Thanks for sharing Kevin. Interesting how you did this. We had a deep craw space and I used to grow down there. I used the pvc pipe, foam coffee cups in pearlite for rooting my clones in one small room and another room for growing. I used pots on corrugated plastic in the grow room for the pots to drain. I just might try your setup next spring, but outside. At 70, I don't fold like I used to, I don't unfold so good either. 😎👍
Yeah one of the beautiful things about this you're not bending over and you're not weeding anything it produced really well I just bought net pots and the clay balls and it did a great job I'm going to be doing another one this spring it's gonna be set up around my koi pond and I'm gonna use the water out of the koi pond to water and fertilize it we'll see how that goes thank you so much for watching you have a great day and ride safe
I tried searching in your videos, do you have one on building your system? Or can you recommend a video on how to build this. I truly believe this is perfect for what I am needing. Thanks man

Great job man.... One of the best thought out, neatest, simplest systems I've seen.
Great setup! Thanks for sharing. Tip for future videos: Loosen up the friction locks on your tripod and it will pan and tilt much easier without any "creaking" noise as you move it.
Kevin, how are you keeping algae from growing? I noticed that the holes not in use are exposed to sunlight. Algae will grow in e clay balls that are wet. Thanks
@@KevinTodd I have an flood and drain -- not as big as yours and differently configured - and I plug a store-bought timer into the wall (I'm indoors), then plug the pump into that. It goes on and off as I choose. That's why I wondered why and how you need an electrician. I may have misunderstood - maybe that was to set up the outlet. I was just thinking maybe you know a better kind of timer. Mine is only capable of longer cycles, which I run less frequently. I'm getting ready to set up a pipe system so am very interested in how others do it.
If your water gets to hot you can simply take a gallon or half gallon jug. Fill it with water and put in the freezer till frozen. Then set it in the water barrel or holding tank. Water will stay cool for several hours.
Actually no my shop is sitting where that used to be but I'm going to do another one this spring and it did produce real well but I wasn't really into RU-vid back then so I didn't document too much of it and thank you so much for watching and ride safe
I used 4 in with tomatoes. Roots took up the entire pipe. Went to 6 in pipe with 6 in net pots and trellis them to ten ft. Lots of fruit and great tasting. But still like my dutch bucket system better.
Has anybody grown like this ever had the roots from the plants get too massive, as to where they slow the flow of the water, and cause the water to rise up too high and leak out, leaving the res almost empty the next day? I considered an overflow/drain, but the problem is still that not enough fresh water is flowing through the pipes... I have tried everything except for trimming the roots, as they are the size the plants need them to be, but if I have to trim them I have to, that is the last thing I want to have to do.. Oh yeah, I flood them for 15 mins every 2 hours, and I leveled out all 4 of my 10' four inch pvc pipes, now I know I should have raised the first, and went lower as I go along, so gravity helps the flow... Any tips or suggestions?
You can trim the roots with no harm! Trim the roots so water sill go through better! When you trim the roots will branch out in a different direction rather then get long
LOVE YOUR SYSTEM. YOU MAY NOT BE yeilding much because it does not look like you used any kind of fertilizer. You need nutrients to make a lush plant. I have never dealt with hydroponics, but the plants need food, not just water. What are clay balls? Where do you get them and the basket pots?
Does the wind ever disturb the net pots? I'm just leery of doing this simply because I don't want the wind to rip the net pots out. Great video. Very informative
Nina LM you paint everything white with Fusion paint for a plastic paint do have a lid on your Barrel make sure it's painted White too the pump would come on for 5 minutes that's to fill the tubes and then it wouldn't come on for another 45 minutes thank you very much for watching
I don't know if you're still monitoring this or not but I have watched your video about ten times and have a few questions. I understand you run your pump for the length of time it takes to fill the pipes and you do that every 30 minutes from 6:00 AM until 6:00 PM. Does the pump over power the drain back or is that flow controlled? What GPM is the pump? Also I'm having difficulty understanding/finding the timing mechanism. It would need to power up at 6:00 AM, run to fill the pipes, turn off, do it again in 30 minutes until 6:00 PM, correct? I also appreciate the fact you have answered many of the viewer's comments questions.
Flood 45 sec. every 60 min. but this is on mine yours might be bigger or smaller your pump needs to be big enough to flood quickly so fill time will vary and go 4 inch net pots and 6 inch pipe and two drums
What are those "Plugs" that you have to cover the holes, very nice simple setup, of course things could be improved but very good, I am looking to get something like this setup very soon. I was thinking about adding fish though to do Aquaponics thanks for the video.
It is the industry-standard in water and sewer lines in your house that is all I have to go on .....I'm not a chemist but .......no I'm not worried........the sun only hit the outside of the pipe and uv I think will break it down I hope this helps wish I could add more to it .....and thank you for watching
Hello Kevin, I am attempting to build a simular system to yours. I am building mine in a straight run of 45 ft. I am going to run mine as a continuous flow with 3/4" overflow return line. Could you please tell me exactly what pump your using? I will be lifting the water about the same height as yours or possibly 1' higher. I am using 4" PVC supported by my wooden privacy fence with 15" setback off fence. Any thoughts would be appreciated....
What type of garden are you doing now? Are you still using the flood and drain? I was hoping to get a detailed materials list and a detailed information on how you assembled your system I have watched your videos all probably 10 times and really like your set up and wanted to get in touch with you on how you did it. We don’t have a huge yard but could do this and it would keep the dogs from getting in it thank you again for your videos and the time you have put into this! I sent you a email as well thank you.
I used 4 inch pipe 3 inch net pots and the clay ball medium the fertilizer I use came from kelp4less 20 20 20 the thing you have to remember the most whatever size Garden you build your Barrel has to have enough water in it to flood it completely I used to time delay relays for the on and off so really the key Point here is having a barrel big enough to to flood your system I use a harbor freight submersible pump lasted for 3 years no problem the barrel has to be painted white to reflect as much sun as possible if you have access to 6 inch pipe that's what I'm going to go with next I don't have a garden right now my shop took up the space where it was at so my yard space is limited now myself but I will be putting one to the back of it pretty soon thank you so much for watching it's just PVC pipe you get a hole saw Mark a straight line across the top of the pipe and every foot drill a 3 inch hole for your net pot.
Thank you sir was your pipes level or did you put some slope in them to help with draining and are your holes for the inlet and outlet pretty much flush with the pipe cap” 6 in pipe and so would you do 4 inch net pots
I'm using 4" pipe and 3" net pots I would recommend using 6" pipe and 4" net pots just to give more root room.Thank you very much and thank you very much for watching.
The only thing is your water reservoir has to be big enough to fill all of your 4-inch pipe. With the nutrients in it kelp4less is the people I got mine from 20 20 20
I take it that there's not a high water level inside the pipe . Interesting.. Well seems to be working , are you going to give the important details ?? Timing , pH, H2o , ..... If your interested I can help , but you are doing well ," kinda " I'll say , ,. Sink the res in the ground . Or not ..... 👍👍👍
I've seen several postings on instagram and Facebook advertising a book. One was posted by Kitchen Harvest. The link cc.alternativedaily.com/alt-hyd01-pre02/?thrive=1&prog=1 But there were multiples and different origins. Look in your data center to see if it will tell you if your video has been reposted under someone else's page.
Craig Fields your adding water at a rate were I have never had to change it but mine is in in direct sunlight all the time might be different indoors or cooler places JMO
hey thank you for some ideas I'm starting with a very small system entirely self produced I have a chemistry and math degree and starting with a single 6 inch pipe and after that I'll set up a larger system, I've gotten an injury so I can't work but I need something to do lol also a question for ya, I home brew beer, I stopped using 5 gallon plastic bucket do you think those will work well for a small system for a water chamber ? I can shield it from light either inside of under my deck. I'm also considering making a system that basically would work as a filter for fish thanks. I have 10 fish tank in my house two of them are 100 gallon ones. I read up on them and they can work very well as pumping the water put and using the plants as a filter and the fish produce the nutrients from the deteitus
+Gavlick Apthesycerski On a flood and drain system you have to flood it......... length of pipe in inches x area Radius -squared x pi = area.........231 cubic inches to a gallon of water so the amount of water storage has to be the same or more than the pipe so good luck have fun.
Kevin Todd OK thank you, I have easy access to 5 gallon buckets would you recommend at all if I extended the system to almost chain those buckets together ? I mean the flow would work through pressure but not sure if the flow would be as fast as needsd
Great system I'm building one myself, I was wondering does the water completely drain out or does it need to hold a bout 1/2 of water, my system holds the water, I was worried about root rote?
I used a two reservoir system, one on top and one on bottom. The bottom reservoir had a sump pump with a float switch. I ran it continuously during daylight hours.
Love 💕 love ❤️ your system. Nice work. Love your 🍅 tomatoes.🤗would love more, much more details however. Nutrients, keeping them cool outside.ect. What was the issue last time ? The “stupid stuff” no judgement just want to learn.
I stuck the water hose in my garden sprayer I use weed killer in...........and a couple of days later in the barrel to add water.....not thinking about the round up on the outside of the hose. I will tell you now it takes 1 day.......one!!!!! and all your plants are dead. To keep cool paint the barrel white and have a lid on it, I used Kelp4less 20-20-20 for hydro garden and follow their instructions and thank you very much for watching
If I were to try this, my biggest concern would be the water temperature. Since the standing water in my garden hose typically reaches 150F during the Summer [and I have to purge it before watering my garden], how do you keep the circulating water at 130F or lower?
I painted every thing white (reflects sun light and heat ) and the water is running every 45 min. that keeps the temperature down. I have never had an issue with heat and I live in south Louisiana heat index 120 in the summer. Don't worry it will be fine and thank you for watching.
I live in Southeast Texas. I buried my nutrient tank below ground. It protects from both heat and cold, and keeps out sunlight. It also allowed me to lower my channels to about 18" high, allowing better access for staking and trellising.
im new to gardening and wanted to know if this set up would work with the roots hanging freely on the inside and a misting hose running along side the large pvc pipe misting the roots?
Thank you for watching......I found that the size of pipe is a big deal.......the bigger the better I would go 6".......no root rot root bound......and no air is pumped in......plants grow to environment so bigger is better.
I would used this one it's like the one I had all you are doing is filling your pipes once every 45 min. and draining www.harborfreight.com/14-hp-submersible-sump-pump-3000-gph-63892.html?_br_psugg_q=sump+pump
A sump pump from harbor freight don't worry about GPM it is timed to flood and drain www.ebay.com/itm/5-LB-WATER-SOLUBLE-TRIPLE-20-FERTILIZER-20-20-20-balanced-micro-nutrients/351756564693?_trkparms=ispr%3D1&hash=item51e65338d5:g:pP0AAOxyyF5RXH-q&enc=AQAFAAACYBaobrjLl8XobRIiIML1V4Imu%2Fn%2BzU5L90Z278x5ickkWpEuxXwAiCNKyBQsQ5%2Fe63uhRvFOwcjl3BXO%2BXOmyAJJ7ryfMjcYPjDnGY6sJJJbMxK0pMUcTEQXVSMwRH%2FYqn9EUUKxYFPZiPr2HRJIM1czfCTJLWVF4dcGNb5QZrn578wLu1F%2FnLnq7K3DfO%2BkJgYC8DddO49%2B5323bqjkNCpJzhyTEiM8jQB9A%2FQwjdVI7YZUU3xZ8Cn9Cs1nJCfU%2BZAj4OP4LO5CfCNKOZxRBApAn8525QLxnRmfUue4TW7H8l9HzRqLnwZjaCRhlynNnXzaN%2By2nGhEb7GmKvnpYCca6tj6tiOCNRnOfoeQq2CU5uBD7xSgQHZ8s2ybj0xo2C%2FwNyQSqwcJpJXI7xoptDD5l32aFN0WDQOkj74XvS5HL6qI4SlJQf0xVUjCVmAwqDTNPX9aCo7iGAO6RNvE1Cd5JugQ1yyuum%2FH8gkeF4r5QQMcMVln4zC44gOPVQF5CMs5fEfj6DwkzmCTGmfZEQQpiVcjURvSz4WchH0upw7rgfJfOp5iE68XF0LCyXR90AJtSr5JNveCzMlgOaGDEz4QZAwpz6VGcwjD5qqGHx9I%2BPsbUUmkAwESlqE3Z9Eg5MEwdCHFggKcq7Ebrc7qn1aKr7ngcXAtA8ziRFp4uQmBdawTDm%2BF%2FvvhFhQae08uQyyINJjBAupPDrH3UETgvRLpNV8QvTrhXyW17LtPRaiUoLcwsR3XIkX9ZyUsWXOF8Bls1yTS4YT0OfnBnlPkE7hA11dDOozWe70nqoH7Fq79&checksum=351756564693b1788e57897043fe98822aa06dd01b2c
I painted the barrel white to reflect light and heat water stays cool to warm all year. The plants never had any issue with the heat with them at all and thank you very much for watching.
Thank u for ur answer. It cant be so easy. White color cant be enough to control water temperature at 20 C and this temperature is good for tomatoes. High temperatures causes root root diseases. I couldnt manage to control the water temperature. It is 30 C at noon and 25C at night. My barrel also white color By the way your pvc pipe hydroponic garden seems so good.
Could maybe add shade to the Rez to keep it out of the sun. “Rez clear” helps with root rot and algae growth. It’s actually not much different than pool shock(sodium hypochlorite). I think the ratio for the shock was a tsp per gal, but you could find a clearer answer in forums. I use the Rez clear and works awesome! just keep in mind that it raises ph so you’ll have to adjust.
Sir I have some questions...plz guide me about this... 1: do we need water flow for 24 hour? 2:what are the indicators of low nutrition level in water? 3: can we grow strawberries in 3" pvc pipe?
I did it both ways I ran it 12 hours (day light) and 24 hours ..........no change ether way your choice......but if you do 12 hours.......do day time......as far as nutrition goes I used Kelpforless 20-20-20 I looked at the blue color......when I fallow the mixing directions and keep it that color.........never grew strawberries but always go as big as you can.....and thank you for watching
You could use a gravity fed water system, which would eliminate the need for a water pump. Also just cut the PVC to open the entire side instead of making holes. The holes seem to difficult to mess with. Other than that, great!
Sorry for the slow come back.........It would flood until pipe is full.....in my case 40 seconds. And it would drain for 45 min. 24 /7.....and thank you for watching
This is what I used and I fallowed their instructions www.ebay.com/itm/5-LB-WATER-SOLUBLE-TRIPLE-20-FERTILIZER-20-20-20-balanced-micro-nutrients/351756564693?hash=item51e65338d5:g:pP0AAOxyyF5RXH-q:sc:USPSPriorityMailPaddedFlatRateEnvelope!70052!US!-1 thank you vary much for watching
Not yet between work, projects and all kinds distractions and my new shop is sitting on the old systems site. So my new system will have a lot less room but I,m working on it.....but to late this year to grow anything much but it can be built for next year. Thank you vary much for watching
You use a fertilizer with micronutrients that is supposed to mimic the soil I don't eat tomatoes but the people that did eat them said they are great. thank you for watching
you can convert this to an aquaponics setup pretty easy, but I wouldnt use white PVC as it will eventually crack in the sun I would use gray or black pipe
miguel thecreditor The plain sch 40 white PVC (white reflects sun heat) I have had in service for 5 years no issues. the cost of my "plant food" or nutrients and supplements is the same as a conventional garden when you add into account the pesticide I don't use so the cost is the same. And as for the fish me and my wife are gone a lot Don't have time for pets.
2 cents per gallon of water doesnt seem to expensive. I use masterblend, cal nitrate and mag sulphate and thats what it comes out to per gallon of water. 2 cents!
Put a sprouted banana (a 3' ornamental type) in my 4"x40' pipe in my green house in the philippines. It grew to 5'+ and packed the whole 40ft pipe nearly tight with roots..this species of banana doesnt grow to 5ft?.a typhoon finished off my 30x100ft hydro project :-(
PVC is used in water systems everywhere this is an old argument I have found nothing supporting your argument so if you don't like PVC use stainless steel thank you for watching
