Jazz St. Louis welcomes the great Sherman Irby, alto saxophonist with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, for an in-depth masterclass on improvisation. He explains and demonstrates his thoughts and approach on learning to improvise including learning songs, studying harmony, rhythm, creating drama, and understanding the blues. This session was originally recorded as part of Jazz St. Louis' virtual residency series and was held in partnership with our friends at Jazz at Lincoln Center (jazz.org).
