After seeing this, I'm not as excited about that concept anymore. It doesn't seem like he's really that attached to the album, picking a pretty standard White Light tune over The bloody SOUND is a major shock.
@@tomwilliams8591 A lot of the time the Soundtracks get defeated by worthy songs, but Screenshot over The Final Sacrifice is just no. I can at least understand Why Are We Alive a bit over The Sound even though the Sound is better. Rip Final Sacrifice.
I feel that's one of the few Swans epics that could use some trimming. I really like the initial sound collage from Jarboe, but then it turns into somewhat rote post-rock before the (admittedly amazing) ballad portion kicks in.
Bring the sun is such a masterpiece, I was so surprised when he put I am the sun over it. I thought bring the sun would easily beat out that entire quarter but nope, I was wrong.
The Apostate is probably my favourite. An absolutely monumental and cathartic piece of music. The climax of the song is out of this world. Its one of my favourite pieces of music period.

What I really like about this that the Swans community has such a diverse range of opinion which time or song of swans was the best experience. Really shows that they have tapped in all sorts of corners that speak to so many people if you just search for it.
I actually yelled "WHAT?!?" out loud as you picked other songs over "Love Will Save You" and "Failure" White Light from the Mouth of Infinity is probably my favorite Swans album. We're still friends though.
@@sammo2560 brackify.com/bracket/28875/Godspeed-Bracket I made this bracket around the time of my comment. They're all real tracks, I did have to rely on a few deep cuts though lol.
Lunacy is such an iconic track... I don't immediately remember Oxygen or She loves us, but if they beat lunacy and screen shot they must be fucking heavy! I have to immediately give the album a more proper listen.
my top 4 would be She Loves Us (solidly crushing Lunacy or Screen Shot), Cloud of Unknowing (*barely* edging out Helpless Child), I Was A Prisoner In Your Skull (*barely* edging out Oxygen), and Bring the Sun/Toussaint L'Ouverture (beating out To Be Kind). She Loves Us would win against Bring The Sun/Toussaint L'Ouverture in the finals. Yeah I'm a TBK guy as well.
I'm tied up between Bring The Sun/Toussaint and The Glowing Man. Both are quite literally life-changing experiences in the form of music. I've listened to The Glowing Man more but honestly I would probs pick Bring The Sun cause it's such a goddamn exhilarating adventure of a song. It's euphoric, terrifying, hard-hitting and just an out of this world odyssey.
@@lukamullen2190 That's 100% fair enough. The Seer to me sounds like this universally large and dense machine losing control and when fully listening to it I feel like I'm being sucked in and ripped apart. Pretty incredible feeling. Some days I prefer The Seer and other times I want a more spiritually euphoric experience (Glowing Man)
I’m Partial to “The Glowing Man” because I got to see them play it live (as “Black Hole Man”) as their set closer when I saw them in 2015. It was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever witnessed...
@@iamdamosuzuki_ Damn that's incredible! I wish I had gotten into Swans around 2016 just so I could witness them play it live. From what I've heard they're 10x as intense and visceral when playing live which blows my mind even thinking about it.
It’s Michael “Ji - RAH” and the awesome song off White Light is “Why Are We Alive” - no “Still” in the title. My opinion now - songs that lost too early are The Sound, Helpless Child, Golden Boy, Blind, Love Will Save You, All Lined Up, No Cure For the Lonely, and GOD DAMN THE SUN (a masterpiece). Also, where tf is “Power and Sacrifice”? Anyway, thanks for the video, interesting hearing your takes. Can definitely appreciate why you love the tracks you do, as they’re awesome; interestingly though, the period you describe as week (Children of God/White Light/Love of Life) happens to be maybe my favorite period of their music overall, though I would extend it to include Annihilator and Soundtracks which are both completely epic. The older stuff has its place as does the newer stuff, I’m just a product of the 1990s era I guess as I was in my twenties, single, and severely f*cked up when all those albums came out. Jarboe was a good foil for Gih-RAH, and if the sound was “accessible” it was also very evil and hopeless behind the cheery strings and melodies. Left an indelible stamp on my psyche and with eskimo chain I tattooed my brain all the way. Won’t you miss me....?
"some of us are weak and some endure and some people there lives with a violence that's pure and clean. I saw a man cry once down on his knees, in the corner of a darken set and his pain meant nothing to me. I was younger then and young men never die, when I walked out into the sun, I was strong clear minded and bliiiind".
Props to whoever put in the time to made this bracket. Now allow me to shit on you for not including Weakling, Clay Man, A Piece of the Sky, Miracle of Love, Let it Come Down, Her, Another You, and all their non-LP tracks and live versions.
