The Orioles are going to be good. Opening Day is right around the corner and it's exciting times. That said, Holliday should have made this team. He did everything they asked and more both offensively and defensively. What's frustrating is seeing someone like a Jorge Mateo who is terrible offensively make this team due to his speed only. This is certainly not the end of the world but I don't like the move. Thanks for the video. Appreciate your insight.
I don’t disagree he deserved it . But I’m glad they can retain him another year . Mateo doesn’t really bother me . He fills a role for the team .. he manufactures runs . I mean remember that ground ball down 3rd base against the rays to clinch to division where he scored from first . Can’t teach that . I think he’s accepted his role as a non starting player .. and it’s amazing to have guys with his talent come off the bench for 1-3 innings . Spot starts . Having a talented bench is over looked . And you don’t want a kid splitting time that much . It ruins their timing . Look at what happened to Kyle Stowers last year
Not to mention… the injury bug WILL bite somebody within the first month or two- it always does! Good to have talented plug & play options on the bench and in AAA (Mr Holliday!)
His overall numbers look great, but he had an OPS 200 points lower against left-handers last year and in spring this year was only 2-14. Additionally, he only walked 3 times while also leading the club in strikeouts with 15. He's also only played something like 20 games in his life at 2B. Still plenty of things for the 20-year-old with one season of professional baseball under his belt to work on. This was a perfectly reasonable move, and he was never as sure of a thing to make the Opening Day roster as many made it out to be.
I’m with you . I think a lot of people get lost in the yahoo / espn stats .. the overall .. and not the splits . We all obviously want the most talented roster going north . But we have to make sure everyone’s ready .
@@PigTownSports Yeah, if this was a few years ago or a team not really expected to do much...maybe. But for a team who could be and maybe SHOULD be the best team in the AL? Can't have a 2B still learning the position and who might have to sit against LH starters or be pinch-hit for later in games against LH relievers.
L-Jeffe - his premise is wrong. teams receive additional bonus pool money when they acquire additional picks. no team would ever turn down a first round draft pick. ever. i did listen, critically. you should try it sometime.
Bro, the O's won 100 games without Holliday last year. Pretty sure they will be just fine for a month without him. And besides, Gunnar and Adley didn't even make the team out of spring training as well. What makes Holliday so special?
@@TheMiller037 Im with you. Good take. Who ever helps the Os win games right now, ill cheer on. That eventually will be jackson. but right now.. im okay with him being in AAA . he should be studying biology. lol
Yea, he'll get some more triple A at bats and make the team later this year. Probably a chance for him to get the reps at 2B, and I think he wasn't doing that last year. But remember Arod, Griffey Jr. Harper, Trout at 20. They balled just like Kaline, Mantle , Mays, Frank Robinson, Ted Williams, Bench and more balled at 20 years of age many winning ROY. Don't take this window away from Holiday. They'll make some trades for some top tier pitching.
But will they? Will they? I hope they do but history doesn’t bode well… why not sign Montgomery right now? Why didn’t they get in on the Lorenzen bidding? Why couldn’t they pull the trigger on Cease? Burnes is gonna be a one year rental likely… this teams main problem over the last 30 years has been starting pitching. They’ve had the defense, the offense and the bullpen to be champs but they always cheap out on SP unless it’s homegrown talent… and then they go where the money is because the purse strings around here are tighter than a fishes butthole. Maybe that changes with new ownership? Time will tell! Go O’s
@@GriffGruff7088 Yep, time will tell. they don't have any of the equivalent of a Mussina Erickson, and Key. Or back in the day of the 70's Palmer, Cuellar, McNally. See the Orioles today are almost like the Braves of the early 90's but they had the pitching 3 HOF, but they acquired Maddux. They are not beating the Rangers, who didn't even have DeGrom who was injured, let alone beating the Astros. Again they may win over 100 games, but this is chess, you gotta trade for the high quality starting pitching. Send the kid up there like they did Griffey, Arod, Harper, Trout. It's a hitters ball park. # 1 draft picks play in football and basketball and for the most part hockey.
Do you know how many HS guys the orioles have taken post R4 under Elias who have made any noise? The answer is zero Who cares if we can’t sign an 10th round pick or whatever. There’s 2 guys total on the o’s that were drafted by the o’s later than R5 (means and Mullens) neither of whose were HS players and 0 after round 10
That’s kinda subjective . Elias has only taken like 5 HS players overall . One bring Jackson and other being Gunnar. His job was to get the team competitive asap , and that was with power 5 college players .
All the financial politicking aside, he’s ready now and the normal fan can’t see a guy like McKenna or Nevin making the team over Holliday… I get it, I don’t like it either- but pump the brakes guys; he’s gonna be up with the big club asap as it makes sense with all the stupid money/contract issues. There’s a need for the MLBPA but my oh my how these unions manipulate the dynamics to ordinary, rabid fans! 😂 Go O’s!!!
@@PigTownSports and we the fans get a worse product because of it. Meanwhile across the street with the Ravens we got to watch a 19 year old QB win MVP. Holliday is obviously ready dont care what age he is.
@@PigTownSports Hilariously small sample size of 15. And what stud lefties is he going to face in AAA that will help him work on that? Better to work it out and get ur lumps in against major league talent. Elias is just making excuses for service time manipulation.
It’s a service time/contract/money/unionized move… let Elias play ball with the politics and Holliday will just play ball… next year this won’t matter! 😂
I don't understand the argument you are making about the draft picks. When the Orioles earned the draft pick for Gunnar, not only do we receive pick 32, we receive the slot bonus money as well. The more picks you have, regardless of how you get them, your total allotment continues to climb with each draft pick.
They are usually spending 98-100% of their draft allotment every single year. And they would absolutely want the high picks in the draft, because that gives them the opportunity to select the better players. Every single org would rather have 1st round picks, and use their money on them, then some 5th round talent.
@@PigTownSportsThey lost it on Adley because he was hurt to start 2022. It's why he didn't come up until the middle of May. It had nothing to do with wanting to "lose" a first round draft pick. Any GM wanting to "lose" a draft pick, and make their ML team worse, is a dead man walking. The ROI on these 1st and 2nd round picks are extremely valuable. Every GM wants them. We didn't call Gunnar up until September 2022, and kept his rookie eligibility in tact for 2023, because we wanted the draft pick. The Holliday situation is a combination of things. New position, his struggles vs LHP, and maybe some service time related issues. Though we won't know if it's ST until we see what day he gets promoted. Can guarantee you it's not because we don't want another 1st round pick.
@@robmorris2851that’s what I meant with Adley , learned that lesson . But great points . Good chat . Look forward to talking more baseball with you this year
Why are their endless videos of "fans" making videos that try to defend teams? Like we can't see through this bullshit. RU-vid, stop sending me this fan created bullshit!!!
Cheap organization that is playing service time games. If you want to retain a player for extra year, maybe try signing one of them to a fucking extension.
@@PigTownSports it isnt just boras, name the last player we signed an extension with? Name the last player we signed to a multiple year deal? Poverty organization. No excuses.
@majopa2682 Chris Davis . But haven’t really had a decent player since manny and that was the kick off the rebuild he didn’t want to be apart of . We haven’t really had any decent players since
Don’t even mention the Chris Davis deal 🤦♂️ I heard Baltimore city busses were using his picture on the sides of their busses back in the day so they wouldn’t hit anything
