd rather they cut back on some of the callbacks to the film and lean harder into this darker take on the story, personally. I do still really love the music though! I just needed it to go a bit further, for me personally.

@@PunziesPalace You're welcome I adore details like that! Also I 100 percent agree about the ways in which they cheapened Dimitri and Anya's relationship in the show. I loved everything about their connection in the film and how their pasts had collided. It made more sense the way in which their connection came up in the film because of course she wouldve been asked about how she escaped the siege if she were trying to prove she was Anastasia. And, like in the play, Dimitri can reassure her she is Anastasia because he shares the memory, it's just a much more compelling memory in the film. In the show it's kind of questionable and forced to believe they would have been talking about that parade at all. . . On, top of that, they also took away Dimitri's big moment at the end of the story, too, in which he risked himself to help her fight Rasputin. They could've done a similar thing and given him a role in the last standoff with Gleb somehow in the play? Anyway, I felt like both the thing when he was a kid and helped Anya and her grandmother escape, and his saving her at the end, made Dimitri a more selfless, likable, nuanced character. And they took AWAY BOTH of those moments from him. Yeah, those were my least favorite changes, too. Otherwise, he's usually played and casted very well in the show (Derek Klena originated him and was great!). I get they might have done this to empower Anya's character and have her escape/convince/defeat Gleb on her own, but they could have BOTH actively fought as in the film. Also, Film Anya is so much sassier and more empowered anyway that she doesn't NEED to prove she can win without help, so there's no reason for her and Dimitri not to stay and fight together. She doesn't need that edge to get audiences to believe she can take care of herself, she's already there. Dimitri should've been there at the end in the show, IMO. I really like in a Crowd of Thousands and think its sweet and love the sound of it, and like how it is used as a reprise in a later song when he's waiting for her when she's with the Empress (our paths will cross again? The way they did when you were eight and I was ten?) but I don't like how it changes his backstory.

@@caitlyngerardi9418 yes yes yes!! Agree with all of this!! Anyas writing was so much sassier in the film and made me love her character so much more. I felt that way about their relationship as well and I thought that maybe it was just Altomare and Klenna and the fact they had no chemistry because I saw the tour where the actors who played Anya and Dmitri DID indeed have chemistry, but I do agree the book and direction needed A LOT more work. I also was very confused with Gleb and how he "fell in love" with Anya and it never really read that was to me. It kind of felt as if he was tacked on to the story and not well developed because he was so militant and focused on his mission that at the very end, he not pulling the trigger held no weight and I was almost disappointed that he didn't. Maybe I need to watch his performance again. I just felt there was a lot of under development and plot holes surrounding he and his father and everything that happened with the revolution that needed to be fleshed out a lot more, and also with developing Anya with how she was found and how the Dowager heard the rumor, and with her being shot but still surviving, I just felt there were some things missing that left me confused, especially with the fact that the Dowager received a letter stating they were ALL gone. It seems they wanted the musical to be so different from the film that it lost a lot of heart and soul and seems like they just wanted a paycheck instead of telling an excellent story.

My main issue with the musical while I do love it a lot and I listen to it almost constantly because I love it that they took away a lot of what made Anya in the movie. Anya and they really just made it about demetri like we don't see Anya talk to her grandmother in that one scene, which I thought was one of the best scenes in the movie and because they were focusing so much on the love. Triangle they took away a lot of what Anya was. I feel like if that makes sense. I also agree with a lot of your points that they took away the meat of demetri and Anya's relationship Another nit pic that I have that I just need to say while we're here is that they changed the beginning song from soon you'll be in Paris with me in the music box to them. Just singing once upon a December which doesn't make sense in the context of the show because she has no memories and it would make sense if the tune stuck in her head but not the lyrics. I think the musical is fascinating since it’s a more accurate representation of what Athens and Flaherty were hoping the movie *would* be...though I’m actually glad they added all the wacky 90s animation tropes because it gave us Bartok, Rasputin and “In the Dark of the Night”. I have to agree, the musical fell flat for me largely because of the Anya/Demetri dynamic...and the specific cast I saw didn’t reaaaally help because the lead actors weren’t the best. They weren’t bad. They just weren’t...the best. And Anastasia the musical deserves nothing but the best!

I went to see the musical this evening and actually left the theater during intermission… I grew up watching this movie and I just felt they made it so drab and lacking that real spirit of the original. Anastasia as a character had no real personality, they made her “boisterous” in theory but none of that really translated into the courage and charisma of the original character. Kind of sad to see it watered down like that, and a lot of the additional songs weren’t compelling either. Not even going to get into the erasure of the romance either. I hate to be negative, but personally it was a big letdown for me. I just put my headphones on and listened to Journey to the Past as I walked the way back home :)

Rasputin has always been my fave Villian 💓 changing him to Gleb makes no sense

My issue with the musical is that it feels like it didn't respect the source material enough. Changing the lyrics of the songs, changing Rasputin to Gleb, adding the love triangle, all these changes just made it seem like the script writers either hadn't seen the original film, or were too adamant to put their own spin on it. Sure, Rasputin couldn't be literally falling apart on stage, but they could use makeup to make him look old and sickly so that he's metaphorically falling apart, and we could still have had "In the Dark of the Night," which was my favorite song from the original movie. Also, Gleb just seems like just another generic Soviet villain we have seen in countless other forms of media, while Rasputin was a ready-made villain who only needed a slight tweak for the stage. It's like what Universal did with Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, which was a prequel to the original film, but it didn't respect the original film enough to feel like anything more than a cheap cash grab.

Ever considered that the reason the musical is so bad is because it had an awful movie for a source material to work with?

I’m sorry you lost me when you said Rasputin was cut. That was literally the dumbest thing they could do. Thank God I didn’t see this trainwreck. Especially with the way they handled the love story.
