Take every reasonable precaution to avoid injury while learning! White belts are simultaneously the most at risk for injury and the most likely to injure, so these kinds of drills are very useful for them

Are you using wrestling as a general term or do you mean wrestling specifically. I use a lot of judo and that works pretty well to get the fight to the ground but I hate take shots on opponents. If it is up to me I’ll just use a nice Ogoshi, Hari ogoshi, or even a little ko uchi gari to pick the single leg up, but I almost never shoot

What's wrong with time based promotions? If they are actually rolling, and are performing as the belt they are being promoted to should, I see no problem in just handing out a well deserved belt or earning a stripe every 4-8 months. The other thing is, what is the problem with the instructor not rolling very often? How are they supposed to evaluate you based on your merit if they are not able to see your progress, let alone everyone else's progress to promote them. Make that make sense. John Danaher doesn't roll very often, does that mean he's a walking red flag? Okay.. our coaches aren't John Danaher, but my point still stands. Rolling often, and teaching effective Jiu-jitsu are two different skills.

I watched a video of a man who claims to have earned a brown belt in just three years. He believes he deserves this rank because he attended numerous classes. I attend numerous classes, and I still have a white belt with two years of training. I'm starting to get it. Somehow, I think he might have gotten promoted based on classes attended and not on actual skill It's just a hunch.

I'm blue, I usually tap all the whites and alot of the blues, competitive with purples and get waxed by the browns/blacks, which i think is exactlybas the skill gaps should line up...but, my gym is filthy. Mats always have hair/stuff on them. Coach will occasionally blow them off with electric leaf blower, he never mops them. He usually dips out early after instructionals when the class is rolling, and he'll have someone lock up. He'll roll once or twice with us,(he is amazing too, demolishes me with ease), but then he will sit and tiktok/Instagram. I'm thinking he should be watching the rolls and actually coaching, giving tips and advice. I love the Gi, but only 2 gi classes per week, and instructionals and usually pretry basic. Wondering if i should be looking for another gym.

Is it better for me to train at same bjj academy as my kids or go to a different place??? So my kids train under a 5th degree black belt who trained with Ricardo Almeida and I was looking at a different school a 3rd degree black belt but he's under a 8th degree black belt Rigan machado who is top 10 BJJ instructors in the history of BJJ. The only other thing to note is my kids academy has more flexible schedule , other place trains 2 days a week with no morning classes.
@RobotDolphin

@RobotDolphin sounds good...I guess I feel bad because I did start the bjj school with my kids but dropped out to focus on krav maga and possibly muay thai so I put bjj on hold at my kids place where they train....But in few mths , I'm going to another bjj gym or stay with my kids?? I was a little discouraged, I feel like the bjj fundamentals classes that I was taking were getting advanced techniques as instructor was making it seem like it was an all level class... I'm fine with that but I need to learn how to roll, to flow not just wrestle but move properly.

The biggest thing I disagree with you on is about loyalty to your gym. The majority of the top gyms are loyal to their gyms and not gym jumping. Why would you gym jump that's why you stay in your "clan" new Union, alliance, Gracie Barra, you don't gym jump there's plenty of sister gyms and you're supposed to stay with your instructor and not fly to flags Carlson Gracie talked about people that do this and this is very frowned upon. As far as the instructor rolling is halfway right but as a student you're not supposed to ask your instructor to roll and his gym to teach you the correct technique and he should roll and my instructor is a multiple time world champ and doesn't need to roll with anyone to prove that he's good or knows what he's talking about. Gym Jumper's are garbage and they are ronan's if the Instructor sends them that's one thing. I'll leave the rest alone. Have a good day

I think transition from complete beginner to blue belt is way harder than transition from a blue belt to purple belt. Its just difficult to learn all the fundamentals required to be able to be competetive at any level in jiu jitsu, once you learn that further progression is just a matter of time. Also its so easy to get discouraged, as a white belt when you get beat up every session and there are only handful of guys you can beat you feel like youre stuck and not progressing at all.I've been training for about 14 months and im still a white belt but i feel like the gap between my skills then and now is much greater than the gap between blue belts and purple belts.

Blue belt for life! No joke I have had 2 ACL reconstruction surgeries due to freak accidents from takedowns. I’ll still drill them but refuse to use them in live rounds. I would rather pull guard and sweep for top. If that means blue belt for life… So be it!

Red Flag for me: is the Sensi active in the class, do they walk around and check technique. It’s one thing to know something really well and another to teach it. Being a good teacher is apart of the job, that’s why you pay dues. When I am teaching, I am gathering information about the students, at what point did the information sink in? What feedback did they give? What’s more challenging for them? Another is checking in: Okay you have been hitting a Dojo for awhile, has the Sensi pulled you aside at the end of class to ask you how things are going, what are your challenges, and this sort of thing. It’s not about giving advice on personal life rather what’s happening in Jujitsu, and sometimes your personal life can impact it. Being a good coach is seeing that and knowing what to do. Lastly, after some time ask yourself do you really feel like you’ve learned something about the art behind the methods. I am talking the big picture, sometimes this comes later, but that big picture knowledge will change your life in Jujitsu and Judo.

Also if you only have time for one or prefer to concentrate on one then you can use no gi methods in 100% of circumstances.. if someone is wearing heavy clothing then no gi works the same. But If someone has a light T shirt on then gi doesn’t work the same. If at all. With No gi you aren’t relying on an additional resource they may not be there..

My sensei used to spar us full contact once per promotion from white belt to any level. He never lost a sparring match against his own students. The only person who beat him was Grand Master Advincula, and we only got to see that once per year during seminar.

The belt system is the whole problem with ju jitsu and other martial arts, it will always be manipulated by certain dojos and instructors. Wrestling and grappling doesnt have belts. Time for this nonsense to be gone.

For beginner students defenitely stick to ONE training school and ONE teacher. Thats no matter what you study, math, language, etc. Stick to one coursebook or methodology, because of the consistency, and each training is carefully planned for the next training. If a beginner picks up something from youtube or another teacher it will not fit in his progress and possible make the beginner thinks his teacher is limited and not so good.

Time based promotions is fine. If there’s a stripe system for every 4-6 months with a student doing an average 3 classes per week. Not all students are going to be competitive. Some will show great technique and help others when they’re higher belts. Not all students are going to be able to competitive due to age etc

lol striking is a whole different world. I trained boxing for five years before I even stepped on the mats back in 2018, but have only started sparring 2023. I freaking sucked at it! lol Much much different than hitting the bag, mitts etc. I love sparring though, which is an awesome addition to my grappling.

This came across my thread. I like the striking requirement. But it takes at least 1-2 years for a basic striking requirement. 1 month....no way.. But I have never seen a bjj person at purple or higher that didn't have an adequate basic striking base. I look at purple belts through 1 lense...how does their implementation hold up against strength and athleticism. I only know 1 demographic that complains about both...on the mats. The purple
