Hey guys, love your show. Manu Prakash invented a disposable microscope. I'm giving you the link to the Ted talk where he explains it. They got the cost per microscope down to around less than a dollar. Maybe you could take them with you to give to the healthcare workers you meet. It detects Malaria

Random malaria fact: You can cure late-stage syphilis by infecting people with malaria, since the syphilis bacteria can't handle the high fevers. This was actually used a treatment before the discovery of antibiotics. So as weird as it sounds, malaria, one of the deadliest human diseases, has saved lives.
@jameswoll
@jameswoll 7 лет назад
I can't think of the name of the treatment, but there was a doctor a long time ago who administered diseases/bacteria to induce a fever and immune response to fight cancer, with much success, but of course he is completely unheard of. Cruxley's Cocktail or something... it had a catchy name. Sorry I can't remember or find the post. Maybe someone else will know.
@StuartRedman
@StuartRedman 7 лет назад
jameswoll Was it William Coley? He created something called "Coley's toxins", which was a combination of Streptococcus pyogenes and Serratia marcescens that he used to provoke an immune response in people with cancer. That sounds like what you were talking about.

Destin, how about a video focusing on "the world getting better"? Crime rates over decades, disease, infant mortality, world poverty, polio eradication, smallpox eradication, etc? I think it would be a popular video, and even more importantly help people feel a little more hopeful. It's been a rough couple years for the first world, but if you look at humanity in aggregate you get a clear picture of an improving world. You could also do a video on things that need more focus like climate change, but that's "been done". The positive side hasn't really been looked at in popular media!

Spike Kastleman so your point is to get malaria yourselves so you can die and then you help os all avoiding that problem of overpopulation - or alternatively you want others to die of malaria instead of you? seriously - where is the logic in that? Shouldn't you fully disclose the risks you are adding to your fellow travelers and the carrier? If I were told that another passenger had compressed gas cylinders or chemical rocket motors in his pocket, I might want to reduce my risk of explosion or fire hazard by not sharing that car ride. At minimum, I should be allowed to know of any unusual risks. We have all seen videos of lithium battery fires by now, and the hazard of several rocket motors, in an unshielded, flammable box (probably tucked into flammable packing in an inaccessible luggage bay) is similar to a battery fire. A good question for Destin might be what would you do if something went wrong with your special cargo at 35,000 feet?
@ivanstroganov5458
@ivanstroganov5458 7 лет назад
Ed Price you must be fun at parties. btw. black powder rocket motors are perfectly save. you would somehow have to get sparks or fire into the nozzle hole. other than that there is no chance of self ignition.

As a mosquito control technician I can tell you mosquitoes are by far the greatest killer of mankind. Slight correction to your video destin. Males and female mosquitoes both seek flowers for their primary food source, however females only find a blood meal after having mates with a male. They need the protein to lay the eggs. Not whenever they can. Most people don’t know control districts even exist here in California. We know we are doing a good job when we don’t make the news. Love you videos keep up the great work

I know this is old and you may not see tjis, but...whats the current spray used, and how do you avoid affecting pollinators?
@nunyabuisness21mill
@nunyabuisness21mill 2 года назад
@@RICDirector when we treat adult mosquitoes we call it fogging. What it is actually is a very fine mist most droplet sizes between 5-30 microns we use a product called mgk or evergreen. You’ll find it under different names same stuff. And since this is a pesticide that is indiscriminate on what it kills we are very careful not to use it when pollinators are active. Basically there are a number of things that have to go right for us to use it. 1 an inversion layer, this helps the chemical stay suspended in the air an float right about knee high. 2 a very slight wind 2-3 mph is best. Nothing over 10 ever. And last but not least we do this very early in the morning around 4-5 am. When mosquitoes are active but bees are not. We also look around for bee hives and if there are bee hives nearby we don’t fog. We try and get them when they are in a larvae stage in the water much more targeted and better control all around.

Eugena Cooney Yeah the diseased blood cells can't transport enough oxigen, but as soon as you aren't too phisically active and always get enough oxigen from your enviroment the healthy cells keep you alive. Still the life expectancy is only about 40 - 60 years.

I have lived here my entire life and have never gotten malaria but, I know tons of people who do. Heck my grandma got it in her bone marrow. I am very sad to hear that your sister contracted Malaria. Having done a short term missions trip to Africa, I am fairly aware of the dangers of malaria. I am strongly in favor of residential spraying of DDT on interior walls of homes to help keep homes mosquito free. While bed netting in Africa offers some protection, it is very restrictive, in that you must remain under a 6 by 6 square bed net for exactly 1/2 of your life (12 hours of day, 12 hours of night near the equator). And that assumes that there are not any holes in the net and that you don't accidentally stick your foot outside of the net in your sleep. Western countries need to lift their restrictions of DDT used in African countries.

I did that exact lab work for 7 years but in UK, it's nostalgia for me :) 2:28 thick film showing plasmodium falciparum and plenty of it, mostly trophozoites, 1 gametocyte. The staining technique is better than most of my colleagues would normally have done in UK. It was perfectly made, but then we only do a couple a day, they probably do dozens over there. As a matter of fact, I had colleagues who'd come from Africa and they said generally people don't bother doing lab tests to check a diagnosis of malaria. If you have a fever, you take antimalarials in the first instance. I don't see any malarial parasites in your thin film at 3:00, but its a small section of the slide and its out of focus. Different species of malaria look different under microscope and part of my job was to identify the species. Not all species enlarge the red cells, not all make the red cells look spotty. The main thing on both of these slides is ignoring the white cells which might be freaking out your viewers. Oh and your sister probably wouldn't have died 15 years ago. Treatment hasn't really come on much since then, it's more a matter of access to treatment, and being white and able to fly home if things got really bad, she would have been fine. It's the people who can't afford to bring themselves to a clinic or buy antimalarials who are at most risk.

Each ecological niche has its peculiarities, until recently my country was only controlling the disease, avoiding mechanisms of extermination mainly so that we did not interfere in nature, since the main focus was in the state of Amazonas. After several studies and conjectures, it was found that exterminating the mosquito, vector of the disease, would only reduce the diversity of the family by 1%, and that in this way there would be no significant damages in the environment in question. The main concern was that eliminating mosquitoes would eliminate pollinating agents in the same way, which in fact did not occur. In 2015 we had fewer cases of malaria, there are several techniques that can be used for mosquito extermination and control: genetic transformation (as used in the United States to exterminate Cochliomiya hominivorax, an insect responsible for causing myiasis in cattle) , bacteria in the case of Australia, or the use of drugs that is the case of Brazil, following the WHO recommendations in the synergistic applications of artemeter and lumefantrine (AL), artesunate and amodiaquine (AS + AQ), artesunate and mefloquine (AS + MQ) and artesunate and sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (AS + SP) and application of insecticides.

I contracted malaria in Eastern India two years ago. I didn't realize that it was malaria, thought it was some kind of weird flu. I went two weeks without taking any medicine, and to be honest it wasn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Anyways, after two weeks and not getting over my "flu" I went to a pharmacy and was given medicine, although the pharmacist didn't say what the disease was. I found out after returning to America that my symptoms were consistent with malaria and blood testing confirmed it, but I was free from the disease by then thanks to the pharmacist in India.

My granddad was in the British Artillery in World War 2 and got malaria while he was a Prisoner of War (P.O.W) camp in Burma. My mother and uncle were adopted by him when he married my Nana. The reason he didn’t have children was because the Quinine made him sterile. Thanks for educating us.

I heard about someone who recently died of malaria because the doctor mistook it for regular fever. I think it was my dad's boss's son so the idea that only poor people are vulnerable is a myth. Malaria is now easily treatable, but people still die from it because of lack of prevention and not caring because it's treatable.

Random fact: sickle cell anemia can greatly reduce or eliminate you from getting malaria. But, the drawback is the amount of pain and other issues sickle cell can cause. Double edged sword but a sign of how evolution built a resistance. Great video as always!!

Well from my studies I found out that there is an interdependent relationship between malaria and Sickle cell Anaemia, Now people who have sickle cell anaemia are immune to malaria since their cells are deformed or crescent shape, But people with only one sickle cell anaemia gene (carriers) are also immune and live longer, of they are infected with anaemia they carry it without affect. They are only surviving because of each other , otherwise they would've been wiped out.

In brazil we still think of malaria as incapacitating disease for a life time, in some regions in the amazon a good portion of the population has to learn how to live with the regular fevers associated with malaria.

Hi Destin, I'm not sure if you have concluded that these eggs you saw while fishing are mosquito eggs. I could offer you a different explaination: I'm studying biomedicine in Germany and just a few days ago I've learnt about many different parasites. One of them is called Shistosoma mansoni (or "blood fluke" is what google translater tells me). It is often found in standing freshwater and widespread in Africa. It's between host is a freshwater snail. If animals bath in this water, Shistosoma mansoni makes it's way directly through their skin. The symptoms of an infection are pretty similar to those of malaria, but often the infections show symptoms in a very late state of the sickness. BUT these eggs appeared to be pretty huge. I've never seen real Shistosoma egss, hence I dont know their size. Parasites usually reproduce themselves asexually in the between host and sexually in the final host, so i probably am wrong by assuming these are Shistosoma eggs. Though you might want to get checked for shistosoma if you develop certain symptoms. Greetings!
