In this video we look at the equipment I use for recreational tree climbing, in detail describing each item.
Will look at basic safety gear, throw line kit, saddle, ropes and general equipment like slings pulleys and carabiners.
In later videos we will cover Single Rope Climbing techniques and use of Alternating Lanyard Techniques for higher up in the tree.

Great stuff Pat. Look forward to another tree climb adventure camp. I remember as a kid (I’m still a big kid) I clumb a local tree escaping the local mad dog. I was there for hours. It was like a cartoon. It got bored. Everyone passing just laughed. 😞 years later I was working on the area and the tree was there. Bigger but I still couldn’t resist. Up I went. It never leaves (leaves 🍁) you. If it’s in you you’ll be up them. I still do it. Not as high though. Anyway great to see you amang the trees again. Atb

Hullo hullo Patrick from a cold wet Denmark...! Found your videos today. Very inspirational...! Will get me a tree Harness, for sure...! To my knowledge, "RAD", Rapid is only referring to: "Rapid Change" Rapid change of direction. From Ascending To Descending... and or back...! No need to switch gear with direction, unlike other safe ascend and descend methods. RAD is a simpler climb, whitch is a bonus, for recreational users. Stay Safe...Greetings.

Just some information for guys just getting started that dont have 500$ to spend on a harness. I just bought one from Amazon called kisslove thats very similar to the sequoa . it surprisingly well made and I wear it 8 hours at a time and barely notice it on. Its only around 80$. Ive inspected all the key attachments and the stitching is well done and the d rings and the rings for the floating bridge are robust and we'll made. I doubt it will last as long at the petzel but for the cost and as often as I climb it will definately hold up till I can afford to upgrade. Good video and safe climbing

Hi Patrick. I hope you are well. I'm now well into tree climbing! The other day I climbed one with an arborist friend, he was rather quicker than I was. We reached the 70+ foot canopy of a massive tree near Durham. It was such a fantastic afternoon and a fabulous experience. I may one day do some tree climbing in Sheffield, that's where my son lives. ..... Three months ago, I had a fear of heights when I started out and I whimped out at 10 foot high. Then it became 16 foot. Then I was terrified to get beyond the first branch. Then I sat on a branch and couldn't go further. Then one time, I accidentally threw my throw line too high, and ended up hanging from a 50 foot branch, and bottled it to go up further. All the time, safety was in my mind, and part of it is learning how the gear behaves, and learning to trust it. It helped when I climbed with 2 sets of gear to put my mind at peace (my recent massive tree climb was with one main rope and 2 lanyards). On changeovers when up the tree (to advance my rope), it helps me when I use both lanyards, and I test them as I go. When your life is on the line and it depends on some knots you tie, it makes you learn them rather effectively! Thankyou Patrick for helping to inspire me in this, you are one the key people that provided me with inspiration to do something about what I only watched with interest previously.

Stuart I'm so glad my video has inspired you to get up into the trees.It can be quiet scary up there, which is probably a good thing, making you aware that it's not the safest environment, but with the right equipment and safety awareness it can become a safe place, hope you continue to enjoy your time up in the trees, thanks Pat 👍

When we were brats, we never suspected tree climbing would become so involved, did we? Once it was as simple as pretending i couldn't, and watching the girls go first! (Can't think why that would be...) I wish I could still hack it, as it appeals to me, camping up there. But I'll have to do so vicariously thru your very informative and enjoyable videos. Your enthusiasm cannot be hidden, Pat. Hope you get some decent spells in this summer, such as its turned out so far, and I'm very keen to see the next two, having been intrigued by your previous ones. Stay safe, & good times mate! Thank you.

Hi Pat, Nothing wrong with a bit of tree climbing. I've got a few that I have climbed close by but not climbed them in a while. I have flew over them in the paramotor though. Does that count? Interesting to hear about your equipment and the ropes. Static and dynamic. There was a guy called Albert Pierrepoint once and he used static ropes to arrest falls and yes your right. Dead right. They did cause injury! The sudden jolt was swift and clean so they say! The cube for the throw line is a great idea. I have put antennas into trees for ham radio purposes and as you say, if the line is on the woodland floor it picks up all sorts of stuff and snags. Very frustrating. Looking forward to part two:) Sandy
@patrickdickinson6492
@patrickdickinson6492 4 года назад
Hi Sandy, you must get a amazing view high above the trees in your Paramotors, as long as you don, t land in them of course. It's been interesting reading up on the different types of gear, like ropes etc, always nice to be learning something new, only just bought the cube after getting my throw line tangled up over the last year, worth it and it packs down so small. More exciting in parts 2 and 3 as we leave the comfort and saftey of the forest floor, all the best Pat

As you get older, well whose bothered what other people think, as long as there is fun and adventure out there. As for throw lines if you can,t throw there is Sherrill Big Shot a large catapult on a 6 foot pole you can accurately get your throwbag 100+ foot up in a tree, all the best Pat
