How to have resonance? And how to sustain a note when belting? Mine's too shaky. Maybe you've got tips for us :o thanks very muchos!
@OrisStories
@OrisStories 4 года назад
Hi Keith! I'm really not an expert or teacher, but sustaining a note and shakiness probably stems from the same problem: breath control. Your voice is an instrument, and just like with a saxophone or clarinet, controlling the air that comes out of it is one of the most important things. If your notes are too shaky, you could try standing as powerfully as you can and try to sing with more 'oomph' than you have done before. Sustaining a note also means you need more air for longer, so learning to control that flow is key. Always record yourself singing as well, that way you can listen to the things you're improving or the things you could try to do differently much better. Practice makes perfect!
@keithwall2380
@keithwall2380 4 года назад
@@OrisStories Thanks! That helped a lot. Yes, I do record myself a lot everyday and I do have a problem with my breath control. I also sing in a low volume because it's embarassing singing at home especially when the voice cracks trying to reach those high notes. I'm working on range right now and the people at home have no idea about singing so it's hard for me to explain why I make cat noises 4am in the morning. And lmao the "oomph" part. Anyway, I'm a self taught not-singer singer through watching youtube videos and I've seen myself progress through the past years. Maybe it's time to have a vocal coach for some parts I do not know of and parts I have to work on with. Thanks again!
@OrisStories
@OrisStories 4 года назад
@@keithwall2380 Ah yes, I used to have that problem as well! It's super important to have a place where you can "oomph" as much as you can, haha, so you can practice the way you'd normally sing. An hour of correct practice is better than five hours of trying not to make too much noise... Although I understand your predicament.

@OrisStories
@OrisStories 4 года назад
Haha, what I mean is that trying to sing with an "oomph", so, with power, giving it all you got, is important, because you have to try to learn to control your voice singing this way, instead of practicing softly, because that is not how you will perform. If you are running a race, you have to practice at top speed, you know? Also, you are way too kind, thank you so much. :) That comment made my day!

This video is about about a year ago but you responded to my comment (a top comment about holding a straight note) 3 months after you uploaded this video so I'm gonna take my chance to ask you this question. I'm having problems executing my vibrato. Do you have any tips? I only sing every night when everyone's asleep here at the 1st floor living room so no one hears me. Going through the day my voice is tired after all the meetings and singing i do in my break times from work. So the effect causes my vibrato to be slow and unsupported ooor not coming out at all. Addition to that, my throat hurts from lowering my larynx trying to reach low notes so then I can't sing anymore at all. Do you have any tips to have a neutral larynx? Or at least a tip to reach very low notes. I usually sing Tori Kelly and Mariah Carey songs cus I wanna make male covers and sing it to a voice/social app like Amino. So my main problems are that my vibrato is wobbly, sometimes slow, and sometimes doesn't come out at all. And, my throat hurts from lowering my larynx to reach low notes. Also, my runs are sometimes messy but I'm working on that, maybe you have some tips for that too. I know there's too much that I said, but i'm really passionate about singing and couldn't get my own vocal coach because i'm a very busy person cus of work, even during the weekends. Thank you so much! Keep safe during quarantine
@OrisStories
@OrisStories 2 года назад
Hi Keith! It took me a little longer to get back to you this time, forgive me. I'm going to be upfront with you: if singing is really your passion, you're going to have to make time for it, no matter what. You can't sing out loud at night if you have problems with your neighbors, that is super understandable, but you have to find a way to practice at full volume to train your voice well. It doesn't matter what tip I give you, you have to find a space where you can make some noise so you can develop a healthy vibrato. If your throat hurts at all, this means you are doing something very wrong, and forcing yourself to maybe sing notes your instrument can't handle? As for the runs: practice very slow at first with a metronome, and when you get comfortable, keep moving the BPM up until you are happy with the tempo and results. Passion always should be paired with action, so really try to figure out a way to be able to practice multiple times a week in a comfortable place. Perhaps someone has a garage you can practice in, or you can find a music school that will allow you to sing there? I wish you a lot of luck!

What was about breathing? What about the ribs? Could you tell?))
@OrisStories
@OrisStories 4 года назад
Hi there! We did not talk about breathing too much because I learned a lot of that years ago, but it's always a good idea to try to breathe 'low' and use all of the muscles in your lower back and stomach to support your breathing and voice. :)

@sierrashelton6923
@sierrashelton6923 4 года назад
From what we could see it looked like natalie was explaining that when you breathe correctly from a low spot, your ribs should stay expanded (keeping the air in) while you are using your ab muscles and diaphragm to dictate your notes. If you breathe correctly and keep your ribs expanded, this will keep your diaphragm connected and keep your tone and power in place!

Dude I am SO INCREDIBLY JEALOUS! I've been suffering with crazy vocal issues that im.unsure are permanent problems or just bad technique. But if anybody can help me its HER I have had lessons before and idk why but I just dont understand sound and resonance with the same thought process as others. Her approach to teaching is so interesting I think that just might be what i need!! But, I've planned on saving up for lessons, the last time i checked she charged like 145 per hour? Which isnt bad for NY but that was a while back so it may be higher now idk. But I got intimidated because i had to fill out a questionnaire and read her websight and it said something about she may only be able to see you once. Or like, she cant garunteed continues training or something... but that totally discouraged me from actively pursuing her, that and the fact that I'm a broke beech lol
@OrisStories
@OrisStories 4 года назад
First of all: please don't be jealous! I worked incredibly hard for this opportunity. Natalie is an extremely insightful teacher and I learned a lot from her in just 45 minutes, but it might be wise to learn more about your own voice before you go to her so you can get the most out of the class while you're not dealing with 'beginner questions'. They charge a good bit more than that. Don't get intimidated, if you never try, you never win, that's my motto. Just save a dollar at a time and you'll get there!

Even though Natalie is beyond amazing, if you need consistent vocal training I’d go for someone like Claire Hosterman who’s going to help you grow vocally to the point of getting to where you feel spending money on Natalie wouldn’t be a waste. Her prices aren’t cheap, but I’ve learned SO MUCH just from watching her videos on Instagram and I plan to train with her once financially stable.
