My sister is taking her first steps in Ableton Live, and she made her first drumloop. Let's talk about what's good about it, and also give some ideas for further development to see where this loop could go with just a few more steps!
My goal is to show that music production is within the reach for everyone, even if you have no formal training or background in music making or playing instruments.

Bach said than organ is easy, you just have to push the right key at the right moment.... All the problem is in "right" (key and moment) of course... So it seems easy to enhance a little drum loop in 20 minutes, but in fact, it needs a lot of work, several years, to choose the right thing to add at the right moment! And you are very good at this kind of choices!

Fascinating! How some (quite simple) tweaks and additions bring out the potential of a basic idea. And a good choice for the basic rhythmic pattern, it instantly clicked with me.

I play keyboard with my band ... we make rock progressive. SOOOOO FAR from here, but I found your videos very clear and usefoul. You desciribe foundations and decisions that have to be done so well. Obviously there some difference composing jazz and tecno but the mindset must be clear. Thanks for your work. Subscribed

Nice vid, really liked what you did with the vocal that gave me an idea for my next song. I was wondering whether, as a beginner, it would be advisable to perform the mastering stage before any mixing. What are your thoughts?

Question from a non-producer, just a fan: From your explanation it sounds like 'mastering' is merely a matter of pumping up the volume, but I'm sure there's more to it than that. Can you enlighten me? This was a fun approach to the lesson, BTW. ✌

Mastering is basically doing similar moves to mixing, but in a much subtler way, as the effects used apply on the entire song (IE the mix). A good mastering engineer will slightly help reduce the resonances in the track, make it louder, rebalance the frequency response of the track, so it both translates better to other devices and sounds closer to tracks of similar styles, further control the dynamic range (both to help the track pump and to make it easier to make louder), and, finally, do minor creative tweaks such as adding saturation or expanding the stereo image, to make the song's qualities more apparent. So tldr: mastering is principally making the song louder, but it's also making small but sweeping changes to both have a track that better translates into other sound systems, and that just overall sounds intersubjectively "better" (while there is no objective "better" in music, we do have arbitrary standards that we generally agree makes music "better").

Does everything just sound bad when it's not mastered? Like if you heard the Bicep track unmastered, do you think it would sound really amateurish, or would you think "wow this is great, it'll be amazing when mastered"? I'm basically wondering if it's worth mastering songs that simply don't sound very good yet. I've created a few things that I feel have some decent ideas, but get disheartened and end up abandoning them before the mastering stage because they sound so bad compared to the stuff I listen to.
@Dispoboy1

The magic is definitly in the mix, not the Master. My advise: don’t waste your Money on a mastering for something that isnt mixed properly. Mastering is only trying to make Tracks translate more even on different Sound systems, and maybe Adding a little Bit of grit or loudness. But an unmastered track should still Transport the mood or energy of the track.
@thegrinderman1090
@thegrinderman1090 7 месяцев назад
@Dispoboy1 Thanks for your reply. Was never considering paying for anything to be mastered, would want to learn it myself. But I've been waiting until I made something which I felt was worthy, which I haven't done yet. The stuff I'm trying to make has a heavily-produced sound, i.e., not subtle with the effects, lots of distortion, with more emphasis on texture than melody. But it just feels like something impactful is missing from my sounds.
