Little update of how I feel 2 years into the Navy. I made Sonar Technician Second Class (STG2). Stationed FDNF Destroyer (DDG) 7th Fleet in japan. I do not speak on behalf of the navy and this is all just from my own personal experience.

There’s always tension at the end of the day… the work schedule and op tempo is a lot higher and there’s liberty and housing restrictions but you also learn quicker and get to see japan. Half the time I was there was Covid so we didn’t hit much ports but now ports are coming back into play so I would say if you want to visit ports, explore the culture, and really learn the rate and not afraid of the workload (I’ve seen alot of people get burnt out) then japan is great but if you want to have a less restrictive life and not be deployed/working as much I would say stay stateside

Would you consider making a video on how you feel about your specific rate and duty? Like a review? I’m considering the navy just not sure what rate I’d like. As for the mental, I’d say take advantage of the “OneSource” they should offer therapists.

@@KelloTheArtist I was hoping to hear some talk about Sonar. I was an STG in the old days. 70s on the AN/SQR-18. I was a Contractor for the AN/SQQ-89 (V) 1 through (V)6 after I got out. I wrote Operating Guidelines and did at sea ASW training. There are a ton of opportunities if you decide to get out. Advice: try to work with the Contractors when they come aboard. Give yourself a good reputation with them and you’ll have a nice profession for life.
