This is the final video in my series of recreational tree climbing and
in this video we complete the climb to the top of the tree using 2 lanyards, a technique known as ALT or alternating lanyards techniques.

It is one challenge to climb way up a tree but quite another when significant tasks are added to the activity. In your case, you not only managed to record audio and video but ultimately did an absolutely stellar job, making this A-grade production -- all while climbing a tree! I am sure there is much more that had to go into it than most of us imagine, especially in the planning. Your demonstrations were clear as well as honestly presented as you shared your thinking while dealing with various challenges. I am so glad that you found your niche in making these videos. You are providing the world something of great value.

Thanks for those kind comments, yes took a bit of planning, but all part of the fun. I tried to imagine what I wanted to know when I first started and then tried to put the information over in the vidio. Thanks again for the comments, all the best Pat

I remember when we were kids someone had secured a pallet to sit on right in the top of one of the trees in the local wood that was out of bounds unless you'd reached a certain physical size and level of bravado as it required both ! and as I now walk by looking at where it once was I'd not even attempt it without the gear you use . It really is a different world up in the tree tops , so relaxing , and I remember spending hours up there , you could see over all the other tree tops to the houses and fields surrounding and you'd often see people stood below or walking by , who were totally oblivious to your presence high above them . Same with the wildlife .

@richm2835 Yup, I have similar memories. At 8-10 years old I scrounged some scrap boards, dragged them halfway up an old hemlock at the edge of our woods, wedged them across some branches making a small 'deck'. No climbing gear, no ladder or steps, just an old short 'haul' rope. I don't remember how I managed to climb up and down -- there were some dead limbs below the 'green' ones which I must have clambered up and down. 65 years latter I'm watching/listening to Pat (and others), assembling gear and eying a 100 ft white pine and several 50+ ft white ash in our woods and thinking about tree camping. Good times. Thanks Pat for your inspiration and expertise!!!

Yeah, I grew up in an area with a lot of tall pine trees and as a young kid (basically grade school to early high school age), we would climb to the tops of those pines. The tallest were probably 75-100 ft or so... Sometimes we would fall somewhere along the way and the limbs would slow us down so that we didn't hit the ground with full force and even when we did finally hit the ground, this was pretty old forest, so there was quite a bit of pine straw under those big trees -- a 50 year old tree probably had 50 years of pine straw under them. Surprisingly, none of us ever broke any bones in these endeavors -- apparently, Darwin was sleeping on the job... These days, I wouldn't do anything like that without a climbing harness and safety ropes. I've determined that gravity sucks a lot more as you get older and I've broken rips from falls that are a **lot** closer to the ground just around the house. So, at my age, why in the world am I looking at videos like this? Just getting some ideas for going up in one of the trees on my property so that I can trim some of the limbs that are dead or just need removing. It's a live oak tree, so not that tall (maybe 40-50 ft) and I don't need to go all the way up, but it's further up than I'm willing to fall at my current age, especially with a chain saw and since the landing point would most likely be on the concrete.

Great vid mate. When I spoke before about me and my mate climbing everything in the comments of one of your previous vids, it amazes me that we did it all without ropes etc. Dont get me wrong I have solo'd on rock (not hard stuff I'm not that good) but ropes on trees seem alien to me. I'm all for it obviously. I am SPA qualified and I have led loads of groups on rock so I'm all for safety and now I've seen it in action I wonder if I should get some gear and ring Andy up. It would be like the old days. We wold even go from tree to tree in some parts of the wood. Brings back great memories.

Why would anyone want to give this a thumbs down is beyond me! Great Trilogy and if you will excuse the comment then, I now realise why we Midlanders call you lot, 'Northern Monkeys'. LOL. The last time I climbed a tree must be 55 years ago using 6 inch nails found on a building site. Probably not eco friendly, but we had great fun. However, as I said in previous clips, I ain't going up any trees nowadays, rather watch you doing it instead. Looking forward to your next adventure whatever that might be. ATVB, Robert in Bulgaria.

Hello once again from Oklahoma Pat, I so love your videos, I have a question . am I right in assuming ,after your decent , to retrieve cambien saver, one ties a knot at the end of the decent rope, targe enough to slip through large ring on cambien, but catches on small ring, that seems like only way to retrieve it I suppose.
@patrickdickinson6492
@patrickdickinson6492 4 года назад
Hi again, yes you have got it slot on, I tie a knot like you say or you can fastern a plastic ball on that does the same thing, thanks Pat

Thank you for the video. I like tree climbing too and do it by the same way and equipment like you, but I use full duplication- two ropes, two friction savers as well as ASAP LOCK device on the second (safety) rope. Moreover, I use CROLL on my ASTRO BOD FAST for ascension. Good luck!

Hi Pat, excellent inspiring series of videos...was waiting for you to finish off by showing us how to to retrieve the cambium saver. I assume you don't leave it up the tree?!
@patrickdickinson6492
@patrickdickinson6492 4 года назад
Hi Andrew, sort of run out of time, very easy though, there are plastic balls you can fasten on or tie a knot it passes through the big ring, but catches on small ring which it can,t go through, then simply falls to the ground, a similar method lets you lower it to the ground, thanks Pat

Great video, I am inspired to climb. Thank you. Can I ask how you would recover the cambium saver after you are on the ground? Once you pull the climbing rope through, I would think it would remain in the tree as it isn't attached to the rope.

@patrickdickinson6492 3 года назад
Hi, if you tie a knot in the end of the rope, pull so it passes through the large ring of the Cambian saver, it will jam on the small ring allowing you to pull the Cambian saver down, thanks Pat

Very enjoyable video again. Interesting to see those rope techniques. How do you get the friction saver back to earth?
@patrickdickinson6492
@patrickdickinson6492 4 года назад
Thanks Patrick yes should of shown that but ran out of time. Basically a knot in one end of the rope will pass through the big ring but jam on small ring, bringing the friction saver to the ground, it can be lowered with the throw line as well, thanks Pat

Hi Patrick, Looks like a lot of fun, one thing you did not show was how you get the friction protector down after you have descended. I understand you just pull the rope through backwards to get it down but do not know how you get the friction protector down... Thanks for your well made videos very informative and entertaining...
@patrickdickinson6492
@patrickdickinson6492 4 года назад
Hi Brian, yes should of included this but, basically put a knot in the end of the rope, it will go through the large ring, but not the small which it snags on and pulls the friction saver to the ground, thanks Pat

Hi Juan, yes should of included this, with role through both rings of friction saver, tie a knot one end, pull other, knot passes thro big ring, jams on small ring allowing friction saver to be pulled to ground, thanks Pat
