The track saw was my gateway drug as well. It died 6 months out of warranty cutting mostly 3/4" material in my DIY shop. I contacted Festool USA about repair and sent it in. They repaired it and sent it back. No charge. They even replaced the base plate which was bent in a fall. My fault. Thank you, Festool. Unfortunately, on return, it was dropped by UPS and a piece was broken, as it was not in the systainer but shipped in a cardboard box with some newspaper stuffings. I sent it back. They repaired it again No charge. Unbelievably, on return, it was dropped a second time by UPS bending the new base plate. They really should pack the repaired tools better for shipping. So, I sent it back again and they decided to send me a brand new saw as a replacement. All on a tool that was out of warranty. Good on Festool. Merry Christmas from across the pond.

Bought a damaged Kapex off Craigslist. The nearest Festool dealer is 110 miles. We noted the obviously damaged parts and shipping costs which seemed to be $100-$150 plus $50 freight each way to the US repair center. The dealer said that part of the obligations of being a dealer is to maintain a fleet of Festool shipping crates. When the tool came back it was, as you said, Peter, in as-new condition. There was no charge for repair or shipping because, although I was not the original purchaser, the return was made, according to Festool's records, during the warrantee period. Pretty good, huh?

FUN FACTS: these brushes last about 800 hours speed 6 at optimal working circumstances(no abbrasive dust from environment/overheating etc) before inserting the brushes, you should first raise the little "ear" at the top and mid of the brush holder so it wont be able to be pushed away after some years you should really be carefull after each screwing and unscrewing because plastics tend to break easily. a motor should last about at least 3-4 pairs of brushes before wearing off completely. the motor is DOMEL and this one particullary is made exclusively for festool (As far as I know) when using brushless machines at low speed with these vaccuums, sometimes they wont switch on automatically due to very little power draw from the motor, when the motor sounds noisy and vibrating,1stly clean it with high pressure air, sometimes dust buildup make it imbalanced. hmm what else

Well that is cool that he can get just the brushes from Festool. When I had a Fein vacuum go down their parts description listed the entire motor assembly as a single part to be replaced. And of course at an exorbitant price. I went to Grainger and got a similar motor at less than half of what Fein had the motor priced at.

I am almost 70 years old and still change the oil in my car (recycled of course). I have been taking things apart since I was 4 years old. So more power to you!! It says something about Festool that here is a vacuum that is 14 years old and nothing more wrong with it than a pair of brushes. And you have been using it every day, on and off, on and off. I am surprised Festool hasn't made more of a point about their longevity in their advertising. Buy it once, use forever. I hope their newer tools are buillt as well. Happy Holidays to you!!

Thank you! It’s a solid workhorse if a machine, and to their credit Festool do guarantee spare parts availability for 7 years after the tool has been discontinued. Combine that wide a pretty wide shared-parts bin amongst tool lines, and they do pretty well. Happy holidays to you too! 👍👍

I wore out the brushes on my CT36 after 8 years or hard daily use on my CNC router. I decided to just replace the motor, since the brushes looked hard to get to. Easy to do, and gave me more confidence in it going forward. I think it was about $100 compared to $36 for the brushes.

We used to have those tools when we had a business making and installing kitchen cabinets and similar things. My dad owned and ran it. I have seen Festool and they are unlike other tools. They just feel so different in a good way when you adjust them (the tools that do have fine adjustments anyhow). We also worked with solid surface and that stuff destroys motor bearings. Festool routers are not affected by that quite so much. I forget what it is but it is something with the bearings in their routers that keeps the dust out apparently somewhat better. We had Porter Cable routers and that plastic dust got in those bearings and ruined them. It comes off solid surface looking like snow but that crumbles to a powder easily and it makes a mess everywhere without a vacuum. The only easy way to get that crap out of the shop is a leaf blower and you might prefer battery powered or electric for that.
@stevecarlisle3323

It's a Gimick to get you buying their tools. In Canada we tried Festool chop saws, be cause on the safety standards. They have strange ergonomics, and the motors burned out quickly, and repairs took forever. We used these saws in the movie industry, so commercial use. After 6 months we put them in storage, and moved back to DeWalt, a great saw , twice as good, at half the price, and you can buy them everywhere !

Glad Festool has such a great service. Because out of 5 Festools I had to send in 3 of them within 1 year of use. And I baby my stuff... 😂 TS55 was out of square out of the box, came back the same as it was within tolerance. KS120 had scratchmarks on one rail and therefore isn't running smooth. Saw came back checked, nothing replaced. Now my vac is up in the smoke, waiting for the outcome...

You know you've got to be the most polite contractor I've ever heard speak. And I've been a contractor for 34 years, so I know a lot of my fellow contractors. Anyways, I just wanted to say I've often said that if you can't fix it you shouldn't own it. Point being, my customers don't want to hear about broken tools and necessary delays. So if I can't get a schematic for a tool I don't purchase the tool. If I can't buy parts like brushes ahead of time, I don't purchase the tool. I got about $80,000 worth of tools at this point, and a $30,000 truck. While I wouldn't dream of working on my own truck, there's not a single tool that I can't tear apart, fix, and put back together in the span of 30 minutes. I'm not bragging. This is just my way of saying bravo to you for fixing the tool. But having not finish the video, I'm not entirely sure that it will be deserved. But I have faith in you my brother.

Great video! It was fun watching you fix your dust extractor. Agree about the right-to-repair issue. Things really need to change.I fixed my 20-year-old washing machine with a $10 part. I was going to buy a new one, but read the reviews and most break in less than five years, cost about $1000. I know someone who's had two really expensive washing machines and they didn't even last five years each. So not only are the new machines pretty much impossible to fix yourself, but they don't last as long. And they don't wash as well. I have a dishwasher that's about the same age and plan to try to repair it myself if anything goes wrong. I've always fixed these basic machines, but don't consider myself very mechanically inclined.Never done anything but routine maintenance on my car. Lots of videos on RU-vid for whatever machine breaks. Thanks RU-vid! Oh, and if anyone has those ancient laundry tub brass faucets, you really should hang onto them. They're infinitely repairable with just a few rubber washers. They were designed that way. Just be careful not to Nick the brass threads when you repair them. The new chrome ones look nice, but you'll be buying replacements in the forseeable future.

Modern appliances typically cost far less than similar appliances did 40-50 years. People won't pay those prices today. Otherwise I find modern dishwashers and washing machines work exceptionally well while using a lot less water and electricity. Those are important factors as both have become very expensive.

Having bought my first festool tool, I am now looking at other things to added. I bought a DF 500 set secondhand for what I think was a very good price, whiuch now has me looking at a vac and then you then start looking at sanders, the sytem thing does make a lot of sence, and secondhand is probably the way I'll be going as and when i can afford it.

Merry Christmas to you Peter from East Lyme, Connecticut USA. I fround your RU-vid videos about 3 month’s ago (clearly living under a rock) and recently podcasts with Andy. Your content is really good and you excel at making them. I actually purchased the Domino DF500 after watch your builds. I have the MFT/3 table and a Makita track saw. After seeing this video, I remember a bit from Insider Carpentry’s video. He is in construction and said he burned up the motor on 2 Kapex in a year or two. Makes me wonder if he just needed to replace the brushes as you had done. Keep it up. Enjoy your work even if nearly everything is MDF. I suspect your MR MDF is far better than the normal brown MDF I have access to in my area. Cheers John Gibson

The "Right To Repair" issue has been done to death by youtuber "Louis Rossmann and his battles to be able to repair Apple computers and getting parts on the grey market. My wife accidentally knocked her Apple Watch against a wall and then noticed the Cristal hanging off. A fairly simple and straightforward repair, you would think. She then checked the Apple site to see how much a repair would cost. It was exactly the cost of a new watch. So basically they don't repair the watch at all.

That's not too bad 12 years on one pair of brushes. you can now wait another 12 years and get some more brushes. Like all-electric machines, it needs to be plugged in and turned on before it will work. Have a great Chrismas and I hope Santa brings you all the things you want. It's good to know you can still get parts for a 10 year old tool. I have a Porter Cable random orbital sander that's probably 10 to 15 years old and I can't get simple o-rings to keep the dust collector from popping off. I'm considering replacing it with a Festool equivalent at 5X the price plus a Midi dust extractor so it's good to know they are well backed with parts and service.

Looked up the cost of a switch for my Festool vacuum out of interest and they wanted somewhere around 26 quid! I've done a fair bit of electronics in my time and I've never met a 26 quid basic switch on an appliance! And before anyone says well Festool guarantee parts availability for 10 years... I wonder whether sn exchange system might work better, with two levels of refurbushment. For that one, fix the immediate fault, test & clean and out the door. In other cases, a full rebuild, ensure everything is within tolerance, out the door "as new." Available for sale as new and on exchangeat different pricepoints. Tou tre tradesman might opt for refurbishment of yours (delay), exchange at either price point, or trade in for new. each with relatively little delay.

Actually when you send a tool in for repair Festool do NOT send it back "good as new" My TS 55 REQ went in for repair (within warranty) with 2 issues, they only bothered to fix the broken Fast Fix Lever absolutely nothing on the repair sheet about the other fault & they didn't even bother to give it a service. It was absolutely caked in dust inside the blade housing still & had clearly not been cleaned let alone serviced. When I complained to Festool they just blanked me & couldn't care less. Also even if they had agreed to recollect the tool & do the stuff they had not bothered to when they had the tool it would have been another week or two without the saw.. P.S. Having said that I have an old Dewalt drill I use a for countersinking and other secondary drilling tasks and I suspect from the smell the brushes are warn. Not taken it apart yet but from what I can tell from my research the brushes are not replaceable and a new motor will be required which will mean it is not worth repairing :(

I opened the motor following your post and looked at the brushes but they were fine. Then I began reassembling and testing as I went and the motor was running perfectly. Whenever I take something apart for this sort of maintenance, I cannot resist the chance to clean dust/dirt off interior surfaces that one never has any other reason to access. I usually have some cloth wipes soaked in glass cleaner and clean it all up. Maybe it's OCD to do so, but I can't help but feel that removing all possible dust can only extend the item's life. A good example is when I had to change a thermal fuse in a dryer - why would I go to the trouble of disassembing the dust collection housing to access that part and then NOT clean those interior surfaces, as well as the fan blades? Maybe that's too much for a piece of equipment that's about to start passing dust through it again, I can agree. But at least spray the electronic parts and contacts with electronic parts cleaner.
