0:50: On a conceptual level, it's weird that "You'll do better if you understand the rhythm than if you just try to react" is a remarkable feature for a genre called *rhythm* games.
That's true for a lot of rhythm games though. Maybe more so for RD, but even the more normal note falling games still benefit from you knowing/being able to predict the song.
Expanding on what jazpuh said, it's very heavily dependant on what *kind* of rhythm game it is, as well as what kind of gimmicks the game has. Rhythm Doctor is actually fairly unique in rhythm games, where twitch reflexes are almost completely sidelined in favour of listening to the music and learning the cues; essentially choosing "vibes" over "speed and pattern recognition" (the only other rhythm game that comes to mind that shifts as hard into the lane that Rhythm Doctor does is Phigros, which demands both but leans towards "vibes over speed"). Honestly, it's rather ironic that I'm explaining this under Patricia Taxxon's song, where the heat notes are about as close as you get to needing fast reaction time.
Fizzd suggested at one point that these "feel the beat" games be called the "alt-rhythm" genre, as opposed to traditional "sheet-reading" games like Guitar Hero.
This is awesome :D I like the idea of working with musicians to make music for the game as opposed to just licensing songs I like. Having published a Rhythm platformer a many years ago it was awesome getting to work with Infected Mushroom to come up with an original track for the game. If I was making it today I'd for sure have reached out to you, too! Your music is amazing and deserves to be heard by everyone!
Just came here after beating Act 5 and it was better than I would've ever guessed. Every song was great, but the one you worked on really caught me off guard. Especially later into it, it did all sorts of things that were fun to react to on the fly. Good job to you, and to everyone else who worked on this wonderful update as well!
CONGRATULATIONS!!!! IVE BEEN FOLLOWING RHYTHM DOCTOR FOR A WHILE NOW AND IT’S ABSOLUTELY NUTS THAT YOU GOT IN DUDE THAT’S AMAZING!!! HORRAY FOR DOGS!!!!
congrats!! 0:29 definitely resonates, the composition process for 7th Beat's games feels like solving a puzzle game while writing the song. both RD and ADOFAI are just brimming with uniquely musical ideas, it's super refreshing to see in a space otherwise dominated by VSRGs!
"No more licensed music, pay me instead" I unironically agree with this, on a broader scale. The only rhythm game series allowed to have licensed tracks is Guitar Hero and that franchise is dead. Long live the original tracks of Beatmania and DDR and all the shit it inspired us to make.
The rhythmic complexity of jungle is my favorite thing about the genre, and it's sorely underrepresented in rhythm gaming from what ive seen, awesome to hear your take on it! Also adofai goated some of those high level charts are unreal
After playing your level just a moment ago, it is incredible to see an artist I've been very impressed by to get a chance to make an incredible song and chart for one of my favourite games... But also SCREW YOU FOR THE QUINTUPLET AT THE END!!!!!
I'm so happy you could be a part of RD, I've been following it since around early 2017 and you pretty much summed up why I love it so much and it's still engaging after all that time. Also your level is hard as hell and I love it
What a small world... Not only do I have you to thank for explaining Tap Troupe, but I can also blame you for a tough Rhythm Doctor song. Helping me obtain one perfect, only to struggle on one you yourself created. It's honestly, quite funny lol
well now I feel bad that the song I put in ADoFaI wasn't specifically written for it,,, to be perfectly accurate, it PARTIALLY was. It had already existed in one form, a mutual friend of mine and 7BG started making a chart for it, and when that was starting to take shape, they asked if I'd be willing to make a few edits to make it fit the chart a little better (and also make it shorter because the original was nearly 6 minutes long lol) so I can TECHNICALLY say that the chart informed the song, but to nowhere near the extent that a good game should...
"production might be a little slow" my dudette, you dropped 12+ hours of music in the past 3 weeks, calm down and congrats on the work for the game. Hope you enjoy a well deserved rest.
0:00 i like when you replace humanoid wording with furry wording. Like “paw” instead of “hand/foot” and “fur” instead of “skin” it’s cute and creative. but I wonder what “owner” refers to. as an outsider it sounds slightly concerning lol
Rhythm doctor is based as hell and so are you, so mixing both is clearly peak rhythm gaming i will give act 5 a try, kinda forgot about this game after i beat it when the last level was the jacked up samurai boss fight, very excited to jump back in, especially after hearing these news!
What an honor to be a part of this game!! Congrats!! Also, dang, spicy take at the end there hah. My gosh, I will definitely say your level was by far the hardest in this act. But I love it for that ^^
Also, if you haven't played bits and bops yet, I super super recommend it, at the same time I almost recommend to just not play it until the full game comes out haha. It's so good that the wait time just feels exponentially increased.
This is so cool! I’ve really fallen behind on rhythm games over covid. I only just finally picked up Rhythm Heaven XD and that’s from, like, 2018 or 2019. I definitely agree with making new music for rhythm games rather than just licensing existing ones!
just got the game, played through all of the day shifts that are currently out, tried your level, and got humbled, lol i'll get it eventually. hopefully.
THANK YOU for putting to words why I love Rhythm Heaven so much - the fact that it's about the music first and makes someone musically inclined like me able to get into it naturally.
So I played act 5. I heard this song, and went “oh this is kind of Patricia taxxon-y” and moved on with my life. Only just now realized it *actually* was you!
as an avid enjoyer of both your music, and also every rhythm game under the sun, this was amazing news 10/10 wonderful level, really enjoyed it, even though it absolutely kicked the crap out of me :D
you did an awesome job on the song!!! rhythm doctor is one of my favorites for sure, been following it on and off ever since it was just a short flash game demo
I just got to the level you worked on, and it's absolutely insane! Took me a few tries, but I finally beat it with a B+, definitely one of my new favorite levels in the game. The whole new chapter is so good!
ah hell naw I guess I gotta actually learn the game now 💀 super happy to see this!!!! big adofai fan. it rules to see creators I enjoy get sick gigs like this :]
One of my favorite things about Rhythm Doctor is that many of the songs don't even require you to see the screen! Managed to get an A+ on Patricia's song with my monitor turned off, lol. Not sure if I'll go for a blind S...
just played the new update holy heck this is so epic ur song was so awesome!!! definitely one of my favorite challenges in the game so far :D …also I FORGOT HOW TO COUNT QUINTUPLETS 😭
LETS GOOOOOOO!!!!! I was hoping the update would come out at midnight last night XD But I'll be playing the update as soon as I get home after work!!!!! Super hyped 🥳
the song is so good but good lord those burn notes are a freaking PAIN to hit, you'd think the patients were being branded with how fast some of them are
no way! i've been playing mods of your songs for a while! i've gotta try all the new stuff i really liked bits and bops so you might too i've yet to try thumper or dance of fire and ice so i guess they're next for me
ADOFAI is my favourite rhythm game ever, and I never felt the need to try any fanmade charts for other songs I like. The sum of a song made with specific mechanics in mind, connecting the visual patterns with rhythmic ones in the tutorial levels, and finally conquering the song itself is a complete experience that cannot be approached by throwing a touhou song into stepmania, no matter how good the chart.
