The people who did this movie also did their research. The clothing was pretty accurate and Anastasia's personality was like what it was in real life, snarky, resourceful, and a bit of a trouble maker.

Unrelated but dang I really wish this style of animation would be used again it's absolutely gorgeous,and more realistic looking than the new modern 3D style where most of the character's face is just huge eyes

Random fact: This movie came out when no one knew what happened to Anastasia and her brother. They only found their bodies after it was released.(In 2007) A lot of this movie was based off the speculation around her possible survival.

'Anastasia' is one of those rare princess films that uses real-world historical events; give or take a few adjustments for plot reasons. I was introduced to this movie long before I learned about the Russian Revolution and the downfall of the Romanov Dynasty. There's a RU-vidr called 'History Tea Time with Lindsey Holiday' - or Lindsey Holiday for short - that did a few video essays on the Romanov family, including the daughters: Olga, Tatiana, Maria, and Anastaisa.

I think about the historical reimagining in Anastasia in the light that I view Pocahontas. Both movies took great liberties with their respective stories and the history they were based upon. I’m going to be honest and say that I don’t know much about Pocahontas’ life compared to the movie other than she was much older in the film adaptation than she was in real life. I also don’t know the reasoning behind that choice other than to create a love story. But with Anastasia, there was still a lot of mystery surrounding her death and many believed she may have escaped. I think this movie draws on much of the legend of her escaping and surviving the revolution. I can’t understand how people can complain about Anastasia is so historically inaccurate but not say anything about how inaccurate Pocahontas was. Both movies were looking to tell a good story (that was appropriate for kids) and do so how they saw fit. If you was historical accuracy, watch a documentary.
@screamingcactus1753

People give Pocahontas plenty of crap for its historical inaccuracy for largely similar reasons. You can disagree with the criticism, but I wouldn't say people are being inconsistent here.

I still love that movie, it´s very beautiful and like you said, Anastasia was not a damsel in distress - Dimitri kind was xD - and I really liked that about her and the story :) I still think that they made Rasputin one of the creepiest villains, but fortunately Bartok made it bearable to watch because he was so cute :3 the music is still beautiful and I sometimes catch myself humming "once upon a december" because I love it, especially in the winter season :) so yea, I think it totally deserves the attention, and it´s nice to dream about a kinder fate for Anastasia, because what happened to her and her family in reality is just brutal..

The animation is beautiful and super detailed, making it easy to feel the vibe of the culture in every scene. There's some kind of mystery about this film that is hard to pinpoint, but it really enchants me. I have to say Don Bluth is a master of giving me this mysterious feeling in his movies. Some of them are misses, yes, but most of them really draw me in. Disney movies are beautiful and stronger in other areas, but none of them gives me the same mystical vibe as Don Bluth's. I love that we have so many animated movies from all these different studios. I enjoy watching them all, from the most obscure ones to the most famous ones.

I'd really recommend the recent musical adaptation, the costuming and score is simply gorgeous. And the lead actress is incredible. It does take a more realistic approach to the story of Anastasia, with the main antagonist being a bolshevik soldier rather than creepy undead Rasputin. And the romance between Dimitri and Anastasia is so sweet.

For a little context: the rumours about Alexandra and Rasputin's alleged affair were spawned because most Russians didn't know/understand the real reason Alexandra was so obsessed with having Rasputin around. Her son was a hemophiliac. Rasputin had saved the child's life (or at least appeared to do so) multiple times and he (Rasputin) repeatedly told the empress that if she wasn't kind to him God would punish her and her son would die... So yeah...

I hate how people keep comparing this to Disney. Oh hell they keep thinking it is Disney. I want the actual company who made the film (21st Century Fox). No disney film, maybe except for Humchback had this incredible animation, great music, great story arcs, and characters. I feel at this point Dimitri is at Mr. Darcy status. They both had iffy qualities at first, but redeemed themselves because of the person they liked. They both had their hidden talents and actually respected their partners (after a period of time that is). They are also insanely attractive. I never understood being attracted to animated characters until I became an adult and rewatched this again and went, “oh dang” and when flynn rider and jack frost entered the picture. I get it now. And with Rasputin, wasn’t he a seducer, philander, and a manipulator too? That is why they were so easily lured in by him and one reason why they did not pay attention to their kingdom.

The thing I didn't like about the most about this movie, was the fact that this WHOLE film was about a girl finding her living family, but then she immediately gives up the one thing she's been searching for her whole life... Because of a guy 😐 really? I'm with the rich grandmother who I barely know, who is really kind and doesn't have much longer time left 2 live, who I've also been searching for my whole life.

I think that was kind of the point. It’s not uncommon for kids movie to show the character what they need, their happy ending might not be what they thought they wanted. Anastasia wanted a family/home and thought her old life would give that to her. Instead she created her own happy ending/ family along the way. (She did also get her real family I guess, so maybe I’m wrong).
